Ruth Giglio

Ruth Giglio, 77, mother of Gail Calandrino of Bethel, died Wednesday evening, October 20, 1999. She was the wife of the late Joseph Giglio.

Besides her daughter, Gail and son-in-law, Anthony Calandrino, Mrs. Giglio is survived by her two sons, Robert and Bruce Giglio of New York. She was the loving grandmother of Cynthia, Jennifer and Samantha Calandrino and Megan Giglio and Alex J. Giglio. She was the great grandmother of Taylor Rose. She is also survived by a sister, a brother as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Giove Funeral Home in Middle Island, N.Y.

Friends may call on the family Saturday evening after 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at 330 Gillette Street, Dix Hills, New York.

Louise D. Cooper

Louise D. Cooper, 91, of Danbury, died on Thursday at Glen Hill/Harborside Convalescent Center, Danbury.

Mrs. Cooper was the wife of the late Frederick C. Cooper.

She was born in Eden, Maryland February 11, 1908, a daughter of Clayton E. and Martha (Coulborn) Dykes.

Mrs. Cooper was a registered nurse before her retirement and an avid "Rock Hound" and collector of "everything". She was a member of the Baptist Church in Clark, New Jersey.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Cooper of New Fairfield; her daughter, Patricia A. Sandoz of Miami, Florida; three sisters, Doris Carey of Maryland, Agnes Greenberger of Millville, Delaware and Gladys Keown of Baltimore, Maryland; and three grandchildren, Dawn Blair of Danbury, Karen Caraballo of Torrington and Roger Sandoz of Danbury.

Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Calling hours are Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, Maryland.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Holloway Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery, Eden, Maryland.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.

Margaret "Peggy" Ann Johnson

Margaret "Peggy" Ann Johnson, age 52, longtime resident of Millbrae, Calif., died at her Livermore, Calif. home October 15, 1999. She was the wife of Edward G. Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 2, 1947 in Danbury, a daughter of the late James Anthony and Margaret Mary Shortell Pawloski. A graduate of San Francisco State College, she was employed as a Ticket Service Agent by Monarch Airlines for 3 years. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed scuba diving, snow skiing and traveling. She was an animal lover who raised dogs and when younger was an avid horseback rider.

Loving mother of Jamie B. Funez of Napa, Calif. and James Walsh of Millbrae, Calif. Devoted grandmother of twin granddaughters, Brianna and Jessica Funez of Napa, Calif. Dear sister of Jamie Muller, Joan Logee, Diane Hambrick, Julie Ann Vicalvi, Barbara Leitzel and James Pawloski.

A graveside service will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel. Family will receive friends in the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m.

Donald J. Troccola Jr.

Donald J. Troccola Jr., of Danbury, died Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at his home. He was 45.

Born in Danbury June 4, 1954, he was a son of Donald N. and Geraldine (Boullianne) Troccola Sr. of Danbury. He was a lifetime area resident.

Mr. Troccola attended Danbury High School and was self-employed.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Gerald A. Troccola and Joseph M. Troccola; a sister, Susan Ann Troccola and a maternal grandmother, Hazel Boullianne, all of Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Crematory, Bridgeport, at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

The Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude (Aunt Gert) Carroll
Gertrude (Aunt Gert) M. Carroll, wife of the late George Carroll, died October 15, 1999 in Anderson, S.C. Mrs. Carroll was born on November 2, 1911 in Manitou, N.Y. to the late Patrick O'Donnell and Margaret Morrissey O'Donnell. She retired from Pride Cleaners in Danbury and moved to Anderson, S.C. in 1987 to make her home with Dorothy and Edward Lattin. She was a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Anderson, S.C. Mrs. Carroll leaves behind nieces, Dorothy Lattin of Anderson, S.C., Carol Silva of Danbury, Vicki Brogna of Southbury and nephews, Dennis and Adam Silva of Danbury, William Leach of New Milford and many other great nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Sunday, October 24th at 2:00 at United Methodist Church, 5 Clapboard Ridge, Danbury.

Joseph T. Maloney
Memorial services for Joseph T. Maloney, age 83, of Danbury, who died on October 10th, will be held on Friday, October 22nd at the Hull Funeral Home, Sixty Division St., Danbury, at 7:30 p.m. A gathering of friends will take place at the funeral home on Friday from 6:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

Barbara Ann Erlenbach
Mrs. Barbara Ann Erlenbach, 65, of Mebane, N.C., died suddenly at her home on October 18, 1999. She was the wife of Philip Ellis Erlenbach. Born in Bronx, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late George Washington Focht Freeman and the late Dorothy Pendleton Freeman. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Alpha Phi Sorority and President of the Margaret Brawley Garden Club in Durham, N.C. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Erlenbach is survived by her daughter, Wendy Anne Ransbury of Pleasanton, Calif.; her sons, Paul Randall Erlenbach of Chapel Hill, N.C. and George Bradford Erlenbach of Charlotte, N.C. as well as four grandchildren. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, N.C. from 6 until 8 Thursday evening. Other times they will be at the residence.

Eulalio Raphael "Lalo" Burgos
Eulalio Raphael "Lalo" Burgos, son of Abner Burgos-Rodriguez and Diana (Mitchell) Burgos and brother of Maya Nicole Burgos, died on October 18, 1999 at the age of 21. He was a long time resident of Danbury and a member of Victory Christian Center, where he gave his heart to the Lord. Lalo played in the Viking Football League and in the DAYO Basketball and Baseball leagues and was a member of Junior Achievement. He had graduated from Danbury High School in 1995, where he had played varsity football. Lalo continued his education and graduated in May of 1999 from the University of Georgia, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Communication and had been active in the "Big Brother" program at the university. In addition to his parents and sister, Lalo is survived by his maternal grandmother, Adina Mitchell of Long Island and his paternal grandmother, Rev. Angelina Burgos of Danbury; his uncles, Uriel, Magdiel, Freddy, Carlton, Danny, Caleb, Hiram, Luis, Tony, G.G., Tommy and Sidney; his titis, Lolo, Jeannie, Ruthie, Mari, Dorcas, Glenda, Laverne, Veronica, Mundy, Wendy, Nellie, Carmen, Karen and Valerie; a godsister, Gina and many beloved cousins and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Ralph Mitchell and Eulalio Burgos. The family takes comfort in knowing that they will be with Lalo again when they all meet the Lord and share in eternity. The celebration of Lalo Burgos' life will be forthcoming. Arrangements will be handled by the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. Details regarding the calling hours and service will follow. Anthony S. Smyrski

Anthony J. Smyrski, of Palm Springs, Florida, passed away October 15th at age 86.

An area resident of Palm Springs since 1977, he moved to Florida after retiring from Henry Abbott Vocational Technical School in Danbury as Automotive Department Head.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Bayley Smyrski; four sisters, Ann McIntire of Ellington, Mary Stebbins of New Milford, Carolyn Chase of South Kent; Stephanie Lasley of Stuart, Virginia and a brother Gabriel Smyrski of Pinellas Park, Florida.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Jeannette P. Wiegand

Jeannette P. Wiegand, 86 of Norwalk, wife of the late Martin J. Wiegand, died Sunday at home.

Born in Norwalk on July 4, 1913 the daughter of the late Emil and Christine Jurco Singewald and has been a lifelong resident.

She was a member of the Norwalk Quartette Club Ladies Auxiliary and the Quartette Club Singing Society.

Surviving is a son, Martin J. Wiegand Jr. of Danbury; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

Services and Interment will be private.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

Dr. George J. David

Dr. George J. David, age 63 and a native of Danbury, died on September 28 at the University Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio from complications of leukemia. He was the Chairman of the Radiology Department of St. Thomas Hospital Medical Center in Akron, Ohio.

Dr. David was born in Danbury on November 4, 1935. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. David. A graduate of Danbury High School Class of 1953, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before being appointed to the United States Naval Academy.

After graduating the Academy in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, he served as a Gunnery Officer of USS McNair until he was appointed by Admiral Rickover to Advanced US Naval Nuclear Engineering School where he earned the equivalent of Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering.

Dr. David received his degree in Medicine from Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship in Radiology at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

Dr. David was a Trustee at St. Thomas Hospital Medical Center after it merged with Akron City Hospital, practicing at both hospitals. He also served as Trustee of Summa Health Systems.

He was the author of numerous scholarly publications and he lectured before professional groups in the United States, Belgium, Mexico and Chile.

After residing in Cleveland Heights for a number of years, he resided in Hudson, Ohio.

Dr. David is survived by his wife, the former Audrey Delaney of Bethel; a daughter, Pamela Christiansen of Arlington, Virginia and a son, Captain John David of the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Japan.

He is survived by his sister, Marie of Danbury and his nephews, Philip and John Esteban and a niece, Mary Hanna, all of Danbury. He is also survived by many relatives in the Danbury and Bethel area. Dr. David was predeceased by his sisters, Adele David, Evelyn Esteban and his brother, Joseph David.

A memorial service was held at First Congregational Church of Hudson, Ohio. Dr. David was an avid sailor and after cremation his ashes were scattered over the waters of Penoscot Bay, Maine where he enjoyed sailing.

Andrew Paul Kohler

Andrew Paul Kohler, 60, of 573 South Main Street, Brattleboro, Vt., died Saturday morning at the home of his daughter following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Kohler was born in Bridgeport on July 12, 1939, the son of John and Charlotte (Stacey) Kohler. He was raised in Dummerston, Vt. as well as Easton, where he attended local schools prior to moving to Bridgeport with his family.

A former resident of Rancho Cucamonga, Ca., he had made his home with his daughter in Brattleboro, Vt. since May. While a resident of California, he was employed as a truck driver. He had also worked for G.S. Precision in Brattleboro, Vt. as a machinist.

He had served in the US Marine Corps stationed at the US Naval Shore Battery in New London. He was a member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5.

Of his hobbies and interests he enjoyed bowling, basketball and all spectator sports.

On October 11, 1963 in Springfield, Mass., he was married to Barbara Potter. The marriage ended in divorce.

Survivors include his mother of Brattleboro, Vt.; three sons, Andrew Kohler and Eric Kohler, both of Brattleboro, Vt. and Kurt Kohler of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Shirley Kohler of Brattleboro, Vt.; one stepson, LeRoy Hescock of Rutland, Vt.; a stepdaughter, Randi Powling of Jamestown, N.Y.; three brothers, William Kohler of Brattleboro, Vt., Ernest Kohler of Hinsdale, Vt. and Frederick Kohler of Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Janet Ferreone of Bridgeport and Charlotte Gallagher of Aberdeen, N.C.; two stepbrothers, James Kohler of Chicago, Ill. and Patrick Paston of Las Vegas, N.V.; a stepsister, Margaret Paston Katz of Ringe, N.H.; 16 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Conrad Kohler and Robert Kohler.

A celebration of Mr. Kohler's life will be conducted Thursday, October 21st at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, Linden Street, Brattleboro, Vt.

Interment with full military honors will follow in Locust Ridge Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street.

Maxwell Joseph Hansford

Maxwell Joseph Hansford passed away Sunday, October 17, 1999 after a brief illness at Danbury Hospital.

He was born March 6, 1921 in Ontario, Canada. A Veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, in 1956 he and his wife along with their daughter moved to Danbury, then New Fairfield.

Maxwell was employed by the Barden Corporation for over 30 years as Credit Manager. He retired in 1983. He then moved to St. Petersburg, Florida.

He leaves his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Karen Hansford; his grandson, Vaughn Hansford and wife, Sandra and two great grandsons, Ryan and Tyler, all of New Fairfield. He also leaves a sister, Barbara Bannister of Stroud, Ontario, Canada.

Cremation will take place on Tuesday, October 19, 1999.

Donations can be made in his memory to the New Fairfield Congregational Church or to the American Diabetic Association.

Olin B. Fortier

Olin B. Fortier, 95, of New Milford, husband of Mary Stankus Fortier, died Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Candlewood Valley Health Center.

He was born July 5, 1904, in Vergennes, Vermont, a son of the late Frank and Mae Beardsley Fortier.

Mr. Fortier attended schools in Vermont and Maine, and took up residence in Waterbury in 1924, where he held occupations as salesman, millworker and groundskeeper. He was an active member of the Wigwam and Chase Gun Clubs for more than 30 years. He won numerous awards and certificates of merit for marksmanship and assisted in the training of the State National Guard during World War II, for which he received several citations.

Besides his wife of 72 years, he is survived by two sons, Olin F. Fortier of Florida and John A. Fortier of Mississippi; two daughters, Mary F. Araya and Helen I Connors, both of New Milford; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in Vermont and Rhode Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 18, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, New Milford, with Father Tom Ptaszynski officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford. Friends may call Sunday, October 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, October 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, CT.
