LOCAL AND STATE AFFAIRS.
Happy New Year to you.
The days of ’76 are waning fast.
The Legislature will meet on Monday.
We have had nearly two weeks of sleighing.
Wm. S. Hilles, of the firm of Hilles & Jones, of Wilmington, died in Nice, France, last Tuesday.
The ninth volume of the TRANSCRIPT ends this week and the tenth will (D. V.) be commenced next week.
Francis Sohen, editor of the Wilmington Pioneer (German) slipped and fell, Monday morning, dislocating his ankle.
David C. Rose, coroner, has moved from Townsend to Wilmington, and taken up his residence at 625 East Sixth street.
Anniversary Sermon.
Rev. Doctor Patton, of the Presbyterian Church, will preach his customary anniversary sermon, giving the statistical history of the church during 1876, to-morrow (Sunday) week.
A Pretty Heavy Haul.
Samuel England went into the house of Peter Spahn, a Wilmington beer saloon keeper, broke open a bureau drawer and carried off $1100 and one gold, and two silver, watches. He was arrested and the watches and most of the money recovered. Samuel is now boarding at New Castle with Sheriff Grubb.
Religious Notices.
Rev. Geo. R. Bristor will read Willis’ Poem of “Rizpah and Her Sons” at the Bethel M. E. Church, Pivot Bridge, Md., on Sunday morning immediately before the sermon. In the afternoon of same day service will be held in the new church building at Summit Bridge. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to be present at both services.
Free Temperance Entertainment.
There will be a Young People’s Temperance Entertainment in the Town Hall, Middletown, commencing at 7 o’clock on Friday evening the 5th of January, 1877, consisting of music, dialogues, etc. The entertainment will be free to all. Those interested in a subject so vital to this community are earnestly and cordially invited to attend.

B. S. Hall and wife spent Christmas Day with Edward Armstrong, wife and family, of McDonough.
Harry Shawn and son Gordon Shawn, of Wye Island, Md., were visitors at the parsonage Monday.

Howard Padley and wife, of near Mt. Pleasant, Del., were week-end visitors at the home of her parents, John Garner, Sr. and wife.
Samuel Buckworth, wife and daughter, and Charles Duryea, of Middletown, Del., spent Christmas Day with Mrs. Sarah Buckworth and daughter.
Mrs. George Goldsborough, of Middletown, and Miss Esther Manlove, of Wilmington, Del., spent the week-end with M. E. Manlove, wife and family.
A Christmas programme of recitations, plays and music was presented by the school children at the schoolhouse Thursday evening of last week. The offering, which was used for the Near East Relief, amounted to $6.75.

Rev. L. B. Morgan was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. Clarke Fontaine, Jr., and daughter, Mary Stevenson, in Towson, Md., on Christmas Day.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin R. Bendler, of Newport Heights, were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford R. Bendler, Jr., and family on Christmas Day.
Pfc. Horace C. Stanley, stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., is spending a ten-day leave here with his father, Mr. Horace Stanley, and family.
Miss Effie Bendler left on Saturday of last week to spend the winter months with Mr. and Mrs. William Boyer and daughter in Wilmington.
Alan Harris, F. N., stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, spent Christmas Day with Mrs. Catherine Harris and Miss Frances Harris near town.
Miss Edith Green spent Christmas Day with her mother, Mrs. Bertha Realy and brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William Singleton, and family in Elkton.
Mayor and Mrs. Thomas R. Newnam, Miss Jane Newnam and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Littleton visited Mr. and Mrs. Edward Newnam and family in Oxford, Pa., on Christmas Day.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Edward Ennis had as Christmas Day guests their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. Clark Ennis, of Smyrna; Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hanna. of Wilmington, and Mrs. John W. Dickinson, of this town.
Engagement Announced
Mr. and Mrs. George Eberhard announce the engagement of their daughter, Dorothea Ann, to Mr. Charles E. Schreppler, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Schreppler, of this town. Miss Eberhard is associated with the Delaware Trust Company here, and Mr. Schreppler is employed at the General Motors Corporation in Wilmington. No date has been set for the wedding.
Novel Decorations at St. Anne’s For Christmas
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hinman built and decorated a model church which is lighted up each night outside the Parish House of St. Anne’s Church. The choir boys and angels were made by Mrs. Hinman’s sister, Mrs. Raymond Moore of Lewes. The display will remain up until after December 30th.
Engagement Announced
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph B. Carty, of Odessa, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jean Justine Carty, to Cpl. Richard Bradford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bradford, of Ithaca, N.Y.
No date for the wedding has been set.
