Odessa-Middletown Trolley Line
The Odessa and Middletown Electric Railway was formally opened Saturday evening. About 7 o’clock the officers of the road and their friends boarded the big passenger car at the Middletown hotel. The car was tastefully decorated with flags and bunting, and as Motorman Long turned on the current and the car began to move, Miss Blanche Cochran, daughter of E. R. Cochran, broke a bottle of champagne on the bumpers and christened the car Edgar A. Tennis.
This honor was conferred as a favor on Mr. Tennis, who built the road. There were 143 persons on the car. Hundreds of people along the Middletown streets cheered the car as it sped on its initial trip, and the reception to the car as it reached Odessa was very enthusiastic. Crowds of people cheered and many attempted to board the car, but were unable to do so. Upon arriving in Middletown, the car returned to Odessa with nearly another hundred passengers.
The travel over the road Sunday was heavy as a colored camp meeting was held in Odessa, and the new line received a large amount of money. The road goes through a beautiful country, passing along the main road between Middletown and Odessa, commencing at the railroad station in this town and ending at the wharf of the steamer Clio in Odessa.
In addition to passenger traffic, there is an opening for a freight line, as merchants from Middletown, Warwick, Cecilton, Sassafras, and Earleville can have their freight brought to Odessa on the Clio, and then transferred to Middletown, and in the near future a road may be built from Middletown to connect with the several towns on the eastern shore.
