Leonor P. Hampson
Leonor P. Hampson of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, peacefully at home. She was 88.

She was born in Sucre, Bolivia, daughter of the late Jose Prudencio and Navidad Bustillo Prudencio. Mrs. Hampson was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Middletown-Odessa Garden Club and the Lower New Castle County Republican Women's Club. She held several offices as a member of the Women's Club of Odessa.

Mrs. Hampson met her husband, Leonard Joseph Hampson, now deceased, in Bolivia, where he was a lay minister. After marriage, they traveled to the United States and settled in Odessa, where he was raised. She was a homemaker and was actively involved in her beloved community and championed state legislation on environment and animal protection. She was a successful businesswoman throughout her life. In her later years, she was known for her beautiful garden bordering U.S. 13.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Alice Aguilar and her husband Jose of Chesapeake City, Md., Carlotta Cline and her husband H.G. of Odessa, and Dorothy Dudgeon and her husband David of Fort McDowell, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Leonard Joseph Aguilar and Suzanna Aguilar; and three great-grandchildren.
A service was held Nov. 5 at the former St. Paul's United Methodist Episcopal Church located on High Street in Odessa. Interment was in Old Drawyer's Cemetery.

Jason Hatcher
Jason Hatcher of Hartly passed away suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at the Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 26.

Jason liked working outdoors and had worked on a farm in Hartly. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also liked to keep busy with many hobbies including working on cars and computers. Jason also loved to travel.

He was preceded in death by his cousins, Amanda and Matthew Cosner, and his uncle Robert Krisco. He is survived by his parents, Steven and Nancy Simmons of Hartly, two sisters, June Simmons at home and Michelle Simmons of Tennessee, and his special niece and nephew, Breah and Zac, also of Tennessee, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be sadly missed and was loved by many.

A graveside service was held Nov. 9 at the Townsend Cemetery.

Horace L. Hotchkiss IV
Horace Leslie Hotchkiss IV of Wilmington passed away Nov. 1, 2005. He was 84.

Mr. Hotchkiss was born in New York City Dec. 13, 1920, to Alta Jane Fitch Hotchkiss and Horace Leslie Hotchkiss III. Beloved husband of Ann Griswold Hotchkiss, devoted father of Lucinda Hotchkiss-Diel and Benjamin Hotchkiss, and the esteemed brother of Winchester F. Hotchkiss, Jane Goss and the late Lynette Finlayson.

Mr. Hotchkiss graduated from the Westminster School in Simsbury, Conn. and the Yale University class of 1943 with a major in history. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in World War II in the European theater. He was the keeper of the wallpaper collection at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City, the Clark Collection at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the curator of the Winterthur Museum properties in Odessa, from which he retired in 1984 after 25 years of service.

Mr. Hotchkiss was active in the Odessa community, serving on local boards and committees. A member of the Mayflower Society, the Huguenot Society, and the American Ivy Society, he was the co-editor of the Journals of Blakely Wilson and the author of articles in various historical publications. He was a member of the Delaware Historical Society and the Duck Creek Society, and an avid researcher into local 18th century history, decorative arts and architecture, taught related courses extensively and continued to pursue his research and writing interests.

Services will be at St. Anne s Episcopal Church in Middletown on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Historic Odessa Foundation, P.O. Box 697, Odessa, DE 19730.

Josephine M. Gary
Josephine M. Gary, longtime resident of Delaware City, died Nov. 1, 2005, due to complications from a stroke. She was 89.

Her home was always open for a visit, a meal, or a friendly game of poker and she will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Gary; her brothers, Peter and Wally Stephens; her sister, Helen Samoyan; and her son-in-law, Richard Sturgeon. Josie is survived by her sister, Millie Sepulveda of Fairfield, Calif.; her daughter, Maxine M. Sturgeon of Maui, Hawaii; her son, Tony Gary and his wife Deborah of Pike Creek; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service and burial will be private.

She was a lover of animals, so in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

David K. Thomas
David Kenneth Thomas died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, in Citizens Nursing Home, Havre de Grace, Md., after a long illness. He was 77.

Dave was born in Melbourne, Australia on July 7, 1928. He was the youngest of eight children born to Frank and Minnie Thomas. He arrived in Tasmania at age 13 to pursue a career as a steeplechase jockey. Dave experienced success in thoroughbred racing all over the world including racing in France, England, Australia and Ireland. In 1950, Dave rode in the English Grand National at Aintree. He also twice rode in the Carolina Cup, winning once, in the early 1950s. Dave ended his career as a jockey in 1970. He went on to work with many horseracing establishments. He moved with his family from California to Maryland in 1977 to take a position as an exercise rider with the former Tybridge Farm, located outside of Chesapeake City.

In 1989, Dave left Tybridge Farm for a position with Sharp Farms of Middletown. He continued to work even after his diagnosis of Alzheimer s until 1998, when his illness forced him to retire from horses, the only career he had ever known. Dave was quite a character, always quick with a joke and never told the same one twice. He enjoyed learning a bit about everything and could talk to anyone about anything. His wit will be missed by many.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Minnie; sisters, Winnie Cohen, Phylis Hughes and Dorothy Parsons of Melbourne, Australia; and sister, Kathleen Yarnold of London, England. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Joe, Frank and Bobby Thomas of Melbourne, Australia.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; son David, both of Middletown; daughter, Nyree Thomas of Bath, Maine; daughter Sara Barnes and husband Jamie, with whom Dave resided in Warwick, Md., before being admitted to Citizens Nursing Home in 2001; and stepdaughter Marie O'Leary and her husband John, of County Cork, Ireland. He is also survived by his grandchildren Stephen Worsley, Cameron Barnes and Allison Barnes of Warwick, Md., Megan and Ethan Thomas of Statesboro, Ga. and Shane, Ross, Connor and Hazel of County Cork, Ireland.

A funeral service was held Nov. 9 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., South Chesapeake City. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery.

As Dave loved all animals, great and small, donations would be appreciated to the Cecil County SPCA in the memory of David K. Thomas, c/o the funeral home.

Robert L. McGowan
Robert Leon McGowan of Middletown died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 68.

Robert was born May 17, 1937, in Tabor City, N.C. He had been a supervisor for the former Star Enterprise Delaware City Refinery, retiring in 1996 after 34 years of service. He enjoyed waterfowl hunting, decoy carving and raising and training whippets.

Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Della Williamson McGowan; and his brother Charles McGowan.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, B. Lynne Selby McGowan; sons, Robert L. McGowan II and his fianc e Lisa C. Short, of Middletown, and Keith A. McGowan and his wife Janna, of Dover; brother, Barney McGowan and his wife Brenda, of Bear; sisters Margaret Buckson and Shirley Kite and her husband Quinn, all of St. Georges.

A funeral service was held Nov. 9 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Delaware City. Interment followed in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association of Delaware, 1021 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806.

Thomas E. Baize
Thomas Earl Tommy Baize Jr. of Kenton passed away suddenly on Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, in the Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. He was 25.

Tommy was employed by N. Barton Associates as a roofer for the past four years. He was a graduate of Smyrna High School and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Tommy was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather James E. Blanchfield in 2004. He is survived by his wife of four years, Stephany; one son, Thomas E. III; his parents, Thomas E. Sr. and Doris A. Baize of Townsend; one sister, Crystal Sholly of Townsend; his maternal grandmother, Sara Blanchfield; his paternal grandparents, George and Edith Baize of N.C.; two nephews, James and Joshua Sholly; three nieces, Jaclyn Ivry, Destyni Keeler, Eryn Keeler; his in-laws, Mike and Brenda Keeler, Jenifer and Dave Ivry, and Michael and Steven Keeler.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Townsend Cemetery.

Linda Price Carey

Linda Price Carey of Middletown died suddenly at home on Sunday, October 28, 2001. She was 54.

Mrs. Carey was an antique dealer and collector and also worked as a real estate broker with Wilson H. Wilcox Co. in Middletown. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Middletown and had volunteered at the M.O.T. Senior Center. She was a beloved wife and mother and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Richard R. Carey; two sons, Richard R., Jr. of Odessa and Matthew A. of Drexel Hill, Pa.; her mother, Hazel W. Price of Galena, Md.; three sisters, Susan P. Beattie of Middletown, Ida P. Nabb of Galena and Joyce Morales of Millington, Md.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alvah A. Price , in 1992.

Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Stephens Cemetery, Earleville, Md.

The family suggests contributions to the M.O.T. Senior Center, 300 S. Scott Street, Middletown, DE 19709.

Hilda Andrea Davis

Hilda A. Davis of Newark died Saturday, October 6, 2001 in Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 96.

Dr. Davis was a professor of English at Wilmington College, New Castle, retiring in 1977; a special lecturer in English and associate director of the Writing Center of University of Delaware, Newark, retiring in 1970; and an administrator at Delaware State Hospital, New Castle from 1961 to 1968.

The recipient of many honors, Dr. Davis was awarded the U. of D. Medal of Distinction in 1987 and was induction into the Delaware Women Hall of Fame in 1986. She was the first African-American to hold a full time U. of D. contract and the first female senior warden in the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware. The YWCA of New Castle County named the Hilda A. Davis Residence for women in her honor.

She was active in organizations including the YWCA of New Castle County board, AAUW and League of Women Voters, Newark, NAUW Wilmington and national president, Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Sigma Theta, president of Wilmington chapter, Delaware Psychological Assn, Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, Philadelphia chapter, NAACP, lifetime member and a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Delaware City.

Dr. Davis is survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to YWCA of New Castle County, 233 King Street, Wilmington.

Gregory James Fokides

Gregory James Fokides of Clayton died Thursday, October 25, 2001 due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was 74.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late James and Anna Fokides. Mr. Fokides was a Navy veteran of World War II and head retired as a salesman for Canada Dry after many years of service. Following his retirement, he moved to Delaware.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1295, Middletown. He was known by all to be willing to help anyone at anytime.

He is survived by two sons, James Gregory Fokides of Bordentown, N.J. and Nicholas James DiCristo of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Christina Burd (William) of Bensalem, Pa. and Maria Dettorre (Dino) of Robbinsville, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and a special friend, Peggy Morris of Riverview, Fla.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 2 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom Street, Wilmington. Friends may call Friday at the church from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Newark.

Contributions may be sent to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1200 Klockner Road, Trenton, NJ 08610 or to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.

William Edward Holton

William Edward Holton of Bellmore, N. Y. died Friday, October 5, 2001. He was 92.

Born in Hauppauge, Long Island, N.Y., he lived in Bellmore most of his life. A veteran of World War II, William served in the Navy (Seabee s) in the Philippines 1941-1945. He owned Holton Motors on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore from 1954 until he retired in the late 1960s.

Mr. Holton s favorite hobbies were fishing and operating his 21-foot Cabin Cruiser Sparetime as that is when he had time to enjoy it.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma (Ritchie) Holton, in 1949; and his second wife of 42 years, Alice Holton, in 1991.

He is survived by a daughter, Joy Getty (Kenneth) of Middletown; three grandsons, Robert Getty (Camie) of Germany, Kenneth W. Getty and Edward P. Getty, both of Middletown; a granddaughter, Ellen Steward (David) of Crossroads, Pa.; two great grandsons, Nathan and Evan Steward of Pa.; two great granddaughters, Jenna Stewart of Pa. and Patricia Getty of Germany; and beloved neighbors and friends Sam and Nellie Isman and family of Bellmore.

Services were held Oct. 8 at St. Barnabas RC Church and interment in Lake Ronkonkoma Cemetery, Lake Grove, N. Y.

In lieu of flowers, contribution in memory of William Holton can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, care of Ted Whitlock, 103 E. Park Place, Middletown, DE 19709.

Josephine M. Jo Ischia

Josephine M. Ischia of Newark died Thursday, October 25, 2001 at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 80.

Mrs. Ischia was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., moved to Elkton, Md. in 1955, and in 1962 moved to Newark. She graduated from Goldey-Beacom College in 1967.

Mrs. Ischia worked for Tiokol Chemical in Elkton as a security administrator and retired in 1974. Following her retirement, she worked as a florist at Castle Mall until 1982. She was a member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Newark. Mrs. Ischia enjoyed cooking, old movies and playing the lottery.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, R. Frank Ischia; a daughter, Janet I. Brown of Newark; a son-in-law, James A. Brown, Sr. (Betsy) of Wilmington; a daughter-in-law, Melinda J. Ischia of Townsend; grandchildren, James, Jr., Jennifer and Jessica; and three great grandchildren, Teagan, Mackenzie and Aidan.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert F. Ischia in April 2001.

Services were held Oct. 30 at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, Newark.

Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Daniel J. Kepley, Sr.

Daniel J. Kepley, Sr. of Viola, formerly of Middletown, died on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 49.

Son of the late Elward and Naomi Kepley, formerly of Middletown. Mr. Kepley was a self-employed upholster operating the Furniture Clinic and servicing several Furniture stores in the area. He was also an accomplished Bag Pipe player and member of the DelMar and District Pipe Band. He played the pipes at the annual Founders Day Celebration at Old St. Anne s Church in Middletown.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sue Ellen A. Kepley; four daughters, Sue Ellen Marston of England, Amanda Rhinelander of N.C., Flora Lee Kepley and Arabelle Kepley, both at home; and three sons, Daniel J., Jr., Benjamin and Robert, all at home; a brother, Rev. George Kepley of Bear; and one grandchild.

Services were held Oct. 28 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Interment was in Camden Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.

Cecelia Mackenzie

Cecelia Mackenzie of Newark died Saturday, October 27, 2001. She was 86.

She worked for many years as a retail store manager.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Stephen, Thomas, Kenneth, John and Cecil Connell.

She is survived by a son, Patrick T. Mackenzie of Leawood, Kan; a brother, Raymond Connell of Fla.; and a niece, Joan Szostkowski of Middletown.

Services were Oct. 30 at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Richard L. Thomas

Richard L. Thomas of Bear died Wednesday, October 24, 2001. He was 75.

Born in Altoona, Pa., Mr. Thomas served during WWII in the U.S. Navy aboard the LST 1049 in the South Pacific. He was a Scottish Rite Masonof the Delaware Consistory, Hiriam Lodge #25 AF & AM and VFW Post #475 of Newark. He retired in 1990 from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #80 and was employed previously by the DuPont Company.

He was a member of St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, trustee and a member of the Session.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirleen; sons, Randy Thomas (Jody) of Landenberg, Pa., Richard Thomas (Robin) of Newark and Craig Thomas (Karen) of Rehoboth Beach; a daughter, Raelyn Thompson (Edward) of Middletown; brothers, Earl Thomas and Donald Thomas, both of Altoona; sisters, Betty Miller of Martinsburg, Pa. and Madelene Gorsuch of Altoona; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were Oct. 29 at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, Newark.

Committal was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church Building and Grounds Fund, 200 Marrows Road, Newark, DE 19713.

James Lynn Jimmy Trainer

James Lynn Trainer of Middletown, formerly of Secane, Pa, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001.

He is survived by a son, James Trainer; daughters, Julia Trainer, Jennifer Trainer and Janine Trainer; their mother, Judith (nee Donaduce) Barrett; his mother, Mary (nee Beauchamp) Trainer; a brother, Joseph F. Trainer; sisters, Patricia Duffy, Janet Matyszczak and Marie Paneghello; grandchildren, Sage Lynn and Gylian Trainer and Aiden Trainer Mollenkopf; and his companion, Cynthia Mitchell.

Services were held Oct. 27 at St. Eugene s Church, Primos, Pa.

Burial was private.
