John W. Duhamell, Sr.

John W. Duhamell, Sr., of Galena, Md., died January 10, 2005 in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown, Md. He was 78.

Mr. Duhamell was born July 31, 1926 in Galena, son of the late Arthur W. and Katherine Ford Duhamell.

A lifetime resident of Galena, his career as a livestock manager for Harry Rudnick & Sons began as a teenager and grew to 50 plus years of service, retiring in 1995.

He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

Mr. Duhamell was a life member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Company, joining in 1943, where for 29 years he held continuous fire line and/or administrative positions including president, chief and assistant chief, and also co-chaired the First Dogwood Festival. His memberships included the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36 in Chestertown and VFW Post #652 in Millington, and he was a former member of the Galena Lions Club and Millington Moose Lodge #1909.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason Duhamell and Renee Geary.

Mr. Duhamell is survived by a son, John W. "Jack" Duhamell, Jr. and his wife, Ethel, of Galena; a daughter, Carol Raykowski and her husband, Jim, of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Betty Rhodes and her husband, Leon, of Greensboro, Md.; and two grandchildren, Amy and Scott Duhamell, both of Galena.

A funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 17, at the Galena Funeral Home. Burial was in Galena Cemetery.

Memorials may be offered to the Galena Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 189, Galena, MD 21635.

Katherine E. Zuzek

Katherine E. Zuzek, of National City, Calif. Formerly of Wilmington, passed away January 3, 2005 after a long illness. She was 91.

She was the daughter of Elwood P. Walker and Louise Yates Walker.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles E. Zuzel, her first husband William C. Mousley, Sr. and her daughter Josephine (Peaches).

She is survived by her two sons, William Mousley of Bear, James Mousley of Leola, Pa., 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Services and burial were held in California on Jan. 8.

Robert Cleaver Cofer
Robert Cleaver Cofer passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, in Sacramento, Calif. He was 83.
Mr. Cofer was born June 26, 1923, in Delaware City. He was a 1941 graduate of Delaware City High School and began college at the University of Delaware.

Midstream through college, he served a tour of duty in World War II with the U.S. Army, 84th Infantry Division Railsplitters, Company C, 335th Infantry Regiment. His tour of duty included the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), the Rhineland and the Central Europe Campaigns. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to the University of Delaware and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering in 1948.

In 1953, Mr. Cofer moved to southern California, where he worked as a chemical engineer, surfed, met and married Marjorie Moir, bought his first home and had two sons. In 1970, he was hired away by the Sacramento County Air Pollution District and moved his family north to Sacramento. After he retired from the County of Sacramento in 1984, he began a second career of golf, tennis and travel. He spent retirement years in both Sun City West, Ariz., and Sacramento.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Ellen Cofer, in August 2003.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Ross A. and Nancy Cofer, and Scott E. and Darla Cofer; and three wonderful grandchildren, Amanda Cofer, Jaime Cofer and Derek Cofer.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006; or the Easter Seals Society, Attn: Online Giving Coordinator, 230 West Monroe, Suite 1800, Chicago, IL 60606.

Clifton D. Craft
Clifton D. Craft of Newark died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007. He was 41.

Mr. Craft was born July 9, 1965, in Wilmington, son of the late Robert C. and Kathleen Marvel Craft.

A landscaper by profession, he owned and operated Eagle Landscaping for 15 years.

Mr. Craft coached youth baseball for many years and also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his leisure time.

He is survived by two children, Clifton J. Craft and Lacie L. Craft, both of New Castle; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert W. and Denise Craft and James D. and Clare Craft, all of Newark; a sister, Kimberly A. Craft of Middletown; nieces and nephews, Christine Craft, Michael Craft, Katelynne Craft and Erik Craft; and a special friend, Elizabeth Moorhead.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be in the adjoining memorial park.

Elvira M. Gadaleta
Elvira M. Gadaleta of Smyrna passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007. She was 89.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vito Gadaleta, and a son, Charles Lobosco.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte (Rudolph) Caronia; three grandchildren, Daniel, Celeste and Charles; three great-grandchildren; the Gadaleta family who lovingly looked after her and her husband after they moved to Delaware; a nephew and a niece-in-law, Cosmo and Kathy Gadaleta of Middletown; a brother and a sister-in-law, Michele and Angela Gadaleta of Smyrna; a sister-in-law, Marie Gadaleta of New Jersey; a host of nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews who will miss her.

Mass of Christian burial was Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Polycarp Church, Smyrna.

Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.

Shirley M. Dale Legg
Shirley M. Dale Legg of Wilmington died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House. She was 78.

Mrs. Legg was born June 13, 1928, in LaCrosse, Wis., daughter of the late Carl and Ava Cordell Nonstad.

She was employed with the DuPont Company for 35 years, retiring as a securities assistant in 1984.

In her leisure time, Mrs. Legg greatly enjoyed reading, cross stitching and crocheting. She also looked forward to sharing meals with her friends at Mary s Country Kitchen in Newport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Vaughn T. Dale Sr., in 1973; and her second husband, John A. Legg, in 1996.

She survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Ellen V. and Larry Hamby of Middletown and Susan H. Davis of Newark; a stepson and a stepdaughter-in-law, Vaughn T. Jr. and Jeanette Dale of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Jacob Lee Ray, Larkin Ray and Wisteria Davis.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be private.

David Joseph Pop Pop Tilla Mantyla
David Joseph Pop Pop Tilla Mantyla of Hockessin passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, surrounded by his loving family. He was 74.

Mr. Mantyla was born on Feb. 15, 1932, in New Hyde Park, N.Y., son of the late Anna and Thomas Mantyla.

He was a 1950 graduate of Wilmington High School.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he received a degree in chemistry from the University of Delaware, in 1976.

His entire career was with the DuPont Company. He retired in 1984 after working for 31 years.

Mr. Mantyla was an avid card player, an active member with the Delaware Singles and a long-time social member of the DuPont Country Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David T. Mantyla.

He is survived by two daughters, Ann Weinacht of Pike Creek and Alice Leighton of Newark; their mother, Doris Mantyla of Lewes; a stepson, Lance Marvel of Lewes; a stepdaughter, Leslie Spinella of Delaware City; his brother and best friend and a sister-in-law, Thomas and Connie Mantyla of Wilmington; three other brothers and three sisters-in-law, Bill and Rita Mantyla of Wilmington, Elliott and Kitty Scocas of Hockessin and Albert and Dixie Scocas of Elkton, Md.; a devoted sister, Irene Murray of Lewes; a granddaughter, Michelle Weinacht; a grandson, Brian Leighton; Lisa Richardson, Jennifer Cipolla, Bobby Wulkewicz, Angela Spinella and Rachel Spinella; and many nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Burial was in Hockessin Friends Cemetery.

James Everett Martin Sr.
James Everett Martin Sr. of Smyrna passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at his home, with his loving family by his side. He was 85.

Mr. Martin was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Virginia, son of the late Irvin Elmon and Effie Izzella (Palmer) Martin.

He retired from Carpenters Local Union 626 after 50 years of service.

He was an avid gardener who enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, which he shared with his many neighbors and friends. He was a big NASCAR fan and an avid collector of a variety of collectibles. He took great pride in and loved his pick-up truck. Although he enjoyed these many passions, he shared his greatest love with his family, including his family at church. His many talents as a carpenter lead him to be instrumental in constructing the initial building of the Townsend Free Will Baptist Church. His great sense of humor and love for life will be missed by his many dear family and friends. He was a great humanitarian with a big heart.

Mr. Martin was a long-standing member of the Townsend Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nadine Perry and Louise Martin; a brother, Eugene Martin; a loving grandson, Timothy Figgatt; a darling granddaughter; and a very special niece, Frances Tweed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy L. (Watters) Martin of Smyrna; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carolyn and Keith Figgatt of Frederick, Md., Peggy Ducote and her companion, John, of Middletown, Judy and Steve Ludwig of Berlin, N.J., and Charlotte and Doug Cameron of Middletown; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James E. Butch Martin Jr. and his companion, Liz, of Smyrna, and Tom and Joyce Martin of Middletown; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers; four sisters; and a very special and dear friend, Mr. Morris of Smyrna.

Services were Jan. 13 at the Townsend Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn.

Ryan Hunter Short
Ryan Hunter Short of Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007. He was 5.

He was born July 22, 2001, in Wilson, N.C., and had lived in North Carolina, Townsend, and, most recently, in Alaska.

Ryan was a kindergarten student who enjoyed four-wheelers and trucks, all sports, including indoor soccer, T-ball, golf and playing outdoors. He loved super heroes, especially Superman and Batman. Ryan will be remembered as a funny and happy child with a wide-open personality.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert H. Short Sr., in 1994.

He is survived by his parents, Richard H. and Lori Short of Anchorage; his maternal grandparents, Chris and Connie Sandberg of St. Joseph, Mass., and David and Kay Riggle of Eldorado, Kan.; his paternal grandmother, Linda Short of Townsend; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were Jan. 12 at the Freewill Baptist Church, Townsend.

Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Robert William Phillips Jr.
Robert William Phillips Jr. of North Wilkesboro, N.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, after a 10-year illness at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. He was 50.

Mr. Phillips was born March 29, 1956, in Elkton, Md., son of the late Robert William Phillips Sr. and Phyllis Ann Petts Phillips Hutchison.

He served the U.S. during the Vietnam War era as a sergeant with the Special Forces and an Army Ranger.

Later, he was a sergeant with the Delaware Correctional Center, a self-employed private investigator and owned a home improvement business. He also was a tattoo artist.

Mr. Phillips was a member of ABATE, a veterans motorcycle organization, and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by a son, Robert William Phillips III of Thurmond, N.C., and Jason Phillips of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Dawn Phillips of the U.S. Army in England; three sisters, Beverly Merkel of Spartanburg, S.C., Lisa VanHorn of Smyrna and Hope Sheets of Roaring River; and a stepsister, Carol Matir of Trap Hill.

Services will be noon Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be at a later date in Forest Cemetery in Middletown.

Memorials may be made to the Robert William Phillips III Scholarship Fund, Yadkin Valley Bank, P.O. Box 276, Jonesville, N.C. 28642.

Herbert Dick Worsley
Herbert Dick Worsley of Newark passed away Jan. 7, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 73.

Mr. Worsley was born March 1, 1933, in Castleford, West Yorkshire, England, son of the late Herbert and Lilly Greenhauge Worsley.

He was a member of the Royal Air Force. An owner and trainer of thoroughbred horses, he also was a jockey in both flat and steeplechase racing. In addition to his love of horses, he was known as a lover of all animals. He was an avid runner and participated in various marathons. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. The family is most grateful to Mr. and Mrs. James Barnes for all their consideration and help.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Worsley, in 2000; and a brother, Derek Worsley, in 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Sally J. Worsley of Newark; three sons, Sean Anthony Worsley and his wife, Joyce, of Newark, Michael Anthony Worsley of Newark and David Charles Luckett and his family, of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter and a son-in-law, Rose Marie and Martin Riley of Bear; five grandsons, Stephen M.T. Worsley of Warwick, Md., Brendan Worsley and Brain Worsley, both of New Castle, Mickey Worsley of Newark and Salvatore Dominick; seven brothers, Neville Worsley, Michael Mick Worsley, Barry Worsley, Roy Worsley, Harry Worsley, Jack Worsley and Robert Worsley, all of Castleford, England; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were Jan. 11 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., Chesapeake City, Md.

Burial was private.

Dorothy B. Davis

Dorothy B. Davis of Wilmington died Tuesday, January 8, 2002. She was 82.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She was a longtime member of St. Mark s

United Methodist Church in Stanton. She had worked in the clerical department at Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Delaware. Mrs. Davis received a degree in fashion design from the Pratt Art Institute in New York. Her many interests include sewing, photography, fishing and collecting family mementos; she was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband of 44 years, Edward S. Davis; three daughters, Joan B. Tuttle (Don) of Horse Shoe, N.C., Barbara B. Wingard (Mike) of Baton Rouge, La., and Karen D. Lathrop (Chet) of Middletown; a sister, Elizabeth Schroeder of Greenville; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer and Will Tuttle, Sarah and Matthew Wingard, and June, Eileen, Gwyneth and Blythe Lathrop.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall Barnes.

Services were held Jan. 12, at St. Mark s United Methodist Church, Stanton.

Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Road, Newark DE 19713.

Martha M. Durand

Martha M. Durand of Smyrna died Wednesday, January 9, 2002 in the Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was 83.

Mrs. Durand served her country in the WAC stationed at the New Castle Air Force base.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Lawrence Hilton; a sister; six brothers; and a grandson.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Charles B. Durand, Sr.; five children, Georgianna White (Bill) of New Castle, Charmain Pardee (Tom) of Harrington, Linda Cebenka (Andy) of Middletown and Charles B. Durand, Jr. (Kathy) and Melvin Durand, Sr. (Linda), both of Smyrna; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 14 at the Gebhart Funeral Home, Olde New Castle.

Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.
