Emma F. Frate

Emma F. Frate, a longtime Darien resident, died Thursday, April 12. She was 102.

Born in 1904 in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Frate was a longtime parishioner of St. John Church in Darien.

Mrs. Frate is survived by two daughters, Marie Lucas of New Canaan and Gloria Abate of Kissimmee, Fla.; a sister, Mary Conetta of Stamford; and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Frate.

A prayer service was held Tuesday, April 17, at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien. Burial followed at St. John Cemetery, Darien.

Virginia Rose Vogel

Virginia Rose Vogel of New York City, a former Darien resident, died Tuesday, June 27. She was 69.

Born May 12, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Richard J. and Evelyn Henderson Vogel.

Ms. Vogel graduated from Darien High School in 1955 and from the University of Reading, England, in 1959. After graduation, she studied at Columbia University, the University of California-Berkeley, and earned a degree at Pratt Institute in New York City.

Ms. Vogel had been employed as a proofreader for Young & Rubicam Inc. and later as a legal secretary with Sullivan & Cromwell. She was an artist and later painted abstract art, occasionally holding art shows in SoHo.

She is survived by two brothers, Richard H. Vogel of North Kingstown, R.I., and Bruce Vogel of San Mateo, Calif.; a sister, Marilyn Vogel Sutherland of Green Lane, Pa.; a niece and a nephew.

A memorial service was held on Aug. 11 in Manhattan. For information, contact Marilyn Vogel Sutherland at (215) 803-2813.

Sylvia Daisy Truss

Sylvia Daisy Truss, a 44-year Greenwich resident, died Friday, Aug. 4. She was 81.

Born Jan. 4, 1925, in Upminster, England, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Daisy Nancarrow.

Mrs. Truss met her husband of 59 years, Howard, while serving with the Women's Royal Naval Service in Scotland during World War II.

She was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, a charter member of the Princess Marina Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire, and a leader of reunions for former WRNS members now living in the area.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Helen Kweskin of Rowayton, Frances Bresnan of Westport and Dianna Santora of Norwalk; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sarah.

Interment will be private. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the charity supported by the Daughters of the British Empire: The Victoria Home for the Elderly, North Malcolm Street, Ossining, NY 10562.

Nancy P. Gilbert

Nancy Porter Gilbert, a former Darien resident, died Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Medway Country Manor in Medway, Mass., after a long illness. She was 89.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y, she was the daughter of the late Preston B. Porter and Margaret Ransom Cary.

Mrs. Gilbert lived in Darien, Osterville, Mass., and West Yarmouth, Mass. She was a lifelong volunteer, performing charity work for a number of causes. She volunteered transcribing books into Braille for the blind, and also for the Visiting Nurse Association and St. Peter's Church in Osterville, where she served as treasurer and in other roles for many years.

Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and needlepoint, as well as drawing and painting. She was a member of the Wianno Beach Club of Centerville, Mass.

Mrs. Gilbert is survived by a a son, Samuel L. Gilbert of New York City; a daughter, Nancy Gilbert Holland of Sherborn, Mass.; a brother, Joseph Cary of Manchester; a sister, Geneva Test of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick A. Gilbert; a son, Charles Ransom Gilbert; and two sisters, Virginia (Dino) and Barbara Stayman.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, Osterville.

The Doane, Beale and Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, Mass., handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church, 421 Wianno Ave., Osterville, MA 02655; or to Heiffer International, 216 Wachusett St., Rutland, MA 01543.

Alan Garfield Armus

Alan Garfield Armus, a longtime Darien resident, died Monday, June 12, at Stamford Hospital. He was 59. Born May 23, 1947, in Stamford, he was the son of Harry Armus of Bradenton, Fla., and the late Ellen Pritchard Armus. Mr. Armus attended Darien schools and was a member of First Congregational Church of Darien.

He received an honorable discharge after serving the U.S. Air Force in Thailand during the Vietnam War. In addition to his father, Mr. Armus is survived by a sister, Sally A. Shutts of Punta Gorda, Fla., and a nephew. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to First Congregational Church of Darien, 14 Brookside Road, Darien 06820.

F. William "Bill" Davis

F. William "Bill" Davis of Narragansett, R.I., a former assistant superintendent for Darien Public Schools, died Friday, June 2, of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. He was 58. Born Aug. 9, 1947, in Milford, he was the son of Marguerite Davis and the late Frederick Earle Davis Jr. Mr. Davis was a 1965 graduate of Andrew Warde High School in Fairfield. He received a bachelor of science degree, magna cum laude, from Springfield College in 1969 and was a Rhodes Scholar nominee.

He received a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Oregon. Mr. Davis began his career as a physical education teacher and head football coach at Andrew Warde from 1970 to 1980. His career in public school administration included positions of executive director of the Southern Rhode Island Collaborative; assistant superintendent of schools in Darien, Madison and Wilton, and superintendent of schools in Narragansett and Connecticut Region 8.

He was affiliated with numerous professional associations and served as president of the Rhode Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Mr. Davis was an active member of his church, St. Peter's by the Sea in Narragansett, and was involved with a variety of community organizations, including the YMCA and youth athletics. He enjoyed boating and scuba diving and in his retirement he became a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Carr Davis; a son, Scott J. Davis of Salem, Mass.; two daughters, Bonnie Ellis of Carolina, R.I., and Abby J. Davis of Redding, Calif.; three brothers, Robert Davis of Windham, N.H., Jon Davis of Easton and Thomas Davis of Fairfield; a grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at St Peter's by the Sea, 72 Central St., Narragansett; and Sunday, June 18, at 4 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Road, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bill Davis Scholarship Fund, c/o High School Scholarship Found-ation of Fairfield, P.O. Box 682, Fairfield 06824; or to the CJD Foundation, P.O. Box 5312, Akron, OH 44334.

Barbara Burke Genster

Barbara Burke Genster, a former Darien resident, died Thursday, June 1, at her home in Princeton, N.J. She was 85. Born June 28, 1920, in La Salle, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Edmund J. and Anna Christianson Burke. Mrs. Genster graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where she majored in German and French and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Phi Alpha, and Mortar Board. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

During and after World War II, Mrs. Genster was employed by Marshall Field & Co. and Harvard University. Her other interests included languages, literature, and international travel, especially in Europe. She was an avid reader and tennis fan. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles Joseph Genste; a son, Joseph Burke Genster of Seattle; four daughters, Margaret Mary Genster of Seattle, Jane Emily Genster of Washing-ton, D.C.; Julia Ann Genster of Concord, Mass.; and Sara Genster Robling of Larchmont, N.Y.; a sister Mary Emily Baggott of Peoria, Ill.; and 10 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, David Brian Genster. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 7, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Princeton. A reception followed at The Windrows, Princeton. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Families of SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, ) P.O. Box 196, Libertyville, IL 60048-0196; or www.curesma.org .
