Helen M. Monaghan, 81

MILFORD - Helen M. Monaghan of Milford, formerly of Clearwater, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Bayhealth/Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 81.

Mrs. Monaghan was born on June 3, 1917, in Chester, Pa., the daughter of the late Frank and Clara Osbourne Brennan.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Smith, in 1950; and her second husband, Joseph P. Monaghan, in 1990.

She is survived by a son, Thomas J. Smith of Dover, and his fiancee, Harleane Wells, of Milford, who took care of her; two grandchildren, Thomas Monaghan of Odenton and Sheri Conrad of Landenberg, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Conrad, Lucas Conrad, Samuel J. Conrad, Kyle Monaghan and Bethany Monaghan; a sister-in-law, Mildred Brennan of Boothwyn, Pa.; two nieces, Loretta Kufta of Boca Raton, Fla., and Kelli Griffis of Clearwater; and a nephew, Maurice Bufano of Aston, Pa.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be private.

Katherine Mary Reese Nash, 86

DENTON, Md. - Katherine Mary Reese Nash of Denton died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. She was 86.

Mrs. Nash was born on Aug. 14, 1912, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Andrew and Louise Marie Lettau Reese.

She attended Western High School, Baltimore.

She worked at Montgomery Ward until Dec. 31, 1931, when she married Arthur Orville Nash of Chester. During most of her lifetime, she was a homemaker in Chester. She and her husband ran 'Miss Kitty's Dairy Bar' in Wye Mills, and later in Easton, during the '50s and '60s.

Mrs. Nash was a member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary, the Kent Island Heritage Society and Kent Daughters of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Feb. 17, 1979; and a son, Capt. Arthur O. 'Sonny' Nash, March 20, 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, June Kemp of Denton; and three grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, where friends and family may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to one's local fire department.

Robert Odee, 67

LEWES - Robert Odee of Lewes died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Clara Maass Medical Center, Bellville, N.J. He was 67.

Mr. Odee was born July 14, 1931, in Johnstown, Pa., the son of the late Josep Odee and Petronella Abler.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Odee had owned his own company that installed taxicab meters in New York City. After moving to Lewes, he worked as a field representative for Lawns Unlimited for 11 years.

He is survived by his wife, Louise B. Odee of Lewes; a son, Robert John Odee Jr. of Mullica Township, N.J.; a daughter, Tina Louise Odee of Lewes; and two grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Savannah Road, Lewes, with the Rev. Philip Sheekey officiating.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Atkins-Lodge Chapel of Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes.

Burial will be in Bethel Methodist Cemetery following the service.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Intensive Care Unit, Clara Maass Medical Center, 1 Franklin Ave., Bellville, NJ 07109.

Owen Leroy Walbert, 73

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Owen Leroy Walbert of Chestertown died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 73.

Mr. Walbert was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Still Pond, the son of the late Wilbur W. Walbert and Beatrice Lehman Walbert.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal and the Asia-Pacific Theater Ribbon.

On March 12, 1949, Mr. Walbert married Jean V. Whitlock. They lived in Betterton.

Mr. Walbert was a lifetime farmer. He worked as farm manager at Cacaway Farm for more than 30 years. He retired in 1996.

He was a member of the Kent County Farm Bureau and the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post. He also was a past member of the Chestertown Elks Lodge 2474. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and crabbing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Bigelow, July 14, 1998.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Owen E. Walbert of Sterling, Va.; a brother, Joe Walbert of Mississippi; two sisters, Louise Thomas of Baltimore and Virginia Johnson of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Rock Hall.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical and Office Center, 1601 Kirkwood Ave., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Martha Stalter Tignor, 92

DOVER - Martha Stalter Tignor of Dover died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in her home. She was 92.

Mrs. Tignor was born Jan. 4, 1906, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, the daughter of the late Franklin and Bertha Stalter.

She graduated from the College of Wooster and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She had worked as a Latin teacher at Yeadon High School in Yeadon, Pa., and had been a tour guide for many overseas trips.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Robert M. Tignor, Nov. 19, 1995.

She is survived by three sons, Robert L. Tignor of Princeton, N.J., Richard F. Tignor of Williamsport, Pa., and John P. Tignor of Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Joan Tiernan of Severna Park, Md., and Judy Russo of Glassboro, N.J.; a sister, Regina O'Donnell of Boston; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at the Westminster Village Community Center, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, Central Division, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Mary S. Moran-Crockett, 84

DOVER - Mary S. Moran-Crockett of Luther Towers, Dover, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Capitol Health Care Services, Dover. She was 84.

Ms. Moran-Crockett was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Addis, La., the daughter of the late Ezekiel and Isabella Montgomery.

She had been a foster grandparent.

Ms. Moran-Crockett was a member of Mount Carmel Church of the Living God, Dover.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruby L. Coppadge and Robert Coppadge Jr., both of Dover; a sister, Ruby Williams of Los Angeles; four grandsons, Daryl Coppadge of Voorhees, N.J., Joel Coppadge of Wilmington, Carl Coppadge of Woodbridge, Va., and Paul Coppadge of Coatesville, Pa.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Service will be noon Tuesday at Mount Carmel Church of the Living God, 117 West St., Dover, with Elder Nelson E. Lewis officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Mariann F. Bierbaum, 75

DOVER - Mariann F. Bierbaum of Dover died of pneumonia Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 75.

Mrs. Bierbaum was born in Duchesne, Utah, the daughter of the late William & Mary Wood Foster.

She and her family moved to Dover in 1955, and in 1964, her husband's military career caused them to leave the area. They returned to Dover in 1973.

Mrs. Bierbaum worked as a sales clerk for McCrory's in Dover, retiring in 1991.

She was a dedicated wife and mother. To those who knew and loved her, she was a unique lady who often assigned herself to laughter.

Mrs. Bierbaum had been a member of the Camden Friends Meeting of Camden, a former Red Cross volunteer and an active member of the Modern Maturity Center, where she had participated in the Meals on Wheels program.

She was preceded in death by a son, Carl, in 1992; and a grandson, Blaine Bowhall, in 1983.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Henry Bierbaum Sr. of Dover; six sons, Henry Jr. of Portland, Ore., William of San Diego, Calif., Johnny of Cambridge, Md., Tom of Erie, Pa., Bob of Laurinburg, N.C., and Jim of Wilmington; four daughters, Vicky Bowhall of Dover, Kathy Van Dame of Salt Lake City, and Teresa Bierbaum and Beth Dawson, both of Federal Way, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Service will be 8 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover.

Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial and committal service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her memory to the American Lung Association, 625 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Clarence S. Collins Jr., 81

SMYRNA - Clarence S. Collins Jr. of Smyrna died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Beyhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 81.

Mr. Collins was born in Odessa and was a 1938 graduate of Beacom College in Wilmington.

After graduating from Officers Candidate School, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Collins then served as personnel director of Wilson Cabinet and its successor, Tyler Industries, in Smyrna from 1946-1955. In 1955, he purchased a lumber and hardware business in Clayton from R.W. Slaughter. It was sold in 1967 to the present owners. He then purchased land and property on U.S. 13 in Smyrna and opened Slaughter's Inc., a heating and plumbing supply business. The U.S. 13 location was sold in 1983, and the former Smyrna Theater was purchased, where Slaughter's Inc. is currently located.

He served as a state representative in the Delaware Legislature from 1951-1952 and also as the state treasurer of Delaware from 1953-1954.

Mr. Collins was a past president and member of the Smyrna-Clayton Rotary for 44 years. He achieved 43 years of perfect attendance (2,236 consecutive weekly meetings). In 1997, he received the Paul Harris Fellowship, the highest honor a Rotarian can receive. He was also a member of the board of directors of Clayton Bank and Trust Co. in Clayton for 38 years, the American Legion Post 14 in Smyrna and the Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna. He was active on various projects in the Smyrna community, such as the Chamber of Commerce and other committees which helped bring in new business to the area.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth S. Collins of Smyrna; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence S. 'Butch' Collins III and Terri Collins and David M. Collins and Kathy Collins, all of Smyrna; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara C. Greene and Russell Greene of Smyrna; two sisters, Mabel Othoson of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Elsie Everett of Odessa; seven grandchildren, Gloria Collins and Roberta Collins, both of Dover, Michael Kyer, Meggan Collins and Sharon Collins, all of Smyrna, Michael Pleasanton of Coatesville, Pa., and Adam Greene of Smyrna; and a great-grandchild, Alayne Mary Pleasanton of Coatesville.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Gertrude E. Lord, 91

DOVER - Gertrude E. Lord of Dover died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1998, in her home. She was 91.

Mrs. Lord was born in 1907, in Galestown, Md., the daughter of the late Albany and Laura Ann Eskridge.

She was a homemaker and had taught in the Dover public schools for nine years.

Mrs. Lord had been a longtime member of the board of managers of the Palmer Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred C. Lord Sr., in 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Fred C. Lord Jr. of Dover and Charles W. Lord of Salisbury, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover.

Graveside service will be private.

Gwendoline Pereira, 96

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Gwendoline Pereira of Melbourne died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in Carnegie Gardens Nursing Home. She was 96.

Mrs. Pereira was a sweet, humorous and lovely lady.

She is survived by a son, Edward Pereira of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Polly Nace of Dover, Del., and Dorothy Moore of Indialantic; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State Street, Dover.
