Kenneth Erickson
Kenneth Erickson, of Claymont, died peacefully Sept. 6, 2005, with his family at his side, after a long cardiac illness. He was 75.

Ken was born Sept. 12, 1929, in New Haven, Conn. He was a superior athlete, lettered and was team captain in football, basketball and baseball during his high school years. In 1997, he was honored for his ability and inducted into the Branford Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame. He left home at 17 years of age to attend the Maine Maritime Academy. Ken graduated from the Academy in 1950 as an engineer of maritime services. Again, he excelled in his athletic abilities and was inducted into the Maine Maritime Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Ken sailed in the Merchant Marines until 1958 when he took employment with Bailey Controls as a service and sales engineer in the power industry for Bailey Controls. Ken enjoyed many prestigious sales awards such as Top Salesman of the Year and Knights of the Round Table. Ken retired in 1996 and enjoyed being a full-time grandparent.

Ken is survived by his wife, of 46 years, Mary Lou; his two daughters, Rhonda Montgomery, of Middletown, and Sandra Rowles, of Claymont; son-in-law, C. James Montgomery, Jr.; and brother, Donald Erickson, of Branford, Conn. His beloved daughter, Cheryl Ann Walker, predeceased him in 1997.

Ken's most important activity was keeping up with his grandchildren: C. James Montgomery III, of Middletown, Justin Montgomery, of Newark, Lauren and Kenneth Walker, both of Port Penn, Jason and Jessica Prigg, both of West Grove, Pa., Ryan and Robyn Rowles, both of Wilmington, Kaitlynn Haley, of Claymont; and great-grandson, Kyle Joseph Shockley, of Port Penn.

A memorial service was held at the Chandler Funeral Home, Sept. 11. Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christiana Care Visiting Nurses Association, 1 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720, or to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

Ruby B. Stroupe
Ruby B. Stroupe, of Clayton, previously of Stanley, N.C., died at home Monday, Sept. 5, 2005. She was 77.

Ms. Stroupe was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Lowell, N.C., daughter of the late Marion Butler Bradford and Lillian Sloop Bradford. She was self-employed as a seamstress for most of her life. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, as well as arts and crafts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Flowers and Nell Armstrong, and a brother, Ronald Bradford. She is survived by her dear companion, Bill Dawkins, of Clayton; a daughter, Phylis Burton, and her husband Kenneth Burton, of Stanley, N.C.; two sons, Steven Segars, and his wife Betsy Segars, of Clayton, and Michael White, and his wife Brenda White, of Stanley, N.C.; a brother, Philip Bradford, of Kings Mountain, N.C.; six grandchildren, Scott Segars, Daniel Segars, Stephanie Segars, Kim Goodman, Todd Burton, and Matthew White; and five great-grandchildren, Ryan Goodman, Nathan Goodman, Leigha Goodman, Erin Segars, and Shelby Segars.

Services were held Sept. 7 at the Faries Funeral Chapel, Smyrna. Burial will be in Stanley, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Dr., Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.

Diane M. Rhoads Ruda
Diane Marie Rhoads Ruda, of Smyrna, and formerly of Drexel Hill, Pa., died on Thursday Sept. 8, 2005, at her home. She was 52.

She was the daughter of the late Andrew Rhoads and the late June Senior Rhoads. She was a 1971 graduate of Interboro High School, Norwood, Pa., and was employed as a nursing assistant for several years before moving to Delaware in 2001.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeff Rhoads. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, John Ruda Sr.; two sons, John Ruda Jr., and his wife Jessica, of Dearborn, Mich., and Jeffrey Ruda, of Smyrna; a daughter, Natalie Ruda, of Smyrna; three brothers, Michael Rhoads, of Idaho, Andrew Rhoads, of Upper Darby, Pa., and Fred Rhoads, of Pennsville, N.J.; a sister, Greta Rhoads, of Upper Darby, Pa.; four grandchildren, Zachary, Anthony, and Emily Ruda, all of Dearborn, Mich.; and Ashley Ruda, of Smyrna.

Services will be held at a later date in Norwood, Pa. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Assoc., 100 W. 10th St., Suite 1002, Wilmington, De. 19801.

Edward F. Landon
Edward F. Landon, of Dover, and formerly of Townsend, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Bay Health Medical Center (KGH) in Dover. He was 82.

Mr. Landon worked for the Delaware Department of Transportation and also at the Smyrna Rest Area. He attended the Middletown Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his daughter Rubby Hammond, and her husband Kevin, of Houston; a grandson Kyle; three sons, Ed, Frank, and Bill; and several cousins.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial was in Old Union Church Cemetery, near Townsend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Calvary Assembly of God, 1141 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, DE. 19901.

Vincent Joseph Barone Sr.
Vincent Joseph Barone Sr. of Middletown, formerly of Mantua, N.J., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007. He was 87.
Mr. Barone was born in Philadelphia, on March 1, 1920, son of the late Giuseppe and Maria (Salvato) Barone.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II. He received the American Area Campaign and Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medals.

He was a skilled and meticulous master carpenter for many years and transformed his trade into an art.

Mr. Barone was a long time member of the Carpenter s Union in Philadelphia and a member of Incarnation Catholic Church in Mantua, where he served as an usher at Mass, a volunteer at many parish functions and a member of the Holy Name Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Florence (Bernal) Barone; and a son-in-law, Michael J. Centuolo.

He is survived by a daughter, Rose Anne Centuolo; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Vincent J. Jr. and Brenda Barone and Richard J. Barone; four grandchildren and two grandsons-in-law, Michele and Blair Pierce, Antoinette and Mark Majerus, Vincent J. Barone III and Nicholas A. Barone; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica Pierce, Stephanie Pierce, Christopher Majerus and Zachary Majerus.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland Hospice House for the loving care given to Mr. Barone during his time spent there. The family would also like to thank the staff for the sensitivity and compassion shown to them throughout his illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 12, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Bear.

Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Jeanette A. Draper
Jeanette Alexandria Draper of Elkton, Md., and Bethany Beach died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007.

Mrs. Draper was born on Feb. 15, 1918, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Stanislaw and Feliksa Piersa Ochenkowski.

She was a homemaker, but worked at New Castle County Air Base during World War II.

She enjoyed sewing, reading and the beach.

Mrs. Draper attended Immaculate Conception Church, Elkton, and St. Ann s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach. She had been a member of the Sodality.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Horace J. Draper.

She is survived by her children, Joan Binkley of Altamont, N.Y., Janet Potts of Wilmington, James Draper of Newark, John Draper of Bear, Jane Hendrickson of Elkton and Joseph Draper of Middletown; a sister, Cecelia Mucha of New Castle; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 11, 2007, at Immaculate Conception Church, Elkton.

Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Arrangements were by Hicks Home for Funerals, Elkton.

Francis X. Franny Fontana Sr.
Francis X. Franny Fontana Sr. of Middletown passed away on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007. He was 85.

Mr. Fontana was the son of the late Rocco and Mary Roman Fontana.

Private First Class Fontana was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force Air Transport Command, where he was an aircraft mechanic in the 5th Aircraft Maintenance 1345th Army Air Force. He completed missions of the Hump as a navigator in the China, Burma and India (CBI) Theatre.

He loved watching all sports, but his favorite was baseball, especially the Philadelphia Phillies. He enjoyed bowling, but mostly took great pride in his lawn and garden.

Mr. Fontana was a member of the American Legion Middletown Post 25 and worked out of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union No. 74 since 1948.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary L. Fontana, in 1980.

He is survived by a son, Francis X. Fontana Jr. of Middletown; a daughter, Ann Marie L. Fontana, with whom he lived in Middletown; a sister, Vivian Fontana Murphy of Wilmington; a brother and a sister-in-law, Robert J. and Angela Fontana of Newport; two cousins and a cousin-in-law, Lawrence and Idella Fontana of Middletown and Doris Fontana Obara of Newark; many nieces and nephews; and his pets and playmates, Rusty and Jake.

Mass of Christian Burial was offered Sept. 8, 2007, at St. Elizabeth s Catholic Church.

Entombment was in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.

Daisy M. (Roark) Haddock Lewis
Daisy M. (Roark) Haddock Lewis died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, surrounded by her loving family at Heartland Hospice House. She was 85.

She was retired from WL Gore and Company.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Fairwinds Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Maggie Roark; her first husband of 36 years, Walter L. Haddock; and a brother and sister-in-law, Grady and Faye Roark.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 22 years, William G. (Bill) Lewis Jr.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bobby and Myra Haddock, Inverness, Fla., and Barry Haddock of Newark; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Howard Thomas and Linda Haddock, all of Newark, and Lynn and Jean Haddock, Elkton, Md.; two stepchildren and a stepson-in-law, Barbara and John Walters of Middletown and William Lewis of Newark; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother and a sister-in-law, Charles and Faye June Roark of Newark; several nieces and nephews; her dog, CoCo; and all the wonderful friends and neighbors she came to know in her lifetime

The family would like to offer our most sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Heartland Hospice House for the exceptional care, dignity, compassion and many kindnesses shown to Mrs. Lewis and the entire family during her final days.

Dorothy E. Dot (Thomas) Weaver
Dorothy E. Dot (Thomas) Weaver of New Castle passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House. She was 85.

Mrs. Weaver was born in Middletown, daughter of the late Vaughn F. and Ida Mae (Jones) Thomas.

She graduated from William Penn High School.

After graduation, Mrs. Weaver went to work for the Wilmington Fibre Mill in New Castle.

She loved her family and took great pride in being a homemaker and belonged to the Delaware Homemaker s Club.

Mrs. Weaver was a member of the New Castle United Methodist Church, where she volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels and the Emmanuel Dining Room. She took great pride in giving back to others and served more than 20 years on the Junior Board at St. Francis Hospital. In addition, she was a member of the New Castle Century Club and the Delaware State Federation of Women s clubs for more than 50 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Jack Weaver, in 2004; two brothers, William H. Thomas and Vaughn Pete Thomas; and two sisters, Ethel T. Morris and Helen T. Hewes.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon L. Weaver and Sandra L. and David E. Jones; a grandson and a granddaughter-in-law, Christopher D. and Jeanna Jones; two granddaughters and two grandsons-in-law, Sheri L. and David Marvel and Lauri A. and Charles Roper; and three great-grandchildren, Seth H. Marvel, McKenzie T. Marvel and Jenna E. Roper.

Services were held Sept. 7, 2007, at New Castle United Methodist Church.

Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

John L. Freeman Jr. of Wilmington died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Tilton Terrace. He was 92.

Services were held Sept. 12, 2007, at Zoar UM Church, Odessa.

Josephine P. Manlove
Josephine P. Manlove of Odessa passed away on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007. She was 92.

Mrs. Manlove was born on July 6, 1915, daughter of the late Edward and Minnie Price .

She lived in the Odessa area most of her life.

Mrs. Manlove retired from the former Leeds in Clayton.

She loved people, flowers, poodles and life itself. Everyone who knew her fell in love with her. She adored her family very much and was a hard worker. She was a humble, kind and caring lady with an enormous heart. She was a passionate Philadelphia Phillies fan.

Mrs. Manlove was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Odessa. She was a life member of the VFW Post 3792 Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Paul Manlove; a son, Gilmore Reed; and two brothers, Emil Price and Edward Price .

She is survived by two brothers, Charles E. Price of Middletown and Nolan T. Price of Camden; a sister, E. Mae Young of Woodbury Heights, N.J.; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Paul Reed of Bear and John and Valerie Reed of Middletown; a granddaughter and a grandson-in-law, Kelly and Mark Stanley of Middletown; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Stanley and Morgan Stanley; Gloria Walker of Milton, whom she raised; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services were held Aug. 28, 2007, at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Burial was in Old Drawyer s in Odessa.

Donald W. Pope Alfree, Sr.
Donald W. Pope Alfree Sr. of Blackbird passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 78.

Mr. Alfree was born Sept. 12, 1928, son of the late Alexander and Alice (Jones) Alfree.

He spent much of his childhood with his Aunt Rhoda and Uncle Roy Jones, growing up on Pop Jones farm near Golts, Md. As a boy, he commuted back and forth between Blackbird and Golts on his bicycle. He cherished the land on which he lived in Blackbird and was a true believer in preserving Delaware Farmland.

He worked for Flying A Gas Station at H&H Corner in Townsend, TransWorld Airlines in New Castle, the Delaware State Highway Department, the Tank Plant in Newark and Chrysler Corp. at the Newark Assembly Plant as a door/hood fitter for 37 years, retiring in 1990. He was a proud member of the UAW Local 1183 during his employment. He never took a vacation and rarely missed a day from work. It didn t matter how deep the snow fell during a winter storm, he always made it to his job. He was very proud of his many years of hard work and instilled that into his children.

Mr. Alfree was an avid sports fan and was especially fond of WWE/WWF wrestling and PGA golf. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Before his illness, he loved to tinker on things and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors. Although he was known for his rough mannerism, he had a huge heart. He would do anything to help out his children and grandchildren. He could often be seen riding his John Deere lawn mower around home and at his neighboring children s homes. He loved to mow the lawn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mabel (McClain) Alfree, on Jan. 16, 2006.

He is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Alfree Jr. and Bonnie of Townsend and Larry W. Alfree of Blackbird; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane L. and Jay Alphin of Blackbird, Debbie S. and Jimmy Emerson of Middletown and Donna L. Alfree and her companion, William Stackhouse, of Blackbird; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, a brother and a sister-in-law, LeRoy and Edna Alfree of Blackbird; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sept. 12. 2007, at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Burial was in the Townsend Cemetery.

Phyllis Reed Adams

Phyllis Reed Adams of Smyrna died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 in her home after an extended illness. She was 78.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Elsie and Harry Reed of Smyrna.

Mrs. Adams was a longtime member of St. Polycarp s Church, Smyrna and the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality.

Until her illness forced her to stop, she played golf with the 9-hole women s group at Garrison Lake Country Club for many years and was the 9-hole ladies champion for several different years.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence J. Adams, Sr.; a son, Clarence J. Adams, Jr. of Smyrna; two daughters, Phyllis M. Levy of Sarasota, Fla. and Linda M. Fleming of Ellendale; four grandchildren, Kristine Adams and Aaron Adams, both of Smyrna, Michelle A. Shields of Boca Raton, Fla. and Melissa M. Sterbins of St. Louis, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Kodey Stapleton of Smyrna and Justin A. Shields of Boca Raton, Fla.; two sisters; a brother; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Sept. 10 at St. Polycarp s Church, Smyrna.

Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.

If desired, contributions may be sent opt St. Polycarp s Parish Building Fund, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Katherine Morris Diehl

Katherine Morris Diehl of Townsend died Monday, September 3, 2001 in the Green Valley Pavilion in Smyrna. She was 80.

Mrs. Diehl was a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Wiest of Wilmington; and a niece, Joyce Mullins of Bear.

Services were held Sept. 6 at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Burial was private.

Russell C. Grant, V

Russell C. Grant, V, infant son of Russell C., IV and Nancy Grant of Odessa died Monday, September 3, 2001.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Justin Brewer; two sisters, Danielle and Jessica Grant; maternal grandparents, Carmelo and Doris Garcia; paternal grandparents, Russell C., III and Charlotte Grant.

Graveside services were held Sept. 7 at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
