Albert Sylvester 'Bob' Dorsey, 89

CENTREVILLE, Md. - Albert Sylvester 'Bob' Dorsey of Coleman's Corner died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, in Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville. He was 89.

Mr. Dorsey was born in Coleman's Corner, the son of the late Ormar Dorsey and Marian Tiller-Dorsey.

He was educated in Kent County public schools. He worked in construction, and later, he worked as a farmhand.

He was joined in holy matrimony to Olivia Sampson; they had six children. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Allen and Leo; a daughter, Doris; and his wife, Olivia.

He is survived by three daughters, Louise Chambers and Ardella Finley, both of Wilmington, Del., and Marian Wilson of Millington; one daughter-in-law, Azene Dorsey; two sons-in-law, Benjamin Chambers of Wilmington and Perley Wallace of Big Woods; a brother, Wesley Jackson of Coleman; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Service was held Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in New Christian Chapel of Love Church, Big Woods, with the Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements by the Walley Funeral Home, Chestertown.

Danielle Dionne Guerin, 16

LEWES - Danielle Dionne Guerin of Lewes died as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, near Sussex 212. She was 16.

Miss Guerin was born June 6, 1982, in Milford, the daughter of Kerry James Guerin of Eagan, Minn., and Marsha Dionne Guerin of Lewes.

She was a junior at Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes, and was on the 'B' Honor Roll. She participated in cross country, basketball and track and field at the high school, and had served as a counselor at Plantations Tennis Camp last summer.

Miss Guerin attended Conley's Chapel Methodist Church, Angola.

She collected basketball cards and enjoyed listening to music. Sports were her love.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Kris Joseph Guerin, at Muehlenburg College in Allentown, Pa.; a half-sister, Jennifer Ashley Guerin of Eagan; a stepsister, Aimee Nicole Mateyka of Eagan; her paternal grandparents, James Earl Guerin of Media, Pa., and Dorris Elizabeth Harris Guerin of Villas, N.J.; and her maternal grandparents, Joseph Lewis Dionne and Joan Frances Dionne, both of New Canaan, Conn.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Randy Booth officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. today.

Burial will be in All Saints' Cemetery, Angola.

Theodore B. Hitchens, 83

MILLSBORO - Theodore B. Hitchens of Millsboro died of heart failure Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 83.

Mr. Hitchens was born in Millsboro, the son of the late G. Emory Hitchens and Mary Hickman Hitchens.

He was the owner of Hitchens Auto Supply in Millsboro, which he founded in 1938 and operated for 60 years.

Mr. Hitchens was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro, and of the Millsboro Lions Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta T. Hitchens, in 1965.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Blanche Gray Hitchens; two daughters, Bonnie Ward and Ellen Maude Smith, both of Millsboro; and four grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro, with the Rev. Dr. James C. VanDerWall and the Rev. William H. Hudson officiating.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in the Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

Millicent J. Hutchins, 87

DOVER - Millicent J. Hutchins of Dover died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, in the facilities of Capitol Health Care Services, Dover. She was 87.

Mrs. Hutchins was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis H. Hutchins, in 1988; a son, Harold Hutchins, in 1960; and a daughter, Eleanor Lee Sivley, in 1976.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Kelly Pouncey of Cleveland, Texas, and Tracy Sivley of College Station, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Pouncey and Emily Pouncey, both of Cleveland.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at The Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, with the Rev. Wayne Trout officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

D. Irving Obrow, 81

LITTLE SILVER, N.J. - D. Irving Obrow of Little Silver and New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and formerly of Dover, Del., died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998. He was 81.

Mr. Obrow was a native of New York City.

He received his A.B. from the City College of New York at the age of 19, after which he taught mathematics for a year at Bryant High School in Queens. He graduated from Columbia Business School, became a certified public accountant and embarked on what was to become a long and distinguished career in corporate finance.

During World War II, Mr. Obrow served in the War Department Corps of Engineers as part of the Manhattan Project team. Subsequently, he went to International Playtex Corp., Dover, where he became vice president for Finance and Administration and a director. In 1968, he moved back to New York as vice president and chief financial officer of the Glen Alden Corp. when it acquired International Playtex Corp. and several other businesses, including Schenley Industries.

In 1978, he became senior vice president for Finance and a director of Johnston Industries, in association with his longtime friend Paul Johnston. In 1985, he succeeded Mr. Johnston as president, chief executive officer and a director of Johnston Industries, where he remained until retiring in 1991. In addition, he served on the boards of directors for several companies, including Plains Resources and Jupiter Industries. Throughout his career, his depth of understanding and professionalism drew the widespread trust and respect of his colleagues.

Mr. Obrow was a great reader, with a particular interest in history and politics, and in conversation he always revealed a deep and analytic understanding of a wide range of public affairs. He also possessed a deep love of music, particularly classical music.

He cared deeply about the communities in which he lived, serving on the board of Kent General Hospital in Dover, the Delaware Board of Education and the board of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York City.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille; two daughters, Joanne Bailey of New Haven, Conn., and Patti White of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Norman Obrow of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren, Jennie, Peter, Edward, Timothy and Trevor.

Memorial service will be Wednesday in New Jersey; for details, please contact the family.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, 490 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10027.

Louise Floyd Adams, 76

SUDLERSVILLE, Md. - Louise Floyd Adams of Sudlersville died of heart failure Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. She was 76.

Mrs. Adams was born in Sutton, W. Va., the daughter of the late Craven and Dorothy Floyd.

She began her teaching career in 1941 in the West Virginia public school system, and taught there until 1955. After moving to Sudlersville, she began teaching in 1956 and continued her career until 1987, when she retired with 31 years' service in the Queen Anne's County public school system, most recently as a reading specialist.

Unselfish with her time and loving teaching, Mrs. Adams found herself back in the classroom substitute-teaching from 1988 until 1995. She enjoyed working with students throughout her career as an educator.

She also enjoyed reading and traveling after her retirement, and spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pearson Burbe Adams, in 1967; a brother, Clarence 'Tag' Floyd; and a sister, Margaret Jean Jackson.

She is survived by a son, Pearson B. Adams III of Sudlersville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sara E. Fox of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Barbara F. Taylor and Don Taylor of Roanoke, Va.; another brother-in-law, Theodore Jackson, husband of the late Margaret Jean, of Richmond, Va.; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Service will be 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where family and friends may call one and one-half hours prior to the service. A second service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Green and Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Sutton cemetery, Sutton.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Nancy Cook, 124 Bryce Road, Queenstown, MD 21658; or to the Sudlersville Memorial Library Fund, P.O. Box 112, Sudlersville, MD 21668.

Mattie Olivia Brown, 94

ROCK HALL, Md. - Mattie Olivia Brown of Rock Hall died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, in Wesleyan Health Care Center, Denton. She was 94.

Mrs. Brown was born in Marion Station, near Crisfield, where she attended public schools. After moving to Rock Hall, she married the late John Edward Brown.

She was employed by Rock Hall Cannery and by Rock Hall Oyster House.

Mrs. Brown was a member of Aaron United Methodist Church in Rock Hall.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, George E. Brown and Gloria Brown of Philadelphia and Irvin Brown and Ivy Brown of Baltimore; three daughters, Mildred Wesley of San Diego, Calif., Dorothy Shuron of Baltimore and Elizabeth Jackson of Rock Hall; 25 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. today in Aaron U.M. Church, Rock Hall, with the Rev. Carol S. Hopkins officiating.

Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Aaron U.M. Church Cemetery.

Robert Lee 'Bobby' Griffith, 70

SEAFORD - Robert Lee 'Bobby' Griffith of Seaford died of heart failure Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in his home. He was 70.

Mr. Griffith was born April 18, 1928, in Federalsburg, Md., the son of the late Arnold and Myra Bramble Griffith.

After completing his education, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country in Korea.

Upon his return, Mr. Griffith joined E.I. DuPont in Seaford, where he worked as a sheet-metal worker for more than 30 years, and later worked for Fluor Daniels Co. for six years prior to his retirement in 1993.

He attended Wesley United Methodist Church, Federalsburg, and was a member of Federalsburg VFW Post 5246 and of Moose Lodge 1728 of Seaford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gina Griffith, Aug. 25, 1978; and a brother, Ralph Griffith, Nov. 23, 1992.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Emma Peterson Griffith; a son, Michael R. Griffith of Seaford; two daughters, Carla Turner, of Seaford, and Gail Wilson of Rhodesdale, Md.; three stepchildren, Marr Douglas Sappington of Morrow, Ga., Holly Peterson of Bakerville, N.C., and Lorra White of Salisbury, Md.; two brothers, Arnold Griffith Jr. of Federalsburg, Md., and Lawrence Griffith of Cambridge, Md.; a sister, Ella Schiff of Federalsburg; nine grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg, with the Rev. Lloyd L. Foard officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Geneva L. Longer, 96

KALONA, Iowa - Geneva L. Longer of Kalona died, after a long illness, Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Pleasantville Home, Kalona. She was 96.

Mrs. Longer was born April 19, 1902, in Boone County, the daughter of Thomas Evans and Telia Johnson Evans.

She graduated from Washington High School, Washington, Iowa.

Mrs. Longer married Charles R. Longer Aug. 30, 1921, in Iowa City.

She was a homemaker, and also had worked at the McLellan Store for many years.

Mrs. Longer had lived in Washington until moving to Kalona three years ago.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Longer enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and playing the piano and organ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; a brother and two sisters.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Daryl and Marge Longer of Washington and Jerry and Olive Longer of Ellsworth, Maine; two daughters and a son-in-law, Charlotte Lins of Dover, Del., and Deborah and William Sample of Abbeville, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Central time Wednesday in the Jones Eden Funeral Home, 116 E. Main St., Washington, with the Rev. Robert Bell officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home at noon today; family visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Central time today.

Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Washington County (Iowa) Humane Society.

Chittle Saylor Sr., 75

VIOLA - Chittle Saylor Sr. of Viola died of heart and lung failure Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in the Maryland Veterans Health Care System, Perry Point, Md. He was 75.

Mr. Saylor was born Nov. 18, 1998, in Kettle Island, Ky., the son of the late Frank and Jane Bailey Saylor.

After attending public school, he became a coal miner in Kentucky until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in Germany and France in the 2nd Armored Division, known as 'Hell on Wheels,' until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Mr. Saylor married his first wife, the former Verdia Ray Hoskins, in 1944, and they eventually made their home in Stoney Fork, Ky.

In 1955, he moved to Maryland's Eastern Shore, where he worked as a farmer and mechanic, and married his second wife, the former Christine Benbo. They moved to Indiana, and later, in 1987, were divorced. Also in 1987, he retired as a maintenance worker for the city of North Vernon, Ind.

Mr. Saylor later moved back to the Eastern Shore.

He was a member of the Cordova (Md.) Baptist Church, and a past member of the Jolly Circle Horse Club and the First State Coon Hunters Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Glen Saylor.

He is survived by nine sons, Neil Saylor of Queen Anne, Md., Earl Saylor of Wye Mills, Md., Chittle Saylor Jr. of Preston, Md., and David Saylor, Michael Saylor, Daniel Saylor, Chittle Saylor III, Cornelius Saylor and Albert Saylor, all of Cherokee, N.C.; six daughters, Delphia Ann Sherwood of Cordova, Md., Linda Jane Hopkins of Cambridge, Md., Kathy Post of Federalsburg, Md., Dianna Perkins of Viola, Sandra English of Hurlock, Md., and Christina Saylor of Asheville, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, Md., where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Beulah.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Sheila Bateman, William Hill Manor, 501 Dutchman's Lane, Easton, MD 21601; or to the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093.
