Bertha Elizabeth Hudson, 78

MILLSBORO - Bertha Elizabeth Hudson of Millsboro died as a result of an automobile accident near Georgetown, Tuesday March 31, 1998, in the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. She was 78.

Mrs. Hudson was born in Dagsboro, the daughter of the late Raymond and Bernice Dukes Bunting.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Carlton Hudson in 1990, and a daughter, Kathy E. Phillips in 1997.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn L. Hudson of Millsboro, and Arlene F. Hudson of Gumboro; three brothers, Frank Bunting of Dagsboro, Alvin Bunting of Bridgeton, N.J., and Raymond Bunting of Georgetown; six sisters, Ruth Townsend of Georgetown, Christine Layton of Dagsboro, Ellen Thieleman of Millsboro, Alice Cosden of Dover, Hilda Lecates of Georgetown, and Dorothy Hitchens of Dagsboro; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington Street, Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Rev. Robert Hudson will officiate.

Burial will be in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial Cemetery, Dagsboro.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

Charles Linburg Adams, 70

GEORGETOWN - Charles Linburg Adams of Stokley Center, Georgetown, formerly of Bridgeville, died of heart failure Wednesday April 1, 1998, in the Beebe Medical Center. He was 70.

Mr. Adams worked as a laborer at local poultry farms several years ago.

He is survived by one brother, George W.N. Adams of Greenwood; one aunt, Bea Adams of Bridgeville; and several nephews and nieces.

Service will be at 10 a.m. at graveside.

Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

James W. Freeborn, 89

SEAFORD - James W. Freeborn of Seaford died Tuesday March 31, 1998, in the Methodist Manor House in Seaford. He was 89.

Mr. Freeborn was born in 1908, in Philadelphia, son of the late John Freeborn and Elizabeth Vincent.

He was a graduate of West Philadelphia High School in 1925; earned a bachelor of science degree at Temple University in 1935; and master's degree in Temple University in 1948.

Mr. Freeborn was a teacher in Philadelphia Schools from 1927-1964. He was also employed with the Seaford School District and retired in 1974.

He was a World War II Veteran in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Freeborn was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Seaford; Olivet-Oriental Lodge 385 F.&A.M., Philadelphia, and Hebron Lodge 14 I.O.O.F., Seaford.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Gray Freeborn of Seaford; a son, Robert of Seaford, and a daughter, Faith Freeborn of Georgetown.

Service and burial will be private.

Albert K. Daniels Sr., 72

TOWNSEND - Albert K. Daniels of Townsend died Thursday April 1, 1998, in the Christiana Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was 72.

Mr. Daniels retired from Smith & Douglas Fertilizer Co. in Clayton.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth; four sons, Albert K. Jr. of Townsend, John of Dover, Nick of Clayton, and Jeff of Crumpton, Md.; five daughters, May Holleger of Felton, Rebecca Ross of Georgetown, Sally E. Missimer of Elkton, Md., Ida Simmons of Clayton, and Margie Meekins of Chestertown, Md.; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Sharon Hills Cemetery, West Dover.

Ross Barteau, 88

CAMDEN - Ross Barteau of Camden died Thursday April 2, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. He was 88.

Mr. Barteau was a carpenter for over 50 years with Simpson Lumber Co. in Camden.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the Navy SeaBee's.

Mr. Barteau was a 70-year member of the Camden-Wyoming Volunteer Fire Company, joining in 1928; a past president of the fire company and third assistant chief; he was also Fireman of the Year in 1980; he received a ring from the Camden-Wyoming Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for 62 years of service; was the oldest fire policeman in the state of Delaware; a charter member of Kent County Fire Police Association; a life member of Delaware State Fire Police; held the office of Fire Police from 1961 to present; a life time member of the Walter L. Fox Post 2 in Dover; member of the Order of Odd Fellows of Camden; a member of the Fruitland Grange in Camden, and a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Camden and served on the Board of Trustees.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Willey in 1989.

He is survived by a son, Pat Dyer of Dover; a brother, George Barteau of Perth Amboy, N.J., and five grandchildren.

Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Contributions be made to the Camden-Wyoming Fire Company, Camden, DE 19934.

Oliver Edward Hill, 83

LAUREL - Oliver Edward Hill of Laurel died of complications from lung surgery Thursday, April 2, 1998. He was 83.

Mr. Hill was born in Laurel, the son of the late Samuel Harrison and Carrie Elizabeth McGee Hill.

He worked for Community Credit Finance Co., Laurel, and Pacific Finance Co. and American Finance Co., Seaford, for 40 years, retiring in 1977. He was elected Sussex County comptroller and served from 1964-1968, and was elected to Sussex County Council and served from 1972-1988, at which time he retired.

Mr. Hill was a member of St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, Laurel. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of Hope Lodge 4, AF & AM, Laurel; Kent & Sussex Scottish Rite Club; Lower Delaware Shield and Square Club; Nur Temple, AAONMS, Wilmington; and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He also was a member of the Water Transport Committee, Salisbury, Md.; Delaware Police Chiefs' Foundation Inc.; Delaware Council on Estate Appraisers, Dover; Western Sussex County Democrat Club; Laurel Lions Club; and the Laurel Historical Society, the Laurel Chamber of Commerce and the Laurel Senior Center; and was a former member of Delmarva Advisory Committee from 1972-1988.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Prettyman Hill; two sisters, Helena M. Messick of Oxford, Pa., and Marie Jane Hastings of Colonial Heights, Va.; and several nephews and nieces.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front & King Streets, Seaford.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Conley's Chapel in Angola.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Laurel Fire Company, Box 410, Laurel, DE 19956, or to St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, Box 293, Laurel, DE 19956.

Alvin E. Hickman, 69

DAGSBORO - Alvin E. Hickman of Dagsboro died of heart failure Thursday, April 2, 1998, in his home. He was 69.

Mr. Hickman was born in Dagsboro, son of the late Everett Hickman and Alma Calhoun Hickman.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Hickman was a self-employed farmer.

He was a lifetime member of Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234 at Quillens Point in Ocean View.

He is survived by a son, Brice H. Hickman; a daughter, Nancy H. Wheatley; a sister, Jean M. Turner; two brothers, Robert L. Hickman and Gerald B. Hickman, all of Dagsboro; and five grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday at St. George's Cemetery in Clarksville.

Thomas L. 'Bud' Cornell, 70

DOVER - Thomas L. 'Bud' Cornell of Dover died Thursday April 2, 1998, in Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 70.

Mr. Cornell was born in 1927, in Dorchester, Mass.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific aboard the battleship U.S.S. North Carolina.

Mr. Cornell retired in 1986 from General Foods Corporation after serving 32 years of dedicated work as a millwright. He also worked at Fore River Ship Yard in Quincy, Mass., before starting his career at Walter Baker's Chocolate Mills in Dorchester, Mass.

He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 3238 in Camden.

His love of fishing brought many together to share great stories of the 'big ones' that got away.

He was respected and well-liked by all who were touched by his peaceful nature, and the memories will go on forever.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Eileen of Dover; four sons, Thomas, and his wife, Theresa, of Harrington, Robert, and his wife, Diane, of Yardville, N.J., Daniel, and his wife, Kathy, of Dover, and Richard, also of Dover. He also is survived by a brother, Francis Corness of Waukegan, Ill.; a sister, Margaret Janette of Uxbridge, Mass., and a brother, Donald of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.six grandchildren, whom 'Bud' cherished, Michael Cornell of Annapolis, Md., Sandra Foote of Laurel, Md., Daniel Cornell of Cape Charles, Va., Ricky Cornell of Harrington, and Christopher and Natalie Cornell of Yardville. Bud also was blessed with one great-great-granddaughter, Rachael Foote of Laurel, Md.

Friends may call Monday between 2 and 4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus Street, Dover. Funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday at Delaware Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Bear. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Delaware Hospice at 911 Lotus Plaza, Dover, DE 19901, or to the American Heart Association.

Albert K. Daniels Sr., 72

TOWNSEND - Albert K. Daniels of Townsend died Wednesday April 1, 1998, in the Christiana Hospital, apparently of a heart attack. He was 72.

Marion E. Wiley, 75

SEAFORD - Marion E. Wiley of Seaford died of sudden heart failure Thursday, April 2, 1998, in his home. He was 75.

Mr. Wiley was born in Laurel, son of the late Everett E. Wiley and Louise C. Wiley.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Mr. Wiley worked for Diamond State Telephone Co. and retired in 1982. He worked at numerous locations, retiring from the Millsboro office. He was a switchman with 39 years of service.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America club; American Legion Post 6, Seaford; and the Laurel Alumni Association, Laurel, and he was active in the National Audubon Society.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy M. Wiley of Seaford; two sons, Randall E. Wiley of Clifton, Va., and Emory L. Wiley of Millsboro; three daughters, Constance L. Wiley of Bethany Beach, Kathryn W. O'Bier of Ocean View, and Karla M. Wiley of Churchton, Md.; one brother, Eugene M. Wiley of Longboat Key, Fla.; eight beloved grandchildren; six beloved great-grandchildren, and one beloved nephew.

Service will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Short Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

The Rev. Robert O'Kelly Wallace will officiate.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Christ United Methodist Church, c/o Leatrice Hearn, 108 Broadcreek Road, Laurel, DE 19956.
