Evelyn F. McDowell, 70

BRIDGEVILLE - Evelyn F. McDowell of Bridgeville died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in Bayhealth Medical Center, Milford. She was 70.

Mrs. McDowell was born Jan. 10, 1928, daughter of the late J. Frank and Florence Marvil Willoughby.

She graduated from Bridgeville Consolidated School in 1946.

She owned and operated McDowell's Market in Bridgeville for 44 years with her husband, retiring Dec. 31, 1992.

Mrs. McDowell enjoyed family genealogy and making scrapbooks.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Marion C. 'Monk' McDowell; a daughter, Judy M. Derrickson, and son-in-law, Dennis B. Derrickson, of Bridgeville; two sisters, Anna R. McDowell of Greenwood and Virmadel McAllister of Laurel; two brothers, William E. Willoughby of Greenwood and Ormond L. Willoughby of Bridgeville; an aunt, Hazel Douglas of Chester, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Hardesty Funeral Home, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Horatio R. 'Ray' Proctor Jr., 79

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Horatio R. 'Ray' Proctor Jr. of Chestertown died of heart failure Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. He was 79.

Mr. Proctor was born in Crownsville, Md., the son of the late Horatio R. and Mary Dryden (Worthington) Proctor.

He attended the Stroyer Business School for one year.

Mr. Proctor then went to work for the Franklin Balmar Manufacturing Co., remaining there for 16 years. After leaving Franklin Balmar, he went to work for Johns Hopkins University, where he remained, working as the grants officer in the Department of Arts and Science, until he retired in 1983 after 27 years of service.

He married Pollyanne in 1956, and together, they raised a son. After his retirement, they moved to Chestertown.

Mr. Proctor was a past member of the St. John's Huntington Church in Baltimore, where he was a member of its vestry, its treasurer and a Sunday school teacher. After moving to Chestertown, he became an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Chestertown Lions Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, in 1996.

He is survived by a son, James R. Proctor of Chestertown; a brother, Richard D.J. Proctor of Milton, Fla.; a sister, Mary Dryden Sollers of Baltimore; two grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Chestertown.

Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, PO Box 875, Chestertown.

Aleine H.J. Short, 90

MILLSBORO - Aleine H.J. Short of Millsboro died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in her home. She was 90.

Mrs. Short worked for Georgetown Trust Co., which became a branch of Wilmington Trust Co., in Georgetown for a total of 43 years before retiring as the branch's treasurer.

She was a member of the Millsboro Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd T. Short, in 1978.

She is survived by three nephews and three nieces who looked after her, James N. Smith of Frankford, Richard I. Smith of Newark, Donald C. Smith of Georgetown, Nancy Mattson of Wilmington, Carol Pettyjohn of Milton and Kathleen Bigony of York, Pa.; and several other nephews and nieces.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Indian River Senior Center Inc., 322 Mitchell St., Millsboro, DE 19966.

Elva M. Wyatt, 88

MILFORD - Elva M. Wyatt of Milford died of heart failure Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Milford. She was 88.

Mrs. Wyatt worked in many of the shops in Milford, and retired from Dot's Card and Gift Shop in 1967.

She attended the First Presbyterian Church, Milford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles 'Chic' Wyatt, in 1987; and a son, Charles Major Wyatt, in 1996.

She is survived by a son, Ronnie R. Wyatt of Newark; a sister, Hazel M. Sczubelek of Newark; three grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Milford, P.O. Box 172, Milford, DE 19963.

Alma C. Smith, 83

HARRINGTON - Alma C. Smith of Harrington died of respiratory failure Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in her home. She was 83.

Mrs. Smith and her husband had owned and operated Burton's Sport Shop in Harrington for 46 years. She retired in 1986.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its choir; a member and poppy chairwoman of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7; a member of the Harrington Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary; and a member of the Milford AARP chapter and the Harrington Senior Center.

Mrs. Smith was a volunteer in the Milford Memorial Hospital pharmacy, where she was honored for 3500 hours of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burton T. Smith, in 1976; and a son, Randall T. Smith, in 1993.

She is survived by a sister, Mabel Thompson; four grandsons, Randee B. Smith, Glenn B. Smith and Forrest P. Smith, all of Harrington, and Eric C. Smith of El Paso, Texas; four great-grandson; and three great-granddaughters.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Commerce Street, Harrington, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Trinity U.M. Church, Harrington, DE 19952; or to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Maggie Sarah Baker, 89

GUMBORO - Maggie Sarah Baker of Gumboro died of heart failure Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Chancellor Care Center, Delmar. She was 89.

Mrs. Baker was born in Gumboro, the daughter of the late Noah J. and Della M. Hadder Collins.

She was a member of Salisbury Baptist Church, Salisbury, Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Roy Baker, in 1979; and a sister, Estella Mae Adkins, Dec. 2, 1998.

She is survived by a daughter, Agnes M. Taylor of Parsonsburg, Md.; a brother, Granville Collins of Gumboro; three sisters, Ola Moore of Laurel, Edith Shockley of Salisbury and Ruth Larmore of Parsonsburg, Md.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, with the Rev. James Langrall officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Willards, Md.

Velma Olivia Barham, 84

HURLOCK, Md. - Velma Olivia Barham of Hurlock died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge. She was 84.

Mrs. Barham was born April 27, 1914, in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late James W. Jones and Sadie Pinder Jones.

She attended the public schools of Dorchester County in Hurlock.

Mrs. Jones was an employee of the Acme Market of Hurlock, retiring at age 65.

She was a very modest lady and a devoted mother and wife.

Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of the Methodist Church and a supporter of it throughout her life. One of her favorite hymns was 'When Jesus Comes Into My Life.' Some of her most rewarding experiences were serving on the usher board and being a dedicated member of the Communion team.

The traditional family gathering and feasting around Labor Day was another highlight in her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Barham, also from Hurlock.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. Carl S. and Delores W. Barham of Columbia and James E. Barham of Williamsburg and Gladys Barham; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hurlock United Methodist Church, Hurlock, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Federal Hill Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Bruce Ballard, 43

GIRDLETREE, Md. - Bruce Ballard of Girdletree died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. He was 43.

Mr. Ballard was born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Salisbury, the son of Sarah Ames of Snow Hill and Rudolph Taylor of Girdletree.

He was employed at Perdue Farms.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Dorothy Taylor, and a grandfather, George Taylor, who raised him.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three daughters, LaShayle Fletcher of Pocomoke City, Chelsea Ballard of Salisbury and Shanika Roy of Princess Anne; a son, Darius Dennis of Princess Anne; four sisters, Glenda Smith of Cambridge and Brenda Ames, Denise Ames and Brenda Holden, all of Snow Hill; four brothers, Maurice Ames and Anthony Sterlings of Snow Hill, Gregory Ames of Washington, D.C., and Rudolph Dennis of New York; a devoted friend, Elvira White of Pocomoke City; maternal grandparents, Artie and Elizabeth Ballard of Snow Hill; and several uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.

Service will be noon Saturday at the Cool Spring United Methodist Church, Girdletree. The Rev. Thomas Fitchett will officiate.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, and one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Harry R. 'Dutch' Exner, 66

MILLSBORO - Harry R. 'Dutch' Exner of Millsboro died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Burlington County Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly, N.J. He was 66.

Mr. Exner was born in Trenton, N.J., and resided in the Hamilton Township, N.J., area for most of his life before moving to Millsboro five years ago.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Exner was employed as an operations manager for Bell Atlantic and its predecessor, the Bell Telephone System of AT&T, for 32 years. Most recently, he was employed with Siemens Tel-Plus as an operations manager, and retired after 10 years of service.

He was a former member of the Trenton Elks, and had been an elder at the Brick Presbyterian Church of Bricktown, N.J.

At the time of his death, Mr. Exner was a member and the Sunday school superintendent and treasurer of the East Gate Presbyterian Church, Long Neck.

He was a local artist, and placed in several contests for his work with watercolor.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta K. Exner; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David Exner of Bricktown and Glenn and Jennifer E. Hopwood of Allentown, N.J.; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Diana and Robert Ewashko of Mount Holly, Mary Jane Creely of Riverside, N.J., Tina and Mike Fossati of Hamilton, N.J., and Jackie Kuck of Largo, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Judy Exner of Hamilton Township; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Shirley Kiss of Mount Holly, Patricia and George Malick of Columbia, Md., Phyllis Braun of Ewing Township, N.J., and Marion and Jamie Heilman of Ocean City, N.J.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at East Gate Presbyterian Church, Long Neck, with the Rev. Craig Lins, pastor, officiating.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the East Gate Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Long Neck, Millsboro, DE 19966.

Albirta Flamer, 95

MAGNOLIA - Albirta Flamer of Magnolia died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 95.

Mrs. Flamer was born June 2, 1903, in Maryland, the daughter of the late Albert and Gracie Flamer. She was the youngest daughter of 10 children (four girls and six boys).

She received her education in the public school system of Maryland.

Mrs. Flamer loved to cook and enjoyed domestic-type work.

She loved going to church and, whenever her health would allow, she was always in a hurry to go to her home church, Holy Tabernacle Church of Love.

Mrs. Flamer was a very loving, caring and sharing person. She would give you her last dollar if you needed it. She loved to read the Bible and listen to music.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Flamer.

She is survived by a daughter, Grace Chase of Dover; two sons, Leonard Flamer of Harrington and James Flamer of Houston; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Service will be noon Saturday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 West Division St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Old Hickory Cemetery, Slaughter Neck.
