Merrill Wilson Stafford
Merrill Wilson Stafford of Smyrna passed away on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, surrounded by his family.

Ms. Stafford was born on July 11, 1951, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Marilyn and Jack E. Wilson III.

She was a 1969 graduate of Smyrna High School. She moved to Newark and attended the University of Delaware, where she worked at the Stone Balloon. She enjoyed world travel while working for Capital Airlines. She earned a master s degree in mathematics from the University of Delaware.

She then began her teaching career at Delaware State University and proceeded to Delaware Technical & Community College, Concord High School and Newark High School. She integrated her teaching style by tutoring her friends and family in her personal time.

Mrs. Stafford relished her time at the beach with her family and friends. Most of her leisure time was spent on family vacations and cooking with her buddy, Matt. She also spent countless hours under the tree at the Smyrna Swim Club. She recently gave her best friend and daughter, Veronica, in married and was blessed with a grandson and granddaughter. She retired from teaching high school to devote her time to her family and dogs.

She is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Veronica Marilyn and Matthew Dorris; two sons: James Naylor IV and Christopher Naylor; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Cynthia and Ronald Dooley, Victoria and Maurice Beck, and Kathryn and Brian David; a brother and a sister-in-law, John E. IV and Marsha Wilson; nieces and nephews, Geneva, Merrill, Stewart, John Arthur, Brandon, Meredith, Brian and Nina; two close family friends, Amber Lech and Elsie Williams; two beloved dogs, Sophia and Montana; and random cats.

Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m., at St. Peter s Episcopal Church, 22 N. Union St., Smyrna, DE 19977 at 3 p.m. 2007.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kent County S.P.C.A., 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934; or to St. Peter s Episcopal Church, 22 N. Union Street, Smyrna, DE 19977

James B. Burke
James B. Burke of Delaware City died on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at his home. He was 76.

Mr. Burke was born in Portland, Maine, on Jan. 11, 1931, son of the late Blanche and Edward Burke.

He attended Portland High School.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, Mr. Burke served his country in both the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army and the Seabees of the U.S. Navy.

In civilian life, he was a lineman by profession and enjoyed a 25-year career with Delmarva Power and Light (DP & L).

He greatly enjoyed fishing, bowling and skeet shooting throughout his life, and was an avid reader.

Mr. Burke was a member of the Century Club at DP & L and a member of Disabled Veterans of America.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael James Burke, in 1974.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Claudia L. Curtis Burke; a daughter, Kathleen L. Matney of Townsend; and two granddaughters, Christina L. Matney and Katelynne E. Matney.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to VITAS Hospice, Urgent Ambulance, and Delaware City Fire Company for their many kindnesses to Mr. Burke during his illness.

Services were held on Aug. 28 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Delaware City.

A committal service will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, in Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., South Portland, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delaware City Fire Company, P.O. Box 251, Delaware City, DE 19706; or to St. Paul s R.C. Church, P.O. Box 544, Delaware City, DE 19706.

James E. Walker, Jr.
James E. Walker Jr. of Townsend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at his home. He was 61.

Mr. Walker was a graduate of Middletown High School and the University of Delaware.

He retired from the Delaware Turnpike, where he worked as a supervisor.

Mr. Walker was a life member of the Townsend Fire Company, where he served as an EMT and was also a past treasurer.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Sr.; and a brother, John.

He is survived by his mother, Lula Mae Walker of Townsend; an aunt, Mary J. Kennedy of Warwick, Md.; and his cousins, who helped care for him during his illness, Sharon Starkey and her family of Millington, Md.

Services were held on Aug. 25 at the Townsend Fire Hall.

Burial with Fireman s Honors was in Townsend Cemetery.

Timothy J. Daggett
Timothy J. Daggett of Worton, Md., died on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, in Chester River Hospital, Cheterstown, Md. He was 62.

Mr. Daggett was born on Nov. 17, 1944, in Baltimore, son of the late Parker and Dorothy Tromblee Daggett.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran during the Vietnam era. While living in Malvern, Pa., he was co-owner of Deacon Industrial Supply Co. in King of Prussia. In 1982, he moved to Kent County, Md., where he had worked for Velsico Chemical Company in Worton, and was the purchasing manager for the Town of Middletown.

Mr. Daggett was an avid reader, golfer and gourmet cook, and was known for his collection of classic cars.

He is survived by his wife of nine years, Leslie Lipham Daggett; two stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Sean and Abigail O Cain of Elkton and James Jr. and Korena O Cain of Middletown; two brothers, Jonathan Daggett of Houston, Texas, and Peter Daggett of New Orleans, La.; and three grandchildren, Kaitlin O Cain, Allyson O Cain and Tyler O Cain.

Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, Md., where friends and family may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Kent County, 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, MD 21620; or the Town of Middletown Relay for Life, Attn: Town Manager s Office, 19 W. Green St., Middletown, DE 19709.

Carrall T. Dale

Carrall T. Dale of Delaware City died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at the home of his daughter, surrounded by family. He was 84.

Mr. Dale was a carpenter with the Local 626 for 41 years before retirement in 1979. He was a Naval Veteran of World War II and a former membre of the Delaware City Recreation Club. His church affiliations included St. Mary s Church and St. Patrick s Church inWilmington, Our Lady of Fatima Church in New Castle and St. Dennis Church in Galena.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen (Elliott) Dale, in 1990.

He is survived by three sons, Thomas of Bear, Philip of Claymont and David of Glen Mills, Pa.; a daughter, Mary Ellen Harrison of Delaware City; 10 grandchildren; and a great granddaughter.

Services and burial were held Aug. 25 at St. Mary s Church, Wilmington.

Contributions may be amde to Delaware Hospice, Inc., 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

Esther Garnett
Esther Garnett of Chesapeake City, Md. died Monday, August 20, 2001 in Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville, Md. She was 76.

Miss Garnett was born on Oct. 16, 1924 daughter of the late York and Reather Garnett. A lifetime resident of Chesapeake City wehre she was a member o fthe Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. She also attended the Senior Day Care Center in Centreville.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Garnett Fields.

She is survived by three sisters, Thelma Gibbs of Wilmington, Bertina Garnett of Chesapeake City, Md. and Alyce Tiller of Elkton; and five brothers, Benjamin Garnett of Middletown, Eugene Garnett of Cecilton, Md., William Garnett of Elkton, Md. and Reuben and Preston Garnett, both of Newark.

Services were held on Aug. 25 in the Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Chesapeake City.

Interment was in Bohemia Manor Cemetery, Chesapeake City.

Phyllis W. Haas
Phyllis W. Haas of Bradenton, Florida died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at home. She was 64.

Born in Wauchula, Fla., she traveled with her parents during the agricultural season. During one of these trips she met her future husband, Bill Haas, at the cucumber-packing house in Middletown. Mr. and Mrs. Haas were partners in their farming operations. She was an active member of Central Grange and Delaware State Grange, PTA and many community involvements. Her love and compassion for her children and grandsons was endless. She also loved her animals, cooking, crafts, sewing, and gardening. She headed a Ministry of Compassion to members who had lost loved ones or were sick, actively volunteered when needed, President of the WHO (Woman Helping Others) Circle, Served as Lay Speaker, and Past-President of Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

She was preceded in death by her husband F. William (Bill) Haas, Jr., in 1990; and her parents, T. Herman and Edith Wilson.

Mrs. Haas is survived by three daughters, Lisa Norris and her husband, Melvin and Cathi Hill and her husband, Dave all of Bradenton and Lou Ann Lester and her husband, Gordon of Bear; a sister, Jan Carstens; a brother, A.J. Wilson of Fla.; and four grandsons.

A memorial service was held at Braden River United Methodist Church Aug. 24, officiated by Rev. Guy Weatherly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be sent to her home church - Braden River United Methodist Church, 5858 44th Ave. East, Bradenton, FL 34203 or St. Georges United Methodist Church, PO Box 145, St. Georges, DE 19733 were she worshiped when visiting in Delaware.

Mary H. McKernan
Mary H. McKernan of Smyrna died Sunday, August 26, 2001 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 85.

Mrs. McKernan was born in Marydel, Del. And was a 1933 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna. She had served in the Women s Army Auxiliary Corps in the 1940s. She and her sister, Margaret Buxton, had operated M and M Restaurant in Blackbird during the 1940s. Mrs. McKernan retired from Playtex, Dover after 25 years of service.

Later in her life, she worked as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Smyrna and at the Smyrna Diner. Most recently, she was employed by the State of Delaware as an Information Specialist at the Smyrna Rest Are Visitors Information Bureau.

Mrs. McKernan was a member of the David C. Harrison Post 14 American Legion Auxiliary, Smyrna, for 32 years. She was also a life member of VFW Post 8801, Clayton; and a member of the 20th Century Club of Smyrna.

Her hobbies included china painting, watching NFL football and enjoying wildlife, birds and pets. She also enjoyed planting and watching her favorite flowers bloom.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ulysses and Clara Hartnett; her husband, Stephen McKernan; a brother, William Pat Hartnett; and a sister, Helen Postles.

She is survived by a son, Stephen G. McKernan and his wife, Leslie, of Parkersburg, West Va.; a brother, John L. Hartnett and his wife, Clara of Dover; three sisters, Margaret Buxton of Smyrna, Verna McCutchen and her husband, Pat of Milford, and Kitty Budd and her husband, Grey of Smyrna; two granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Aug. 30 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce Street, Smyrna.

Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Polycarp s Parish Building Fund, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Charles Franklin Big C.P. Poore
Charles Franklin Poore of Smyrna died Sunday, August 26, 2001 in the Milford Center, Milford of heart failure. He was 78.

Mr. Poore was born near Massey, Md., the son of the late Harvey and Pauline Stevens Poore. He was a livestock dealer for all of his life retiring in 1985. He owned and operated several butcher shops in Del. And he also farmed for several years. From 1982 to 1990 he owned and operated Charles F. Poore & Son Auto Sales in Smyrna. Mr. Poore also sold modular homes for Larry s Homes in Bear.

He was a member of the New Castle Moose Lodge, a former member of the Clayton Lions Club and the Elks of Dover. He enjoyed playing cards.

He is survived by three sons, Gerald Wayne Poore, James A. Poore and Larry A. Poore, all of Smyrna; a brother, Robert H. Poore of Smyrna; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 30 at the Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress Street, Millington, Md., where friends and family may call one hour prior.

Interment will be in the Asbury Cemetery, Millington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, Kent County Division, PO Box 1977, Dover, DE 19903.

Elizabeth Betty H. Reed

Elizabeth Betty H. Reed of Townsend died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at the St. Frances Hospital in Wilmington. She was 69.

Mrs. Reed was born July 12, 1932 to the late Enoch and Hazel Wiggins.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Norman E. Reed; five children, Renee of Middletown, Norman and Calvin of Townsend, Dawn of Smyrna and Rydell of Bear; two sisters, Elsie Jeffcoat of Bera and Celesatine Woods of Townsend; a brother, Mitchell Gaines of Wilmington; a devoted niece, Norma Watson of Townsend; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Services were held Aug. 25 in Lee Haven United Methodist Church, Townsend.

Clarence Waters
Clarence Waters of Wilmington died Friday, August 24, 2001 in the St. Francis Hospital. He was 60.

He is the son of the late Bessie Waters, formerly of Middletown.

Mr. Waters is survived by five brothers, William Waters, John Waters, Robert Waters, Fred Waters and Roland Waters; three sisters, Helen Walker, Ellen Perkins and Lucinda Haynes; a sister-in-law, Doris Waters; a brother-in-law, Allen Perkins; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Aug. 28 at the House of Wright Mortuary, Wilmington.

Interment was in Gracelawn

Carroll C. 'Toby' Burris, Jr.
Carroll C. Toby Burris, Jr., of Middletown, died Sunday, August 25, 2002 at his home. He was 75.

Mr. Burris owned and operated Phillips Home Builders, Inc. in Middletown from 1964 to the present. He was a member and past Master of Union Lodge #5 AF & AM and had served on the Middletown Town Council. He was a life member of the Middletown Volunteer Hose Company and a Navy veteran of World War II. In his spare time, Mr. Burris enjoyed collecting miniature trains.

He was the son of the late Carroll C. Burris, Sr. and Mary Bolden and was preceded in death by a son, David C. Burris, in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean S. Burris, and three sons, Charles T. of Clayton, Daniel P. and wife Tina of Middletown, and James A., also of Middletown, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation was from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Middletown Volunteer Hose Company fire hall on West Green Street. Masonic services will be held on Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. with a funeral service following at the fire hall. Interment will be in the Forest Cemetery, Middletown.

The family suggests contributions to Union Lodge #5 AF & AM, P.O. Box 371, Middletown, DE 19709.

Carolyn M. Archie (Lynn)
Carolyn M. Archie (Lynn) passed away Aug. 23, 2002 in Dover. She was 38.

Miss Archie worked as a dietician at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill for 16 years. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanford Pierce, Sr. and the sister of Anthony, Stanford, Jr. and Troy. She is also survived by a family friend, Dorothy Davis; her brothers and sisters; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday Aug. 30 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses on Noxontown Road in Middletown. The viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. only. Burial will be held at Pine Tree Cemetery, Townsend.

John Frank Henry
John F. Henry, passed away on August 19, 2002 at the Kent General Hospital. He was 73.

He was born on May 3, 1929 to the late Oscar and Bessie Henry Nottingham. He began his education at Louis L. Reading School in Middletown and completed his education at Howard High School in Wilmington. He was employed with Sealtest Dairy for many years and later worked for Tyson F. Sartin until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rose E. Henry of Smyrna; three sons, Curtis F. Henry of Hyattsville, Md., Terrence E. Henry of Dover, and Raynard J. Stevenson of Townsend. From a previous marriage, he is survived by three sons, Carl Henry of Dover, John Henry of Smyrna, and James Henry of Townsend; and three daughters, Lavinia Rodgers of Smyrna, Lillian Henry of Townsend, and Sharon Rodgers of New Castle. In addition, he is survived by three brothers, Arthur Henry of Wilmington, Roland Henry of Waterbury, Conn. and William Henry of Lorena, Texas; three sisters, Beatrice Grace of Berlin, Md., Florence Wallace of Wilmington and Ruth Jefferson of Washington, D.C.; four daughters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; 16 grandchildren; Monet, his "Little Rascal;" eight great grandchildren; three aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A funeral service was held on Monday, August 26, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Graves Chapel UAME Church, Millington, Md., where friends could call two hours prior to the service. Interment was in the Graves Chapel UAME Church Cemetery, Millington, Md. Arrangements are by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

John J. Siekierda
John J. Siekierda of New Castle died on Friday, August 23, 2002 at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 78.

Born in Wilmington, Mr. Siekierda was the son of the late John and Mary (Rogalski) Siekierda.

He retired in 1989 after 34 years of service with the Red Clay Consolidated School District. Mr. Siekierda was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and its Leisure Club and the Retired State Employees Association. His hobbies included crabbing and fishing while spending time at the beach.

Mr. Siekierda proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942-1946 and was a plank owner on the USS Hutchins DD476.

After his honorable discharge from military service, he was active in both local and national veterans' organizations. Mr. Siekierda was a member and captain of the VFW state honor guard, a former commander of VFW District 1, a life member of American Legion Post #28 in Millsboro, a member of Polish-American VFW Post #3257 in Wilmington, a member of the Tin Can Sailors Association, and a member of the U.S. Navy Memorial Association.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth (Richards) Siekierda; two daughters, Joanna S. Williams of Bear and Terri M. Crawford and her husband, Dave, of Middletown; brother, Frank Siekierda and his wife, Kay, of Wilmington; brother-in-law, Jack Richards of Center, N.D.; and four grandchildren: Krisi Williams and Lisa Williams, both of Wilmington, and Kimberly Crawford and Kristin Crawford, both of Middletown.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, August 26, 2002 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle. Interment with military honors followed in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Outreach, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720.
