Middletown’s New Structure to be Modern in Every Respect
Members of the Middletown School Building Commission recently elected when this district voted to bond for $70,000 to build a new school building, met in Dover on Friday with the members of the State Board of Education and organized.
George S. Williams, president of the State Board of Education, was elected chairman of the building commission; Eugene H. Shallcross, of Middletown, vice-chairman; Dr. H. V. Holloway, secretary, and Daniel W. Stevens, of Middletown, acting secretary. The other two members of the commission in Middletown are Jesse L. Shepherd and John C. Alston. The commission voted to employ A. J. Taylor as engineer, and Gilbert and Betelle as architects.
The district will get $81,000 from the state under the $2,000-$1,000 school building program bill, making a total of $151,000 that will be available for the new building. This figure does not, of course, include the architectural and engineering costs which are financed by the Delaware School Auxiliary. These, with the school grounds purchased several years ago by Pierre S. duPont for $10,000, and donated to the local school, brings the total cost of the school and lot to about $180,000.
