Delaware Farmers Receive Only Fractional Subsidy Loans
The $311,000 loaned to Delaware farmers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on 1950 crops represents a tiny fraction of the $747,000,000 loaned for this purpose throughout the nation, it was cited Sunday.
The loans are part of the Federal government’s efforts to nudge prices nearer “parity” in the two biggest parts of its three-way price support program.
The loans paid for Delaware crops were reported by the Congressional Quarterly service, which also stated that $438,000 went to Delaware farmers last year under the farm conservation program. The program has $395,000 allocated to Delaware for 1952. This program is headed for a fight in Congress, where the Farm Bureau Federation and the Grange favor slashing it.
At the same time, reports from Washington showed that last year the state’s income from farming jumped more than 17 percent, to an all-time high of $117,573,000. Income was $93,728,000 from livestock and products, and $23,845,000 from crops. This compared with $82,714,000 from livestock and $16,378,000 from crops in 1950, for a total that year of $99,005,000.

Medical Center Site Has Been Chosen
On Friday, February 13, the Board of Directors for the Middletown – Odessa – Townsend Medical Center selected the vacant Acme store site on West Pennington Street, Middletown, as first choice for locating the project.
Pending approval from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, from which substantial funding is sought, and the completion of financial negotiations, the structure could be in use within eight months.
A representative from the foundation will visit the area this week, inspecting the proposed site and interviewing the board members. The board’s second choice for locating the center will also be shown.
During the board meeting, chaired by president, Joan Mason, of Odessa, numerous properties were considered. Among the factors were not only costs of acquisitions and construction, but also nearness to population, parking, expansion potential and accommodations for the handicapped.
The board expressed its gratitude to engineer George Hart and architect Joseph Angel who volunteered their services in evaluating each proposed site.
