Mary Krejci Lester passed away, Tuesday Jan. 18, 2005. She was 80.
Mary, born and raised in Middletown, graduated from Middletown High School and Goldey-Beacom College.
After marrying she became a full time homemaker and mother.
In 1979, she and her husband opened the ChesDel Restaurant. After dedicating 20 years of their lives, and their love for the restaurant, they retired to Florida.
She was preceded by her son David J. Lester and parents Joseph and Molly Krejci.
She is survived by husband Earle J. Lester, of St. Georges, and Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.; daughter Dawn E. Lester of St. Georges, daughter Donna M. Lester and her twin daughters, Kate and Leslie Anne of Hockessin; grandson Darren J. Lester, wife Carol and children Kaylee and Ryan of Middletown; brother Joseph F. Krejci of Orlando, Fla.
Services were held at The Chapel, Gracelawn Memorial Park, in New Castle. Burial followed.

John R. Weber
John R. "Jack" Weber, of Townsend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at the Kent General Hospital in Dover. He was 74.
Mr. Weber was a retired Senior Master Sgt. with 34 years service in the Delaware Air National Guard in New Castle. He had also retired from the Chrysler Corporation after 33 years, where he was a member of the Millwright's Local 1545. After his retirement, he continued working for LabCorp and the Guardian Co. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 1295, VFW Post 3792, and the American Legion Post 25, all of Middletown. He enjoyed working out in his yard and spending time with his grandchildren.
Two brothers, Clark and Burton Weber, preceded him in death.
Jack is survived by his wife of 24 years, JoAnn, two sons, John Weber of Newark, David Ellis and his wife Wanda, of Townsend, three daughters, Lisa Wisniewski and her husband Bob of Newark, Mari Norris and her husband Robert of Townsend, and Bonnie Weber of Bear, a sister, Margurite Warren of Seaford and a brother Calvin Weber of Townsend, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved pet dogs, Susie and Annie.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 24 at the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.

Laura M. Greenwell
Laura M. Greenwell, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
Laura was born in Ocean City, Md., the daughter of Elwood and Lillian Harmon, and made the Wilmington-New Castle area her home for most of her life.
Laura was a homemaker, devoted mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family. She was a great cook and enjoyed going to the beach. She loved pets, most of which were strays that she took in, but most of all her family was her life.
Laura was predeceased by her husband Charles H. Greenwell, Jr., in 2000, and her loving daughter Donna M. Wilkerson in 1987.
She will be sadly missed by her family; Paula D. Pienkos of Bear, Terry Greenwell of Middletown, Kathy L. Greenwell of New Castle, Harry D. Greenwell of New Castle, grandson Christopher B. Greenwell of Bear, whom she raised as one of her own children for over 24 years; seven additional grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends she has made over the years.
Laura s Life Celebration was held on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Beeson Memorial Services of Newark. Interment followed in Silverbrook Cemetery.
Anna M. Biddle
Anna M. Biddle, formerly of Odessa, passed away on January 20, 2005 at Churchman's Village Nursing Home in Newark. She was 79.
Mrs. Biddle was a member of the Women's Club of Odessa, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Odessa Fire Co., a member of VFW Post 3792 in Middletown, and St. Paul s United Methodist Church in Odessa. She had worked at Singer Co. in Pa., Leeds Travel Wear in Smyrna, the old Globe Union Co. in Middletown, and at the Skyline Inn Tavern. She always enjoyed her hobbies of crafting and crossword puzzles.
Her husband, John T., and a brother John Finley preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Robert C. and his wife Barbara and grandson Robert Jr., all of Middletown, Donald L. and his wife Joyce A. and grandsons Joshua and Alexander, all of Wilmington and with whom she had recently been living with, and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Biddle of Middletown.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 26 in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment was in Old Drawyers Cemetery, near Odessa.

Carlton Blendt, Jr.
Carlton Blendt, Jr., of Townsend, passed away on January 22, 2005. He was 76.
Carlton was born Nov. 15, 1928 in Powell, Wyoming and moved to Woodland Beach when he was 7. He graduated from Smyrna John Bassett High School, where he met his wife of 56 years, Betty Jane Regener. They farmed together until 1990. During that time, Carlton served four consecutive terms as state representative and served on numerous committees including Chairman of the Delaware State Water Conservation Committee, ASCS, Farm Bureau, Grange member and Master of Smyrna Grange and elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna. In 1956, Carlton received the award for Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year for the Smyrna and Clayton area. From 1986 to 1995, he worked as a real estate agent for Emerson Realty.
His hobbies included his family, oil painting, traveling and working on the Blendt family history, which is now in the Delaware Public Archives Hall of Records in Dover. During the past 10 years, he bravely battled cancer but during that time, spent many precious hours with his grandchildren, fishing and playing checkers.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children, David Blendt of Townsend, Bonnie Proud of Magnolia, Diane Steward of Harrington and Susan Moore of Ithaca, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Alice Bailey of Dover.
The funeral service will be held to noon on Thursday, Jan. 27, at First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.
In lieu of flowers, it was Carlton's wish that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, DE 19977.
Curtis Billings
Curtis Billings, of Warwick, Md., passed away on Friday, January 21, 2005 at his home after experiencing a stroke the previous week.
He spent the last days of his life in the company of his four children, Dusty Billings-Lilien of Warwick, Md., Susan Billings of Norwood, Colo., Jonathan Billings of Providence, R.I., and Benjamin Billings of Telluride, Colo.
Curtis enjoyed a full and satisfying life. Curtis attended Yale University before enlisting in the Army Corps of Engineers where he served the U.S. Military in the Philippines as a lieutenant before returning to graduate as an engineer from Yale in 1945. Curtis worked as a chemical engineer representing the Cabot Corporation in the Far East, residing in Singapore and England for many years with his wife Patricia and three children. Following his return to the United States, Curtis relocated to Concord, Mass. where he remained for many years.
In 1962, he started his own market research company, Billings Research located in Concord, Mass. He later remarried to Bonnie Jameson in 1976, residing in Concord with their two children Eliza Jameson and Ben Billings. During his retirement, Curtis moved to St. Augustine, Fla. in 1994 before moving finally with his daughter and her husband in 2001. He spent his last years in Warwick, where his rooms overlooked the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake.
An avid sailor, Curtis spent many years cruising the Atlantic Coast on his favorite sailboats the Triumverate and the Elise G . Often found along the Maine Coast, he was a respected and knowledgeable sailor, navigator and shipmate. Curtis was a charming and charismatic man who spent many years as an amateur actor fondly remembered for his role in the Concord Players production of the King and I , and an annual fixture as a minuteman flag bearer in the Concord Patriots Day Parade. Curtis enjoyed skiing in New England, his daily New York Times crossword puzzles, and his pipe.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Billings and Elise Garceau Billings of Boston, Mass., his brother, Edmund Billings of Barrington, R.I., and his grandson, Max Lilien.
Curtis is survived by his sister Elizabeth Billings Roitman; his brother; his four children; his previous wives, Patricia Barry Billings and Bonnie Billings Wauters; stepdaughter Eliza Jameson McMurray; and his four grandchildren, Walker Ferguson, Megan Billings, Hilary Billings, and Coral Ferguson.
Curtis will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the many people whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, contributions bay be made to the Democratic National Committee, 403 South Capital Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003.
The family will hold services privately.
Frank W. Mallozzi
Frank W. Mallozzi, of Townsend, died Monday, January 17, 2005, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Scranton, Pa. He was 80.
Mr. Mallozzi was born August 8, 1924 in Dresher, Pa., son of the late Salvatore and Clara Tuccerone Mallozzi. He was an industrial arts teacher at Brandywine High School for 36 years before retirement.
He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the Smyrna Lions Club and St. Polycarp Roman Catholic Church in Smyrna. He was an avid golfer and was active in state politics with the Democratic Party.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Light Mallozzi; five daughters, Ann Ellis of Havertown, Pa., Gloria English of Cupertino, Calif., Jean Phelan of Virginia Beach, Va., Clair Choffel of Chesapeake, Va. and Gail Pettee of Smyrna; one sister, Modesta Marcincola of Ambler, Pa.; one brother, Salvatore Mallozzi of Erie, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Polycarp Roman Catholic Church, Smyrna, on Monday, Jan. 24.
Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Polycarp Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.
Walter James Lacy, Sr.
Walter James Lacy, Sr., of New Castle, died on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at his home. He was 75.
Mr. Lacy was born in Washington DC on January 8, 1930, son of the late George W. Lacy and Emma (Young) Andrews.
A retired professional truck driver, he was a member of Teamsters Union Local #326 for over 30 years and had been employed with several transportation companies during his career.
Previously, he had worked as a farmer.
Mr. Lacy was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1295 in Middletown, where he was honored with the senior title of "Pilgrim." He was also a Mason and a member of Jackson Lodge #19 AF&AM.
In his leisure time, Mr. Lacy greatly enjoyed collecting vintage Ford tractors and browsing flea markets.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. (Johnson) Lacy; six children, Walter J. Lacy, Jr. and his wife, Vanessa, of Richmond, Va., Susan L. Markatos and her husband, Harry, of Wilmington, Sandra L. Lapasnick and her husband, Craig, of New Castle, David W. Lacy and his wife, Deborah, of Newark, Daniel C. Lacy and his wife, Robin, of Middletown and Rebecca A. Hollett and her husband, David, of Wilmington; sister, Linda Lacy of Newark; 18 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, in New Castle.
Interment followed in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn.

Leonard Michael Bacon, Sr.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Bacon was born in Wilmington on July 9, 1932, son of the late Francis X. Bacon and Loretta M. (Scully) Bacon.
He was a general contractor by profession and operated his own construction firm for many years. A deeply spiritual person, Mr. Bacon was a longtime member of Holy Family parish in Newark and was instrumental in establishing the Holy Angels Athletic Association, also in Newark. A talented woodworker, he greatly enjoyed working on many types of handyman projects and took pride in gardening around his home. He was an avid outdoorsman and camper throughout his life. Most of all, Mr. Bacon will be remembered as a caring and devoted family man who delighted especially in attending his beloved grandchildren s sports and school activities.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Ann Bacon.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Rose McHugh Bacon; children, Leonard Michael Bacon Jr. and his wife, Shirl, of Elkton, Md.; James Francis Bacon and his wife, Mary Jane, of Middletown; Joseph Michael Bacon and his wife, Kelly, of Elkton; Christopher Michael Bacon and his wife, Dana, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Patricia Dobies and her husband, Richard, of New Orleans, La.; Francis Xavier Bacon and his wife, Cindy, of Bear; Mary Clare Waegele and her husband, Robert, of Newark; and Elizabeth Ann Heitzenroder and her husband, Kevin, of Newark; siblings, Bernadine Goucher and her husband, Tom, of Towson, Md.; Francis Bacon of Baltimore, Md.; Donald Bacon and his wife, Lorelle, of Asheville, N.C.; and Mary Buccheri and her husband, Michael, of Baltimore, Md.; 24 grandchildren with three more expected; five great-grandchildren with one more expected; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at on Jan. 24 at Holy Family R.C. Church. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
Dwayne Lavender
Born in Blackbird, on July 19, 1936, he was the son of the late Pearl (McGinnis) and Arthur Lavender.
Mr. Lavender worked for Grubb Lumber Company in Wilmington for 45 years, where he served as vice president of operations for the past 25 years.
He was an avid bowler and spent countless hours working in his vegetable garden. Eating crabs and hosting barbeques for his family were two of the things he loved most. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife.
Mr. Lavender enjoyed attending Blue Hen football games with his brother Sherman and his nephews Ray, Sherman Jr., and George. He also was a dedicated Eagles fan. He shared his passion for sports by coaching Little League Baseball in the M.O.T. and Smyrna areas for more than 25 years. He taught others the value of good sportsmanship and stressed education to those he coached.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a dear friend. Mr. Lavender lived a full life and through his many interests he touched the lives of others in countless ways.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lavender was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Lavender; and a daughter-in-law, Janet Lavender.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor (Burris) Lavender; two daughters, Linda and Dawn Lavender; two sons, Dwayne Lavender Jr. and his wife Lis , and Donald Lavender; three brothers and their wives, Dennis and Ethel Lavender, Dewey and Margie Lavender, Sherman and Marie Lavender; a sister-in-law, Mary Lavender; nine grandchildren, Dwayne III, Lindsey, Donald Jr., Kristi, Justen, Toni, Kayla, Maegan and Brandon; a great granddaughter, Nykole; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 26 from the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where family and friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.
Phyllis Steele
Mrs. Steele was born and raised in Salisbury, Md., the daughter of the late John and Elva (O Brien) Phippin. She graduated from Wicomico High School. Mrs. Steele worked at White & Leonard and TO Ruaurke. After marrying and moving to Delaware, she worked for Lighthipe Realty and in the office of Dr. David Howard. Mrs. Steele had worked for the last 25 years for Sussex Shores Water Company.
She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Chester Steele; a son, Charles Steele and his wife, Carol, of Ocean View; a daughter, Nancy Bennett and her husband, Dan, of Middletown; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Justin, Bethany, Julie and Caroline.
A funeral service was held on Jan. 20 at the Ocean View chapel of Melson Funeral Services. Burial was in Mariner s Bethel Cemetery, in Ocean View.
