Mary Vera Berei Servas, 84, of Danbury, CT, died on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the Bethel Health Care Center, Bethel, CT, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Servas was the widow of retired Sgt. Frank J. Servas, Bergen County Police Department, Hackensack, New Jersey,

Mrs. Servas was born in Passaic, New Jersey, June 24, 1915, daughter of the late Martin and Katherine (Wizenfelder) Berei. Mrs. Servas was a former resident of Rochelle Park, Garfield, and Oakland, New Jersey, before moving to Danbury, ten years ago.

Mrs. Servas is survived by two sons; Frank M. Servas and his wife Grace of Sante Fe, New Mexico, Thomas W. Servas and his wife, Judy of West Milford Township, New Jersey; two daughters: Kathleen M. Rimlinger and her husband Peter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Therese A. Servas Nolan and her husband Kim of West Redding, CT; four brothers, Martin of Bay Village, Ohio, John of New Port Richey, Florida, Edward of Deerfield Beach, Florida, and Albert of West Milford Township, New Jersey; and one sister, Ann Horvath of Lodi, New Jersey. Mrs. Servas was pre-deceased by two sisters, Helen Toth and Kate Klammer; and two brothers, Steven and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter church, Danbury, on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lodi, New Jersey. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, CT on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Ann's Place of I Can (Cancer Support Services) 1 Padanaram Road, Danbury, CT 06811.

Frances N. Johnson

Frances N. Johnson, 83, of 3 Bucks Rock Road, New Milford, died Saturday evening at New Milford Hospital. She is the widow of Eric H. Johnson Sr.

Mrs. Johnson was born in New Milford, January 19, 1916, a daughter of the late Bernie and Amy Bishop Rowe Cole, and was a life-long resident of New Milford. Mrs. Johnson worked for the Berkshire Transformer Company for several years. She also was employed by the Nestles Company for 12 years before retiring at the age of 65.

Mrs. Johnson is a 15 year member of Palm Rebekah Lodge #43 in New Milford and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, New Milford. Mrs. Johnson was a collector of dolls.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Eric H. Johnson Jr. and Neils W. Johnson both of New Milford, two daughters, Lynn Lillis and Vivian Baldwig both of New Milford, nine grandchildren and nine great children, two sisters Jean Erwin and Wanda Miller both of New Milford and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson is predeceased by a son Algoth Johnson and a brother Hollis Cole.

The family will receive friends in the Colonial Funeral Home, 87 Park Lane Road, New Milford from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday with a Rebekah service to be celebrated at 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Colonial Funeral Home. The burial will follow in Center Cemetery, New Milford.

John P. McManus

John P. McManus, 91, of Brooklyn, NY, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the Maridian extended care facility Red Bank.

Mr. McManus was born on December 9, 1907 in Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. McManus was the husband of the late Margaret (Mary) McManus.

Mr. McManus moved to Brooklyn in 1926 and worked as a Lynatype Machinist for Appeal Printing Company in New York City, NY until his retirement. He was also a professional soccer player for the Kearny Soccer Club from 1926 to 1940. Mr. McManus was a communicant for St. Catherine's R C Church in Middletown, NJ.

Mr. McManus is survived by four daughters, Patricia Colgan of Newtown, CT, Kathleen Sutherland of Jacksonville, FL., Margaret Higgins of Floral Park, NY., and Eileen Kenavan of Middletown, NJ., and 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be celebrated on July 26, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Catherine R C Church in Middletown, NJ. The burial will follow at the Fair View Cemetery in Middletown, NJ.

Jeffrey Scott Cavaliere

Jeffrey Scott Cavaliere, age 36 of Ravenel, South Carolina, formerly of Newtown, died Saturday July 24, 1999 in Charleston, South Carolina from injuries received in an automobile accident.

He was born in Bridgeport, May 26, 1963, a son of Gerald Cavaliere of Newtown and the late Linda (Wasik) Cavaliere Roe. Mr. Cavaliere was a resident of South Carolina the past two years and was employed as a Home Builder.

In addition to his father, he is survived by a son, Joseph Cavaliere of Newtown, one brother Gerald Cavaliere, Jr. and his wife Linda of Newtown, one sister Joycelyn Kowats and her husband Donald of Newtown, one nephew Nicholas Cavaliere, four nieces, Danielle and Gina Cavaliere and Sarah and Kristina Kowats and a close friend Linda Burbage.

Funeral services will be celebrated Thursday July 29, 1999 at 9:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown and at 10 a.m. in St. Rose Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Joseph A. Yarochowicz

Joseph A. Yarochowicz, 82, of Danbury died Monday at Danbury Hospital. Mr. Yarochowicz was born in New Milford on February 21, 1917. A son of the late Albert and Mary Karentowicz Yarochowicz. He was a graduate of New Milford High School class of 1937 of which he was the class valedictorian.

He had been employed by the Former Robertson Bleachery and Dye Works in New Milford for more than 20 years and later was employed also the former Winchester Electronics in New Milford for more than 18 years retiring as a supervisor. He had moved to Danbury from New Milford in 1978.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews and had been predeceased by three brothers. John Yarochowicz, Frank Yarochowicz and Stanley Yarochowicz.

Funeral services on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church New Milford with a mass of Christian burial. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements by Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford.

Professor Kelvin John Lancaster

Professor Kelvin John Lancaster resident of Sherman, Connecticut and New York City, died at his New York home Friday July 23, 1999. He was 74.

Professor Lancaster was born in Sydney, Australia, December 10, 1924 and was a distinguished bombardier and flight instructor for the RAAF during WWII. Although he began his academic career in Geology and then in English Literature at Sydney University, he eventually became interested in Economics. Despite a lack of formal education in this subject, he took and passed the rigorous entrance exam to the prestigious London School of Economics where he quickly distinguished himself in the field and received his doctorate. He co-authored a landmark paper on "The Theory of the Second Best" which brought him international acclaim.

He came to the United States in 1961 and taught first at John Hopkins University and subsequently at Columbia University in New York City. He was a popular and dedicated teacher to both undergraduate and graduate students and was appointed John Bates Clark Professor of Economics. He authored a great number of important papers and books that were translated into numerous languages and received many awards and distinctions. He was elected to the Econometric Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was a Fellow of the American Economic Society.

According the economist Jagdish Bhagwati, "He was widely regarded as a potential recipient of the Nobel Prize, for the notable impact that had been made by his contributions to the theory of second best and the integration of variety into economic theory. He joins the list of extraordinary economists such as Joan Robinson, Roy Harrod and Mancur Olson whom death deprived of this singular honor."

In addition to his tenure as chief of the Department of Economics at Columbia he also served as a trustee of a Bankers Trust fund. He served two years as President of Deer Run Shores Association in Sherman.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Deborah, father to Clifton of Avon, Connecticut and Gilead of Redding, Connecticut and grandfather to Ian, Peter, Meredith and Chloe.

A memorial service will be celebrated at Columbia University this fall. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Jacob Perlow Hospice, First Avenue at 16th Street, New York, New York 10003.

Nelson Pinto Costa

Nelson Pinto Costa, 20, of Cross Street in Danbury died on July 26, 1999 at Danbury Hospital due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Mr. Costa was born in Danbury, Conn. on October 31, 1978, son of Jose and Maria (Pinto) Costa of Danbury. A graduate of Danbury schools, Mr. Costa was in his second year at Gibbs College in Norwalk, Conn., majoring in computer programming.

Besides his parents, Mr. Costa is survived by a sister, Elisabete Costa; his maternal grandparents, Joaquim and Felicidade Pinto; his paternal grandfather, Manuel Costa; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Lucinda Costa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, 10 a.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions in Mr. Costa's memory may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 149 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.

Doris I. Gapit

Doris I. Gapit, 80, formerly of Danbury, died on July 27, 1999 at the Watertown Convelarium in Watertown, Conn.

She was born on March 3, 1919 in Barre, Vt., daughter of the late Joseph and Albina Host Gapit. She received her early education in Barre. Ms. Gapit was an LPN, working at Fairfield Hills State Hospital in Newtown for over 20 years. Prior to her stay in Watertown, she was a resident of the Glen Apartments in Rogers Park in Danbury.

She is survived by two sons, Martin Zahara of New Fairfield, Conn. and Michell Labouda of Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Jeff Zahara of New Fairfield and Amy Zahara of Guilford, Conn.; and her sister, Josephine Mori of Barre, Vt.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, 1 p.m., at Hope Cemetery in Barre, Vt. with Rev. Hermine Benjamin officiating. There are no calling hours.

The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions in her memory may be made to one's favorite charity.

Richard S. Brown Sr.

Richard S. Brown Sr., 69, of 14 Lee Ave. in Danbury, husband of the late Eleanor (Barry) Brown, died on Monday, July 26, 1999 at his home.

He was born in Ridgefield, Conn. on June 2, 1930, son of the late William and Edith (Wood) Brown. He was raised in Ridgefield and attended Ridgefield schools. He lived most of his life in Danbury.

Mr. Brown was a machinist for the Barden Corporation for more than 40 years. He was a member of St. Peter Church and was actively involved in several area senior centers.

He is survived by his daughters, Gail A. Covillion and Eileen L. Brown, both of New Milford, Conn.; his sons, Richard S. Brown Jr. of Riverside, Calif. and Shawn L. Brown of Bethel, Conn.; his brothers, Kenneth Brown of New Milford, Conn. and Sidney Brown of Florida; his sisters, Ruth Sterling of Wilton, Conn., Marion Redman of Fairfield, Conn. and Doris Chappius of New Milford, Conn.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Church in Danbury. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

John Maher

John Harlan Maher, age 71, of New Fairfield, Conn. died on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Danbury Hospital.

He was born in Rockford, Ill. on February 14, 1928, the son of the late Francis and June (Lane) Maher. He grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During his business career, Mr. Maher lived in Chicago, Ill.; Orlando and Key Biscayne, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga.; Philadelphia, Pa. and Boston, Mass.; as well as Connecticut. Although his home was in Connecticut, he never forgot his love of Iowa. Mr. Maher was an alumnus of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and the University of Iowa.

Mr. Maher entered the Army the day after high school graduation. He was part of the occupation at Shinegawa, Japan with the 141st Detachment of the 8th Army. He began his career in business as a store demonstrator with Salada Foods while a junior at the University of Iowa. He held several positions in the Salada Foods Company, including director of marketing.

In 1968, Mr. Maher went to work for Schweppes as a national sales manager. In 1974 he was appointed vice president of sales for the L. Rose Co. division. In 1982 he was appointed vice president of sales for Rose Holland House division. He was named vice president of trade and development for Mott's USA in 1987. Upon his retirement in 1995, he began a new career as a private consultant for Cadbury Schweppes. He worked until the day he entered the hospital.

John Maher loved God, his family, his country, his community and his work.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lydia; his three loving children, daughter Debbie and her husband Edward of New Fairfield, Conn., daughter Cathleen Mitchell of Kissimmee, Fla., and son Patrick Maher and his wife Tracy of New Fairfield, Conn.; and his precious grandchildren, including Tara, Bridget, Ryan, Patrick and Timothy Krompinger, Kelly Mitchell, and Meaghan and Daniel Maher. Survivors also include one sister, Gloria Fagan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four brothers, Dennis Maher of Westchester, Ill., Dick Maher of Fairfield, Conn., Bill Maher of Davenport, Iowa and Jim Maher of Overland Park, Kan.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, 8:30 a.m., at St. Edward's Church in New Fairfield.

Calling hours are on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. A Rosary will be said at the wake.

Dorris A. Stratman

Dorris A. Stratman, age 74, of New Milford, formerly of Bethel, died on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at the Glen Hill Convalescent Center. She was the wife of the late John J. Stratman Jr.

Mrs. Stratman was born on May 27, 1925 in Harrisonburg, Va., a daughter of the late Clevius C. and Ruth (Layman) Apple.

Mrs. Stratman was employed by the federal government in Washington, D.C. for 12 years. She was also a real estate agent in New Jersey, where she had resided for four years. Mrs. Stratman moved to Bethel in 1967 and was employed with the Bethel school system for 17 years, as secretary to the superintendent of schools and personnel director. At the time of her retirement she moved to New Milford, where she was employed with Stop & Shop supermarkets from 1994 until 1998.

She is survived by her son, John J. Stratman III of New Milford, Conn.; three daughters, Cecilia "Sam" Altieri of Venice, Fla., Carol A. Keenan of Michigan and Patricia S. Cooper of Middleburg, Va.; one brother, Carr Apple of Bumpass, Va.; a granddaughter with whom she lived, Heather S. Alves; 11 other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stratman was predeceased by her son, William R. Stratman.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 40 North St., Danbury,CT 06810 or the Leukemia Society of America, 300 Research Pkwy., Suite 310, Meriden, CT 06450.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 a.m., at the Church of St. Mary, Bethel, Conn. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Bethel.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Conn.

John J. Smyrski

John J. Smyrski, 84, of 228 Merryall Road, New Milford, died Tuesday at New Milford Nursing Home.

Born in New Milford, Oct. 13, 1914, he was a son of the late Adam M. and Sophie Gawel Smyrski.

Mr. Smyrski owned and operated the family farm in the Merryall section of New Milford and was a lover of the land. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford, and a member of the Friends of Merryall Chapel and Litchfield County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by a sister, Sophie F. Smyrski of New Milford.

Funeral services are on Saturday at 12:00 noon in St. Francis Xavier Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment is in St. Francis Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Northville Volunteer Fire Department, Route 202, New Milford, CT 06776.

Arrangements are by the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, CT 06776.
