Evelyn D. Jarvis

Evelyn D. Jarvis, 83, of Hamden, died peacefully on May 25, 2008, at Arden House. She was the wife of the late Glenwood E. Jarvis.

Evelyn was born in New Haven on July 12, 1924, a daughter of the late John and Alice Dunn. Evelyn was the beloved mother of John and his wife, Mary, of Milford; and Glenn (Dick) and his wife, Barbara, Debbie Schreck and her husband, Steve, and Doreen Fitzmaurice and her, husband, John, all of Hamden. Evelyn also leaves six cherished grandchildren Kerri, Matthew, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Kristal and Alie, as well as a brother, John Dunn of St. Helena, Calif., and a sister, Jean Strawson, of West Haven.

Evelyn worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the Bursar's Office at Southern Connecticut State University and was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. The family will receive friends at the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., on Tuesday, May 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friends and family are invited to gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. to join the procession to Blessed Sacrament Church, where the Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Alma V. Corniello Iezzi

Alma V. Corniello Iezzi, 85, of 365 Mather St., Hamden, died May 20, 2008. She was the widow of Michael A. Iezzi.

Alma was born in New Haven on May 27, 1922, the daughter of the late Vincent and Theresa Piccotti Corniello. She was a founding member of the Gems, a member of the Ladies Auxilary of the Hamden Italian-American Club, a longtime communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a devoted mother to her five sons, Rocco (Barbara) Iezzi, Peter Pappas and Michael R. (Amy) Iezzi, all of Hamden, and Vincent A. (Brenda) Iezzi of Northford and Robert (Donna) Iezzi of Louisville, Ky.

Alma was a sister of Phyllis Longobardi of New Haven, Julius Corniello of Northford and the late Luisa Squelia, Julia Cangiano, Jane Monaco and Anthony, Joseph, Frank and John Corniello. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., and at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10 a.m. Burial in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Veronica May Sturtze

Veronica M. Sturtze, 88, of Hamden, passed away April 29, 2008. Mrs. Sturtze was born on March 19, 1920, to the late Frederick and Isabel (Hammond) Bentze in Stratford. Veronica proudly served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp during World War II, where she was a member of the WAAC band and dance band, while stationed at Daytona Beach, Fla.

She was also a champion drummer in the feminine class representing the state of Connecticut at the World’s Fair in 1939. Veronica was predeceased by her husband, Earl Steven Sturtze. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Gloria Scheid of Greensboro, N.C., Mrs. Frank (Virginia) Harvey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mrs. Joseph (Phyllis) Schlosser of Wallingford, as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at a later date and will be private. Hamden Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles W. Odell III

Charles W. Odell III, 34, a lifelong Hamden resident, entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2008. Chuck was born to and is survived by Charles Jr. “Bill” and Annmarie “Babe” (Franco) Odell on April 14, 1974, in New Haven. He was a member of the Dunbar Hill Volunteer Company No. 8, an emergency medical technician and a former Eucharistic minister at Blessed Sacrament.

Chuck thoroughly enjoyed being an uncle to Brendan, and will be missed by all. Also surviving are two sisters Marcella Odell of Meriden and Amy Coppola of Hamden; nephew Brendan Coppola; and a special sister Lisa Bosco of Derby.

Mr. Odell was predeceased by his maternal grandparents; Dominic and Donna Edna Franco, and paternal grandparents Charles and Anne Odell. The family will receive friends on May 1from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave. Friends and family will gather at the funeral home on May 2 at 10:15 a.m. to begin procession to Blessed Sacrament where the Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at All Saints cemetery in North Haven.

Martin T. Wozniak

Martin T. Wozniak, 82, of Hamden, passed away on April 25, 2008. Martin was born on March 9, 1926, in Bobtown, Penn., to the late Martin and Rose (Hybel) Wozniak.

Mr. Wozniak served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later went on to graduate from Penn State with a bachelor’s in business administration. Martin is survived by his son, Martin T Wozniak and wife Maureen, of Hamden; daughter Janet Wozniak and husband John Winkelman, of Lexington, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Natalia, Tatiana and Jack Winkelman. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Vasilich) Wozniak, in 2006, and daughter Marilyn Wozniak.

At the request of the family, there will be no service.

Elsie Barber Trask

Elsie Barber Trask, a Darien resident since 1998, died Wednesday, April 11, at Stamford Hospital. She was 100.

Born in 1907 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Donn and Elsie (Yandell) Barber.

Mrs. Trask graduated from Chapin School in New York City in 1925. She attended Barnard College.

Mrs. Trask worked at St. James's Galleries in New York City, specializing in English antique furniture. An interior decorator for 60 years, she was a principal in the firm of Trask & Clark.

She worked with the State Charities Aid Association and was president of its Suffolk (N.Y.) County Committee on Children and Public Welfare. She was also involved in the Antiquities Committee of the Colonial Dames of America and later became president general.

Mrs. Trask was active with the Chapin School and later became president of the Chapin Alumnae and a trustee. Her memberships included the Cosmopolitan Club of New York City, the Decorator Club, and the Edgartown Yacht Club in Edgartown, Mass. She was also president of the Edgartown Boys Club.

Mrs. Trask is survived by a daughter, Elsie Trask of Rowayton; two sons, John J. Trask of Pennington, N.J., and Richard T.B. Trask of Old Greenwich; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Trask was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, John J. Trask.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. A graveside service took place in Stonington Cemetery, Stonington.

The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien, handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Dennis M. O'Brian

Dennis M. O'Brian, a 32-year Darien resident, died Saturday, April 14, at the Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. He was 76.

Born in 1931 in New York City, he was the son of the late Dennis Martin and Margaret (Desmond) O'Brian.

Mr. O'Brian graduated from Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J., in 1948 and from St. Anselm's College in 1952 with an A.B. degree. He received a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1955.

He continued his education at Fordham University in New York, obtaining a Ph.D. in cell physiology in 1959. He earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut in 1979.

Mr. O'Brian began his career at Seton Hall University, becoming a tenured professor in biological sciences before joining the pharmaceutical industry. He held positions in scientific research and administration at Squibb, Johnson and Johnson, Richardson Vick and Pharma. After his retirement from the pharmaceutical industry, he was an executive recruiter.

For 25 years, he was a member of St. Thomas More Church in Darien, having served on the parish council, and in the Religious Education Program as a catechist. He was also a eucharistic minister at the children's Sunday Mass.

He had a great love of the Irish language, started taking Gaelic lessons at the Fairfield Gaelic-American Club and eventually was a facilitator and teacher of a beginners' class.

Mr. O'Brian is survived by his wife of 48 years, Zita Burns O'Brian of Darien; a son, Gerald Desmond O'Brian of Chester, N.J.; a daughter, Denise O'Brian Lutkins of New Haven; a brother, Robert O'Brian of Fairfield, NJ; two sisters, Rosemary Donahue of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Noreen Drukker of Montclair, N.J., four granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.

The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien, handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital, Maple Street, Norwalk 06856; or to the Rosenthal Hospice Residence, c/o VNA Hospice Care, 1029 East Main St., Stamford 06902.
