LOCAL AND STATE AFFAIRS.
Shooting Match Near Middletown.
A shooting match between R. T. Clayton and Edward Perry took place last Wednesday near town. Fifteen pigeons a side were used, Clayton killing five and Perry seven of the number. What the purse was, we are unable to state.
New Store in Townsend.
Geo W. Ernest has commenced business as a dealer in general merchandise – dry goods, groceries, &c., in Townsend. Mr. Ernest is a good business man and very popular with his acquaintances, and will, we hope, succeed well in his new undertaking.
Store Broken Into and Robbed.
The grocery store of A. T. Bradley in this town was broken into on Monday night and robbed of $6 in money and some fruit. An entrance was affected by boring a hole in the shutters of a back window and removing the bolt. Suspicion rests upon some young men in this town as being concerned, but no arrests have been made.
Divine Service.
The services at Bethel M. E. Church (Pivot Bridge) will be varied on Sabbath morning next, the 10th inst. Prior to the delivery of the sermon, the pastor will read N. P. Willis’ sacred poem, the “Healing of the Daughter of Jairus.” Services at 10-1/2 o’clock, to which all are cordially invited.

Personal.
Mr. P. H. Boone, of this place, left here on Tuesday morning for California, where he has been offered a position as teacher in a high school at Oakland in that State. He will go by way of the Union and Central Pacific Railroads, and will, if circumstances will permit, run down to Salt Lake and make a short visit to the Mormon City.

Mrs. George W. Davis is visiting friends in Philadelphia.
Miss Emma B. Eccles is visiting relatives in Wilmington.
Miss Sophia Heller has been spending sometime in Wilmington.
Mr. L. V. Aspril has returned from a visit to Baltimore relatives.
Miss Bess Marshall has returned from a short trip to Philadelphia.
Mrs. Clara B. Green, of Middletown, is visiting her sister, Mrs. F. B. Watkins.
Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Watkins and Mrs. Green were in Chesapeake City Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. George Rose, of Smyrna, spent Sunday with Mrs. Z. Taylor Atherly.
Mrs. R. J. Foard, of Newark, N. J., is the guest of her father, Mr. Columbus Watkins.
Mrs. William Curtis and children, of Newark, are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Corbit.
Mrs. George A. Green and daughter, Mildred, returned from New Jersey where they spent Thanksgiving with relatives.
Miss Alice M. Brown pleasantly entertained her friends Wednesday afternoon in honor of Miss Mary Louise Curtis, of Newark.
The public schools are closed owing to the fact that the teachers are attending Institute which is in session at Middletown.
The annual Thanksgiving reunion of the Williams family was held at Mr. J. K. Williams, several of the relatives remaining over Sunday.
Rev. and Mrs. R. L. Hallett returned Saturday from their wedding trip and are receiving at the Manse. Miss Ann Hallett who has been keeping house for her brother has returned to her home at Milford.

State All Set to Mark ‘Delaware Day’ Dec. 7
Series of Programs Will Honor Ratification Of Federal Constitution
A series of programs this week will mark the state’s ratification of the federal constitution on Dec. 7, 1787. Friday, Dec. 7, has been proclaimed Delaware Day, commemorating the event.
Former U. S. Senator Daniel O. Hastings of Centerville will be the principal speaker at a meeting of the Delaware Society of Sons of the American Revolution set for 6 p.m. Friday in the DuBarry Roof of the Hotel DuPont, Wilmington.
At the meeting, the society will present its annual award to the state school teacher “who has rendered outstanding service in the teaching of Americanism.”
Dr. Perkins To Speak
Dr. John Perkins, president of the University of Delaware, addressed a joint meeting of Dover service clubs in Friendship Hall of the Dover Wesley Church Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
Delaware Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will hear Dr. Harry Vance Holloway, former state superintendent of public instruction and chairman of the Delaware Day Commission. They will meet Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., in the parish house of Christ Church, Milford.
“How Delaware Came to Be,” a resume of the state’s origin and establishment of its boundaries, will be Dr. Holloway’s topic.
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORS CLUB TO HOLD XMAS PARTY DEC. 12th
The Friendly Neighbors Home Demonstration Club will hold its annual Christmas party on Wednesday evening, Dec. 12th, at 6:30 o’clock, in the Taylor’s Bridge Community Center. The party will consist of a turkey supper for all members and a guest, and an entertainment program appropriate for the Yuletide season.
The committee on arrangements follows: Mrs. Lee David, Mrs. Harold McGrath, Mrs. Thomas Short and Mrs. Arthur Ginn.
Local Lions Club To Plan Christmas Party
The Middletown Lions Club will hold its first meeting of December on Monday evening at 7 o’clock in St. Anne’s Parish House. Final plans for the club’s Christmas party and participation in the Community Council’s “Needy Family Drive” will be discussed and acted on. All members are urged to attend.
