Kathleen M. Hathaway

Kathleen M. "Kathy" Hathaway, R.N., 55, of 22 Judith Dr., Danbury, wife of Gary Hathaway, died at her residence on Monday.

She was born in New York City, August 26, 1944, daughter of the late Thomas and Kathleen (Walsh) Davey. Although she had lived in the New York area prior to making Danbury her home in 1973, she had summered here with her parents, since childhood. She was a graduate of Elizabeth Seton College, Yonkers, N.Y. in 1965; received her Registered Nurses' degree from St. Vincent's Hospital in Staten Island, N.Y. in 1967; her BA degree from Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y. in 1976 and her MHSA (Masters in Health Service Administration) from Antioch College, Keene, N.H. in 1984. Mrs. Hathaway served as Assistant Administrator at Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care 1984-1985 and presently was serving as the Director for the Community Center for Behavioral Health at Danbury Hospital, since 1985.

She was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Ridgefield, had served as a girl scout troop leader, a member of the Regional Mental Health Board and various other professional and community affiliations.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Kathleen Mary, both of Danbury; a stepson and godson, Stephen Hathaway of the Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Sarah T. Harrington of Phoenix, Ariz. and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted from the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Friday morning at 9:45 and to St. Elizabeth Seton Church at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the Oncology Department at the Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810 or to the Regional Hospice of Western CT, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Alfred Leonard Sr.

Alfred Leonard Sr., 79, of Castle Hill Drive, Bethel, died Monday at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Leonard was the husband of the late Shirley LeMien Leonard.

He was born in West Haven, June 17, 1920, a son of Harry George and Mary Elizabeth (Archer) Leonard.

Mr. Leonard was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Force and was stationed in Italy.

He moved from Norwalk to Danbury in 1961 and was the former branch manager of Litner Feed and Grain in Norwalk. In 1982 he retired from Ridgefield Supply where he had been employed for 21 years. During his retirement, Mr. Leonard was a salesman at Hub Wine and Liquor in Bethel. He was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Danbury, a member of the V.F.W. Post 935 as a past State Commander and a member of the American Legion Post 100 as an adjutant in Bethel. Mr. Leonard was superintendent of rentals for Connecticut Agricultural Fair, for over 25 years was the secretary and past master of Danbury Grange and past master of Fairfield County Pomona Grange. He was a 7th Degree Grange member nationally. For over 40 years, Mr. Leonard was on the Board of Directors for the Bethel Baseball League. The Bethel Park & Recreation named a field in Stony Hill Baseball Park after him.

He is survived by three sons, Alfred H., Jr. of East Hartford, Fred W. of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Robert J. Leonard of Bethel; a daughter, Helen Angelicola of Naugatuck; a brother, William Leonard of Fairfield; seven grandchildren; one great grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Legion Post 100, 7 Elizabeth Street, Bethel, CT 06801 or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Bethel, 1 School Street, Bethel, CT 06801.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.

Services are at 11 a.m. at St. James' Episcopal Church, 25 West Street, Danbury.

Sharron Anne LaCava

Sharron Anne LaCava, 61, of 93-3 West Wooster St., Danbury, died Monday, November 15, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital.

Born in Danbury March 26, 1938, she was a daughter of Josephine M. (Greer) LaCava Decker of Danbury and the late Joseph F. LaCava Sr.

Miss LaCava graduated from St. Peter's Grammar School and Danbury High School. In 1974 she received her BS Degree and Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education from Western CT State University. She student taught at Hawley School in Newtown.

Miss LaCava was a Dental Hygienist for Dr. Levy of Danbury for many years. Following that she was employed by the Savings Bank of Danbury and Center Bank in Bethel. For a brief period of time she pursued her teaching career in Australia before returning to Danbury.

Besides her mother, Miss LaCava is survived by a sister, Lorraine Furino of Danbury; a brother, Joseph F. LaCava Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann of Newtown; nieces and nephews, Dianne, Robert, Robin, Jane, Joseph and Shalor; and her best friend, Karen Doutney of Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

John R. Rhode

John R. Rhode, 87, father of Alex D. Rhode and Judith R. Hibbard of Danbury, died on Sunday evening, November 14, 1999 at the Bethel Healthcare Center, Bethel.

Mr. Rhode resided at 137 Partridge Lane, Fairfield and was the husband of Aspasia (Manganaris) Rhode.

He was born in Bridgeport, May 19, 1912, a son of the late Konstatine and Penelope (Flemotomos) Rodetis. He attended Bridgeport schools and graduated from Columbia University. He was retired from the Bullard Corporation of Bridgeport retiring in 1967.

In addition to his wife, son and daughter, he is survived by an additional son, John R. Rhode Jr. of Rowayton; a brother, James Rodetis of Northport, L.I., New York as well as two grandchildren.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, with the Rev. Peter Karloutsos, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends will be received in the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Contributions in Mr. Rhode's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

The Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Sullivan

Teresa "Terry" La Magna Sullivan, age 70, of 27 High View Terrace, Bethel, died at home on Monday. She was the wife of Michael L. Sullivan.

She was born in New York City May 7, 1929, a daughter of the late Guiseppe and Assunta La Magna. She was married to Michael on November 23, 1947, and had been a resident of Bethel since 1954. In 1979, she earned her B.S. Degree in Community Health from Western Connecticut State University. She was a Nursery School Teacher and before going to college, she worked in various offices in the area, including the Danbury Hospital, Union Trust, Marcus Dairy, Grandway and Mr. Luongo of Bethel. She was a member of St. Mary Church Parish in Bethel and also had volunteered at the Johnson School in Bethel as a reading partner.

Besides her husband Mike, she is survived by 4 children, Denise Sullivan of Madison, Mark Sullivan of New York City, Timothy Sullivan and his wife, Lyn of New Milford and Ann Marie S. Priolo and her husband, Randy of Mission, Texas; and ten grandchildren, Liza and Joseph Wadanoli, Rose Marie and Patricia Sullivan, Diana Maldonado, Timothy and Tyler Sullivan, Maranda, Michael and Morgan Priolo.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Rd., Wilton, CT 06897-2523, or to the Bethel VNA, One School St., Bethel, CT 06801.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Bethel, Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.

The family will receive friends at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4 and in the evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ethel G. Grouse

Ethel G. Grouse died November 13, 1999 at the Bethel Health Care in Bethel at the age of 91. She was the wife of the late Andrew J. Grouse Sr. and lived at 101 Simon Rd. in Bethel.

She was born in Pittsburg, Pa. February 7, 1908, daughter of the late Charles and Jeanne Ironside Beale and came to Danbury as a child and attended Danbury schools. She settled in Bethel ten years ago prior to entering Bethel Health Care.

Mrs. Grouse was a retired Hydro Therapist at the Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown for 25 years.

She is survived by her son, Andrew J. Grouse Jr. of Brookfield and her daughters, Joan McAllister of Danbury and Sandra Marquis of Newtown; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Betty Jean Grouse and her grandson Andrew J. Grouse III.

Funeral services will be private. There are no calling hours.

Beatrice (Ganung) Butler

Beatrice (Ganung) Butler, 77, of 32 East Gate Road, Danbury, died Sunday, November 14, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late William N. Butler.

Born in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. July 24, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Mary (Towey) Ganung. She was a graduate of Katonah High School in Katonah, N.Y.

Mrs. Butler worked as a Secretary/Bookkeeper for the Town of Somers, N.Y. prior to her retirement. She moved from Mahopac, N.Y. to Danbury three years ago.

She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Henry and Tracy Frinton, both of Danbury and her son, Louis Butler of Carmel, N.Y.; two brothers, Leon Ganung and Robert Ganung, both of Daytona Beach, Florida; two sisters, Olivia Way of Stormville, N.Y. and Audrey Waterbury of Mahopac, N.Y.; eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Butler was predeceased by her daughter, Roberta Lee Butler and her sister, Betty Collins.

Funeral services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Union Valley Cemetery, Mahopac, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Dr. Donald A. Davis

Dr. Donald A. Davis, age 91 of Southbury, died at Danbury Hospital on November 12th. He was the loving husband for 71 years of Jean Parks Davis.

Dr. Davis was born August 29, 1908 in Danbury, son of the late Alfred L. and Gertrude Bouton Davis. Dr. Davis attended Brown University and graduated from Columbia University where he also attained his Medical Degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. As well as his private practice, he was Professor of Clinical Surgery at New York School of Medicine. He was a Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the School and at Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Davis was a member of the American Medical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member and past-president of the New York Surgical Society and member of the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association. During World War II, Dr. Davis served for four years as a Lt. Col. in the A.U.S. Medical Corps with the 368th Fighter Group in Europe.

Funeral service is tentatively scheduled for St. James Episcopal Church, Danbury, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury. Family will receive friends in the Hull Funeral Home, Sixty Division Street, Danbury, Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

Rachel W. Burnell

Rachel W. Burnell, age 77, wife of Donald B. Burnell of 1 Russett Road, Sandy Hook died Saturday November 13, 1999 in the Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Burnell was born in Skowhegan, Maine March 12, 1922, a daughter of the late Joel and Etha (Reed) Whitney. She was a full time resident of Maine until 1966. While in Maine she was employed by the United States Soil Conservation Agency as writer of their award winning Newsletter. From 1966 to 1969 she was a resident of Arkansas and from 1969 to 1972 of Philadelphia, Pa.

In 1972, Mrs. Burnell moved to Sandy Hook and began a career in Real Estate Sales. She was employed until her retirement, as an agent and broker by the Walter Maurer Agency and later by the Richard S. Jowdy and Merrill Lynch Agencies. She was a breeder of award winning Cocker Spaniels and had been a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Burnell most enjoyed spending time at her most beloved Embden Pond in Maine.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, David of Sandy Hook and Duane of Carmel, Calif.; a sister, Fayetta O'Donnell of Maine; two granddaughters, Allyson and Abigail of Carmel, Calif. and several nieces and nephews, including Leslie Jackson of Booth Bay Harbor, Maine.

A Memorial service will take place next summer in Maine at the convenience of the family. Cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Crematory, Bridgeport. There are no calling hours. Ryta (Hennessey) Gillotti

Ryta (Hennessey) Gillotti, 83, of 19 Main Street, Danbury, died Saturday, November 13, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Gillotti Sr.

Born in Danbury August 13, 1916, she was a daughter of the late John F. and Margaret (Bradley) Hennessey. She was a Danbury High School Class of 1933 Graduate.

Mrs. Gillotti was employed by the State of Connecticut as a PBX Operator at Fairfield Hills State Hospital. She retired in 1980 after 12 years of service.

Mrs. Gillotti was a very active member of St. Peter Church. She belonged to the Ladies Guild and volunteered in the Thrift Shop.

She was a member of Retired CT State Employees Association, currently serving as Treasurer. She was also past President and served as Treasurer in 1993. Mrs. Gillotti was also a member of Retired Volunteer Service Program, assisting the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Association.

Mrs. Gilliotti is survived by three sons, Joseph P. Gillotti Jr. and his wife, Karen W. of Danbury, William J. Gillotti and his wife, Dr. Patrice S. of Ridgefield and Michael S. Gillotti of Danbury; a daughter, Mary Jane Guyer and her husband, David M. of North Branford; a sister, Margaret Kundrat of Danbury; five grandchildren, Jay and Donald Gillotti, Camille and Joe Gillotti and Maggie Guyer; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
