MAY OPEN PICKLING PLANT
Enthusiastic Meeting of Farmers Held Tuesday Night
A most representative and enthusiastic number of farmers from this locality met in the assembly room of the Fire House Tuesday afternoon, to listen to the proposition of Mr. Harold H. Rothman, representing a large pickling concern of New York City. Mr. Rothman stated that he desires 100 acres of cucumbers grown in this section of New Castle County during the coming season. In the event that the growers are satisfied that the crop is profitable in this community, he will establish a pickling cannery here the following year, and in that event large quantities of peppers for pickling and cabbage for sauerkrout would have to be grown in conjunction with the cucumber crops. This would, of course, be beneficial to the community in two ways. It would give our farmers another profitable crop and furnish employment during the canning season.
Prof. Adams of the Extension Department of the University of Delaware was present at the meeting and gave a very interesting talk on the merits of cucumber raising and the successful methods of planting, cultivating and protecting the crop from destructive diseases and insects. His talk greatly encouraged the farmers present regarding the value of this farm commodity.
Mr. Rothman stated during the course of his talk, that the average gross receipts from an acre of cucumbers is from $150 to $250. In an article published in The Transcript, some weeks ago, it was pointed out that a certain section of Kentucky averaged $500 an acre on this crop the past season, so Mr. Rothman’s figures are conservative.
All those present at this meeting seemed deeply impressed and heartily favored the enterprise. A committee of five men Messrs. J. D. Reynolds, J. T. Shallcross, George C. Burge, L. A. Dreka and E. H. Shallcross was appointed to secure the required acreage for this year. Indications point to the community’s acceptance of the proposition, and the new crop will likely be introduced here this season.

Four Local Swimmers Impress at YMCA Meet
Joe Mandes Won A 1st And 3 Seconds; Hitchens Also Cops A 2nd Place
Four members of the Middletown Lions Swimming team gave a good account of themselves in the annual state title meet held in the YMCA pool in Wilmington Tuesday evening. Three new champions were crowned during this event which was held in conjunction with the “Y” New Year’s Day Open House.
In the 95-lb. Class, Joe Mandes of Odessa won the 50-yd. Freestyle and placed second in both the 25 yd. Freestyle and the backstroke. He also placed 2nd in the Class C diving in the 85-lb. class. His whole performance proved quite impressive to coaches and spectators. Charles Hitchens placed 2nd in the 25 yd. Backstroke in the 85-lb. class.
Richard Wheeler of Odessa placed 5th in the 50 yd. Breaststroke in the unlimited class. Other fine performances by local boys were made by Brian Loss of Odessa in the 25 yd. Backstroke (125-lb. Class) and David Levinson, Middletown, in the 50 yd. Free style. Leonard Hampson, team coach, expressed himself as quite pleased with the team’s performance.
Only one defending champion, breaststroker Bob Wagner, was successful, and the former Lehigh athlete missed by only three tenths of a second the pool and local record of 1:05.7 he set last year.
Wagner, who transferred to the University of Delaware this fall, swept to an easy victory in the race for the News-Journal trophy. He was clocked in 1:05.7, and was followed in by two other Delaware mermen, Jack McDaniel and Tony DiMaio.

Following a tradition of the past few years, on Sunday evening, December 26th, the lovely old Bendler home in Port Penn once again opened its doors to more than 130 friends of Thelma Bendler working its magic of candle lit windows, beautifully decorated interior and the warm welcome one always finds there.
Guests flowed in throughout the evening, form Port Penn, its surrounding areas as well as Folcroft and Wallingford, Pa.
Kendall Messick, with his Polaroid photography, added to the pleasure of the guests, who found it fascinating watching their pictures slowly emerging from a blank piece of “paper.”
Her many friends proclaimed the charming hostess and her annual open house furnished a delightful climax to their Christmas holiday.
