John Wilmer Fennemore, Jr. of Smyrna died Tuesday, December 25, 2001 at home. He was 79.
Mr. Fennemore was born in Townsend March 6, 1922 to the late John Wilmer Fennemore, Sr. and Margaret Townsend Fennemore.
He attended Townsend School to the eighth grade and graduated from Middletown High School in 1940. He then took courses at Beacom College, Wilmington.
He worked for the DuPont Company before entering the Army in 1942. He was a machine gunner in the 305th Infantry, 77 Division. He received the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbons and was also awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Fennemore served as chief deputy sheriff for New Castle County for several years under G. Lester Cleaver.
He began farming in 1950 and operated a dairy farm in Middletown along with other farms in the area until his retirement in 1989 after which he moved to Smyrna. He served on the Middletown School Board for 12 years.
Mr. Fennemore is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Cleaver Fennemore; a son, Glenn Fennemore (Denise) of Clayton; two daughters, Linda F. Crain of Middletown and Susan Nickerson (Richard) of Smyrna; a sister, Maryetta F. Carey of Townsend; a brother, Jack Fennemore of Felton; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his devoted dog, Lady.
Services were held Dec. 29 at St. Peters Episcopal Church, Smyrna.
Burial was private.

Alice May Garneski
Alice May Garneski of Long Neck, formerly of New Castle, died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at home. She was 70.
She was born in Delaware City to the late Anthony and Alice Gardiner Costango.
She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Francis X. Frank Garneski; four daughters, Stella Callahan (Charles), Linda Gretchen, Sarah Bleyer (Francis), all of New Castle and Theresa Wierzbicki of Viola; two sons, Francis X. Garneski, Jr. (Karen) of Newark and Philip Garneski of Long Neck; three brothers, Frank Costango of Smyrna and Robert Costango and Charles Costango, both of Fla.; six sisters, Ruth Carrafa and Theresa Costango, both of Ga., Rose Reifsnyder of Pa., Anne Tabor of W. Va., Barbara Costango of Wilmington and Mary June Patterson of Delaware City; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandsons.
Services and interment were private.

Alan Ginn
Alan Ginn of Cecilton, Md. died Monday, December 24, 2001 at Laurelwood Nursing Center, Elkton, Md. He was 87.
Mr. Ginn was born in Townsend on the Levels at his father s farm. He retired in 1974 after 25 years of service at General Motors Corp.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Inez Craig, in 1969; and a brother, Fred A. Ginn.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Katherine W. Ginn; two sons, Ronald Ginn of Kennedyville, Md. and Craig Ginn of Earleville, Md.; two brothers, George Tweety Ginn of Chesapeake City, Md. and Clifton L. Ginn of Wayne, Neb.; a sister, Marion Brown of Elkton, Md.; four step grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 29 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Burial was private.
William Allen Hearne
William Allen Hearne of Fieldsboro died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at Millcroft Care Center, Newark. He was 73.
Mr. Hearne was an Army veteran of WWII and had owned and operated Fieldsboro Auto from 1958 until his retirement. He also owned a Mini Warehouse Rental Business and several farms in the M.O.T. area.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne E. Betty Hearne, in 1993.
He is survived by a son, William J. Hearne (Sandy) of Townsend; and three grandsons, Jacob, Will and Daniel.
Services were held Dec. 31 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Burial was in Old Drawyers Cemetery, north of Odessa.
Hattie M. Lattomus
Hattie M. Lattomus, formerly of Townsend, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001 in Lewes. She was 84.
Mrs. Lattomus was a homemaker and member of the M.O.T. Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Francis Frank Lattomus, in 1989; and a son, Robert Lattomus, in 1988.
She is survived by a son, John F. Lattomus, Jr. (Marie) of Georgetown; a brother, Alfred Zaborowski of Wilmington; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a great great grandson.
Services were held Dec. 28 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Burial was in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

Mary P. Nardo
Mary P. Nardo of New Castle died Sunday, December 23, 2001. She was 77.
Mrs. Nardo had worked for many years as a clerk for Goodwill Industries. She also worked at the family business, Lou Nardo s Sub Shop, with her husband for 13 years. She enjoyed walks in Battery Park, and had a strong interest in bowling and ceramics.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Louis D. Nardo; three children, Louis D. Nardo, Jr. of Townsend, Dennis Nardo of Middletown and Patricia Kelly of Bear; two brothers, Dennis McMullan and Patrick McMullan, both of England; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 28 at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Wilmington.
Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Doris June Newell
Doris Newell of Dover died Saturday, December 22, 2001 at Kent General Hospital Bay Health, Milford. She was 73.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Jan. 11, 1928 to the late Oliver and Nettie (Townsend) Colbourne. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Harry D. Newell; a son, Joe H. Newell of Norwich, Conn.; a daughter, Tamara Newell-Attix of Townsend; a brother, James Colbourne of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Lorraine Poore of Wilmington; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 27 at Trader Funeral Home, Dover.

Wilma Ida Sage
Wilma Ida Sage of Newark died Tuesday, December 25, 2001 at home. She was 72.
Mrs. Sage was a devoted wife and mother and in her spare time enjoyed quilting, crocheting and traveling.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Leonard Sage and Larry Giles Sage; and a brother, Kenneth Spaur.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James C. Sage; three sons, James Leon Sage of Pittsburgh, Pa., Leroy Sage of Newark and Luther Matthew Sage of Mount Carmel, Pa.; four daughters, Linda Marie Cannon of Newark, Lois Ann Haley of Middletown, Lorrie Jane Kilpatrick of New Castle and Wilma Louise Poe of Mount Carmel, Pa.; five sisters, Helen Clifton of New Castle, Phyllis Shaw of Sutton, W. Va., Dorothy Wood of Republican, Mich., Norma Jean Harrison of New Castle and Emma Wilson of Mount Morris, Mich.; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 29 at Gebhart Funeral Home, New Castle.
Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.
Frances E. Zanzi
Frances E. Zanzi, formerly of Stanton, Va., died Saturday, December 22, 2001 at Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was 88.
Mrs. Zanzi was born in Petersburg, Va. and was a retired hairdresser.
She was preceded in death by her husband, August Zanzi.
She is survived by a brother, Julius Henry Dortch of Concord, Va.; a sister, Evelyn Freeman of Smyrna; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 27 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Burial was private.
Raymond Dwight Lowe
Mr. Lowe worked as a security guard at Motiva in Delaware City. He was a member of the Kent Christian Pentacostal Church of Dover.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Lowe.
He is survived by two daughters, Heather and Tara Lowe, both of Wilmington, his former wife Linda Lowe, his mother and his stepfather, Ethel and Dennis Lavender of Blackbird, and stepbrother Larry Lavender.
Services were held on Dec. 31 in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Richard J. Hamilton
Beloved father of Leigh M. of New Castle and devoted son of John A. and Eleanor N. Hamilton of Havertown, Pa. He is also survived by his brother, David J. of Tenn.; niece, Sara A.; nephew, Sean C.; and his caregiver, Deidre Pruitt.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Sproul & Lawrence Rds., Broomall, Pa. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery.

Elizabeth Oakes Ward
Betty was a homemaker and enjoyed following sports. She was a longtime fan of Blue Hen Football and especially the career of Rich Gannon. She participated in the Polar Bear Plunge in Rehoboth Beach for the past three years to help support Delaware Special Olympics. She also participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Middletown as a member of the "Cherry Grove Gang.
Betty was a charter member of the Sassafras Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, she was also actively involved with her daughters in the Middletown Pony Club and the Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader in Wilmington. Betty loved animals, traveling, playing bingo and spending time with her family and friends. Her gentle nature and generosity of spirit will be long remembered and sorely missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Ward in 1998 and two brothers, John P. and J. Lane Oakes.
She is survived by her four daughters, Elizabeth Jane Ward of Olde Hope Farm, Earleville, Md., Nancy A. Murray and her husband, Daniel of Rising Sun, Md., Mary Ward-Hutchison and her husband, Rob, of Middletown, Cathy Ward McNatt and her husband, Harvey Mickey of Port Deposit, Md.; nine grandchildren, Carrie M. Ferguson, David W. Ferguson, John Patrick J.P. Henry, James Christopher J.C. Henry, Zachary J. Sheats, Bryan A. Kalmbacher, Calley E. Sheats, Owen Ward Hutchison, William Cole Hutchison; and a great grandson, C. Bailey Peters.
Services were held at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.

Services were held Dec. 28 at Faries Funeral Home, 1250 S. Governors Ave, Dover.
Denise M. Straub
Denise worked for Artesian Water Company for 17 years. She enjoyed country line dancing, camping and trips to Disney World.
She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Rick Straub; her mother, Brenda Kolb of Newark, her father and stepmother, Stephen and Nancy Doran of Boothwyn, Pa.; her stepfather, Thomas Kolb of Bear, her in-laws, Jim and Pat Straub of Longneck, her maternal grandparents, Howard and Marion Heacock of Wilmington, her paternal grandmother, Betty Pfeiffer of Millsboro; two brothers, Sean Doran of Boothwyn, Pa. and Jared Kolb of Bear, her sister, Heather Ray of Boothwyn, Pa.; sister-in-law, Tricia Godwin of Newark, and brother-in-law, Jim Straub and his wife, Cathy of Middletown. Denise is also survived by four nephews and one niece.
Services were held at the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 28 in Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark. Burial was held in All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Hwy.

Marian Jane Walther
Mrs. Walther was born in Seaford, and had been the president of the Cedar Run Golf Course in Bear since 1995. She enjoyed and loved her grandchildren.
Mrs. Walther is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Emile "Sonny" J. Walther; sons, John E. and his wife, Cynthia of Clayton, Lawrence D. and his wife, Pamela of Bear, James E. and his wife, Connie of Warwick, Md.; loving daughter, Barbara Ann who lived at home; grandchildren, Tammy, Jeanette, Melissa, Larry, Jr., Amanda, Joseph, Emily, Anna, Samantha, John, Jr. and Olivia; great grandchildren, Nicholas and Colin.
Services were held at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Pky., New Castle, on Saturday, Dec. 28. Interment was at St. George's Cemetery, St. George's.
