Col. Raymond Joseph 'Zeke' Zydanowicz, 74

MILTON - Col. Raymond Joseph 'Zeke' Zydanowicz of Milton died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 74.

Col. Zydanowicz was born on May 9, 1924 in Cannonsburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Peter and Francis Zydanowicz.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Delaware National Guard since 1949, retiring in 1981 with the rank of colonel. He was rated a brigadier general at the time of his retirement. In 1976 he was assigned as the Chief of the Selective Service Section for State Headquarters and Headquarter Attachments. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for his devoted years of service to the Delaware Army National Guard in 1981. He accepted for the 281st AAA Brigade, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Trophy in 1957.

Mr. Zydanowicz worked for the U.S. Postal Service as branch manager, Postmaster of Rehoboth Beach and Talleyville, and as a customer service representative, retiring in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was very active in the Labor Union during his employment.

He was past president, vice president, and secretary of the National Federation of Post Office Clerks; president of the Claymont Kiwannis from 1975-1976; member of the Retired Officers Association-State of Delaware ('The Gang'); and a member of the Lewes Senior Center. He was a former member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Claymont, and St. Jude's Catholic Church, Del. 1, Nassau.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Genevieve 'Penny' Zydanowicz of Milton; a son, Robert Alan Zydanowicz of Maui, Hawaii; a daughter, Barbara Friend of Harbeson; two sisters, Doris Allnock of Frederick, Md., and Lorraine Henderson of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at St. Jude's Catholic Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Father Sheekey will officiate.

Burial will be 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Delaware Veterans Cemetery, C & D Canal, Bear, where a 21-gun salute will be performed.

Mary I. Adam, 67

MILLSBORO - Mary I. Adam of Millsboro died of natural causes Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in St. Joseph's Medical Center. She was 67.

Mrs. Adam was born in Berks County, Pa., the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Gehret Kaufman.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Adam was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin C. Adam on Oct. 27, 1991.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth A. Adam of Leesport, Pa. and Robert L. Adam of Kutztown, Pa.; two daughter, Diana Adam Reber and Deborah A. Adam Yob, both of Fleetwood, Pa.; a brother, Howard Kaufman of Blandon, Pa; four sisters, Stella Kaufman Schaeffer of Virginville, Pa., Betty Kaufman Henn of Leesport, Pa., Emma Kaufman Drumheller of Fleetwood, Pa., and Gladys Kaufman Moyer of Temple, Pa.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale, Pa., where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Beckers-St. Peter's Cemetery, Molltown, Pa.

Phyllis Loretta White, 56

HARRINGTON - Phyllis Loretta White of Harrington died after a long illness Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in Accord Health Services, Wilmington. She was 56.

Miss White was born June 14, 1942, in Harrington, the daughter of the late Homer and Elizabeth White.

She was educated in Delaware and attended Pierre S. duPont and William Henry high schools.

Miss White was employed by Scott Paper Co. for four years.

She loved attending church and praising the Lord, drawing, playing bingo and just being around her family, especially her loving daughter, Sheila White.

Miss White was a fun-loving, kind and caring person who would do almost anything for people. Many people in the community were touched by her joy, lighthearted humor and sincerity. She brought happiness and joy into the lives of those she touched.

She was a faithful, lifetime member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Harrington. Her favorite scriptures were Psalm 23 and John 3:16.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila White of Newark; four brothers, Phillip White of Baltimore, Frank White of Houston, James White of Harrington and Nathan Bryant of Ellendale; three sisters, Teresa Bowers of Dover and Frances Daniels and Beatrice Harris, both of Harrington; two stepbrothers, Wayne Bryant of California and Don Bryant of Chicago; three sisters-in-law, Terri White, Dellian White and Leola Bryant; two brothers-in-law, Phillip Harris and Florzell Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Service will be noon Saturday at St. Paul AME Church, 103 W. Mispillion St., Harrington, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Anna Vester Bailey, 80

CORDOVA, Md. - Anna Vester Bailey of Cordova died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in Memorial Hospital at Easton, Md. She was 80.

Mrs. Bailey was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Easton, the daughter of the late John Miller and Florence Warner.

She was baptized at an early age at the New Zion United Methodist Church. Later, she attended St. Matthew's U.M. Church, but her health did not allow her to be a faithful member.

Mrs. Bailey married Robert Bailey on Sept. 3, 1979.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, John and Anne Downs Sr., both of Philadelphia, and Ricky and Charlotte Chenault, both of Easton; a brother, Thomas Archie Miller of Cordova; three grandchildren, John Downs Jr. of Philadelphia and Cordell Bailey and Ashley Chenault, both of Easton; a great-grandson, Brandon Westley of Philadelphia; four brothers-in-law, Thomas Savoy, Herman Savoy, Marshall Bailey and Leroy Bailey, all of Easton; six sisters-in-law, Pauline Bailey, Joan Bailey, Bernice Savoy, Vanessa Bailey, Louise Miller and Addie Bailey; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and wonderful friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's U.M. Church, Longwoods, Md., where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Chapel Cemetery.

Betty Jean Johnson Baker, 65

SEAFORD - Betty Jean Johnson Baker of Seaford died of cancer Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Seaford Center of Genesis ElderCare, Seaford. She was 65.

Mrs. Baker was born Oct. 16, 1933, in Easton, Md., the daughter of the late Alfred and Corine Baker Johnson.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings Jay Baker Sr., in 1987.

She is survived by four sons, Jennings J. Baker Jr. of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Bruce W. Baker, Alfred G. Baker and Richard L. Baker, all of Seaford; a daughter, Bonny Hastings of Seaford; a brother, Reid Johnson of Hurlock, Md.; three sisters, Leona Hopkins of Harrington, Maude Evans of Seaford and Charlotte Burton of Bridgeville; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford.

Burial will be private.

The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, Region II Office, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803-0163.

James 'Eddie-B' Blake, 65

BRIDGEVILLE - James 'Eddie-B' Blake of Bridgeville died of heart failure Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 65.

Mr. Blake was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Tasley, Va.

He is survived by a brother, Frank Blake of Wilmington; a sister-in-law, Sarah Coleman of Pocomoke City, Md.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Blake of Wilmington; and nephews, nieces and friends.

Friends may call at noon Saturday at Pentecostal House of Prayer, Concord.

Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery, Seaford.

Robert V. Dether, 65

BRIDGEVILLE - Robert V. Dether of Cannon's Crossing near Bridgeville, died of cancer Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Life Care at Lofland Park, Seaford. He was 65.

Mr. Dether was a cabinetmaker with Bowmar Mill Works, Mardela Springs, Md., until his illness a year ago.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. Dether of Bridgeville; a son, Robert Dether of Newark; four stepdaughters, Debbie McCraken of Boothwyn, Pa., Darlene Figard of Tawanda, Pa., and Diane Carlen and Denise Durfor, both of Claymont; and four grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be private.

The family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 600 N. Du Pont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Aleine Koontz, 84

LAUREL - Aleine Koontz of Laurel died of a heart attack Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 84.

Mrs. Koontz was born June 22, 1914, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mollie Timmons Mears.

She was a teacher and administrative assistant at the Stockley Center, near Georgetown, retiring in 1976 after 23 years of service.

Mrs. Koontz was a member of the Sussex Memorial V.F.W. Post 7422 Auxiliary, Millsboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Koontz, in 1961.

She is survived by a son, Bill Koontz of Georgetown; two sisters, Reba Warren of Millsboro and Louise Mattison of Frankford; and a grandson, Bob Koontz of Alexandria, Va.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Dagsboro Redmen's Memorial Cemetery, near Dagsboro.

Carolyn M. (Ingraham) Bowman-McDonald, 85

FELTON - Carolyn M. (Ingraham) Bowman-McDonald of Felton died after an extended illness Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 85.

Mrs. McDonald was born and resided in Vineland, N.J. She also lived in Cedarville, N.J., and Marmora, N.J., before moving to Felton with her daughter.

She was formerly employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Cedarville as a clerk for 10 years, retiring in 1970.

She enjoyed crafts and reading.

Mrs. McDonald was a former member of the Cumberland County (N.J.) 4-H and the Rainbow Squares Square Dancers in Milmay, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Grant P. Bowman, in 1976; and by her second husband, Alvin McDonald, in 1985.

She is survived by a son, Donald Bowman of Millville; and two daughters, Barbara Myers-Liss of Felton and Joyce August of Cheswold.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville.

Mildred Cecil Murphy, 92

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Mildred Cecil Murphy of Chestertown, formerly of Price, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Tammy's House, Chestertown. She was 92.

Mrs. Murphy was born Sept. 20, 1906, in Hayden, Md., the daughter of the late Harry M. and Dollie Virginia Cecil.

She attended Queen Anne's County schools.

In 1916, Mrs. Murphy moved to Price, where she lived most of her life.

She married J. Randolph Murphy, the owner of Rural Supply Co. of Church Hill, Md., an electrical and plumbing business, in June 1925. They made their home in Price.

Mrs. Murphy enjoyed writing poems, many of which appeared in both Queen Anne's County and Kent County papers.

She was a longtime member of the Price Bethany United Methodist Church, having joined the church when she moved to Price in 1916.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; and by two brothers, H. Milton Cecil in 1970 and Nelson B. Cecil in 1986.

She is survived by a brother, Louis Marvin Cecil of Edgewater, Md.; three nephews, Louis Marvin Cecil Jr. of Baltimore, Richard T. Cecil of Bloomington, Ind., and Donald Cecil of Richmond, Va.; and a niece, Ann Cecil.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 408 S. Liberty St., Centreville, Md., where friends may call from 3-5 p.m. today.

Burial will be in Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Price Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, Church Hill, MD 21623-0006.
