Mary Jackson, 102

LAUREL - Mary Jackson of Laurel died of acute renal failure Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 102.

Ms. Jackson was born Oct. 15, 1895, the daughter of the late William and Sara Ellen Hill Jackson.

She was a former domestic worker.

Ms. Jackson was a member of St. Matthew's First Baptist Church, Laurel.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew's First Baptist Church, Wolf Street, Laurel, with the Rev. Nathan McCoy officiating.

Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

John Guzman, 72

SMYRNA - John Guzman of Smyrna, formerly of Newark, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 72.

Mr. Guzman was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Los Angeles, the son of the late John and Bertha Guzman. He moved to Delaware in 1971.

He had worked for Chrysler for 30 years, retiring in 1986.

He is survived by a son, John Guzman Jr. of Bear; and a daughter, Mary Guzman, also of Bear.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Lakeside Cemetery, North State Street, Dover.

Freddie M. Jones, 63

HARRINGTON - Freddie M. Jones of Harrington died of heart failure Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in his home. He was 63.

Mr. Jones was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He was a supervisor at the DuPont Co. in Seaford, and retired in 1987.

He is survived by a son, Jeffery Dickerson of Harrington; a daughter, Vondoleir Jackson of Wilmington; two sisters, Shirley Murray of Harrington and Alice Goudine of Franklin, Va.; three grandchildren; a nephew, Rick Jones of Harrington; and extended family.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at McKnatt Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington.

Burial will be private.

Dianne E. Willey, 58

BRIDGEVILLE - Dianne E. Willey of Bridgeville died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in her home. She was 58.

Mrs. Willey had been employed by the town of Bridgeville as the police department secretary for 1212 years.

She was a member of Union United Methodist Church and active in its choir. She also was a member of Strikes and Spares Bowling Team of the Wednesday Night Bowling League, Seaford, for may years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, N. James Willey, in 1972.

She is survived by three sons, Lance J. Willey and Clay C. Willey, both of Bridgeville, and Chris A. Willey of Mount Tremper, N.Y.; her mother, Hildred A. Collins of Bridgeville; and two grandchildren, Jim Willey and Stacey Willey, both of Bridgeville.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union United Methodist Church, Market and Laws streets, Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Union United Methodist Church, Attn.: Bell Choir, 2 Laws St., Bridgeville, DE 19933.

Samuel O. LeCates Jr., 60

HARRINGTON - Samuel O. LeCates Jr. of Harrington died of heart failure Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 60.

Mr. LeCates was an automotive parts clerk for the Delaware Department of Transportation.

He is survived by his wife, Johnna H. LeCates.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at McKnatt Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Winona Thompson Brown Rosander, 95

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Winona Thompson Brown Rosander of Pensacola, and formerly of Farmington, Del., died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Baptist Hospital, Pensacola. She was 95.

Mrs. Rosander was born Sept. 28, 1903, in Wheatley, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of the late Isaac and Martha Thompson and the ninth-born of their 10 children.

She graduated from Harrington (Del.) High School in 1925 and was class valedictorian.

Mrs. Rosander entered Milford Hospital nursing school. After graduation, she was employed in the emergency department and attained the position of head nurse, making the transition from the former Front Street location to the present one, and working there until 1939.

She married Howard Brown of Hickman, Md., who died in 1929 after a short illness. She later married Aaron Rosander, an employee of the DuPont Co., whose work assignment took him to Washington state with the Manhattan Project. Mrs. Rosander resumed nursing as a medical supervisor at the Richland Hospital (Kadlac Methodist Hospital) until retiring in 1966.

Since retiring, Mrs. Rosander has lived in Richland, Wash.; Gettysburg, Pa.; Treasure Island; Petersburg; and, finally, Azalea Trace Retirement Community, Pensacola.

She was a member of Central United Protestant Church in Richland, and attended Ferry Pass Methodist Church in Pensacola. She was a member of Benton-Franklin Counties Nursing Association in Richland.

Mrs. Rosander was a 50-year member and past matron of Alma Chapter 100, Order of the Eastern Star and, in connection with that organization, received appointments as deputy instructor by two Washington worthy grand matrons, was grand representative to Connecticut, making the visited the Official Visit as the Grand Representative of the Washington Chapter in Connecticut. She was a supporter of the youth organizations affiliated with the Masonic order, Rainbow and Job's Daughters for girls and De Molay for boys. She was an honorary member of Roza Chapter 238, Order of the Eastern Star, Benton City, Wash., Ferry Pass Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Pensacola, and Rosa Court 98, Order of Amaranth, Pace; also, she was a life member of Kennewick Washington Court 18, Order of Amaranth.

Her eyesight had begun to fail in 1987, and she lost it completely in September 1997.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Guy Thompson, St. Clair Thompson, Lee Thompson, Francis Thompson and Carl Thompson; and four sisters, Voiletta Tatum, Eva Tatum, June Farrow and Vena Ogburn.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Aaron T. Rosander; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Fleischauer Funeral Home, 48 W. Market St., Greenwood, Del., where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Azalea Trace Heritage Fund, or to a charity of one's choice.

Vincent F. Saccardi Jr., 76

REHOBOTH BEACH - Vincent F. Saccardi Jr. died Wednesday, Oct 7, 1998, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. He was 76.

Mr. Saccardi was born Jan. 8, 1922, in New York City, the son of the late Vincent F. Saccardi Sr. and Mildred Coppola Saccardi.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 342nd Bomb Group, 9th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Forces.

In peacetime, Mr. Saccardi was a salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance.

He was a member of St. Edmond's Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Simpson Saccardi, in 1984.

He is survived by three sons, Vincent F. Saccardi III of Charlotte, N.C., William G. Saccardi of Middletown, Md., and Terrence R. Saccardi of Rehoboth Beach; and two brothers, Clarence R. Saccardi of Fairfax, Va., and Donald A. Saccardi of Potomac, Md.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Atkins-Lodge Chapel of Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Douglas Albert officiating.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Lewes.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the Home of the Brave Foundation, RD1, Box 149, Lincoln, DE 19960.

Vernon W. McNelly Sr., 42

KENTON - Vernon W. McNelly Sr., of Kenton died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 42.

Mr. McNelly was born April 10, 1956, in Wilmington, son of the late Vernon E. and Thelma P. McNelly.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Rebecca L. McNelly of Kenton; a son, Vernon W. McNelly Jr. of Kenton; a daughter, Rose Marie McNelly of Kenton; two brothers, Roy McNelly of Silver Springs, Fla., Henry Alters of Elsmere; five sisters, Verna Trump of Hartly, Deborah Stevens of New Castle, Cathy Bowers of Emmitsburg, Md., Harriet Strain of North Carolina and Ruth Winfield of Myersville, Md.

Service will be private and at the convenience of family.

Burial will be in the Longwood Cemetery, Longwood, Pa.

John Wright Sipple, 83

SEAFORD - John Wright Sipple of Seaford died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at The Methodist Manor House, Seaford, where he lived. He was 83.

Mr. Sipple was the son of the late Russell and Laura Sipple.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and became a industrial electrician.

Mr. Sipple worked as a farmer and had a grain combining business in the Kenton area. After the war he worked for Edward Budd Co., in Philadelphia, Playtex Co., Dover, and General Foods Co., Dover, before retiring in 1976. He held many patent letters on his industrial electrician work.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Dover.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Slaughter Sipple of Seaford; three sisters, Dorothy French, Ruth Olson and Jeannette Warner, all of Milford.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Doris Bonsall Johnson, 59

LONG NECK - Doris Bonsall Johnson of Long Neck, and formerly of Downingtown, Pa., died of a pulmonary embolism Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 59.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Elwyn, Pa., daughter of the late J. Clarence Bonsall and Florence Harper Bonsall.

She was a homemaker, devoted mother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband with whom she shared 39 years of marriage and love, George W. Johnson Jr.; five sons, David A. Johnson, Glenn O. Johnson both of Downingtown, Mark W. Johnson of Exton, Pa., Gary W. of Pottstown, Pa., and Scott A. Johnson of Guthriesville, Pa.; a sister, Joan Bonsall Palmer of Long Neck; and seven grandchildren.

Service will be noon Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Middletown Presbyterian Church, Elwyn, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Friends may also call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck.

Burial will be in Middletown Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elwyn.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to The American Diabetes Association or The American Heart Fund.
