Doris M. Newman
Doris M. Newman, of Middletown, passed away at home on October 6, 2002.

Services were held Oct. 11 at Cyprian Roman Catholic Church in Philadelphia.

Arrangements were by Hawkins Funeral Home.

Guy R. Root
Guy R. Root of Middletown died peacefully at Christiana Hospital Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was 49.

Guy passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be remembered by his engaging and vibrant personality. He was born in Sleepy Eye, Minn. He attended schools in Morgan, Minn., and graduated from St. Cloud State University. He was employed by Schwan s Consumer Brands for 20 years and was the Customer Operations Manager. Guy was a devoted family man and enjoyed working in his yard, NASCAR, and playing golf.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pam; his daughter, Shelby, and son, Dustin, both at home; his parents, Richard and Mickey Root, of Morgan, Minn.; sisters, Robin Maurer and Connie Bohn, and their families, all of Minnesota; his in-laws, Bob and Lois Snodgrass, of Florida; and sisters-in-law, Debbie Berg of Minnesota, and Cindy Mand, of Wisconsin; and many friends.

A celebration of Guy's life was held Oct. 8 in St. Rose of Lima RC Church, Chesapeake City, Md. Interment was private.

Hilda E. Records
Hilda E. Records of Main Towers in Newark passed away suddenly at her home Monday, Oct. 3, 2005. She was 95.

Mrs. Records was born in Smyrna Feb. 14, 1910, daughter of the late William and Clara David Webb. She was employed at Continental Diamond Fiber and retired from the University of Delaware Food Services Department. She was an avid University of Delaware and Philadelphia Eagles football fan. She was a talented crocheter, using her talents crocheting lap blankets for patients at area hospitals and baby hats and blankets for premature infants. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Records, who passed away in 1983; and her grandson, Michael Wilson, who passed away in 1981.

She is survived by her son, William C. Records, and his wife Virginia, of Middletown; two daughters, Doris A. Wilson, and her husband Wayne, of Newark, and Claudia E. Groff, and her husband Raymond, of Glasgow; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Rogers of Georgetown, and Margaret Callaway of Laurel.

A funeral service was held Oct. 7 at the R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, Newark. Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Charitable contributions in Hilda's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o the funeral home.

Martha B. Hammond
Martha B. Hammond of Middletown passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was 90.

Mrs. Hammond loved working on the farm and she also loved all kinds of animals. She loved being outside and seldom missed a day walking down Middletown's Broad Street. She was also a wonderful cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Hammond Sr.; and her son, John G. Jr.; her parents; and 11 brothers and sisters. Martha is survived by a nephew, George Alexander of Clayton; two nieces, Ruth Ann Alford of Townsend and Bessie Pepper of Georgetown; and several grandnieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Oct. 6 in Old Drawyers Cemetery, north of Odessa.

George Griffiths
George Griffiths of Newark died peacefully at home Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 86.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Feb. 14, 1919, Mr. Griffiths was the son of the late George Griffiths and Della Powell Griffiths. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he entered military service at 17 and served his country proudly for 20 years. In civilian life, Mr. Griffiths was employed as a quality control supervisor with Motor Wheel in Newark, retiring after 24 years of service. He later worked for Winterthur Museum and Library. Active in his community, Mr. Griffiths was a member of both the Newark Lions and Kiwanis clubs, and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. A kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Josephine Barnic Griffiths; their six children, Barry Griffiths and his wife Mary Ann, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Stan Griffiths and his wife Karen, of Wilmington, Cindy Dodge and her companion Michael Severin, of Sonora, Ruth Schaen and her husband Rick, of Newark, Jan Desmond and her husband Martin, of Middletown and Stephanie Gregg of Newark; a brother, Ray Griffiths and his wife Liz, of Newark; two sisters, Helen Cooke of Covington, Va., and Mary Hoover of Ohio; and nine grandchildren, who enjoyed his company and delighted in listening to his many stories.

A committal service was held Oct. 7 in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, c/o Christiana Care Foundation, P.O. Box 1668, Wilmington, DE 19899.

Donald J. Napolski
Donald J. Nipper Napolski, loving father, grandfather, and brother, of Bear, passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2005. He was 67.

Donald was born in Wilmington, son of the late Boles and Elva Napolski. He graduated from P.S. duPont High School and had been a lifelong resident of Delaware. Donald served in the Delaware Army National Guard. Donald was a truck driver and mechanic. He was employed by Mumford and Miller and Atlantic Aviation for many years. He was a member of the NRA and he enjoyed his special "hang out" at the Red Lion Inn called the soup kitchen. He also enjoyed crabbing, fishing, hunting, and collecting trucker hats.

Donald's beloved wife Betty J. Napolski, passed away in 1997. He will be sadly missed by his son, Rick Napolski and his wife Kathy, of North East, Md.; grandchildren, Jessica Napolski and Natalie Napolski; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Day of Delaware City. Donald was also predeceased by his son, Steve Napolski, in 2001; and his sister, Jeanette Zeches.

A funeral service was held Oct. 7. Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In memory of Donald, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.

Neil W. Piechowski
Neil W. Piechowski of Newark passed away Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005. He was 60.

Neil was a power mechanic with the DuPont Co. Performance Elastomers in Newark for 25 years.

Neil was preceded in death by his grandson, Josh. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary S. Piechowski; three daughters, Kathy St. Amand and her husband Luke, of Newark, Carol Jones and her husband Mike, of Daphne, Ala., and Lisa Dorrell and her husband Chris, of Delaware City; two sisters, Carolyn Belile and her husband Ronnie, of Wilmington, and Judith Jennings and her husband Charles, of New Castle; four grandchildren, Erika, Christopher, Heather and Thomas; and three step-grandchildren, Bernie, Shawn and Kaylee.

A funeral service was held Oct. 7 at the McCrery Memorial. Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Thelma S. Levinson
Thelma Schagrin Levinson, formerly of Wilmington and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away Oct. 8, 2005, at Crosslands of Kennett Square, Pa., where she had been a resident for two years.

Thelma, or Teddy, as she was known by her family and friends, was born in Middletown in 1923 and attended grade school there. She graduated from Friends School in Wilmington and Gettysburg College. She was actively involved in ORT, the AFS Committee at Mt. Pleasant High School, The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom of Wilmington and was a founding member of the M.O.T. Senior Center in Middletown.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Laura Schagrin, and her husband of 56 years, Milton, who passed away in 2003. She is survived by her son Eric and his wife Sue, of Newark, and her daughter Frances and her husband Ron Sullivan, of Kennett Square. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Andrew and Jillian Levinson.

Graveside services were held Oct. 1 in the Jewish Community Cemetery on Foulk Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the M.O.T. Senior Center, 300 S. Scott St., Middletown, DE 19709 or Neighborhood Visiting Nurse Assn., 795 Marshall St., Suite 204, West Chester, PA 19380-4412.

Joseph A. McGonigle Sr.
Joseph A. "Jodey" McGonigle Sr. of Wilmington passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Elsmere, surrounded by his loving family. He was 75.

Joseph was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Bancroft Mill, Schmidt's Baking Co. and St. Ann's Church. He was a member of the Stapler A.A. Club and was an avid baseball fan and player.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Margaret McGonigle; and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alice McGonigle; his children, Joseph A. McGonigle Jr. and his wife Alice, of New Castle, Michael J. McGonigle of Bear, Judith Hazewski and her husband John, of Middletown, and Mark E. McGonigle of Wilmington; his brothers, Edward "Flash" McGonigle, Francis McGonigle and Gerald McGonigle; his sisters, Helen Johnson and Margaret Mullin, all of Wilmington; grandchildren, Douglas, Lauren, Allison, Cathleen, Meghan, Amy and John; and two step-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin and N. Union streets, Wilmington, on Friday, Oct. 14, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Friends may call at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington, on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Harold L. Moyer Sr.
Harold L. Moyer Sr. of Media, Pa. passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2007. He was 82.

Mr. Moyer was born in Anselma, Pa. He was a graduate of Spring City High School and Williamson Trade School in Pennsylvania.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the U.S. S. Cumberland Sound.

Mr. Moyer lived in Aston, Pa., for 50 years before moving to Media two years ago.

He was employed for 38 years as a machinist for Scott Paper before retirement.

A hard worker all of his life and always working on something, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be missed so much by all who knew him.

Mr. Moyer was a member of Mt. Hope Methodist Church for 54 years and also taught Sunday School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie and Levin Moyer; two brothers, Isac and Harry; and a sister, Ethel.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Ruth Eleanor; a daughter, Susan Cox of West Chester, Pa.; two sons, Harold Moyer Jr. of Middletown and Robert Moyer of Chadsford, Pa.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Moyer.

Mildred Roberta Sapp
Mildred Roberta Sapp died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at her daughter s home in Townsend. She was 83.

Mrs. Sapp was born on Aug. 23, 1924, in Magnolia, daughter of the late Robert and Mary Knight.

She lived in the town of Wyoming for more than 40 years.

She was a 1942 graduate of Caesar Rodney High School and a dedicated, lifelong fan of the Riders sports teams.

Mrs. Sapp was a devoted homemaker and loved her family. She will be remembered for her kindness and unselfishness, always putting others first. She was an outstanding cook and there was always room for many guests around her dining table. She loved to share stories with her family and friends. She loved her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a voracious reader who enjoyed a variety of subject areas and she loved animals.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Michael Sapp, in 1987; and a brother, Paul Knight.

She is survived by a sister and a brother-in-law, June and Vic Dankewich of Cumming, Ga.; a daughter and a son-in-law, Mary and Rick Stradley of Townsend; a son, Charles Sapp of Wyoming; and five grandchildren, Michael Stradley, Clay Stradley, Hannah Stradley, Bert Stradley and Schuyler Dickson.

Services will be Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m, in the Townsend Freewill Baptist Church, 4519 S. Dupont Parkway, Townsend.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of one s choice.

Louis Gino Patacchiola
Louis Gino Patacchiola of Middletown passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007. He was 80.

Mr. Patacchiola was born on March 29, 1927, in Roma, Italia, to the late Vittorio Patacchiola and Secondina Rossi.

Despite growing up in war-torn Italy, he overcame obstacles to become a self-educated and successful businessman. In 1992, he retired as a vice president of sales for the cruise industry.

Mr. Patacchiola will be remembered as a man who loved life, laughed often and cherished family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Helen (Vetere); a son, Stephen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Rogan of Whitestone, N.Y., and Susan and Edward Webb of Middletown; five grandchildren, Melissa, Jonathan, Nicole, Nicholas, Ryan and Jessica; a sister and a brother-in-law, Angela and Antonio Moretti; and a brother and a sister-in-law, Roberto and Anna Patacchiola.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 5 at Old Bohemia Shrine (St. Francis Xavier), in Warwick, Md.

Burial was private.

Linda Young Welsh
Linda Young Welsh passed away following a long and courageous struggle with cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at the Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania. She was 64.

Mrs. Welsh was born on Sept. 7, 1943in Norristown, Pa., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Young.

She was a graduate of Norristown High School, where she was a member of the swim team and captain of the cheerleading squad. She was a member of the National Honor Society, served as class president and was the Valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended Gettysburg College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She also was selected as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and earned honors as a member of Delta Phi Alpha German honorary Society. She was a member of Eta Sigma Phi honorary society for classical language and served as president of Alpha XI Delta sorority. She earned her master s degree in education from Delaware State University.

Mrs. Welsh devoted her life to education. She taught school for several years and was employed by the Delaware State Department of Education as an education associate. She retired in 2003 after serving more than 30 years in education.

She loved traveling, reading and spending time with her granddaughter, Kate.

Mrs. Welsh was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Robert D. Welsh; a son and a daughter-in-law, Stephen M. and Susan (Torrance) Welsh of Macon, Ga.; a granddaughter, Katherine Kate T. Welsh of Macon; a sister, Susan Clayman of Phoenixville, Pa.; a brother, W. Michael Young Jr. of Audubon, Pa.; eight nieces; and five nephews.

Services were held on Oct. 8 at Tobert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St Andrew s Lutheran Church, 425 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Marie E. Harrison
Marie E. Harrison of Middletown, formerly of Milford, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, with her loving family by her side. She was 82.

She was born on Sept. 19, 1925, in Baltimore, daughter of the late Antoni and Agnes (Baburek) Bittner.

Mrs. Harrisonwas a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed being with her family and especially enjoyed fishing with her husband. In 2003, she and her husband moved to Middletown from Milford to be closer to her loving daughters. Her warm and caring ways always filled her home with love.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers.

She leaves many cherished memories to her loving husband of 62 years, John W. Harrison; two beautiful daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Ron Morgan of Middletown, and Stacey and Mike Rapp of Bear; a sister, Agnes Dietz of Baltimore; four brothers, Stanley Bittner, Steven Bittner and Tony Bittner all of Baltimore, and Richard Bittner of North Carolina; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Committal service will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, at Delaware Veteran s Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, at Connection Community Church, 100 W. Green St., Middletown, where friends are cordially invited to join Mrs. Harrison s family for a time of fellowship immediately following services.

Michele Nick Bertamini

Michele Bertamini of Smyrna died at his home Friday, October 5, 2001. He was 75.

Mr. Bertamini was born in Athens, Greece and was raised in Italy. He was the loving son of the late Andre and Despena Bertamini.

He immigrated to the U.S. in 1955, and settled in Baltimore, Md. He later owned and operated the North East Diner, North East, Md. and Pinsy s Pancake House, Townsend. Most recently, he was employed as a chef at Dover Downs before retiring due to illness.

Mr. Bertamini enjoyed horseback riding.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Pinsiree B. Bertamini; three daughters, all of Md., Alicia (Eric) Marquis, Lavonne Bertamini and Janet (Douglas) Bertamini; a stepson, Alexander Rabold of Ill.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia (Mark) Agerton of Ga.; a brother, Policapo (Mirella) Bertamini of Italy; two sisters, Angela (Gino) Tito and Sofia Graddorola, all of Italy; three grandchildren, Jeanna, Nicole and Zackery; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and interment were held Oct. 9 at St. Peter s Cemetery, Smyrna.

Arrangements were by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

David J. Caward

David J. Caward died Sunday, October 7, 2001 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa. He was 64.

He was born April 3, 1937 in Bath, N.Y. to Raymond A. and Margarett Smith Caward. He was retired Operating Engineer for Local #542 Dist. 5 of Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Caward was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a 30 years member of the Old Timers Mule Association and was an avid showman of mules.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Richardson Caward; his mother, Margarett Caward of Savona, N.Y.; four children, Lyndon Russell Kennedy of Dresdon, N.Y., Debora Manzer of Watkins Glen, N.Y., Kenneth L. Caward of Bradford, N.Y. and David Caward, Jr. of Delaware City; two sisters, Marilyn Sue Caward of Savona, N.Y.; then grandchildren; a great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Savona, N.Y. There will also be a memorial service at Marshallton United Methodist Church in Delaware at a later date.

Donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

Lettie Faye Chandler

L. Faye Chandler of Middletown died Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at home. She was 61.

Mrs. Chandler, formerly of Salisbury, Md., lived in Delaware with her husband of 25 years, B. Quillin Chandler. She was a graduate of Wicomico High School and attended Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and president of the Philadelphia Thimble Society.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Pamela Patrick; a son, Steven (Laura) Ahtes and his daughter, Peyton Jayne Ahtes, of Bear; a stepson, B. Quillin (Mary Ann) Chandler, Jr. and his daughter, Kaylee Chandler, all of Conesus, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Robin Chandler of Salisbury, Md.; a step grandson, Jessie LeJune; a step granddaughter, Michelle LeJune, both of Salisbury, md.; and a brother, Joseph (Millie) Crovo of Blue Ridge, Va.

Services were held Oct. 5 at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, Talleyville.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Berlin, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
