H.S. Goldey, one of the most experienced educators in the United States, has been president of Goldey College for seventeen years.
Until further notice the Middletown Public Library will be open on Tuesday evenings, from 7 to 8:30; Saturday afternoons, from 3 to 5; Saturday evenings, from 7 to 8:30.
Hickory trees in this vicinity seem devoid of nuts. The trees a year ago were loaded with nuts and this year it will be difficult to find a tree containing more than a half a dozen.
The fall meeting of the Presbytery of New Castle will be held in Elkton, Md., beginning on October 7th. Rev. S.L. Irvine, the retiring moderator, will preach the opening sermon.
Many hogs in this locality have died during the last few days of cholers. The pens of almost all the farmers are affected, and Reed & Ennis are heavy losers, their loss aggregating 38 hogs.-Smyrna Times.
Rev. C.T. Wyatt, pastor, will preach in Bethesda M.E. Church tomorrow, both morning and evening. Subjects: 10:30, “A Saving Name.” 7:30, “An Acquaintanceship that brings Peace.”
A cantata entitled “Cinderilla in Fairy Land” will be presented in the Opera House about the middle of October by the juveniles, under the auspices of the primary department of the M.E. Church.

Messrs, Harold Clarkson Harris and Robert Laird Harris, eldest sons of Rev. and Mrs., of St. Georges, will enter the Freshman class of the University of Delaware this fall, both taking technical courses.
The Grape Vineyards in Kent County are seeing the season’s end of a busy industry. The vineyards have been busy places the past few weeks, and a truck loaded with splendid fruit have been moved to the city markets.
Mr. George C. Burge, one of our local mile dealers has received from the State Board of Health Laboratory, the following report made from a sample of his milk: Fat, 5.0%; Bacteria, 22-500; Clean; Remarks-very satisfactory.
The commanding officer at Fort duPont has recently prohibited swimming in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal for the soldiers of the post. There was a similar order in effect the earlier part of the season which was later rescinded. Stagnant water is the cause of the prohibitive order.
The Smyrna Male Quartette, composed of J.E. Hoffecker, L.M. Price , W. Townsend Jefferson, and Samuel L. Rogers, who made such a fine impression at the Home Coming Day at Friendship M.E. Church in Thoroughfare neck last Sunday, have accepted an invitation to sing at the Rally Day Exercises at Scott M.E. church next Sunday.
Dean Winifred J. Robinson, of the Women’s College, University of Delaware, announced today that the dormitories of the college will not be open to upperclassmen until Monday. All rooms are reserved for freshman until Monday as Freshman Week started today and continues until Monday. Dean Robinson also stated that baggage should not be brought to the college until the dates specified for the entrance of the classes.
The assembly of the Smyrna High met Thursday afternoon. There was an address by Professor C.W.W. Schantz, which was followed by a service of song. The officers of the assembly were elected as follows: President, Henry Price : Vice-President, Dorothy Riggs: Secretary, Marie Smith: Treasurer, Mr. Wright: Advisory Board, Miss Beckett, Miss Graham: Board of Tellers, Franklin Staats and Benlah Taylor. Each class elected their individual officers.
An alarm of fire late Tuesday night called the Smyrna and Clayton fire truck to near Blackbird to save the Chevrolet automobile truck of J. Dewey Quillen which in some manner caught fire. By the time the firemen got there the fire had gained such headway as to make an almost total destruction. Nothing remains of Mr. Quillen’s truck save the chasis. The truck was loaded with grapes which he was transporting from near Dover to Philadelphia market.
