BETHANY BEACH - Joseph Theodore Pennock of Bethany Beach died of cancer in his home, Tuesday, March 3, 1998. He was 73.
Mr. Pennock was born January 17, 1925, in Kennett Square, Pa. the son of the late Herbert J. Pennock and Ester Freck.
He was an Army pilot and served in World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware. He was a self-employed sales engineer for Valcon Sales Engineering Company for 24 years. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of the Fenwick Lions Club, Fenwick.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia C. Pennock; three daughters, Cathy Runde of Sterling, Va., Nancy Sager of Wilmington and Lisa Rossberg of Ellicott City, Md.; a sister, Jane Collins of Kennett Square, Pa., and six grandchildren.
Service and burial will be private.

Alfred N. Stump, 90
COLWYN, Pa. - Alfred N. Stump, longtime resident of Colwyn, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998 in Prospect Park Care Center where he has lived for the past two years.
Mr. Stump retired from General Electric after 20 years of service.
He was a life member of the Colwyn Fire Company and an active member of St. James of Kingsessing Episcopal Church in South West Philadelphia.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Stump, and his second wife, Emily M. Stump, on February 8, 1998, and a daughter, Jean Riley.
He is survived by three sons, Alfred Stump of Smyrna, Charles Stump of Phildelphia, and Howard Stump of Clayton; one daughter, Ruthanne Stump of Pottstown, Pa.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Marvil Funeral Home, 1110 Main St., Darby, Pa., where friends may call one hour before.
Burial will be in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, Pa.
Tilda Ada Passwaters, 80
MILFORD - Tilda Ada Passwaters of Milford died of respiratory failure Monday, March 2, 1998, in the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 80.
Mrs. Passwaters was a homemaker.
She attended Victory Church in Dover.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Passwaters, in 1985.
She is survived by three sons and their wives, Raymond Edward Passwaters and Sylvia of Milford, Lee Roy Passwaters and Barbara of Seaford and Clarence James Passwaters of Milford; three daughters and their husbands, Norma Lee Hubble of Milford, Barbara Kenton and Franklin of Federalsburg, Md. and Sally Adams and Landy of Seaford; 25 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave. in Milford.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
William Remus 'Buddy' Gibbs Jr., 79
SEAFORD - William Remus 'Buddy' Gibbs Jr. of Seaford died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 79.
Mr. Gibbs was born 1918 in Mesic, N.C., the son of the late William R. Gibbs Sr. and Louise Jarvis Gibbs.
He received his elementary education in Mesic.
Mr. Gibbs worked various jobs including landscaping and custodial service. He retired as a custodian from the Hartly Fire Company in Hartly.
He served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Gibbs joined the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist in Mesica at an early age. He was also a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Dover. Later years, he became a member of the prayer band in Seaford, lead by Brother Travers. He fellowshipped at the Christian Life Church under the leadership of Pastor Jeff Bryant until his illness.
He was preceded in death by two children, Arlene and Harold, and one brother, Mottie Gibbs.
He is survived by his wife, Luetta Gibbs of Smyrna; a daughter, Virginia Monroe Walker of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Melvin Gibbs of Silver Springs, Md., and Kevin Gibbs of Greensboro, N.C.; a son-in-law, William Walker; two daughter-in-laws, Barbara Gibbs and Josephine Gibbs; three sisters, Nancy Swift, Josephine Smith and Saraphine Swift, all of North Carolina; three brothers, Hilton Gibbs, Bill Gibbs and Rufus Gibbs, all of North Carolina; a brother-in-law, John Smith of North Carolina; three sister-in-laws, Esther Gibbs, Rosetta Gibbs and Joann Gibbs, all of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and many loyal friends.
Service will be noon Saturday at the Benny Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.
James Edward Butler, 67
CAMDEN-WYOMING - James Edward Butler of Camden-Wyoming died of cancer Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in his home. He was 67.
Mr. Butler was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Milford, the son of the late James E. Butler Sr. and Mildred G. Smith.
He was self-employed in well-work and plumping, before losing his eyesight 30 years ago, after which he raised beef cattle, goats and sheep.
He enjoyed talking on the CB radio as a hobby.
Mr. Butler was a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge 534 for 29 years.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Charlotte J. Hobbs Butler; a brother, L. Layton Butler of Millsboro; and two sisters, M. Louise Schuyler and Shirley A. Larrimore, both of Centreville, Md.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Sandtown.
Piret S. Jerread, 52
MILFORD - Piret S. Jerread of Milford, formerly of Houston and Wilmington, died Monday, May 18, 1998, in the Milford Center. She was 52.
Mrs. Jerread graduated from Milford High School in 1964, where she was on the National Honor Society and co-editor of the senior yearbook. She was graduated from the University of Delaware in 1968.
She retired from DuPont's in Wilmington after 19 years of service. Her last position was in Dupont Customer Finance. She retired early in 1992.
Mrs. Jerread was a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Milford.
She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Jerread; a daughter, Kirsten P. Black of Houston and her father, Leo K. Saksen of Milford.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. June 13 in the Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Ave., Milford.

Ruth Ann Allen Demby, 56
DOVER - Ruth Ann Allen Demby of Dover died after a short illness Thursday, May 14, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. She was 56.
Ms. Demby was the daughter of the late Clarence Gibbs and Margaret Demby.
She received her education at Booker T. Washington School.
She was formerly employed by Quality Inn in Dover.
Ms. Demby was a caring mother and loving grandmother. She was always willing to listen and lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Everyone in the neighborhood loved her for her out-spoken and joyous ways.
She is survived by two sons, Lawrence Demby and James Taylor, both of Dover; two daughters, Sophonia Demby of Ocean City, Md., and Valerie Demby of Dover; two brothers, Raymond Demby of New Jersey and Clarence Wells of Dover; nine grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Service will be 7 p.m. today at Center of Faith C.O.G.I.C., 326 W. Loockerman St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be 9 a.m. Friday in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.

E. Jeannette Kirby Ward, 80
DOVER - E. Jeannette Kirby Ward of Dover died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in her home. She was 80.
Mrs. Ward was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Thompsonville, the daughter of the late, Joseph C. and Ethel Short Kirby.
She graduated from Milford High School and Beacom College in Wilmington.
Mrs. Ward worked as a bookkeeper for I.D. Short Lumberyard in Milford prior to getting married.
She and her husband owned and operated the Hi-D-Ho Restaurant on U.S. 113 in Dover for over 20 years.
She was a devoted mother and loving grandmother. She enjoyed traveling and shopping.
Mrs. Ward was a member of the Wesley U.M. Church in Dover, the United Methodist Women of the Church, and the Kent County Republican Women's Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Lois J. Ward Capone and her husband, Patrick J., of Newark and Joan K. Ward Wisniewski and her husband, John V., of Ocean View; three grandchildren, Andrew Capone and his wife, Kristin S., Eric J. Wisniewski and Catherine Ward Capone; and a great-grandson, Andrew Patrick Capone Jr.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Bradford and Reed streets, Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Della Case, 90
DOVER - Della Case of Dover died of a stroke Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in Silver Lake Nursing Home, Dover. She was 90.
Mrs. Case was the daughter of the late Norman H. Willis and Lizzie Urian Willis.
She graduated from Dover High School and Goldey College.
Mrs. Case worked as a secretary for the State Department of Public Instruction and was later employed by the USDA Farm Service Agency as an office clerk.
She lived 64 years on a farm south of Dover which she and her husband purchased. She moved to Green Meadows Retirement Home in 1996.
Her hobbies included gardening and needlework.
Mrs. Case was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Dover.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrington M. Case, and a son-in-law, Eugene M. Metheny.
She is survived by a son, Willis H. Case; two daughters, Marion C. Metheny and Della C. Watkinson; a son-in-law, Robert L. Watkinson; a daughter-in-law, Glenda J. Case; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

Robert Lewes, 66
DOVER - Robert Lewes of Dover died of natural causes Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in Capital Health Care Center, Dover. He was 66.
Mr. Lewes was the son of the late Edward and Mary Lewes.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Lewes was a member of the Federal Fraternal Order of Police.
He is survived by his wife, Clare Lewes; a daughter, Adrienne McCutchen of Dover; a son-in-law, Anthony McCutchen of Dover; and four grandchildren, Lamar, Latasha, Lavoy and Lavaughn McCutchen, all of Dover.
Service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Minus Funeral Home, 222 N. Queen St., Dover.
