Elsie Crossan Kelly of Hockessin died on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at Christiana Hospital after a short illness. She was 87.
She was born in Kaolin, Pa. the daughter of Alfred V. and Florence Williamson Crossan. She graduated from Kennett Square High School and lived in Kaolin for 20 years. The rest of her life she spent in Hockessin and Lewes.
Mrs. Kelly was a partner with her husband in a plumbing business in Hockessin for more than 45 years. She was a member of the Hockessin Fire Company s Ladies Auxiliary and St. Mary of Assumption Parish. She loved gardening and Hockessin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Kelly, in 1977.
She is survived by three children, Joan Griffith of Meadowood, Eileen Ford of Hockessin and Joseph Kelly of Greenville; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Lamborn of Middletown and Evelyn Bowlsby of Hockessin.
Services were held Sept. 8 at St. Mary of The Assumption Church, Hockessin.

Donald W. McGowan
Donald W. McGowan of Bear died Friday, September 7, 2001 at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 46.
He was born in Wilmington, the son of Barbara Smith McGowan and the late Donald F. McGowan. A Mason, he was a member of Jackson Lodge #9 AF & AM in Delaware City, Caesar Rodney #8 OES. He was the Delaware State representative of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. He enjoyed hunting with his terriers, fishing, computers and being with his friends and family.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 15 years, Brenda Dover McGowan; a son, Jordan W. McGowan; a daughter, Crystal Shockley, both of bear; two sisters, Kathleen McGowan and Wendi McGowan, both of Bear; a brother, Bryon McGowan of Wilmington; a nephew; seven nieces; and countless friends.
Services were Sept. 11 at Beeson Memorial Services of Christiana-Elkton, Fox Run.
Burial was private.

Christopher A. Pennington
Christopher A. Pennington of Bear died Thursday, September 6, 2001 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 28.
Mr. Pennington was a metal worker with Industraplate Corporation for six years. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed Mustangs.
He is survived by his parents, Jim Pennington and Charlotte McConathey, both of Newark; his grandmothers, Edith Ulbinskyof Fla. and Ada Pennington of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Celeste Meldrom and her husband, Mark of Newark; his girlfriend, Tammy Rock of Newark; an aunt and uncle, Cynthia and Robert Husbands of Townsend; a nephew and niece, Blake Baxendale and Taylor Meldrom; and his dog, Rex.
Services were held Sept. 11 at Mealey Funeral Home, Wilmington.
Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
Elsie M. Simione
Elsie M. Simione formerly of Wilmington died Tuesday, September 4, 2001 in the Hillside Care Center. She was 86.
She was a housewife. She loved playing bingo and going to the casino.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel P. Simione, in 1982.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Karros and Shirley Phillip, both of Wilmington and Deborah Danek of Middletown; a sister, Margaret Shanahan; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Services and burial were private.

Billy W. Swanner
Mr. Swanner was born in Gilmer, Texas, and was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific. He was employed as a refrigeration technician and electrician for many years, retiring in 1988 as the director of maintenance from Food Fair Stores in Philadelphia. He was a member of St. Polycarp Church, Smyrna.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Raelaine S. Swanner; 2 sons, Donald W. Swanner, of Fremont, Ca.; and Eric N. Swanner, of Holland, Pa.; 2 daughters, Karen S. Wood, of Bensalem, Pa.; and R. Sheila Skillens, of Sellersville, Pa.; a sister, Patsy Dyke, of Gilmer, Tx.; 8 grandchildren; and 1 great grandson.
A Memorial Mass was held Monday Sept. 9 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church, Smyrna. Interment was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Newark. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the St. Polycarp Parish Building Fund, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, De. 19977.
Judith C. Long
Born in Chelsea, Pa, Mrs. Long was a graduate of Media (PA) High School and Goldey-Beacom College. She was employed as a legal secretary with the Law Firm of Weik, Nitsche & Dougherty in Wilmington for the past 15 years. Previously, she had worked for the Delaware Power and Light Company, for Faith City Christian School for 6 years, and for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for 12 years.
Mrs. Long was a member of the Pleasantville Baptist Church. She also had a keen interest in American history and was a member of the 12th Virginia Company E, a Civil War reenactment group. Although accomplished in her professional life, Mrs. Long was devoted above all else to her beloved family and her lifelong faith in Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, William H. Long III; 3 daughters, Alice C. Blodgett and her husband, Donald W. Jr. of Newark, Virginia E. Allen and her husband, M. Gordon of Townsend and Christina M. Long at home; her parents, Fred and Agnes Suloff of Bear; 4 grandchildren, Alexandra E. Allen, Gordon C. Allen, Donald W. Blodgett III, and Emily V. Blodgett; father-in-law, William H. Long, Jr.; brother-in-law, Daniel Hutchinson; niece, Carolyn H. Thomas; and 2 nephews, Daniel S. Hutchinson and Derek F. Hutchinson.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Elaine S. Hutchinson; and mother-in-law, Virginia J. Long.
A memorial service was held Sept. 6 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 100 W. 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
Mary A. Koper
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 7 in St. Hedwig Church, followed by burial in All Saints Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Vision of Life Program, c/o St. Hedwig Church, Wilmington, DE 19805.
Hazel M. Harris
Born in Burr Hill, Va., Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late Samuel J. and Mary R. (Adams) Eaton. She had been a waitress for more than 30 years at area restaurants including Ibach's Steakhouse in Wilmington.
Mrs. Harris enjoyed reading, walking, listening to country music, traveling, and playing cards with friends.
Her husband, Curtis P. Harris, died August 20, 2002. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michele E. Pacheco, in November 2001.
She is survived by her children, Patricia M. Wadsley of Middletown, Phyllis M. Fox of Millsboro, James W. Harris of Millsboro, Curtis M. Harris of Newark, Kathleen C. Urban of New Castle and Sandra L. Pacheco at home; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sept. 6, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle. Interment was in the adjoining memorial park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Minquadale Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, PO Box 663, Manor Branch, New Castle, DE 19720 or to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
Helen R. Garton
Mrs. Garton was a member of St. Elizabeth parish and St. Anthony parish in Wilmington. She was predeceased by her husband, Franklin in 1967; her sisters, May Kotowski and Stella Zebroski; and a grandson, Frank Garton.
Survivors include her sons, Gerald Garton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Harry Garton of Middletown, Daniel Garton of Elsmere; a daughter, Mary Garton of Newark; a grandson, Daniel Garton, II; 2 brothers, Harry Banick of Wilmington, Stanley Banick of Fenwick Island; and a sister, Caroline Kelley of Wilmington.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 7 at St. Elizabeth Church, Wilmington. Interment was in Cathedral Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 431 S. Walnut St., Kennett Square, PA 19348.
Bertha Cecelia Pruitt
She was born July 29, 1929 to Bertha and Charles Slaughter, Sr. and was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Joseph Pruitt; and 2 sons, Charles Bowen and Gerry Bowen. She is survived by her children, Phyllis (Benjamin) Reichenbach of Valdosta, Ga., Elizabeth (John) Johnson of Townsend, Randolph (Wendi) Bower of Bear, Joseph Bowen of Md., Carla (Don) Syler of N.C., Linda Andrews of Newark, Carlett Sweeney of Dover; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sept. 7 in the Chandler Funeral Home, Hockessin. Interment was private. In place of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19713.
J. Barney Pierce
Mr. Pierce was born on Aug. 13, 1936, son of the late Hiram and Madeline O'Neal Pierce. A lifetime resident of Cecil County, he was a 1955 graduate of Cecilton High School. He began working as a burner technician for Boulden, and Cochran Oil Companies, retiring from American Home and Hardware in 2000 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Cecilton Vol. Fire Company, Middletown Moose Lodge, & Millington VFW Post 652. Barney enjoyed hunting, fishing, and crabbing.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Lockwood and Theresa Mae Rhoades, and an infant brother, Walter Richard Pierce.
Barney is survived by his companion of 13 years, Alice Cuperto, and her family; a brother, Phillip Pierce, and his wife Beverly; and brother-in-law Richard Rhoades, all of Cecilton; & several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Wed., Sept. 11 from 7 to 9 pm in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, Md. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thurs., Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. in St. Dennis R.C. Church, Galena. Burial will be in Galena Cemetery.

Joan Nagowski
Mrs. Nagowski retired in 1996 after 20 years of service as a presser for Joy Cleaners. Her husband, Robert W. Nagowski, passed away in 1979.
She is survived by a son, Robert W. Nagowski, Jr. (Robin) of New Castle; daughters, Dolores R. Thomas (Richard) of New Castle, Nanci Clement (Nathan) of Newark, Marlene Chinski of Newark, Christine Williams (Morris) of Bear; a brother, Charles Crossan of Wilmington; sisters, Eleanor Baer of Newark, Ronnie Woerner of Bear, Jackie Cain of Middletown and Jerri Sharrock of New Castle; 7 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 11 at the John F. Yasik Funeral Home. Burial was in Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19713.
Lida B. Morris
Mrs. Morris was the daughter of the late Charles and Hilda Bailey and she graduated from Middletown High School in 1940. She was a homemaker and active in the "Friendly Neighbors Club" throughout New Castle County. Mrs. Morris was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna and enjoyed making crafts and cooking.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Mari Jean Reynolds in 1994. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, E. Carl Morris; 2 sons, Wayne and Charles, both of Blackbird; 11 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. The family would also like to recognize and thank her caregiver and friend, Ida Mae Ford.
Funeral services were held Sept. 10 in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial was in the Townsend Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.
Charles M. Russell
Mr. Russell was predeceased by his father, Victor Russell, Sr. in September 1997. He will be dearly missed by his children, Charles and Autumn Russell; his mother, Sharon (Fuller) Russell; his brothers, Victor, Jr. and Benjamin Russell, both of Wilmington; and a sister, Kathy Ellis of Townsend.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 10 at St. Matthew's Church, Woodcrest. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Matthew's Church, 3 Curtis Ave., Wilmington, DE 19804.
Franklin H. Hendricks
Mr. Hendricks is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary B. Hendricks; 3 sons, Roger D. Hendricks, Sr. (Priscilla) of Middletown, Franklin W. Hendricks (Janet) of Harrington, John W. "Jack" Hendricks (Nancy Jo) of Harrington; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Robert Taylor of Harrington, Beverly and John M. Curtis of Harrington; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company on Sept. 8. Interment was in the Hollywood Cemetery in Harrington. William P. DiMaio
Mr. DiMaio was born in Wilmington on August 29, 1934 to the late Carmen and Virginia (Pucklowski) DiMaio. He was a self-employed general contractor specializing in carpentry for 47 years, retiring in 1996. He served in the Delaware National Guard for 18 years, and was a member of the Order of Red Men and St. Catherine of Siena parish.
His wife, Agnes (Thornton), passed away in 1988 and he was also predeceased by his sister, Mildred Cocco.
Mr. DiMaio is survived by his friend, Eleanor Fanning of Wilmington; his brother, Louis DiMaio of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his sister, Thomasanne Diver of Middletown; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and a great-great-nephew.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena R.C. Church, Centerville Rd., on Friday morning, September 13 at 10:30. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Charles P. Arcaro Funeral Home, 2309 Lancaster Ave. (opposite Cathedral Cemetery) on Thursday evening, September 12 from 7-9 p.m.
