Joseph 'Joe' E. Harris, 72

DOVER - Joseph 'Joe' E. Harris of Dover, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in Christiana Hospital. He was 72.

Mr. Harris was born on Dec. 18, 1926, in Dover, the son of the late Elizabeth Harris Cale and Alexander Harris.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years, receiving an honorable discharge.

He obtained his education from Booker T. Washington School and Delaware State College.

Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a brother, William Harris, and a sister, Mildred Saddler.

He is survived by three sons, Joseph Griffin, Maurice Griffin and Craig Griffen, all of Dover; a daughter, Joann Griffin of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Harris of Dover; six sisters, Eva Bostic of Dover, Anna Evans of Smyrna, Helen Gibson of Dover, Dorothy Cale of Germany, Frances Lewis of Dover and Alberta Scott of Woodside; two bother-in-law, Lester Scott Woodside and David Lewis of Dover; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Union Missionary Baptist Church, Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be Wednesday in the Veterans Cemetery, Bear.

Patrick Joseph Brett, 42

LAUREL - Patrick Joseph Brett of Laurel, died from injuries sustained in a car accident Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 42.

Mr. Brett was born in Howard Beach Long Island, New York, the son of the late Thomas Cornelius Brett.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

He is survived by his mother, Joan McGowan Fay of Laurel; a son, Ian Thomas Brett of Salisbury; a sister, Maureen J. Brett of Staten Island, N.Y., and a cherished friend, Lisa Wood, of New Windsor, New York.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church, Stein Hwy, Seaford. The Rev. Patrick Gaffney will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Horace Noble Henry, 74

GOLDSBORO, Md. - Horace Noble Henry of Goldsboro, died of natural causes Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Corsica Hill Nursing Home, Centreville. He was 74.

Mr. Henry was born on March 26, 1924 in Goldsboro, Md., the son of the late Rev. Noble Nathaniel Henry and Bessie Morris Henry.

He was educated in the Caroline County schools.

He was a farm worker and accomplished carpenter.

Mr. Henry was a member of New Union United Methodist Church prior to joining the Community Baptist Church, Barclay.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepmother, Rosie J. Henry.

He is survived by two sons, Paul Geeter of Ridgely, Md., and Larry Brooks of Wilmington, Del.; two daughters, Joyce Bond and Gladys Savanna, both of Wilmington; a stepdaughter, Bernice Dobson of Ridgely; two sisters, Minnie E. Hutchins of Goldsboro and Zelva V. Dryer of Wilmington; a brother, Elder William Henry of Chester, Pa.; several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Community Baptist Church, 1422 Barclay Road, Barclay, Md., where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in New Union Church Cemetery, Goldsboro.

Vera L. DeHaven Hunter, 92

EARLSVILLE, Md. - Vera L. DeHaven Hunter of Earlsville, died of heart failure Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Schuyler House, Church Hill. She was 92.

Mrs. Hunter was born in Ridley, Pa, the daughter of the late James B. and Clara L. DeHaven.

She married John Clark Hunter,they established residence in Earleville, Md., where they worked the Church Farm on Glebe Road, Cecilton until 1958, when they built their own home a mile away. They did everything together.

Mrs. Hunter was family orientated and loved to do things around her home. She was very talented with handicrafts and particularly with her sewing, knitting and crocheting; many of her works have been shared by friends and family. She liked to work in her yard, preparing her garden and growing flowers in the summer.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988.

She is survived by a niece who has seen to her needs for the past several years, Mrs. Evelyn Grehawick of Centreville, Md. and several other nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Cemetery, Earlville, Maryland. The Rev. William Downing will officiate.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Earleville, MD 21919.

Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton.

Dean L. Short, 44

REHOBOTH BEACH - Dean L. Short of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in his home. He was 44.

Mr. Short was born in Salisbury, Md., the son of the late Lynden Short and Marian McCabe Short.

He was a self-employed electrician in the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach areas.

Mr. Short was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Bledsoe.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine L. Reynolds of Lewes; a brother, Perry Short of Ohio and two grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday,at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Service, Del. 24 and Long Neck Road. The Rev. Douglas Culton will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 N. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Thomas Bolton Harrison, 82

ROCK HALL, Md. - Thomas Bolton Harrison of Rock Hall died of respiratory failure Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in his home. He was 82.

Mr Harrison was born in Alabama, the son of the late Thomas B. and Ethel Beale Harrison.

He was a young child when his family moved to Lancaster, Pa.; during summer months making trips to Betterton, Md.

He attended college at William and Mary in Virginia and Temple University in Philadelphia.

Mr.Harrison worked for a time as a pharmaceutical salesman and later went to work for the Philadelphia Bulletin as a proofreader. He retired in 1980 moving with his wife to Rock Hall.

He was a quiet, family orientated man who in his spare time enjoyed fishing and crabbing. He had a deep seated interest in history and enjoyed reading.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Edna Harrison of Rock Hall; two stepdaughters, Susan Mench of Rock Hall and Karen Greenhood of Marietta, Ga.; a stepson, Gordon Richards of Sand Point, Id.; a daughter, Sandra Garret of Lands down, Pa.; a half-brother, Phillip Harrison of San Francisco, Calf. and seven grandchildren.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth Baker Covey, 92

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Elizabeth Baker Covey of Columbus, formally of Chestertown, Md., died of heart failure, Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in friendship Village, Columbus, where she has lived for the last 11 years. She was 92.

Ms. Covey a native of Chestertown, was the daughter of the late Mr. A. Howard Covey and Mamie Trew-Baker.

She attended public schools and graduated magna cum laude from Washington College in Chestertown. She also earned a master's degree in mathematics from Columbus University.

She taught mathematics at Abbot Academy, Andover, Ma., National Cathedral School in Washington D.C., Kent Place School in Summit, N.J., Wesley Junior College, Dover, Del., Washington College and Loyola College , Baltimore, Md. She was also an accomplished pianist and gave many recitals in the institutions where she taught.

Miss Covey wrote an article, 'The Outgrowth of a Philosophical Approach to the Teaching of Mathematics.' It was published in the Mathematics Teacher's Journal in 1949.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Covey.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Covey Griffith of Friendship Village of Columbus; a niece, Mary Beth Berggren of Galena, Ohio and six great nieces and nephews.

Service and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to either First Methodist Church or to the Washington College, both In Chestertown, Md.

Joseph N. Griffith, 60

GREENWOOD - Joseph N. Griffith of Greenwood died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 60.

Mr Griffith was a veteran of the United States Army.

He worked for Wilson Coach Inc. of Dover, retiring in 1989. He was general manager of the Super Soda Center in Milford for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 6 years, Nancy Jesse Griffith; two daughters, Jaqueline Ann Wolfe of Greenwood and Rachael Griffith of Harrington; three sons, Joshua E. Griffith of Harrington, Joseph W. Griffith and Jeffrey L. Griffith, both of Milford; a sister, Nancy Lewis of Frankford and six grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.

William E. Worthman, 84

DOVER - William E. Worthman of Dover died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in his home. He was 84.

Mr. Worthman was born on June 7, 1914 in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late Louis C. and Susan Worthman.

He retired from the Acme Pad Company in Baltimore, where he had worked as an accountant.

Mr. Worthman enjoyed fishing and baseball, a loyal fan to the Baltimore Orioles.

He was a member of the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge, a member of the Modern Maturity Center and AARP.

Mr. Worthman was preceded in death by his wife, Helen A. Worthman.

He is survived by three daughters, Helen Hacker of Dover, Nancy Brady of Lutherville, Md., and Patricia Fitzkee of York, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Service and burial will be held at a later date, at the convenience of the family.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contribution be made to Delaware Hospice, Central Division, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901

Grace Marie Christensen, 97

MILFORD - Grace Marie Christensen of Milford died of cancer, Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Milford Medical Center. She was 97.

Mrs. Christensen was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. Christensen, in 1952.

She is survived by a son, William Christensen of Lincoln; a daughter, Norma Jean Tobey of Wyoming; a brother, Paul Tankersley of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Irene Lucas of Baltimore and Alma Wilson of Lewes; a grandson, William A. Christensen of Millsboro; two granddaughters, Lea Christensen of Atlanta, Ga., and Bonnie Spencer of Smyrna; a step-grandson, Rennie Hunt of Greenwood; a step-granddaughter, Liette Thomas of Greenwood and three great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today in Odd Fellows Cemetery, North Walnut Street, Milford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 9 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
