Wilbur W. Fox Jr., 80

NEW CASTLE - Wilbur W. Fox Jr. of New Castle died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in his home. He was 80.

Mr. Fox was a machinist by trade and worked at F.F. Slocum Machine Shop in Wilmington for more than 30 years before retiring in 1980.

He was a semi-pro baseball player; a member of the original Bull Hill Boat Yard Gang; and a member of Moose Lodge 1578.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Marie Fox, in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Norma J. Fox of New Castle; four sons, James A. Fox of Hartly, Charles Fox of Townsend, Wilson Fox of Clayton and Randy Hutchison of Newark; four daughters, Mildred Jarman of Felton, Ruth Rose of San Antonio, Texas, and Robin Wilson and Mildred Flanagan, both of New Castle; a brother, John Fox of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Jane Banks of New Castle; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware St., New Castle, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Glebe Cemetery, New Castle.

Mary JoAnn Grant, 54

GOLDSBORO, Md. - Mary JoAnn Grant of Goldsboro died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. She was 54.

Mrs. Grant was born July 27, 1944, in Greensboro, the daughter of Joseph Andrew Faber Sr. and Mildred Virginia Usilton Faber of Chestertown.

She graduated from Kent County High School in 1962. Then, she attended Baltimore Business School to study accounting and Chesapeake College for certification as a nurse's assistant.

Mrs. Grant worked for Business Forms in Chestertown for a number of years. She also worked at Corsica Hills Nursing Home and did private-duty nursing. Additionally, she worked at Mid-Shore Counseling, dealing with family violence, for six years.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Marie Ratliff, in 1996.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Jerry McCarthy of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Tonya L. Carpenter of Goldsboro; two brothers, Joseph Andrew Faber Jr. of Millington, and James E. Usilton of Worton; a sister, Theresa Cleveland of Chestertown; and seven grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Church Hill.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 672, Abingdon, MD 21009.

Jack Lewis, 68

REHOBOTH BEACH - Jack Lewis of Rehoboth Beach died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in his home. He was 68.

Mr. Lewis was born Jan. 25, 1931, in Elmira, N.Y., the son of the late Frank Norton and Gladys Lewis.

He had served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Lewis had lived in the Rehoboth Beach area for four years; he previously lived in Bradford, N.Y.

He was a member of Oak Orchard Post 28, American Legion, and of the Ocean View post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by a son, Steven M. Lewis of Sayre, Pa.; three daughters, Victoria M. Scalia and Carol J. Allard, both of Elmira, and Tina L. Sine of Lordsville, Ga.; a brother, William Fulkerson of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Carol Bailey of Spring Hill, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Atkins-Lodge Chapel of Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Charles Poukish will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Flowers are acceptable.

Wallace Beck Long Sr., 85

SMYRNA - Wallace Beck Long Sr. of Smyrna, and formerly of Felton and Middletown, died of heart failure Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in the Delaware Home and Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna. He was 85.

Mr. Long was born in Kent County, Md., the son of the late William and Minnie Long.

In his early years, he worked for the Maryland State Highway Administration. In the 1950s, he went to work as a butcher for Acme Markets, and retired in the mid-1970s.

Mr. Long was an avid woodworker and enjoyed making and creating many things. He loved to fish and garden and, in his early years, enjoyed bowling. In his retirement, he enjoyed camping.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Elizabeth Long, in 1989; and a son, Wallace B. Long Jr., in 1997.

He is survived by a daughter, Lydia Bailey of Earleville, Md.; two brothers, Robert Long of El Paso, Texas, and Walter Long of Florida; a sister, Minnie Lutheringer of Earleville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Earleville, where friends and family may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the adjoining churchyard cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 29, Earleville, MD 21919.

Muriel E. Lowin, 83

ELLENDALE - Muriel E. Lowin of Ellendale died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 83.

Mrs. Lowin was born June 29, 1915, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late Leslie Stark and Sara Van Gieson.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, George Lowin of Ellendale; a son, George W. Lowin of Bridgeville; two daughters, Joyce M. Smilek and Bonnie J. Maehr, both of Jackson, N.J.; a sister, Regina Gotty of Tobyhanna, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

Service and burial were private.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 600 N. Du Pont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947; or to the American Diabetes Association, 110 S. French St., Wilmington, DE 19803.

Walter Russell 'Boob' Matthews, 65

SEAFORD - Walter Russell 'Boob' Matthews of Seaford died of heart failure Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 65.

Mr. Matthews was born Jan. 29, 1934, in Bridgeville.

He had served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Matthews had been a truck driver, and was retired.

He was a member of American Legion Post 37.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Matthews of Seaford; four sons, Virgil Matthews, Derrick Matthews and Tyrone Matthews, all of Seaford, and Russell L. Matthews of Philadelphia; two daughters, Constance Matthews of Seaford and Michelle Matthews of Baltimore; four sisters, Madeline Roach of Milford, Ruth Matthews of Bridgeville and Thelma Nichols and Myrtle Banks, both of Seaford; a brother-in-law, Clifford Banks of Seaford; his mother-in-law, Mattie Batson of Seaford; seven brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Calvary A.M.E. Church, Concord, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Friends also may call from 6-7 p.m. Sunday at Young's Funeral Home, 308 N. Front St., Seaford.

Ruth E. Werner, 69

RIDGELY, Md. - Ruth E. Werner of Ridgely died of complications of a stroke Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Denton. She was 69.

Mrs. Werner was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late James Raymond Nichols and Bessie Nichols.

In 1941, she moved to Caroline County.

Mrs. Werner was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, J. Allen Werner Sr. of Ridgely; a son, Joseph A. Werner Jr. of Ridgely; two daughters, Shirley W. Newcomb of Lewes, Del., and Sandra L. Werner of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Clarence 'Dick' Nichols of Felton, Del.; four sisters, Thelma Messick of Stanton, Del., Blanche Steele and Ethel Wheatley, both of Bethel, Del., and Doris Jenkins of Harrington, Del.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. 2nd St., Denton, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Burial will be in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Arthritis Foundation, 1505 Emerson Ave., Salisbury, MD 21801.

James Fred Evins Jr., 76

PETERSBURG, Tenn - James Fred Evins Jr. of Petersburg, formerly of Dover died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in Lincoln Regional Hospital, Fayetteville. He was 76.

Mr. Evins was born on May 27, 1924, in Elora, the son of the late James Fred Evins and Margaret Pauline Bingham .

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1947 and was recognized for his dedicated service as a Seaman First Class. He served on eight ships, three of which were sunk by enemy fire.

Mr. Evins spent most of his life working as a movie theater projectionist and in the heating and air conditioning profession as an oil burner mechanic, retiring in 1988 to Petersburg.

He spent his later years making clocks and visiting flea markets.

Mr. Evins was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Marie Hines in 1988 and a brother Bingham Evins

He is survived by by three sons, James Fred Evins III of Marydel, Del.; Samuel Edward Evins of Kansas and Daniel Russell Evins of Bowers Beach, Del.; four daughters, Norma Jean Anderson of Wisconsin, Joyce Faye Melvin of Dover, Del., Theressia May Moore of Wyoming, Del., and Lucinda Marie Boyer of Felton, Del.; three sisters, Mildred Russell and Evelyn Lowery of Tennessee and Eula Gubernalt of New Jersey; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A Memorial service was held Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Petersburg Church of Christ, Petersburg.

An additional service will be 2 p.m. today in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, at the grave of his wife, Alma Marie Hines. Jackson Brown, a family friend will officiate.

Catherine Wise Maguire, 78

FREDERICA - Catherine Wise Maguire of Frederica, formerly of Chester, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Silver Lake Nursing Home, Dover. She was 78.

Mrs. Maguire had worked for the Methodist Book Store in Philadelphia for 15 years. She had worked as a administrative assistant with the Salvation Army in Chester, inaugurating the Good Friday prayer breakfast which served between 450 to 500 people, through donations she solicited from businesses in Chester. She retired in 1988, moving to Frederica.

She was well-known for her dinner parties and had one of the most beautiful gardens in Delaware. She was a very kind and gracious person who was dearly loved.

She was a member of both the Frederica Adult Center and the Milford Senior Center, attending Trinity United Methodist Church, Frederica.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth M. Denny of Sarasota, Fla.

Service will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements by Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford.

George T. Baxter, 86

DELAWARE CITY - George T. Baxter of Delaware City died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Gov. Bacon Health Center, Delaware City. He was 86.

Mr. Baxter was a farmer in the Delaware City and Middletown areas for 40 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. Georges Central Grange and an active member of the State Grange. He attended St. Georges United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beulah S. Baxter; two sons, Richard H. Baxter of Newark and Raymond G. Baxter of Delaware City, with whom he lived; a daughter, Jane B. Ritter of Wauchula, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy B. Gleason of Kansas City, Mo., and Patricia Haase of Washington, Pa.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniels & Hutchinson Funeral Home, Middletown, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, near Port Penn.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Central Grange or to St. Georges United Methodist Church.
