John G. ‘Gray’ Staib Sr.
John G. “Gray” Staib Sr. of Middletown passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the Christiana Hospital, Newark, with his loving family at his side. He was 52.

Mr. Staib was born and raised in north Wilmington, son of Ruth Magness-Plowman and the late J. George Staib.

He was a 1972 graduate of Concord High School.

Mr. Staib made Middletown his home for the last nine years in his dream home that he built himself.

He worked as a Chemical Technician for the DuPont Company for the last 28 years. He also owned his own business, “Gray’s Construction,” through which he was able to do what he really loved to do.

Mr. Staib was especially proud to have been a family man whose life evolved around his love for his family. He was a very special person who loved and was loved by all. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Deborah A. Staib; his mother, Ruth Magness-Plowman of Warwick, Md.; two sons, John G. Staib Jr. of Odessa and Christopher R. Staib of Wilmington; a daughter, Nicole L. Staib of Bear; a stepdaughter, Kristina F. Williams of Middletown; a brother, George Wayne Staib of Wilmington; two sisters, Carolyn Evans of Port Herman, Md., and Margaret L. Jeanes of Warwick; four very special grandchildren, Victoria, Jordan, Taylor and Hailey; a brother-in-law Jack Bodzo of Middletown, with whom he had a special relationship and who will miss him greatly; and an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Saturday at Beeson Funeral Home of Newark.

Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The American Diabetes Association, 100 West 10th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

Gladys V. ‘Pat’ Dinger
Gladys V. “Pat” Dinger of Smyrna, formerly of DuBois, Pa., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at her home. She was 97.

She was born in Weedville, Pa., daughter of the late William and Catherine Rees Patterson.

Mrs. Dinger was a homemaker who loved bingo, traveling and reading. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph S. Dinger, in 1973; and by a grandson, James Daniel Wingard, in 1979.

She is survived by two daughters, Joline M. Wingard of Smyrna and Lynne A. Dirks of Alvin, Texas; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services and interment were private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice Inc., 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Claudia M. Krapf
Claudia M. Krapf, formerly of New Castle and Miami, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Churchman Village, Newark. She was 88.

Mrs. Krapf was born March 22, 1918, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Sanford and Constance Reese Smith.

She worked as a bookkeeper in the local railroad system for several years. A railroad colleague introduced her to Harry D. Krapf, whom she married in 1944. She was later employed with the DuPont Company.

She was a talented homemaker and cook and was well-known for her delicious cookies. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and flower arranging and was an avid reader.

Mrs. Krapf was active in Delaware politics and volunteered as a poll worker for many years. She also served as a treasurer of the Jefferson Farms Civic Association. She was a former member of the Cathedral Church of St. John in Wilmington, a member of the Church of the Nativity in New Castle and a former member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Miami, where she was active in the ladies’ group and helped to craft many items for church bazaars.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry, in 1990; and a sister, Connie Smith, in 1982.

She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, James K. and Cherisse Krapf of Miami; a daughter and a son-in-law, Connie L. and Ray Conner of Middletown; two grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, John and Colleen Conner and Ryan and Melissa Conner; two granddaughters, Erika Krapf and Emily Krapf; and three great-grandchildren.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Churchman Village for their many kindnesses to Mrs. Krapf during her stay there.

Services were Friday at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home.

Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.

Roberta Jeanette Harvey
Roberta Jeanette Harvey of Middletown died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at her home. She was 77.

Mrs. Harvey and her husband owned and operated the Books and Tobacco store in the Mill Creek Shopping Center, from where she retired in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Joseph Harvey, in December 1983.

She is survived by four daughters and four sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Russ Melrath of Elkton, Md., and Bethany Beach, Diane and Bernie Janoson of Indianapolis, Ind., Evelyn and Donald Russell of Bear and Eileen and William Wilson of Middletown; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Monica Harvey of Wilmington; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn and Lewis Stiles of Pennsville, N.J., and Elizabeth Harwell of Wilmington; and six grandchildren, Jason Melrath, Jared Melrath, Sara Russell, DJ Russell, Elizabeth Janoson and Andrew Janoson.

Services were Saturday at the Doherty Funeral Home in Pike Creek.

Burial was in All Saints Cemetery.

Albert ‘Butch’ Kist Jr.
Albert “Butch” Kist Jr. of Ormond Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully Dec. 23, 2006, at home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Kist was born April 24, 1947, in Elkton, Md., son of Rose Kist and the late Albert Kist.

He moved from Bear to the Ormond Beach area in 1978.

He was a painter, a teacher and jack-of-all-trades.

Mr. Kist was a great husband, father and grandfather. He was a good friend to all who knew him and will be sorely missed. He was one of a kind, creative and gifted. He enjoyed boating, skiing, watching the Sci-Fi channel, attending taekwondo events with his daughters and grandchildren and, most of all, spending quality time with his family. His generosity was his most endearing quality.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sharon; three daughters, Lisa Kist and Tara Kist both of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Shirley Ann of Delaware; two sons, Casey Coleman of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Dwain Coleman of Delaware; two grandchildren who idolized him, Steven Stewart II and Haley Stewart, both of Ormond Beach; his mother, Rose Kist of Northeast, Md.; and his mother-in-law, Rene Lovejoy of Bear.

Services were Saturday at Greenwood Estates.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 1021 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.

Mary Helen Megonigal
Mary Helen Megonigal if Daytona Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at Indigo Manor, Daytona Beach. She was 89.

Mrs. Megonigal was born in Kingston, Md.

She moved from Wilmington to Florida in Dec. 2005

She worked as a registered nurse for 32 years at Wilmington Medical Center before retiring.

Mrs. Megonigal was an avid reader, loved James Michener novels and took care of her family.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Walter F. Megonigal Jr. of Mathews, Va., and Robert D. Megonigal of Middletown; a daughter, Sally Carlson-Ditmyer of Port Orange, Fla.; two grandchildren, Joel T. Carlson and Darcy F. Megonigal; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie Carlson and Jack Megonigal; and a sister, Betty Darby-Crocket of Atlantic, Va.

Arrangements by Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

Thelma Coffin Selby
Thelma Coffin Selby of Lancaster, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at her home. She was 87.

Mrs. Selby was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Selby, in 2005.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Kelly Elkins of Soquel, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Doris Wilson of Clarksdale, Ariz.; a nephew, Clark C. Elliott of Minocqua, Wisc.; and a niece, Lynn McGowan of Middletown.

Services were Friday, Dec. 29, at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, Lancaster

Burial was in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Eugene H. Derrickson
Eugene H. Derrickson of Middletown, formerly of Claymont, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 64.

Mr. Derrickson retired from the State of Delaware, where he worked for the Department of Transportation, after 20 years of dedicated service. He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Derrickson belonged to the Claymont Volunteer Fire Company and was a member of Oriental Masonic Lodge No. 27. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and coaching children in Little League and youth football. He was thought of as a mentor to the children he knew and coached.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Patricia G. (Patterson) Derrickson; sons, Christopher Derrickson of Claymont and Patrick S. Patterson and his wife, Shellee, of Middletown; daughters, Carol J. Derrickson-Case and her husband, William, of Claymont, and Susan J. Steen and her husband, Philip, of Middletown; brother, Edward Derrickson of Massachusettes; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Jan. 3 at the Gebhart Funeral Home. Burial was in the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Bobby G. Harvey
Bobby G. Harvey of Rock Hall, Md., died suddenly at his home on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006. He was 61.

Mr. Harvey was born in Rock Hall, the son of Bill and Jean Creighton, of Worton, Md. Mr. Harvey was a 1963 graduate of Rock Hall High School. He then worked for C&P, Bell Atlantic and Verizon for 39 years until his retirement as an operations manager for the Eastern Shore and Delaware. After his retirement, Mr. Harvey enjoyed helping Herman Hill and son on their farms and helping Capt. Lenny Fletcher onboard the Fishing Party II as his mate. Mr. Harvey was involved in community activities by serving on the Kent County Planning and Zoning Appeals Board, as well as coaching youth baseball with the Rock Hall Orioles.

In his earlier years, Mr. Harvey enjoyed playing softball in the Kent league. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. Mr. Harvey loved riding his Harley Davidson and his special companion Emma.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Harvey is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandy Harvey; two daughters, Shelley Hillyer and her husband, Ed, of Tolchester, Md., and Courtney Chipouras and her husband, Steven, of Middletown; two grandsons, Myles and Ben Hillyer of Tolchester; a sister, Ruth Creighton of Worton; and a brother, Jerry Creighton of Rock Hall.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 3 in the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, Md. Interment was held in the Wesley Cemetery, Rock Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in his memory to the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Co. and Ambulance Fund, PO Box 577, Rock Hall, MD 21661.

Adam A. Skowronski
Adam A. Skowronski of Mount Pleasant, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at IHS of Greater Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Pa. He was 82.

Mr. Skowronski was born on Nov. 3, 1924, in Plains, Pa., son of the late Stanley and Ann Wrobleski Skrowronski.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the Bronze Star.

He was employed as a truck driver with Helms Trucking Company prior to retirement.

Mr. Skowronski was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Calumet and the VFW Post 3368, the American Legion Post 446, both in Mt. Pleasant, LOOM of Youngwood, the Norvelt Fireman’s Club, the Polish Falcon’s Nest 147, the American Legion Post 981 of South Greensburg, the Slavonic American Home Association of United, the AMVETS Home Association, the Hempfield Hunt Club, the Western PA Fireman’s Association and the Westmoreland Co. Firemen’s Association. He was a supporter of the National Law Enforcement officer’s Memorial Fund. He was a life member of the AMVETS Post 94 and the Hecla Sportsmen’s Club. He also was a member of the Norvelt Volunteer Fire Department for many years, where he served as past president and steward. He was a past manager at the Roosevelt Hall in Norvelt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Skowronski.

He is survived by a sister, Bertha A. Lewis of Smyrna; and three close friends, Dottie Monticue of Mt. Pleasant and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cibulas of Norvelt , Pa.

Services were Friday, Dec. 29 at St. Stanislaus Church, Calumet, Pa.

Entombment with full military honors was in Middle Presbyterian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township.

Jerome “Jerry” Claude Austin

Jerome Claude Austin of Townsend died Monday, December 24, 2001 at home. He was 61.

Mr. Austin was born in Middletown on Sept. 21, 1940 to the late Claude Warren Austin and Helen Tush Austin. He was a lifelong resident of the M.O.T. area being raised on his parents’ farm, the Joy Run Farm, at Summit Bridge. He graduated from Middletown High School and attended the University of Delaware.

Mr. Austin was the owner/operator of Pleasant Hill Liquors in Odessa from 1965 to 1985 and then worked as a liquor store manager for Larry’s Liquors at Garrison Lake until becoming ill.

He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Middletown. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed trivia, the Civil War and cats.

Mr. Austin in survived by his wife of 11 years, Rosalie Austin; a son, Dane J. Austin (Kara) of Clayton; two daughters, Sheri Austin of Sandtown and Stephanie McLane of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, June Harris (Ebb) of Palm Springs, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Shane Austin, Shanyn Austin and Alyssa Austin.

Services were held Dec. 29 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Middletown.

Interment was in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

Thomas Gary Blevins

Thomas Gary Blevins of Smyrna died Friday December 21, 2001 from cancer. He was 59.

Mr. Blevins was born on Sept. 3, 1942 to James and Lillian Blevins. He was educated in the Smyrna and Middletown area and was a graduate of Smyrna High School. In 1963, he married Barbara E. Clough. Mr. Blevins was employed with the former Smyrna A&P and as produce manager at Pathmark before founding Gary Blevins General Contractor and Blevins Farm Market.

He was an owner of standard-bred racehorses and a member of the United States Trotting Association and the Delaware Standard-bred Owners Association.

He also owned several rental properties in the area. He was a past president of the Smyrna-Clayton Jaycees and a former member of the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by his father, James T. Blevins; and a brother-in-law, Bruce E. Clough.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara E. Blevins; two daughters, Jacquelyn E. Blevins of Smyrna and B. Joanne Gannon (Edwin “Jay”) of Church Hill, Md.; his mother, Lillian Blevins of Smyrna; a brother, Richard (Linda) Blevins of Smyrna; his in-laws, Mickey and Elva Clough of Dover; and a niece and nephew, Donna Godwin and Jeffrey Blevins.

Graveside services were held Dec. 24 in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

C. Curtis Blome

C. Curtis Blome of Wilmington died Sunday, December 23, 2001. He was 81.

Mr. Blome was born in Middletown on Sept. 21, 1920 to the late Frederick and Mabel (Cosden) Blome. He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII as a Staff Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals.

He was employed with Delmarva Power and Light, now Conectiv, for 35 years, retiring in 1983 as a member of the engineering department. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Blome was a former member of the Delmarva Sportsman Club and the National Rifle Association and he enjoyed archery and was a skilled painter and wood working craftsman.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon A. Blome, in 1953; and a sister, Evelyn Brown.

Mr. Blome is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Grace Poppiti; two sons, Frederick J. Blome (Julia) of West Grove, Pa. and Paul S. Blome of Wilmington; three sisters, Catherine Parkins of W. Va., Bernice Ewing of Ariz. and Louise Lawrence of Middletown; and five grandchildren, Jonathan, Jessica, David, Andrea and Mark.

Services were held Dec. 26 at Corpus Christi R.C. Church, Elsmere.

Interment was in Old St. Anne’s Cemetery, Middletown.

Evelyn J. Dutcher

Evelyn J. Dutcher of Newark, formerly of Wilmington, died Saturday, December 22, 2001 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 95.

Mrs. Dutcher, a homemaker, was an active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church for many years. She had been a member of the Junior Board of Riverside Hospital, Wilmington, and a Brownie Scout leader during her daughter’s youth. Prior to moving in Sept. 2001, Mrs. Dutcher had been at Foulk Manor North longer than any other resident or staff member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Dutcher, in 1974.

She is survived by a daughter, Dixie Scocas (Albert) of Elkton, Md.; and two grandchildren, Evelyn Nestlerode (Joe) of Townsend and Joseph Scocas (Holly) of Newark.

Services were held Dec. 28 at the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

Interment was in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 1304 North Rodney Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
