Mr. Way was born on Oct. 23, 1950, in Elkton to the late Sally Orr and Donald Way Sr. For many years, Harold was self employed at A.W. & Son in Elkton. He was also known as an outdoorsman who loved rock fishing, deer hunting, crabbing and spending time with all his grandchildren, who he loved very much. Everyone will dearly miss and always love him.
Survivors include his son, James H. Way Jr. and his wife Jasmine, of Elkton; daughter, Shanna Stout and her husband Greg, of Perryville, Md.; brother, Donald Way Jr. and his wife Kathy, of Planet City, Fla.; sisters, Carol Dennis, of North East Md., Vicki Orr, of Smyrna, and Patty Taylor and her husband Tommy, of Middletown; and many grandchildren, Justin, Kerstin, Tyler, Dafny, Sierra, Anna Jeanie, Little Greg, Amber and Kayla.
A memorial service was held Aug. 6 at R. T. Foard Funeral Home, Chesapeake City, Md.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold’s name to Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 2332, Elkton, MD 21921-2332.
Myra Jones Fisher
She formerly resided in Aston, Pa., and was a graduate of Chester High School, Chester, Pa. She was also a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, Canada.
Myra sang on Horn & Hardarts Children’s Radio Hour and in USO events during World War II. She was also a featured performer with both the Rose Valley Chorus and the Brandywiners in Pennsylvania. Myra was a five-year resident of Green Valley Pavilion in Smyrna, and served as the president of the resident’s council.
She is survived by a daughter, Margo Eisenhower, of Hernando Beach, Fla.; a son, Robert Fisher, of Dagsboro; a brother, Donald Jones, of Glen Mills, Pa.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, Aug. 10, at 5 p.m., at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Aston, Pa.

Walter M. Smith
Walter retired from the DuPont Company in 1976 after 26 years of service. He then started his own photography business, which he had for many years. Mr. Smith was very proud that he served his country in both the Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Walter, his three brothers and his sister served in the military at the same time. In his spare time, he built homes in the Red Lion area.
His loving wife of 58 years, Lillian A. Dawson Smith, passed away in 1998. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sandra L. Toensmeyer and her husband Ulrich, of Bear, and Linda A. Gallaher and her husband Gary, of Bear; two brothers, Lester Smith, of Wilmington, and Gilbert Smith, of Middletown; and three sisters, Lorraine Siltzer, Ellen Finch, and Bessie Ross, all of Wilmington. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Debra Resner and her husband Michael, Diane Hogan and her husband Lawrence, Scott Gallaher and his wife Vanessa, and Steven Gallaher and his wife Erin; along with six great-grandchildren.
A service was held Aug. 8 at the McCrery Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

William James ‘Jim’ Schmidt
A Mass of Christian Burial for William James “Jim” Schmidt, 79, of Dover, was held on Monday, Aug. 6 at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, Dover. Mr. Schmidt was former editor of the Middletown Transcript.
Mr. Schmidt died after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 in his home.
Mr. Schmidt was born and raised in Camden/Wyoming, the son of the late William and Louise McCommons.
Upon graduation from Caesar Rodney High School in 1939, he joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served during WWII as a photographer in Germany and Normandy until his discharge in 1949.
He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
He was a reporter for the Gainesville Sun; did public relations for the Tampa Chamber of Commerce in Florida; a reporter for the Wilmington Journal Evening Edition in Wilmington; and was an editor for the Air Force Times.
His career took him to Ottawa, Ill., as director of the ASSHO Road Test Project.
He and his fmaily relocated to Arlington, Va., where he worked as an information specialist for the Department of Commerce.
After resettling in the Dover area, he worked as director of public relations with the General Foods Corporation.
His journalism career included being a reporter, writer, news editor and advertising specialist with the Delaware State News.
Upon retiring from the Delaware State News, Mr. Schmidt was a writer for the Dover Post Company and also was editor of the Middletown Transcript.
He was so well received in Middletown, that the mayor and citizens proclaimed Jan. 6, 1992 “Jim Schmidt Day.”
He will be best remembered for his original weekly column titled, “Schmidtsophrenia,” in which he crafted tales of growing up in “Our Town,” Wyoming. The columns later became the content of his current book, titled, “The Best Little Outhouse in Town.”
Mr. Schmidt was a well-respected, active member of the community. He was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he touched those he met.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Barbour Schmidt of Dover; five children and their spouses, Richard E. and Alma Schmidt of Landenberg, Pa., W. Robert and Christine Schmidt of Broken Arrow, Okla., William James Jr. and Dinny Schmidt of Owasso, Okla., Steven B. and Barbara Schmidt and Kathryn L. Schmidt, all of Dover; and nine grandchildren, N. Kristian, Kimberly, Jeffrey Townsend, Cara, Daniel, Ryan, Stephanie, Aaron, and Rebecca.
Arrangements were by the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, Dover.
Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Viola B. Carter
Viola B. Carter of Middletown died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at home. She was 88.
Mrs. Carter and her husband farmed in New Jersey and moved to Delaware in 1947. They continued their farming operation for 40 years in the Middletown Area.
She was a member of Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Middletown.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Howard B. Carter, in 1978.
She is survived by four children, F. Ella Patterson of Elmer, N. J., Charles M. Carter and his wife, Suzanne, Betty C. Piser and her husband, George, and Howard B. Carter, III and his wife, Barbara, all of Middletown; a sister, Emma B. Cassaday of Pitman, N. J.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 8 at Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Middletown.
Burial was in Forest Cemetery, Middletown.

Mildred E. Dawson
Mildred E. Dawson of Newark, formerly of Claymont, died Thursday, August 2, 2001 at Union Hospital, Elkton, Md. She was 84.
Mrs. Dawson was a lifelong homemaker.
She is survived by five children, Mildred A. Testoni of Elkton, Md., Walter J. Dawson, Jr. of Newark, James F. Dawson of Rehoboth, Harry P. Dawson of Townsend and Kathryn Haigh of Rehoboth; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services and burial were private.

William Paul Frey
William Paul Frey of Newark died Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at home. He was 77.
Mr. Frey had been a machinist with the former Morton Salt, (later French’s), in Newark, retiring in 1989 after 19 years of service. He was a Life Member of Aetna Fire Company. He was an avid Phillies fan and he enjoyed fixing lawn mowers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth R. (Shockley) Frey, in 1984.
He is survived by six children, Paul L. Frey and his wife, Dolores, of Woodbury, N.J., Paul D. Frey and his wife, Linda, William R. Frey and his wife, Christine, and Mary A. Grybowski, all of Newark, and Susan L. Hutchinson and her husband, Robert, and Ora M. Nichols and her husband, Charles, all of Middletown; two sisters, Margaret Clark of Elkton, Md. and Pauline Lane of Calif.; two brothers, Walter Frey of Smyrna and Louis Lane of Wilmington; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services were held Aug. 6 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Newark.
Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Blanch S. Mahala
Blanch S. Mahala of Elkton, Md. died Tuesday, July 31, 2001. She was 68.
She is survived by a three children, Jimmie D. Slagle of Elkton, Md., Janice M. Marshall of Middletown and Diane Brooks of Newark; her mother; four brothers; a sister; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Aug. 3 at Hicks Home for Funerals, Elkton, Md.
Jayne P. Noble
Jayne P. Noble of Wilmington died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at home. She was 78.
Mrs. Noble was an insurance broker with Johnson & Higgins Insurance company in Wilmington, retiring in 1992 after 30 years of service. She was a graduate of Central High School and the Lackawana Business School, both in Scranton, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Noble, in 1988.
She is survived by a daughter, Paula M. Noble, with whom she lived; a brother, Paul Pipher of Townsend; two granddaughters, Megan and Brittany; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 8 at Atonement Methodist Church, Philadelphia, Pa.
Interment was in Silverbrook Memorial Park.

Daniel R. “Danny” Woods
Daniel R. Woods of Newark died Saturday, July 28, 2001 at home. He was 66.
Mr. Woods was an operating engineer with Local 542 since 1961. He was a US Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by a daughter, Dineen Woods of Newark; two sons, Daniel M. Woods of Middletown and Donald J. Woods of New Castle; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 2 at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, Newport.
Interment was private.
Carl S. Chopack, Sr.
Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Mr. Chopack served his country as a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked as a steelburner at the former Phoenix Steel Corporation in Claymont for 10 years, retiring in 1979. Mr. Chopack was the former manager of the Delaware Diamonds Softball Team, Newark.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Giuliarelli Chopack, in 1980.
He is survived by four children, Karen L. Harris (Don) and Joanne M. Antonio (Joe), both of Middletown, Carl S. Chopack, Jr. (Janet) of Newark and Stephen A. Chopack of New Castle; a sister, Margaret Musto (Rocco) of Wilkes Barre, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Vera Lynn, Kelly, Josie, Dominic, Vinny, C.J., Kyle, Andrew, and Mike; a great-granddaughter, Carley; and long-time companion, Maureen Murphy.
Services were held Aug. 3 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Wilmington Manor, New Castle.
Interment was private.

Edwin Harrison Schwatka
Mr. Schwatka had worked in the Newark Parts Depot of Chrysler Corporation, retiring in 1988 after 39 years of service. He was a past member of the Townsend Volunteer Fire Company and had played on the Townsend baseball team. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, visiting with friends in his neighborhood, and bird watching and feeding.
Mr. Schwatka was also an avid baseball fan. A US Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during combat in Okinawa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine L. Schwatka; a son, Andy R. Schwatka; a brother, Carl Schwatka; and a stepdaughter, Beverly J. Teat.
He is survived by his children, Edwin H. Schwatka, Jr. of Townsend; Irma S. New of Irmo, S.C., Karen L. Leach of New Castle, and Frances M. McCaffery of Newark; a stepdaughter, Joanne M. Ford of Townsend; a brother, Clarence Schwatka of Townsend; a sister, Eva Krouse of Dover; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services were Aug. 1 at Spicer-Mulliking Funeral Home, Wilmington Manor, New Castle.
Interment was private.

Dolores M. “Mick” McMahon Graney
Mrs. Graney was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Joseph J. Graney in 1993.
She attended St. Paul's Grade School and was a 1946 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School where she remained a parishioner.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph T. of Laurel, Md. and Martin A. of Middletown; four daughters, Mary Christine Brower of Winterhaven, Fla., Colleen M. Lodge, Marie A. Graney and Michelle A. Thompson, all of Wilmington; a sister, Rita A. Ford; two brothers, Martin J. McMahon and J. Timothy McMahon, all of Wilmington; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 2 at St. Elizabeth's Church, Wilmington.
Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
