Paul J. Palinkas Jr.

Paul J. Palinkas Jr., age 78, ofHemet, California, died Monday, July 5, at Cloverleaf Healthcare in Hemet.

He was born in Norwalk, September 12, 1920, son of the late Paul J. and Kathleen Herman Palinkas Sr. and had lived in Hemet for the past 26 years. He was a finish carpenter in Norwalk and Hemet for 35 years and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Hemet and of the Hemet Elks Club, was an avid square dancer and stamp collector, and also raised parakeets.

Survivors include his wife Audrey Palinkas of Bethel; 5 sons, George and Gary Palinkas, of Norwalk; Gregory and Grant Palinkas, of Danbury; and Glenn Palinkas of Beacon Falls, Conn.; 6 daughters, Alice Brown, Ave Dube, Aileen and Audrey Lynn Palinkas, all of Danbury; Anita Moore of Marietta, Ga.; Georgia and April Chemero of Sherman; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a brother, William Palinkas, and two sisters, Dorothy and Kathryn Palinkas, all of Norwalk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 13, at 10 a.m., at St. Matthew Church, Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, with interment to follow at St. John Cemetery. Friends may call at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Robert T. Sanford

Robert T. Sanford, age 72, husband of Viola (Hoyt) Sanford of Nunnawauk Meadows, Newtown, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in the Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Sanford was born in Milford, CT, June 2, 1927, a son of the late Henry and Eda (Spencer) Sanford. He was an Electrical Contractor until his retirement in 1980. A resident of Newtown the past 22 years, he previously lived in Bethel. During World War II, Mr. Sanford served in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Peter Sanford of Danbury, and Michael Bierbower of New Milford; two daughters, Nancy Carlson of New Milford and Karen Perrone of Northfield, CT; two sisters, Helen McElwee of Westport and Marion Baxter of Ridgefield. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Bierbower.

Private funeral services will be held Monday in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Burial will be in Bald Hill Cemetery, Wilton, CT. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492.

Edith "Dolly" Fournier

Edith "Dolly" G. Fournier, 98, of Parkwood Terrace, Danbury, and formerly of Norwalk, died July 5 at Glen Hill Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Edgar C. Fournier.

Born in Everett, Mass., July 1, 1901, she was the daughter of the late Alfred J. and Elva (Grove) Goddard. She graduated from Massachusetts in the Boston area and attended Harvard Medical School for two years.

Mrs. Fournier was employed as a laboratory technician. She had worked for Dr. White and Dr. Minor, who was dean of Harvard Dental School.

Mrs. Fournier resided in Braintree, Mass., until 1953 when she moved to the Norwalk area. In 1974 she moved to Danbury. She was a past volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Surviving are a son, Robert Fournier of Danbury; a daughter, Anita Gildersleeve of New Milford; two sisters, Mabel and Elva, both of Massachusetts; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT, on Saturday July 24, 1999, at 1 p.m. Cremation took place at the direction of the family.

There were no calling hours.

Eva Maria Sophia Grant

Eva Maria Sophia Grant, 63, of Pine Hill Road, New Fairfield, and wife of Richard T. Grant, died Thursday at Danbury Hospital.

She was born in Nordlingen, Germany, March 25, 1936, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (Houk) Miller.

Mrs. Grant was educated at the University of Munich. She was a Customer Relations Supervisor for Readers Digest for more than 25 years before retiring in February of 1998. Mrs. Grant was a member and active participant of the New Fairfield United Methodist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son, Kyle Shrig of Milton, N.Y.; her daughter, Amy Ryan of Pleasantville, N.Y.; two brothers, Fred Muller of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Conrad Muller of France; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Christian Children's Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 85066, Richmond, Va. 23261.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.

Eleanor B. Williams

Eleanor B. Williams died July 10, 1999, at the age of 88. She was the widow of Edwin J. Williams and lived at 45 Mist Hill Drive, Brookfield. Mrs. Williams was born in New York City, Aug. 22, 1910, daughter of the late Nelson and Anna Wendt Rowan and received her education at Katonah High School.

She was an office worker and secretary for various companies and the Yale College Club. She retired in 1965.

Mr. and Mrs. Williams celebrated 63 years of marriage and had settled in the Brookfield community 30 years ago.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Clare Ingham officiating. Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y., on Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dorothy H. Streaman

Dorothy H. Streaman, 89, formerly of 19 Main St., Danbury, died Thursday at New Milford Nursing Home, her residence for the past year. She had been married to the late Richard J. Streaman on March 17, 1944.

Mrs. Streaman was born Sept. 4, 1909, a daughter of the late Alfred H. and Marion Greeley Higson, in Danbury, and was a product of the Danbury public school system and the Gateway Finishing School in New Haven. She continued her education at the Danbury Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse with the Class of 1936.

She began her career as a dietitian and school nurse at Trinity Pawling School for Boys, in Pawling, N.Y. She also taught nurses to serve in World War II for the Red Cross. She later worked as an office nurse for the late Dr. G. Robert Eckert, of Danbury, for many years.

Mrs. Streaman moved her family to Tucson, Ariz., when Dr. Eckert closed his office. She was employed as the head of the newborn nursery at Tucson Medical Center. Upon returning to Danbury, she worked for the Danbury Nurses Registry as a private-duty nurse.

She had been a member of the Mary Wooster Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, since 1937, and was the first chairman of the Mary Wooster Chapter Junior Committee. She later served as chapter regent and as a state officer.

Mrs. Streaman was a member of the First Congregational Church, where she was baptized the year the new church was dedicated, in 1909. She served on the diaconate board and was a member of the Women's Society of the church.

She was a member of the AARP, Danbury Chapter; the Danbury Hospital Nurses Alumni Association; and was a past member of the Newtown Country Club.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Leonard Silva of Danbury; and her grandchildren, Richard B. Silva of Phoenix, Michelle Silva-Parsell and her husband, Royal, of Bethel, Alan J. Silva of Phoenix, and Courtney E. Silva of Danbury; three great-grandchildren, Kalynn A. Silva of Phoenix and Brett and Syara Parsell of Bethel; a sister, Sally H. Griffing of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Fanny H. McDougall, Elizabeth H. Bullock and Jane H. Jennings.

Friends will be received at The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main St., Danbury, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held at The Homestead Thursday at 11 a.m.

Charles Winans

Charles Winans, 62, of Dunrobin Lane, Watertown, died Friday at his home. He was the husband of Dolores (Mongillo) Winans.

Mr. Winans was born in Pelham, N.Y., April 9, 1937, son of the late Arthur and Hortense (Seldner) Winans.

He was a graduate of Danbury High School. He received his bachelor of science from Fairfield University in 1958 and his master's from the University of Hartford in 1965.

He retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Vocational Education as a vocational rehabilitation counselor.

He was a former member of the board of directors at Assumption College. He was a Literacy Volunteer in Waterbury. He also volunteered at the Interfaith Ministries Foodbank and Waterbury Hospital. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Christopher G. Winans of New Fairfield, Matthew A. Winans of Burlington, Mass., and Timothy J. Winans of Manhattan, N.Y.; two brothers, B. Garvey Winans of Georgetown, S.C., and Joseph Winans of Danbury; five sisters, Virginia Winans and, Madeline Winans, both of Chester, Marie Galbraith of Thomaston, Patricia Vandewater of Danbury and Rita Larkin of Israel; and two grandchildren, Grace Marie Winans and Peter Joseph Winans, both of New Fairfield.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Peter's Cemetery, Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury. Memorial Mass will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 574 Main St., Watertown. There are no calling hours. Arrangements by Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown.

Ruth M. Melatti

Ruth M. Melatti died May 30, 1999, at the Candlewood Care Center at the age of 91. She was the wife of Sandy Melatti and had lived at 36 Blueberry Hill Road in Bridgewater.

Mrs. Melatti was born in Bridgeport, Conn., March 2, 1908, daughter of the late William and Bertha L'Hommerieu Purdy. She was a telephone operator with SNET Co. for more than 20 years and retired at the age of 60.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Bridgewater, the Bridgewater Garden Club and the Bridgewater Grange. She was active in the Senior Citizen Group in New Milford.

Besides her husband of New Milford, she is survived by her son, Roderick, and his wife, Patti, both of Bridgewater; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, William.

Graveside services will be held at the East Cemetery, Manchester, Conn., on Wednesday at 2 pm. There are no calling hours.

The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley F. Kunicki

Stanley F. Kunicki died May 30, 1999, at the age of 74. He was the husband of Loretta Wayman Kunicki and lived at 34 Wildman St., Danbury.

Mr. Kunicki was born in Torrington, Conn., June 18, 1924, son of the late Anthony and Stella (Zulaski) Kunicki and attended Torrington schools.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II and served on Hawaii and Midway Island. He later participated in the operations at Majuro and Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He received the Pacific Medal with one Battle Star, the American Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal and a Special Certificate of Appreciation. He returned to serve as a recruiter in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was discharged as staff sergeant.

Mr. Kunicki retired in 1988 as letter carrier for the Bethel Post Office and from Barden Corp., as a machine setter.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Danbury and served as eucharistic minister and adult altar server. He was a Knight of Columbus-Torrington, NARF 2069; a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1042; and the Marine Corps League Hatters Division. The Council of Veterans of Danbury honored him by selecting him as parade marshal of the 1997 Memorial Day parade.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, James, and daughter-in-law, Barbara, of New Fairfield, his daughter Elizabeth; son-in-law Steven Bumbala IV of Danbury; four grandchildren, Zachary and Audrey Kunicki and Steve V and Joshua Bumbala; five sisters, Josephine Banasik of Plainville, Conn., Helen Hybner and Wanda Strzeskowski of New Britain, Conn., Stella Kunicki and Jane Solwoda of Torrington, Conn.; several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday. at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 12 Cottage St., Danbury. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Diane M. Carvalho

Diane M. Carvalho, 52, wife of Edward J. Carvalho, of 9 Driftway Point Road, Danbury, died at Danbury Hospital on Monday morning.

She was born in Danbury, July 27, 1946, daughter of the late Albert Tilford and the late Gertrude (Valance) Tilford Negri. She grew up in Danbury and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1964.

She had worked as a nurse's aide for many years at the Glen Hill Convalescent Home in Danbury and had also volunteered for Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. and Deana Carvalho of New Milford; a daughter, Nicole M. Carvalho of Bethel; her stepfather, Joseph Negri of Danbury; an aunt, Marcella Fink of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Carolyn Dukenski of St. James' Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will take place in Wooster Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Jane M. Knowlton

Jane M. Knowlton, 79, widow of Danford F. Knowlton, died on Monday, May 31, 1999 after a short illness.

She was born on February 7, 1920 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Jane Brown Wellbrock and Herman Wellbrock. She was educated in New York City schools and was employed as a secretary before her marriage in 1944.

Mrs. Knowlton moved with her husband and two sons to New Preston, Conn. in 1954. She was an attendant of the Christian Science Sunday School and Christian Science churches from early childhood.

Active in civic affairs, Mrs. Knowlton was president of the Washington-New Preston PTA, a director of the New Preston-Warren V.N.A., president of the League of Women Voters of Washington at three different times, a member of the Temporary Regional School Study Committee, member of the Zoning Advisory Committee, board member of the Fair Housing Council of Greater Waterbury, Inc., board member of the W.C.S.F., director of the Village Improvement Society, secretary of the Board of the League of Women Voters of Connecticut, delegate to the National Congress on Volunteerism and Citizenship from the 6th Congressional District, Democratic registrar of voters and member of the Board of Selectmen of the Town of Washington. She was given the Good Neighbor Award in 1999 as a member of the New Preston Women's Club, Inc. and was a member of the League of Women Voters of Litchfield County.

Mrs. Knowlton leaves two sons, Eric L. Knowlton of Kennebunk, Maine and Brock E. Knowlton of New Preston, Conn., as well as four grandchildren.

Private funeral and burial services are being held on Friday at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Phalen Funeral Home of Torrington, Conn. is in charge of arrangements.
