Chester Zmierski of Middletown, formerly of Newark, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at home. He was 75.
Mr. Zmierski was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Delaware in 1957.
He retired from Chrysler Motor Corp. in 1980 after more than 30 years of service. He also served in the army and was stationed in Germany.
He is survived by three sons, Joseph C. Zmierski of Wilmington, T. Bradford of Bristol, Conn. and Steven G. Zmierski and his wife, Tammy, with whom he recently resided; three grandchildren, Sara, Daniel and Hannah; a brother, Walter Zmierski of Mich.; a host of nieces and nephews and their families who reside in Mich.; his companion of 20 years, Frances McVey of Newark; and his former wife, Muriel Toomey and her husband, George, along with her family who reside in Mass.
Services were held Aug. 12 at Summit United Methodist Church, Middletown.
Burial was private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Claude E. “Cobby” Lester, Sr.
Claude E. Lester, Sr. of Lewes, formerly of St. Georges, died Wednesday August 7, 2002 surrounded by his family. He was 83.
He graduated from Delaware City High School in 1936, and in 1938 obtained a two-year business degree from Goldey Beacom College. Upon graduation from college, Mr. Lester worked at St. George's Trust Company and then Wilmington Trust Company in Wilmington. In 1941, he married his wife of 61 years, Helen Crompton.
Mr. Lester was called to serve his country in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1945, and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in connection with American Operations against the Germans. He then joined his family as a partner in the St. Georges Canning Company. He and his brothers continued the canning business through 1970 when, after 49 years of operation, the business was sold. Mr. Lester then went into farming which he enjoyed until his retirement in 1986, when he and his wife moved to Lewes. The winter months were often spent vacationing in Florida.
Mr. Lester was involved in many organizations including membership in St. George's Methodist Church, Lewes Presbyterian Church, Jackson Lodge #19 A.F.&A.M. (50 + year member), the Nur Temple Shrine; Shrine Club of Delaware; Ancient Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Wilmington; and the Royal Order of Jesters. Until his death he was an active member of the Wilmington Trust Company Advisory Board.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen "Toots" Lester; three sons, Ed Lester (Lynn) of Georgetown, Ken Lester (Robin) and Larry Lester (Annie), both of St. Georges; two brothers, Earle and Richard Lester, both of St. Georges; and six grandchildren, Brooke, Jaime, Kate, Sarah, Michael and Alex.
Services were held Aug.13, 2002 at Lewes Presbyterian Church. Burial was in St. Georges Cemetery.

Bernice Christine Tyler Waldridge Armstrong
Bernice Christine Tyler Waldridge Armstrong, formerly of Middletown, died Saturday, August 10, 2002, surrounded by family at Brandywine Assisted Living/Seaside Pointe, Rehoboth Beach. She was 82.
Mrs. Armstrong was born in Virginia Beach, Va., on March 14, 1920, daughter of the late Otto and Clarice Land Tyler. The family eventually moved to Middletown in 1931, and later to Elkton, Md.
She and her first husband established the Pittsburgh Paint and Glass Company in Newark.
Mrs. Armstrong married her second husband, Mr. Joseph Moore Armstrong, of Middletown in May of 1970.
She was very active and supportive of the Newark United Methodist Church. Mrs. Armstrong was a past president and an active member of the Middletown-Odessa Garden Club, and she received many floral arrangement awards from the club and Longwood Gardens. Mrs. Armstrong was an active member of the Middletown Historical Society, and she was an historic guide at the Corbit-Sharp House in historic Odessa, which is owned by the Winterthur Museum. She was a gifted seamstress, and enjoyed cooking and playing Bridge.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Linwood W. Waldridge, after 30 years of marriage; two brothers, Ernest and Edward Tyler; and three sisters, Evelyn Butterworth, Inez Stanley and Teresa Kincaid.
She is survived by her second husband of 32 years, Joseph Moore Armstrong of Seaside Pointe; three children, Joyce W. Young of St. Michaels, Md., Lawrence W. Waldridge, Sr. of Piney Creek, N.C. and Jayne M. Waldridge of Lewes; a brother, Ronald Tyler of Glasgow; five grandchildren, Donald, Lynda, David, Lawrence, and Nicole; six great-grandchildren, Alexis, Nicole, Shane, Brandy, Emily and Hope; and numerous extended family as well as stepchildren and their families.
Services were Aug. 14 in the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main St., Newark.
Interment was in the Head of Christiana Cemetery, Newark.

Keith Orval Tillotson
Keith Orval Tillotson died Friday, August 9, 2002. He was 85.
Mr. Tillotson was born in Harlan, Iowa on Feb. 17, 1917, the son of Arthur Tillotson and Edith Dent. He joined the U.S. Navy at 18, becoming an engineer and completed his enlistment in 1941. He later enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine, in which he served for six years.
On Feb. 24, 1948, Mr. Tillotson married the former Mary Ann Trupo of Newark, N.J., and settled in Los Angeles. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Lockheed Corp. and for the Flying Tigers airline.
Early in 1956, he moved to Nashville, Tenn., joining Capitol Airways Inc. as an aircraft inspector. He and his family moved near Wilmington in 1959, and in 1963 he joined Sears, Roebuck and Co. Mr. Tillotson's wife Mary Ann died in November 1980. The following year, he retired from Sears and started Tillotson Repair Service, repairing alternators, starters, and hydraulic equipment in his home workshop in Cedarcrest.
He married Kathryn 'Kitty' Thomas on May 6, 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Kitty; his children, Alan Tillotson of Wilmington, Debra McVey of Middletown, and Neal Tillotson of Newark; a stepson, Jack Thomas of Carney's Point, N.J.; six grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
Services were held Aug. 14 at Mealey Funeral Home, Wilmington.
Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Edna N. Rigby
Edna N. Rigby of Bear died Wednesday, August 7, 2002 after a short illness at Sunbridge Care in Elkton, Md. She was 101.
She was born in West Grove, Pa. Oct. 14, 1900 to the late Ellwood and Rebecca Speakman (Fell) Nichols. She lived in Hammorton and Fairville, Pa. until 1939 when she moved to Bear. She was a graduate of Kennett High School in 1920.
She enjoyed working in her yard, gardening and helping her grandson, Donnie, with his greenhouse work.
Mrs. Rigby was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years in 1956; a son, Seth Rigby; a brother, Wilmer E. Nichols; and twin sister, Emma N. Powell.
She is survived by a son, Ellwood T. Rigby of Newark; a daughter, Ruth E. Campbell (LeRoy) of Bear; grandchildren, Wayne E. Rigby, Paul C. Rigby, Donald L. Campbell and Jeffrey M. Campbell; 10 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 10 at Beeson Memorial Services of Newark.
Interment was in Newark Methodist Cemetery.

Claude C. Cross
Claude C. Cross of Port Penn, formerly of Ridgely, Md., died Monday, August 5, 2002 at home, surrounded by his family. He was 87.
Mr. Cross was a Marine Corps veteran who served his country during WWII. He was employed by SEPTA (Folsom Shop) for 38 years and served as president of Union Local #267 for 14 years. He was an avid baseball and football fan. He loved animals, especially his faithful companion, Blackjack. He enjoyed gardening.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Margaret Ginocchio, Hazel Soley, Linfield Cross, Raymond Cross and Mildred Rampmeyer.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary "Boop" Cross; two daughters, Geraldine Cooper and Carol Pearson (Steve) of Kenton; a sister, Mary Sachs of Boothwyn, Pa.; grandchildren, Scott C. Cross at home who helped care for him, Robin Golden of Landenberg, Pa., Shelby Passwater of Smyrna, Tanya Pearson and Steve Pearson, Jr., both of Kenton; three great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 8 in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.
Interment was in the adjoining memorial park.

Brenda Lee Duff
Brenda Lee Duff of Earleville, Md. died of heart failure on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 in the Union Hospital in Elkton, Md. She was 48.
She was born in Chester, Pa. and worked as a purchasing and ordering agent for Stanley Builders until 2001. She enjoyed plants, gardening and traveling.
Mrs. Duff was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrance Richard and Richard Cecil Davis, Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Earl Duff; a daughter, Cynthia Rand (Richard) of Earleville; two grandchildren, Stacie and Ryan; her father, Richard C. Davis, Sr. of Townsend; her mother, Violet M. Perez Alonzo (Quino) of Kennett Square, Pa.; a sister, Deborah Davis of Oxford, Pa.; a brother, John Richard Davis of West Grove, Pa.; two half-brothers, Quino Perez Alonzo of Meridian, MS and Sesario Perez Alonzo of Kennett Square; three stepsisters, Patricia Anderson of Bayview, Yvonne Winters of Kennett Square and Annette Peary of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 9 at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton, Md.
Interment was in the Townsend Cemetery.
Thomas C. Sullivan, Jr.
Thomas C. Sullivan, Jr. of Townsend died Wednesday, August 7, 2002 in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 58.
Mr. Sullivan was an operating engineer with Local #542 in Wilmington for about 20 years. He went on to become a special education teacher for Polytech High School and retired from the Delaware Autistic Program. He graduated from DeLaWarr High School and went on to earn his masters degree from Delaware State University. He was a member and past president of the Holloway Terrace Volunteer Fire Company.
He is survived by two daughters, Theresa Marie Hill (Duane) of Middletown and Karen Rebecca Sullivan (Steve Wilson) of Newark; two brothers, Michael Sullivan of Hockessin and Paul Sullivan of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Kathleen Price of Jacksonville, Fla.; his former wife, Jean Laibinis and her husband Albert G. Laibinis of Newark; his fiancé Donna Robinson of Seaford; and two granddaughters, Amanda Hill and Sarah Hill.
He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Sullivan in 1995.
Services were held Aug. 10 at the Chandler Funeral Home, Hockessin.
Interment was private.
John J. Forgione, Sr.
John J. Forgione, Sr. died Thursday, August 8, 2002, surrounded by his family. He was 71.
He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1986 after 30 years of service. He also worked for many years at the Brandywine Raceway and Delaware Park. He was past president and manager of the Wilmington Postal FCU. He served in the United States Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leona M. Johnston, in 1998.
Mr. Forgione is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy A. Forgione; his two sons, John J. Forgione, Jr. (Linda) of Newark and Philip A. Forgione (Linda) of Smyrna; a daughter, Joyce A. Connelly (Thomas) of Townsend; a brother, Reynold Forgione (Ann) of Scranton, Pa.; his grandchildren, Venus, Charles, Phillip, Janel, Jill, Thomas, Kyle, Charlene and Wayne; nine great grandchildren; and two nephews.
Services were held Aug. 13 at St. John the Beloved Church, Wilmington.
Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
