Robert J. Crossen
Robert J. Crossen, 60, of 22 Old Farm Road in New Fairfield, husband of Claressa (Joynt) Crossen, died Monday, May 24, 1999 at Danbury Hospital.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y. on June 8, 1938, son of the late James R. and Ann (Marx) Crossen. He graduated from Grace Dodge High School in Bronx, N.Y.
Mr. Crossen served in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine tender USS Fulton. He worked for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation for more than 20 years, retiring as a highway foreman in 1989. He then worked as a delivery person for the Airborne Express Company of Danbury. Mr. Crossen had moved to New Fairfield from the Bronx 31 years ago.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, James R. Crossen of Danbury and John M. Crossen of Brookfield; two daughters, Margaret C. McLean of Danbury and Maureen A. Schaedler of Southbury; one brother, Thomas W. Crossen of New Milford; one sister, Patricia Florio of Jensen Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Colleen and Michael Schaedler, Kate McLean and Erin Crossen. He was predeceased by a brother, James D. Crossen.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 11 a.m., at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery in New Fairfield.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Santa (Uncino) DiMattina
Santa (Uncino) DiMattina, 85, lifelong resident of the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, N.Y., mother of Roberta Ilardo of New Fairfield and wife of the late Anthony Thomas DiMattina, died at Hancock Hall on May 25, 1999 after a brief illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on December 1, 1913, daughter of the late Stephen and Giovanna (Mirabito) Uncino. She graduated from Bishop McDonald High School and attended Brooklyn College.
Mrs. DiMattina was employed as an English/language arts teacher at St. MaryStar of the Sea Elementary School by the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. She was a member of The Holy Name of Jesus parish in Brooklyn.
She is survived by a daughter, Roberta Ilardo of New Fairfield, Conn.; a son, Thomas DiMattina of Staten Island, N.Y.; a sister, Catherine Uncino of Brooklyn, N.Y. and five grandchildren, Janine Tesbir, Karen Leigh Ilardo, Anthony DiMattina, Amanda DiMattina and Victoria DiMattina.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 a.m., at St. Edward Church in New Fairfield. Burial will follow in St. JohnCemetery in Queens, N.Y.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

Marie Ullman
Marie Ullman, president of Ullman Devices Corporation of Ridgefield, Conn., died Saturday, May 22, 1999 at The Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, Conn. after a courageous, yearlong battle with respiratory disease.
Until her death, Mrs. Ullman headed a corporation founded in 1935 to manufacture hair dryers by her late husband, Robert Ullman. During World War II, the company converted its production lines to make specialized devices for the war effort. After the war, the company sold its hair dryer business and settled in Ridgefield, Conn. to manufacture precision hand tools for the automotive and other industries in the United States and Europe.
Mrs. Ullman had managed Ullman Devices Corporation since her husbanddeath in 1978. Under her leadership, a combination of innovative management and sophisticated manufacturing methods, such as robotics, was credited with quadrupling the companybusiness.
Ullman Devices employs 75 people at the Ridgefield facility, many of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years. Under Mrs. Ullmandirection, the company continued an active program, begun by Robert Ullman, to seek out and hire handicapped workers.
Mrs. Ullman lived in Wilton, Conn. She was a popular hostess and enthusiastic supporter of the arts and of artists. She also had been a generous donor to many charitable organizations, particularly those that helped children and homeless animals.
Mrs. Ullman was one of eight children born to Max and Sarah Jaffe Michaelson in Linlithgo, N.Y. She became a registered nurse in 1935, graduating from Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Michaelson Gordon, many adoring nieces and nephews, employees and friends.

Robert J. Lockwood
Robert J. Lockwood, 80, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999 at his home in Grace Meadows, Southbury.
Mr. Lockwood was born in Sandy Hook, Conn. on August 10, 1918, son of the late Fredrick and Isabelle (Conger) Lockwood. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and awarded many commendations, including the Purple Heart, a Bronze Ribbon with a Star, an Infantry Rifle Badge, the Germany Victory Ribbon and the Normandy Invasion Ribbon.
Mr. Lockwood was a machine operator for the Watkins Company in Sandy Hook for many years before his retirement. He was a member of VFW Post 1607 and American Legion Post 147, both in Southbury, and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was the first president of the Meadow Larks, a social group in Grace Meadows. A longtime Sandy Hook resident, he moved to Southbury 15 years ago.
Mr. Lockwood leaves several nieces and nephews, and is predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.
Services and burial will be private. Arrangements are by Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. South, Southbury.

Francis Leroy Gay Sr.
Francis Leroy Gay Sr., 77, died May 10, 1999 in Clewiston, Fla. He was the husband of Anna May Gay.
Mr. Gay was born in Danbury on October 14, 1921, son of the late Lewis and Ethel Gay. He attended schools in Ridgefield, South Salem and Katonah.
Mr. Gay served in World War II, touring in France, Germany and Italy. He was employed as a mechanic.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Gay Sr. of North Plainfield, N.J. and Gary Gay Sr. of Vernon, Vt.; three daughters, Sharron Simao, Darlene Brill and Deborah Hyde, all of Danbury, and their mother, Anna (Gay) Coffey of Danbury; four brothers, Bob Gay of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Fred Gay of South Salem, N.Y., Ralph Gay of Ridgefield and Donald Gay of New Fairfield; one sister, Evelyn Gannuscio of Thomaston, Conn.; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gay was predeceased by his eldest son, Francis Leroy Gay Jr.
Cremation took place in Clewiston, Fla. A memorial service will take place at a time to be announced by the family.
Boleslaw C. Szymanel
Boleslaw C. Szymanel, 93, of 15 Olive Street, Danbury, husband of the late Helen (Szymansky) Szymanel, died on Friday at the Glen Hill Convalescent Center, Danbury.
Mr. Szymanel was born in Peekskill, New York, March 27, 1906. Shortly after birth, he returned to Poland with his parents and remained in Poland until 1920 when he returned to the United States, first settling in Pennsylvania and then Danbury.
He was a former hatter with the Frank H. Lee Hat Company and in later years was employed by the Barden Corporation retiring in 1971.
Mr. Szymanel was an avid gardener.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church of Danbury.
Surviving are a son, Edward L. Szymanel of Danbury; a daughter, MaryAnn McDonald of Southington, CT; a brother and sister of Poland as well as three grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews.
The funeral will take place on Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. from the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Jeremiah J. Dempsey
Jeremiah "Jerry" J. Dempsey, age 87, of 215 Elizabeth Street, Derby. Entered into rest May 22, 1999 at his home with his loving family by his side. Born in Derby, Dec. 20, 1911. son of the late John T. and Margaret Walsh Dempsey. Jerry was a retired meter reader for 47-1/2 years for the United Illuminating Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the Philippines. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Derby, a member of the Catholic Men's Club of the Church, the Derby High School Sparrows, and a former member of the VFW. He is survived by his cherished family, a sister, Marion Dempsey Leonard with whom he resided; a brother, Charles P. and wife Vivian Dempsey of Derby; a niece, Mrs. John W. (Beverly) Moran of Derby, and niece-in-law Elaine Karanski Leonard of East Haddam; several great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a brother, John Thomas Dempsey Jr.; brother and sister-in-law Louis F. and Loretta Dempsey; and a nephew, John Dempsey Leonard.
Funeral will leave the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby, Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Derby. Burial in Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery. Ethel G. Espetitee
Ethel G. Espetitee, 79, the widow of Joseph C. Espetitee and a long-time resident of Rowan Street, Danbury, died Thursday at Mediplex of Danbury.
Mrs. Espetitee was born in Wingdale, N.Y., Sept. 7, 1919, and had worked as a caretaker at Harlem Valley State Hospital for many years.
Her survivors include two sons, Raymond L. Espetitee of New Fairfield and Joseph A. Espetitee of Oregon; a daughter, Barbara L. Schrack of New Fairfield; ten grandchildren, Carol Valez, Robert Kovarcik, Melissa, Wendall, Cynthia, and Sheldon Schrack, Teresa, Raymond Jr., Timothy and Carol Espetitee; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main St., Danbury, on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Douglas Schrack, Associate Minister of the Victory Christian Center, officiating.
Friends will be received at The Homestead on Monday after 10 a.m.
Rose Yanak
Rose (Sassetti) Yanak, 83, of Albers Road, Danbury, wife of the late John J. Yanak, died May 23, 1999, at Danbury Hospital.
Mrs. Yanak was born in Ridgefield, CT, Jan. 12, 1916, a daughter of the late Pasquelli and Regina (Vandaesen) Sassetti. Mrs. Yanak was employed by Amphenol Corp. She retired at the age of 65 after numerous years of service.
Mrs. Yanak enjoyed spending her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and William Wichman of Danbury; a brother, Peter Sassetti of Danbury; four grandchildren, Cynthia Lucas, Jonathan Wichman, Susan Marie Wichman and Samantha Conrad; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Edward Corona
Edward Corona, 73, of 16 Birch Drive, Bethel, formerly of Danbury, husband of Patricia (Henry) Corona, died on Saturday evening at the Bethel Healthcare Center, Bethel.
Mr. Corona was born in Danbury, August 14, 1925, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Esposito) Corona.
He attended local schools and was a US Army veteran of World War II and of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Corona was a retired foreman for the former Dimyan's Wholesale, which later became Dandy Distributors of Danbury.
He attended St. Joseph's Church of Danbury.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two step-children, Theresa Tate and John Tate, both of Bethel; a sister, Gilda Nazzaro of Danbury and a brother, Joseph Corona of Danbury, his beloved grandson, Nicholas Tate; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph's Church, Danbury, on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

John A. "Jack" Stavola
John A. "Jack" Stavola of New Milford, formerly of Danbury, age 64, husband of Patricia (Hackett) Stavola, died at Danbury Hospital Friday.
Mr. Stavola was born in Danbury August 24, a son of the late Charles and Mary Ann (Novella) Stavola. He was reared and educated in Danbury, where he lived until moving to New Milford a year and a half ago. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Stavola worked for many years as a crane operator for the M.J. Stavola Company and then went to work for the Gilbert and Bennett Company in Georgetown, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and a daughter, Charles J. Stavola and Mary E. Morgan, both of New Milford; a sister, Rose Cozza of Danbury; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Nicole Morgan of New Milford.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Kevin Joseph Dul
Kevin Joseph Dul, 40, of 96 West St., Bristol, husband of Kathleen Smith Dul, died Thursday at Bristol Hospital. Mr. Dul was born in New Britain, June 21, 1958, a son of the late Chester and Mae Washburn Dul. He had lived in New Milford since 1990, moving to Bristol in 1998. He was last employed by MDF Systems of Bristol. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Joseph K. Dul and James R. Dul, both of Bristol; 2 daughters, Casandra Dul of Rock Hill, S.C., and Erin Mae Dul of Bristol; a brother, Alan Dul of Meriden. Services were conducted at the Bible Baptist Church, New Milford. Interment was at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.
