Mary Frances Salter, 76

CLAYTON - Mary Frances Salter of Clayton died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Cortland Manor Nursing Home, Dover. She was 76.

Ms. Salter was born in Boothwyn, Pa., the daughter of the late George Churay and Mary Bena Churay.

She was a homemaker.

She was family orientated and enjoyed participating in family activities.

Ms. Salter was an accomplished cook and particularly enjoyed baking.

She was fondly known in her neighborhood as the 'Cookie Lady,' because she was always baking for her family and friends.

She enjoyed handicrafts, particularly embroidery.

Ms. Salter liked to work in her yard, gardening and growing flowers.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Churay and Alfred Churay; and three sisters, Carolyn Ovecka, Anne Stubbs and Frances Bunting.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ralph S. Salter of Clayton; a sister, Dorothy Mae Bostic of Church Hill, Md.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Millington, Md., where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be in Galena Cemetery, Galena, Md.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Eastern Shore Chapter, P.O. Box 2233, Salisbury, MD 21802-2233; or to the local Hospice Foundation of your choice.

Alan Joe Furst, 61

DAGSBORO - Alan Joe Furst of Dagsboro, and formerly of Pittsburgh and Rockville, Md., died of cancer Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 61.

Mr. Furst attended Penn State University.

He was a retired retail manager in the sporting goods industry.

Mr. Furst volunteered his time at the Dover Air Force Base museum.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gretta S. Furst of Dagsboro; two sons, Timothy L. Furst of Frederick, Md., and Andrew Furst of Milton; three daughters, Debra Susan Furst of Salisbury, Md., Shari H. Furst of Rockville, and Sheighla W. Furst of Milton; and a granddaughter, Siobhan Wyatt of Milton.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Holt's Landing State Park, where the Rev. Ruth Tull will officiate.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to The Sussex County Shelter, 326 S. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

James L. Murray, 81

OCEAN VIEW - James L. Murray of Ocean View died of heart failure Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in his home. He was 81.

Mr. Murray was born in Millville, the son of the late Harry Murray and Martha Melson Murray.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medic with the 77th Infantry of the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre.

He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service.

Mr. Murray and his wife owned and operated The James L. Murray Bait and Tackle Shop on Cedar Neck Road, in Ocean View, for the last 45 years.

He was an avid CB radio enthusiast, known by the call name 'Bloodworm.'

Mr. Murray was a charter member of the Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Theresa Murray of Ocean View; a son, Charles Murray of Woodbridge, Va.; three daughters, Rep. Shirley Price of Millville, Bonnie Cooper of Ocean View, and Ellen Magee of Williamsville; a cousin, Hazel Murray of Lewes; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services in Ocean View, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today.

Burial will be in St. George's Cemetery, Clarksville.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Interfaith Mission, c/ o Cathy Minor, Route 1, Box 19A, Ocean View, DE 19970.

Charles Oliver Hopkins, 69

DOVER - Charles Oliver Hopkins of Dover died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, in his home after a lengthy illness. He was 69.

Mr. Hopkins was born July 15, 1929, in Columbia, the son of the late Mary Hopkins Harmon. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the military service, serving two years in the U.S. Army and 18 years in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Korean War and received an Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He retired from the Air Force as a flight engineer in September 1970. After retirement, he was employed at Central Middle School, Dover, as a custodial supervisor.

Mr. Hopkins was a member of the American Legion in Maryland and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Delaware.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a son, Isaac Gaines.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Helena Hopkins of Dover; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest Jerome and Kathleen Brinkley of Dover; a daughter, Catherine Elaine Brinkley of Dover; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Barron Hopkins of Fruitland, Md.; two sisters, Loretta Quick of Philadelphia and Evelyn Winder of Dover; an uncle, Otis Hopkins of Sharptown, Md.; his father-in-law, Allen L. Brinkley Sr. of Dover; six brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a devoted friend, Perry 'PJ' Jackson; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Saulsbury Road, Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover.

J. Francis Wootten, 87

MILFORD - J. Francis Wootten of Milford died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in Bayhealth Medical Center-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 87.

Mr. Wootten owned and operated the Hotel Norman in Milford from 1956 until he retired in 1982. Prior to that, he was a retail salesman.

Mr. Wootten was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church and a charter member of Milford Elks Lodge 2401.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacquelyn L. Wootten, in 1997.

He is survived by three sons, William Wootten of Harrington, Edward Wootten of Escalon, Calif., and John Wootten of Bridgeville; a daughter, Edith M. Wootten of Milford; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, where friends may call from 9-10:45 a.m.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 107 S. Market St., Wilmington, DE 19801; or to the Arthritis Foundation, Suite 200, 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

Augustine Gressenbucher Pientko, 93

TOWNSEND - Augustine Gressenbucher Pientko of Townsend died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in the home of her cousin, John R. Zawaski Sr., with whom she resided. She was 93.

Ms. Pientko was born in 1904, in Alsace Lorraine, France, the daughter of the late Emile Gressenbucher and Magdalena Gressenbucher.

She was a Cotton Mill employee.

Ms. Pientko was a former member of the Paul J. Riecle Post VFW in Chester, Pa.

She is survived by two cousins, John R. Zawaski Sr. of Townsend and Augustine Pientko of Chester.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Cemetery, Lewes.

In memory of Augustine Gressenbucher Pientko, the family suggests that contributions be made to a charity of choice.

Charlotte F. Clough, 66

DOVER - Charlotte F. Clough of Dover died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. She was 66.

Ms. Clough was the daughter of the late John Fields and Iva Fields.

She worked as a secretary in the Maintenance Department for Playtex, for over 40 years.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Ms. Clough will be missed, greatly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James 'Hook' Clough.

She is survived by a daughter, Georgia Kimball of Magnolia; two brothers, William Fields of Dover and Isaac Fields of Camden; a sister, Hettie Hill of Rehoboth Beach; and a grandson, Scott Kimball of Magnolia.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be in Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover.

Brenda K. Adams, 41

CLAYTON - Brenda K. Adams of Clayton died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in her home. She was 41.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph R. Adams Jr. of Smyrna; two sons, Joseph R. Adams III, and David Robert Adams, both of Clayton; her parents, David and Wanda Cole, both of Clayton; three sisters, Janet Brown of Amsterdam, Texas, Lisa Graham of Clayton, and Teresa Hall of Smyrna; two brothers, David C. Cole Jr. of Wichita, Kan., and Robert M. Cole of Clayton; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 6:30 p.m. today at the Kingdom Hall, Middletown.

Burial will be private.

Aubrey R. Cordrey Sr., 65

MILLSBORO - Aubrey R. Cordrey Sr. of Millsboro died of cancer Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. He was 65.

Mr. Cordrey was born in Millsboro, the son of the late Frank Cordrey and Margaret B. Cordrey.

He was an U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Cordrey worked for the Delaware State Police, retiring in 1978 as a Captain.

He then worked as a hardware manager for Masten Home Center in Millsboro, for 14 years.

He later worked in the Security Department of Townsend's Inc., Millsboro.

Mr. Cordrey was a member of the American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard, a member of the Millsboro Lions Club, a member of the Harvard Associates in Police Science, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Cordrey.

He is survived by a son, Aubrey R. 'Beau' Cordrey Jr. of Magnolia; four daughters, Sharon White of Easley, S.C., Tracy Revel of Whitesville, and Audra Mitchell and Dawn Cordrey, both of Dagsboro; three brothers, Charles R. Cordrey and Gerald Cordrey, both of Millsboro, and Donald Cordrey of Oak Orchard; a sister, Betty Ware of Millsboro; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Prince George's Chapel Cemetery in Dagsboro, where Delaware State Police Honors will be accorded.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Camp Barnes, c/o the Delaware State Police, P.O. Box 430, Dover, DE 19901.

Mamie Ruth Foskey Wilson, 93

BLADES - Mamie Ruth Foskey Wilson of Blades died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 93.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Millsboro, the daughter of the late Greensbury Foskey and Anna Mariner Foskey.

She was a machine operator at Walker's Garment Co. in Blades for 30 years, retiring in 1978.

She was the oldest resident of Blades, known around town as Mom-Mom.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Blades United Methodist Church, Blades.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Norman Wilson, in 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Irene M. Wilson of Blades; a grandson, Terry A. Wilson; and two great-granddaughters, Michelle Ann Wilson and Megan Amie Wilson.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home in Seaford, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Blades Cemetery, Blades.
