Ina Ruth Clarke, 97, passed away on October 7, 2010. She was born in Jamaica in the parish of St. Mary, daughter of Samuel and Amanda Bell. She is survived by a brother, Harry Bell, in Florida and many nieces and nephews.
She left Jamaica in 1946 to join her uncle in New York and in 1953, became a citizen. She worked in a clothing manufacturing firm where she advanced to the position of designer. When the company decided to relocate to Norwalk, they invited her to accompany them.
In Norwalk, she was an active member of the community and of the First Congregational Church of Norwalk, serving as a member of their outreach program and later as a deacon in the church. In addition, she served the community as administrator of the Norwalk Community Garden. In her later years, she lived at the Laura Raymond Homes, a senior citizens’ home where she took care of the flower garden.
In March 2003, Ina reached her ninetieth birthday and a wide cross-section of friends and family gathered to celebrate her life. After she suffered a stroke she had to relocate to the Honey Hill Nursing Home. No longer active, her friends kept in touch with her, visiting with her in the nursing home. Her family maintained contact via the telephone and, from time to time, short visits.
Magner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Viewing will be at 10 am on Saturday, October 16, at the First Congregational Church, Park and Lewis Streets. Following will be the funeral service at 11 am at the church. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Stefan Mirowski - age: 77

Stefan Mirowski, age 77 formerly of Weston, died on Monday, October 18, 2010. Born in Poland on December 3, 1932, he was the son of the late Jan and Zophia Mirowski. After many travels throughout Europe, Asia and Africa he and his family arrived in the United States in 1958. Mr. Mirowski was a welder and inventor for over 40 years prior to retiring. Stefan was a dedicated husband and father who was admired and respected by his family and dear friends. He had a passion and love for creating metal artwork, but his true love was the time spent with his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Halina Link Mirowski. Survivors include, two loving children, Yvonne Mirowski and her husband Steven Cappella of Urbana, MD and, Elizabeth Mirowski and her husband Brian Coffey of Boulder, CO. Two cherished grandchildren, Alexandra and Gabrielle Cappella; two sisters Helena Tomasiewicz and Janina Potrykus of Norwalk, CT as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. Interment will follow at St. John's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Norwalk. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. also at the Magner Funeral Home.

Alfred A. Mennino, Jr., age 92, of Norwalk, died peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Norwalk Hospital. He was the husband of Ann C. Famiglietti Mennino. Born in Norwalk on March 10, 1918, Alfred was the son of the late Alfred and Rosina Zaino Mennino and was a lifelong Norwalk resident. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a Master Sergeant in the Army Air Corps, 91st Squadron, Asiatic Pacific Theater. After the war he was an officer of the Hatters Union of America, purchasing agent for Polycast Technologies Corp of Stamford, and a part time sales associate at Balducci’s of Westport. He retired in 2008. He was a member of the American Legion and loved to play golf and spend time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Alfred is survived by his two sons, James Mennino of New Orleans, LA and Thomas Mennino of Norwalk, his grandson, Jason Mennino and great grandson Stefan Mennino of White’s Creek, TN, his sister, Carmela Pagliano of Norwalk and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother James F. Mennino and his sisters Irene and Amelia Mennino of Norwalk.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 18, 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk, with entombment to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk. The Mennino family will receive friends at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk on Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:30 AM, prior to leaving for church. Memorial donations in Alfred’s name may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Salvatore Joseph Arena, Sr., 87, of Norwalk, Connecticut passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, August 8, 2010 after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s disease.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Agnes (Senese) Arena, his son, Salvatore Arena, Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Joanne Orme his grandchildren, Daniel and Jonathan Arena, his brother John Arena and wife Bernadette, sisters Virginia Arena and Helen Damato, and many extended family and friends. He is also predeceased by his sisters Angelina Schiavone and Antoinette Arancia.
Born in Norwalk, the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Chappa) Arena, Sal spent a portion of his childhood in Brooklyn, NY but returned to become a lifelong resident of Norwalk.
In 1943, Sal joined the U.S. Army and fought in Europe during World War II, where he was a mechanic and a Technical Sergeant. Sal was a Mechanical Engineer for Ivan Sorvall/Dupont, a medical supply company located in Norwalk and Newtown, CT for 22 years. He also worked for Pequot Engineering in Norwalk and as a painter at Gardella’s boat yard.
Over the years, Sal and Agnes participated in many events with the Catholic War Veterans, Sons of Italy and Knight of Columbus organizations. Sal was an accomplished bowler, an excellent chess player and an avid Yankee fan. Most of all, he had a wonderful sense of humor which brightened so many lives and he endeared every child that he met through his magic tricks, jokes and riddles.
Family and friends can pay their respects at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, on Thursday between 4 and 8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mathews Church in Norwalk on Friday at 10AM. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. John cemetery in Norwalk.

George E. Jones, Jr., died quietly at home in Savannah, Georgia, on August 12, 2010. His beloved wife of 64 years, Marie, was at his side. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, he attended Norwalk schools and graduated from Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts. He was a soldier in the U.S. Army during World War II and he was awarded five Battle Stars and spent more than two years overseas serving those on the front lines as a member of the 3612 Quartermaster Truck Company. Upon his return, he took over the family business, Star Laundry. He was a life long and avid tennis player and baseball enthusiast. He is survived by his wife, Marie Sherwood Jones; a daughter, Kathleen Jones Thopsey of Trumbull; a son, George E. Jones III (Casey) and wife Debra, of Fairfield; grandchildren: Elizabeth S. Jones, Emily G. Jones, Abigail P. Jones, Ryan C. Thopsey, Brooks H. Thopsey, Melissa A. Thopsey and Graham O. Thopsey.

Norma Arnold Hishon, a long time resident of the Rowayton section of Norwalk, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010. Born in the family home in Rowayton on August 21, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Herbert M. and Sarah P. Arnold and granddaughter of the late John Dietrich Plander who built the house on Crockett Street in 1869. Mrs. Hishon was predeceased by her husband Neil in 1943 and it was on Crockett Street that she raised her two daughters. The house served as home to five generations of family members.
Prior to her retirement in 1979, Mrs. Hishon was a long-time employee of J.M. Layton Insurance Company beginning there when it was a small office on Washington Street in South Norwalk. She was a member of the Rowayton Historical Society and a founding member of The United Church of Rowayton where for many years she taught Sunday school.
Mrs. Hishon's family was first and foremost in her heart. It has been their honor and privilege to have lived with and been loved by her. She is survived by: her two daughters, Sheila Hishon Potter and her husband Donald and Donna Hishon Gauthier and her husband Frank; four beloved grandchildren, Robin Potter Bradshaw ( Michael ), Carolyn Potter Poole ( Chris ), Marissa Elizabeth Jaye ( Brooke Gaede) and Douglas Ronald Jaye ( Karen); six great grandchildren, Connor and Gregory Bradshaw, Brittney and Mykayla Jaye, and Zachary and Jacob Poole. She also leaves behind two step granddaughters, Elizabeth Gauthier and Aimee Gauthier Carpenter.

Jacquelyn Diane Christiano, age 78, beloved wife of Charles W. Christiano of Norwalk, died on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Norwalk, she had worked as a waitress at the New Canaan Country Club, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.
In addition to Charles, her loving husband of 55 years, she is survived by a son James J. Christiano and a daughter Cindy A. Christiano, both of Norwalk, her sister Dorothy Paqua of E. Norwalk, and her brother Frank Paqua and his wife Elvera of Norwalk, and other family members, as well as her special poodle buddy, “Sunny”.
