Antoinette (Cellamare) Kraemer
Antoinette (Cellamare) Kraemer died Tuesday. She was the widow of Adolph Francis Kraemer. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Kraemer Trezza; her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Diane Kraemer; and her two grandsons, Frank Trezza III and Mark Kraemer. Visiting hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the David J. Hodder & Son Funeral Home, 899 McLean Ave., Yonkers, N.Y. A funeral Mass will take place tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church. Interment will be in St. Raymond Cemetery.
Albert Majoris
Albert Majoris, 84, of Bridgeport, a retired employee of the Fairfield Board of Education, died Tuesday at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Andro and Mari Majoris, he had been a lifelong Bridgeport and Fairfield resident. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Earlier in his life he had worked for Avco Lycoming. He was a former member of the Bridgeport Elks Club. He was an avid and knowledgeable sports fan and was known affectionately as a "walking encyclopedia of sports."
Survivors include his wife of nearly 52 years, Doris Campbell Majoris of Bridgeport; two daughters, Nancy Murphy and her husband, William, of Clermont, Fla., and Janet Auger and her husband, Richard, of Milford; a sister, Matilda Swarney of Orange; five grandchildren, William and Michael Murphy, Marisa Taglavia, and Daniel and Jennifer Auger; four great-grandchildren, Kailee, Anakin, Antonia and Gavin; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place today at 11 a.m. at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road. Burial with military honors will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford 06405.
Marion (Farkas) Rinck
Marion (Farkas) Rinck, 94, a longtime Fairfield resident, died Sunday. She was predeceased by her first husband, Sigmond Farkas and her second husband, Paul "Bert" Rinck. Survivors include two sons, Robert Farkas and his wife, Patricia, of Stratford and Roger Farkas and his wife, Christine, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Ruthie Sosta of Vero Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Michael J. Farkas of Trumbull, Kathie Reed and her husband, Richard, of West Haven, Kimberly Park of Stratford, Bob Farkas and Stephen Farkas of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

William S. Simpson
William S. Simpson, 89, of Bradenton, Fla., died Saturday at his home. He was born July 20, 1916, in Bridgeport and came to Bradenton in 1988 from Fairfield. He was chief executive officer from 1967 to 1980 of Raybestos-Manhattan Inc. and chairman of the company from 1980 to 1983. He received a bachelor's degree from Williams College in 1939 and an honorary public service degree from Fairfield University. He was a member of Bradenton Country Club and served on the advisory committee of the Library Founda-tion in Bradenton, where he was co-sponsor of the annual Books Author Luncheon.
He was a life member of the Automotive Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Terry; daughters Patricia Martell and Susan Kardos, both of Bradenton; a son, John of Bradenton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be private for the family. Burial will be in Fogartyville Cemetery, Bradenton. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes, 43rd St. Chapel, Bradenton, is in charge of the arrangements. Helen Dillon Clarke
Helen Dillon Clarke, the wife of the late Robert Clarke, died Tuesday at home in Milford. A Fairfield resident for 42 years, she was born in Jersey City in 1920 to Michael and Helen Misbach Dillon and was raised in Teaneck, N.J., with summer residence in Milford. She graduated from Teaneck High School in 1939 and worked as a nurse's aide for the American Red Cross during World War II. She pursued a career as an executive assistant at United Artists in New York City before marrying Robert P. Clarke Jr. in 1948. Together, they raised seven children. In 1956, she and her family moved to Fairfield as her husband began a career with Remington Shavers, a division of Sperry Rand Corporation in Bridgeport.
In 1969, he was named president of the company. During her years in Fairfield, she was an outgoing contributor and volunteer to the community. In the early 1970s she spearheaded Backyard Camps, a joint program between ABCD and the Fairfield Committee on Human Relations, which established the Clarke home as a summer camp for Bridgeport inner-city children, featuring outdoor crafts and swimming instruction. She also remained active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. In the 1980s and early 1990s, she returned to the work place, first with Stauffer Chemical in Westport and then as executive assistant to the director of the Westport YMCA.
An avid skier and sailor, she was a member of the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport. Finally, she assisted her husband and sons at Market Channels Inc., a successful family-owned packaging and warehousing company in Milford. She is survived by children, Deborah of Bridgeport, John of Cheshire, Catherine of Westport, Peter of Dallas, Robert of Newton, Timothy of Southport and Christopher of Larchmont, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.Friends are invited to attend a Mass at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive. Jennifer Dovo-Stoute
Jennifer Dovo-Stoute, 24, of New York City died Dec. 16 at her apartment. A longtime resident of Weston, she was born Jan. 15, 1981, in Miami. She moved with her family to Weston in 1991. She attended the Weston Middle School and was a member of the Weston High School class of 1999. Music was an important part of her life, and she was a longtime flute student of Candace Channing of Fairfield and began teaching young flute students in Weston during her high school years.
She attended the University of Connecticut for two years before taking a maternity leave. While working for the accounting firm of Bernstein and Bernstein in New Rochelle, N.Y., she returned to her studies and attended Fordham University full time at night. She is survived by her daughter, Mariana, 3; her parents, Bert Dovo of Westport and Jean Dovo of Wilton; and her sister, Lauren. Funeral and memorial services took place Wednesday at the Unitarian Church, Westport. A reception followed.
Elinor Lincoln Eckstein
Elinor Lincoln Eckstein, 90, of Wilton, formerly of Fairfield, died Sunday at the Green's at Cannondale, Wilton. She was born in Bridgeport and was a lifelong area resident. She was the widow of George Eckstein. Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Gorfinkle and her husband, Michael, of West Redding; and a brother, Harold Lincoln and his wife, Sally, of Florida. Eileen V. (Wines) Hasak
Eileen V. (Wines) Hasak, 88, of Fairfield, the wife of the late Stephen W. Hasak, died Dec. 23. She was born in Bridgeport on Oct. 12, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Catherine and James Wines. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Catherine and Robert Boroskey of Trumbull, Eileen and Robert Falchek of Bridgeport, Mary and David Terry of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Martin and Judi Hasak of Stamford; and five grandchildren, Doreen, Donna, Stephen, Zachary and Rebecca. John Kanca Jr.
John Kanca Jr., 81 of Fairfield, a retired industrial engineer for the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company of Georgetown, died Saturday at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport. Born in Czechoslovakia, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 5 and had been a Fairfield resident since 1958. He served in the U.S. Army Artillery during World War II in Europe, achieving the rank of captain, and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 143 for many years. Following the war, he attended the University of Bridgeport, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.
Earlier in his career he worked for the Olin-Matheson, Winchester Division and the Waterbury Press Metals Company. A civic-minded citizen, he served as the president of the Fairfield Taxpayers Association. He was a member for many years of St. John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, where he loved singing in the church choir. He was a member of the Germania-Schwaben Club and the Harugari Social Club. He was an extremely talented and bright man; was fluent in seven languages; could play the piano, violin, clarinet and accordion; and held a private pilot's license. He authored, and saw published, a science fiction book entitled In Our Own Back Yard.
He will be remembered as a loving and dedicated family man who enjoyed his life to the fullest. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Julianne (Terdy) Kanca of Fairfield; four children, Roswitha Cusick and her husband, Joseph, of Middlebury, Dr. John Kanca III and his wife, Janet, of Middlebury, Diane Kanca-Dwyer and her husband, Robert, of Rye, N.Y., and Cherylanne Sarno and her husband, John, of Glen Rock, N.J.; four sisters, Mary, Anne, Betty and Joan; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Kanca and Stephen Kanca.
A funeral liturgy took place Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, 364 Mill Hill Ave., Bridgeport. Interment with military honors followed in Lawncroft Cemetery. Elizabeth Ewing Lambert
Elizabeth Ewing Lambert, 90, died Dec. 20 at the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital. She was born in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 28, 1915, and was the daughter of Robert and Georgia Ewing. A 1936 graduate of Oberlin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, she earned a master's degree in library science from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972 and worked as a librarian at Western Connecticut State University.
She graduated from Mount Vernon, N.Y., High School in 1932. She married
her husband, Pierre, a consulting chemical engineer, in New York City on Sept. 2, 1938, and lived later in Chappaqua, N.Y., where she was active in the First Congregational Church. They and their three sons - Robert, James and Charles - lived in Paris for two years where her husband was on a special assignment for his engineering firm. She spent many summers at the family vacation home in Phippsburg, Maine.
She is survived by her sons, Robert P. Lambert and his wife, Patricia, of Richmond, Va., and Charles A. Lambert and his wife, Catherine, of Fairfield; her daughter in-law, Judith Lambert of Falmouth, Maine; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and by her son, James. A memorial service took place yesterday at First Church Congregational. Internment will be at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. Joseph "Mack" Makucevich
Joseph "Mack" Makucevich, 91, the husband of the late Margaret Caluta Makucevich, died Saturday at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Bridgeport to the late Thomas and Mary Makucevich, he was a lifelong resident of Fairfield. He was former chief and a 50-year member of the Tunxis Hill Volunteer Fire Department. He retired as foreman in the tree department for the Town of Fairfield, where he was employed for more than 40 years.
He is survived by a son, David Makucevich of Fairfield; two daughters, Diana Baratta and her husband, Dan, of Somers and Debra Kerestury and her husband, Andrew, of Fairfield; two brothers, Edward Makucevich and Stanley Makucevich and his wife, Cele, all of Fairfield; a sister, Estelle Makucevich of Fairfield; four grandchildren, A.J. and Jason Kerestury, Jen Shelton and Dana Baratta; one great-grandchild, Tyler Shelton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by a brother, John Makucevich and two sisters, Helen Biondi and Frances Makucevich. Funeral services took place yesterday at the Fairfield Funeral Home of Edmund W. Dougiello, 36 South Pine Creek Road, and were followed by interment in Lawncroft Cemetery. William P. Martinsky Jr.
William P. Martinsky Jr., 69, of Bridgeport died Dec. 23 at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was born in Bridgeport, was raised in Fairfield and had been a Bridgeport resident since 1966. He was a member of the graduating class of 1954 of Roger Ludlowe High School. He was a retired electrician for Local Union 488 of the IBEW. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving aboard the submarine USS Rock, He was a member of the 1964 ASA Slow Pitch Softball State Champions playing for the Surfside of Fairfield. He was a parishioner of St. Augustine's Cathedral Parish.
He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey Clark Martinsky; a daughter, Patricia Martinsky; and his father, William P. Martinsky Sr. Survivors include his mother, Margaret Martinsky; two brothers, Daniel Martinsky and Ray Martin; his children, John Martinsky and his wife, Diane, Laurel Martinsky, William Martinsky, Thomas Martinsky and his wife, Amy, Alison Cain and her husband, Tim, and Eileen Vacca and her husband, Michael; and his grandchildren, Billy and David Martinsky, Michael Martinsky, Johnny and Katherine and Christopher Cain and Olivia and Audrey Vacca; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.
The funeral took place Wednesday at the Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Ave., Bridgeport, and at St. Augustine's Cathedral for a Mass of Christian burial. John Robert Murren, M.D.
John Robert Murren, M.D., 47, the husband of Nancy Murren and father of John Murren, died Wednesday after a battle with melanoma at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. His life was dedicated to discovery, healing and the advancement of humanity. He was the essence of a gentle man. He was a third-generation resident of Fairfield. He was a graduate from Roger Ludlowe High School with honors. He was renowned as a medical oncologist and cancer researcher specializing in the treatment and prevention of lung cancer. Since 1992, he had been awarded grant funding to study cancer drug therapies yielding invaluable contributions to the understanding of the effectiveness of cancer drug therapies, particularly chemotherapy.
He was the chief of the Yale Medical Oncology Outpatient Clinic and director of the Lung Cancer Unit at the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Duke University cum laude followed by his M.D. in 1984 from the Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York, where he was chief resident. In 1988, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in medical oncology at the Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was an attending physician as well as an associate professor of medicine. At Yale, he had the largest clinical practice at the Cancer Center and treated thousands of patients and their families over a distinguished career.
As a researcher, he was exceptionally gifted and his clinical research widely published. He sat on several peer review boards and was sought out worldwide for his expertise. For the Nevada Cancer Institute, he was one of its early visionaries and founders. The articulation of his vision to bring research-based medicine to Nevada resulted in the founding of the institute in 2002 and the creation of a 142, 000-square-foot facility in Las Vegas that is dedicated to researching, preventing, detecting, caring and curing cancer. He served on the institute's board of directors as well as an adjunct faculty member. He was also a member of the board of trustees of the Frisbee Foundation. In addition to the clinical, educational and research endeavors, he served on the Clinical Research Subcommittee of the American Association of Cancer Research and the American College of Surgeons Cancer Committee.
He also served as co-chairman of Novel Therapeutics for the American Association of Cancer Research National Meeting in 2001. He was a member of the Research Grants Council in Hong Kong and was an active lecturer and writer. He was predeceased by his father, Attorney John Henry Murren, who died Feb. 3, 1990, from melanoma at age 59. His grandfather, John P. Murren, D.D.S. was also a prominent dentist practicing in Fairfield.
He is also survived by his mother, Jean Perkins Murren; brothers, Jim and Michael; sister, Kathie; sisters-in-law, Heather Hay Murren and Mary Kay; brothers-in-law, George Koether and Jeff and Bill Hughes and their wives; family; mother-in-law, Doris Hughes; and several nieces and nephews he truly loved and was loved in return. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be private. Friends may greet the family Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey-Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road.
