William F. Kopanski of Lewes died Thursday, August 8, 2002 at his home. He was 74.
Born in Wilmington to Joseph and Stella Chetkowski Kopanski, Mr. Kopanski retired in 1982 after 39 years of service with the ABEX Company as a pattern maker of brake shoes. He enjoyed fishing and carving wooden ducks.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Crystal M. Kopanski of Lewes; and daughters, Eileen Gibbs of Odessa, Joanne Kusik (Richard) of Bridgeville, Geraldine Emmett of Bear, Sandra Kearns (William) of Chester, Pa. and Bonnie Becker of Woodbury, Conn.; two brothers, Jack Kopanski and Michael Kopanski, both of Wilmington; an aunt, Elsie Chetkowski of Wilmington; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, his brother, Joe Kopanski preceded him in death.
Services were held Aug. 13 at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Lewes.
Interment was private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803-0163.

Mollie Moore Guessford Stewart
Mollie Moore Guessford Stewart of Middletown died Saturday, August 3, 2002 in Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center, Elkton, Md.. She was 90.
Mrs. Stewart was born and raised in Chesapeake City, Md. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and riding on her tractor. She was a member of the Middletown Moose Lodge and the M.O.T. Senior Center.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Guessford; her second husband, Gilbert Stewart; and her daughter Nellie A. Price .
She is survived by five children, Louise H. Galyen of Elkton, Md.; Rosalie Frazer, with whom she had lived for the last 20 years, Shirley Welch of Perryville, Md., Walter Guessford of Christiana, Pa. and Violet O'Neal of Middletown; 15 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 7 in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Interment was in the Townsend Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the M.O.T. Senior Center, 300 S. Scott St., Middletown, DE 19709.
Byard Butch Foraker
Byard Foraker of Newark died Thursday, August 1, 2002 in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 63.
Mr. Foraker had worked as a Security Guard at A.I DuPont Children s Hospital and also in the Nemours Building in Wilmington. He joined the Augustine Fire Co. when he was 16, which later became the Port Penn Fire Co. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and listening to Blue Grass music. He was well known for his storytelling ability.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Webber Foraker, in 2000.
Mr. Foraker is survived by three daughters, Angela Foraker, Cynthia Lavell and Elizabeth Foraker, all of Newark; five grandchildren, Randall, Ashlea, Jessica, Dillon and Gabrielle; a brother, Robert Foraker of Port Penn; a sister Dian Keen of Port Penn; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 5 in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Interment was private.
Mr. Foraker was involved with research projects for Hemophilia and the family suggests memorial contributions in his memory be made to the Delaware Institute of Hematology, County Commerce Office Park, 630 Churchmans Rd., Suite 103, Newark, DE 19702.
Louise S. Rowan
Louise S. Rowan of Milford, formerly of Townsend, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002. She was 94.
Mrs. Rowan was a retired bookkeeper for the State of Delaware, Treasurer's Office. She was a member for 80 years of the Asbury Methodist Church, Millington, Md.. She was a member and past President of the Townsend Women's Club and the Delaware Federation of Women's Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Rowan and her son, Joseph F. Rowan.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lillian H. Rowan of Lewes; two grandsons, Joseph F. Rowan, Jr. of Centreville, Md. and Hugh T. Rowan of Ellendale; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna S. Walls of Sudlersville, Md.
Services were held Aug. 2, 2002 in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Interment was in Old Drawyers Cemetery near Odessa.

Gail S. Hicks
Mrs. Hicks was born in Wilmington on July 6, 1946, daughter of the late Harry L. Grantland, Sr. and Myrtle Fahs Grantland. She was a 1964 graduate of William Penn High School. She earned her nursing degree from Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1967 and most recently was employed as a registered nurse with the Celotex Asbestos Trust.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Willis R. Hicks; a son, Ian Campbell Hicks of New Castle; two brothers, Harry L. Grantland, Jr., of Middletown and Ronald Grantland, of Smyrna; and a granddaughter, Sarah.
A funeral service was held at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle, on Thursday, Aug. 4. Interment followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Robert M. Johnson
He was born July 1, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late James Herbert and Edna Sophia (Montgomery) Johnson. Mr. Johnson was raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Penn State University in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture. He served in the U.S. Army medical division as a dental assistant during WWII. When he returned from the war, he attended the University of Delaware, where he received a Master s degree in education in 1967. His early years of employment were in sales for a family-owned wholesale yard goods distributor based in Philadelphia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Nix Johnson, who died in 1997. He is survived by two sons, James Charles Johnson, and his wife, Bonnie Lee Sampson, of Bridgeville, and David Montgomery Johnson, and his wife, Sue Lee Martin, of Odessa; his four grandchildren, Emily Elizabeth, Jacqueline Lee, Ryan Montgomery and Michael Montgomery; and his twin brother, James Richard Johnson, and his wife, Mary, of Oreland, Pa.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Union United Methodist Church, Market & Laws streets, Bridgeville. The Rev. Gary Tulak officiated. Interment was in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Pete Schaefgen
Pete was owner and operator of Northeastern Tree and Landscape in Wilmington. He had been working in the tree and landscaping field for 20 years and owned his own business for the past seven years.
He is survived by his wife, Holly; his son, Peter John "Petey" Schaefgen; his stepdaughter, Miranda Lemon; his parents, John and Laura Schaefgen, of Wilmington; two brothers, John Schaefgen, Jr., and his wife, Kathy, of Potomac, Md., and Robert Schaefgen, and his wife, Karin Sweeney, of Townsend; and six sisters, Dr. Elizabeth Coetzee, of Columbus, Ga., Susan Schaefgen, and her husband, Tom Burns, of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Madalyn Schaefgen, and her husband, Bob Baumert, of Allentown, Pa., Mary Heberling, of Wilmington, Kathryn Schultz, and her husband, Bill, of Wilmington, and Caroline Dewberry, and her husband, Brandon, of Huntsville, Ala.
A celebration of his life was held on Friday, Aug. 5, at the Chandler Funeral Homes, Wilmington. His family will privately put him to rest.

Malvin E. VanHorn, Jr.
Buck was born at home in Townsend on February 28, 1938, son of Malvin E., Sr., and Ann VanHorn. Buck worked at Atlas Chemical in New Castle from 1959 to 1969. He then went to the Police Academy and joined the Delaware State Police in May 1969, which he served through 1977. After leaving the State Police, Buck went on to Park View RV Center of Smyrna, in 1977, where he later became executive vice president and general manager before retiring in 2004.
Buck was a loving a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and friend. He enjoyed spending his time at the beach, Spence's Bazaar and special time with his family. He attended Townsend Free Will Baptist Church, where he had made many special bonds.
Buck was preceded in death by his father, Malvin E. VanHorn, Sr.; and his son, Malvin E. VanHorn, III. Buck is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" VanHorn; his mother, Ann VanHorn, of Townsend; two sons, Michael VanHorn, and his wife, Lisa, and Mark VanHorn, and his wife, Laurie, both of Townsend,; daughter-in-law, Lisa VanHorn, of Smyrna; six grandsons, Christopher VanHorn, and his fianc e, Traci Yearwood, of Middletown, Michael VanHorn, Jr., of Townsend, Brandon and Shane VanHorn, both of Middletown, Adam and Seth Grimes, both of Earleville Md.; and five granddaughters, Nicole VanHorn, of Townsend, Amy Grimes, and her fianc , Chris, of Elkton, Samantha, Candace and Jessica Wyre, all of Smyrna.
A service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Townsend Free Will Baptist Church, Townsend. Interment was in Townsend Cemetery.

Jeffrey B. Eide
Mr. Eide was born and raised in Townsend and graduated from Middletown High School. He also attended college at Delaware Technical & Community College in Dover. Jeff was employed as a credit analyst at Bank of America located in Dover. He had a passion for sports cars and loved working on his own. He also loved spending time with his niece and nephew.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Treva and Bill Bruchey; and paternal grandparents, Grace and Tore Eide. He is survived by his parents, Brian and Julie; brother, Eric and his wife, Stacy; brother, Christopher; nephew, Justice; and niece, Marissa, all of Townsend; and special friend, Hollie Thompson. He is also survived by a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Family and friends are invited to visit with the family from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Price Hall, located at 115 Cleaver Farm Road, Middletown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, also at Price Hall. Interment will be at Townsend Cemetery.

Jean Clarke Cushing
Mrs. Cushing was a World War II Army Veteran and a retired nurse. She was an active member of National Pony Club in Middletown and Unionville, Pa. For many years, Mrs. Cushing participated in the Middletown and Chesapeake City communities. Mrs. Cushing befriended animals and was especially fond of horses and cats. All who knew or met her delighted in her sense of humor and her stories. Her parting will leave a void for her family and friends. She gave us wonderful memories which enliven us with smiles and laughter always.
She is survived by her family, Clarke and Susan Cushing and their sons, Josh and Andrew; John and Melissa Cushing and their daughters, Mindy, Melanie and Ashley; Laurie Cushing and Kari Quevli and their daughter, Lili.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment was held on Wednesday, Aug. 10, in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, Md.

Patricia I. Street
Mrs. Street had been employed in the healthcare field as a nurse's aide and homecare provider. Her hobbies included cooking, home decorating and a love for green plants and flowers.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Eddie "Ray" Street; their son, Aaron Christopher Street; mother, Callie Blevins; brothers, Curtis and Jack Blevins; sisters, Lisa Kaylor and Bonnie Blevins-Albert; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service and burial will be held privately.
Gerald A. Schmidgall, Sr.
Mr. Schmidgall was born September 6, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late Harry and Mildred Rudisil Schmidgall. Mr. Schmidgall worked for Johnson Controls in Middletown for 25 years and also owned and operated J&S Hobbies for 30 years. He was a chartered member of both the First State and NorDel Model Railroad Clubs. He was a United States Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Rae Schmidgall; a son, G. Allen Schmidgall Jr., of Soquel, Calif.; a daughter, Pamela S. Baumbach, and her husband, Paul, of Newark; and a grandson, Michael F. Baumbach, also of Newark.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Faries Funeral Chapel, Smyrna. Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.

William H. Abernathy Sr.
Bill was born on Oct. 10, 1934, in Bradford, Ohio, to the late Herschel Eugene Abernathy and Lavina Viola Hartle Abernathy. He moved to Delaware in 1955 after serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He worked in the Electric Meter Department at Delmarva Power and Light Company for more than 38 years and retired in 1994. Bill will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved working in his yard and garden, and his greatest joy was making anyone around him laugh and smile.
His parents, his brothers Richard, Tom and Paul and sisters Doris, Helen, and Lila predeceased him. His son Steven passed away in 1965. Surviving Bill is his devoted wife of 51 years, Janet Laws Abernathy, of Newark; his daughter, Pam Lawson and her husband Dave; his son, Bill and his wife Lisa; and his son Mike and his wife Cathy, all of Middletown.
Also, six grandchildren survive him, Scott and his wife Kimberly, and his great-granddaughter Emma; Kim and her husband Brandon Dowell; Amy Lawson; and, Jordan, Michael and Gary Abernathy. His sister, Nancy Miller of Upland, Calif., his brother, Joseph and his wife Faye, of Bradford, Ohio, along with in-laws Lina Abernathy of Bradford, Norman and Jean Laws, Earl and Barbara Laws, Annabelle Weldin, Jane Laws, Shirley and Victor Amato, and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
A funeral service was held at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Bear, on Aug. 5. Interment followed in St. Georges Cemetery.

LoRean Hummel
The daughter of respected United Methodist minister and seminary professor the Rev. Merl Harner and music educator Ruth Harner, Mrs. Hummel graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, with a major in Sociology in 1949. She was a member of the Tau Epsilon Mu Talisman sorority. LoRean worked as a Title I reading aide in the Newark School District in the 1970s before beginning work as the office manager for the Thomas More Oratory Catholic Student Center at the University of Delaware in Newark in the early 1980s.
Mrs. Hummel would remain an indispensable part of the Oratory staff for nearly 25 years, retiring in 2005. She was an amateur nutrition expert, avid reader of mysteries and other fiction, traveled to the United Kingdom four times, and enjoyed gardening, art, music, animals, and movies. She was a kind and generous soul who will be missed.
She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Studer, of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Betty Dybvig, of Dayton, Ohio, and Linda Pendell and her husband Bob, of Black Mountain, N.C.; son, Lee and his wife Donna, of Townsend; son, Mike and his wife Susan, of Berwyn Heights, Md.; daughter, Mary Lisa and her husband Scott, of Wolcott, Vt.; and beloved grandchildren, Isaac, Nathanael, Elijah, and Natalie.
A memorial was held July 27 at the Oratory.
