Blanche R. Dixon

Mrs. Dixon was born in Newark, the daughter of the late Harry and Elsie Ryan Reed.

She was employed by Leeds Travelware, Clayton, for 20 years, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Dixon enjoyed crocheting and doing craftwork with her husband.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Dixon Jr., in 2000.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas Dixon, at home; two sons, Bernard Dixon of Laurel, Md. and Gregory Dixon of Smyrna; a daughter, Lorraine Newill of Nottingham, Pa.; a brother, Leonard Reed of Smyrna; a sister, Rosalie Henderson of Townsend; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Services were held July 16 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

Interment was in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Andr D. Walker

Andr D. Walker, of Middletown, died suddenly Wednesday, July 10, 2002 after an accident on a scooter near Townsend. He was 16.

He was a 10th grade student at the Paul M. Hodgson Vo-Tech High School in Glasgow, a member of the Middletown Boys and Girls Club, a choreographer for the Middletown Dance Crew and a member of many other organizations.

He is survived by his parents, Beverly Walker and Kenneth Bell; grandparents, Audrey and James Walker, Bonita Bell and Melvin Rowe; a great-grandmother, Jeanie Bell; godmother, Doris Waters; two sisters, Domonique and Audrey; a brother, Adrian; six paternal siblings; aunts; uncles; and many favorite cousins and friends.

Services were held July 16 at the Olive B. Loss Elementary School, Bear.

Interment was in the Bohemia Manor Cemetery in Chesapeake City, Md.

Arrangements by the Bell Memorial Chapel.

Leo P. Samson

Leo P. Samson, of McDaniel Crest, died Thursday, July 11, 2002. He was 89.

Mr. Samson was born in Altoona, Pa. Sept. 1, 1912 to the late Peter and Antoinette Samson. He served in the US Army during WWII and upon returning, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1954, Mr. Samson moved to Wilmington and worked for A.I. DuPont, Chestnut Run, where he retired in 1977.

Mr. Samson was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus (Bishop Fitzmaurice Council-4th degree). He also sang with the Scola Cantorum Men's Choral Group. He was a devoted lector, Eucharist minister and usher for St. Mary Magdalen Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Santella, and Matilda Kuiawa; and a brother, Richard of Altoona, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen Samson; a sister, S. Vera Wroblewski of Altoona, Pa.; a brother, Stanley of Cleveland, Ohio; five children, Arnold Samson (Beverly) of Townsend, Elaine Simmons (Bruce) of Elkton, Md., Leonetta Doyle (Creig) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Gerard Samson (Nancy) and Gerald Samson (Genia Dixon) of Wilmington; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Services were held July 15 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Wilmington.

Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Concord Pike and Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803.

Theresa McCaffery Toner

Theresa McCaffery Toner, of New Castle, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, surrounded by her family. She was 74.

She was born Sept. 22, 1927. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church.

Mrs. Toner was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John Joseph Toner, Sr., in 1992; and her parents, Georgina Palmer McCaffery and James McCaffery of New Castle.

She is survived by her 12 children, John J. Toner, Jr. (Kathy) of New Castle, Joseph Toner (Delia) of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Mary Thomas of Newark, Patricia Thomas of Delaware City, Charlotte Toner, Mark Toner, Loretta Toner, Theresa Toner, Edith Evans (Donald), Georgina Toner, Francis Toner and James Toner (Susan), all of New Castle; two sisters, Ann McCaffery Williams and Catherine McCaffery Rees (Frank), both of New Castle; a sister-in-law, Mary Toner Arp of Chicago, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held July 16 at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, New Castle.

Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter's Workforce, 521 Harmony St., New Castle, DE 19720.

Lida M. Green

Lida M. Green, of Carlisle, Pa., formerly of Wilmington, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at her home. She was 84.

Mrs. Green was a retired receptionist for Angerstein's and before that she worked for Hearn Brothers Supermarket. Mrs. Green was a member of the First Alliance Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond R. Green, in 1984.

She is survived by three sons, Raymond R. Green, Jr. of Wilmington, Ronald R. Green of Tocca, Ga. and the Rev. Richard R. Green of Lower Burrell, Pa.; two daughters, Viola Price of New Port Richey, Fla. and Lida May Morris of Middletown; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services were held July 17 at the First Alliance Church, Hockessin.

Interment was in the Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Green's memory to Chapel Pointe at Carlisle (organ fund), 770 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA, 17013.

Mary Anna Grinnage
Mary Anna Todd Grinnage, of Middletown, died peacefully on Friday, July 1, 2005, at Kent General Hospital. She was 81.

She was the daughter of the late Oscar C. and Clara Blackiston Todd. Mary did domestic work in the Newark area. She was married to the late Solomon Grinnage.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Wendell A. Grinnage; one daughter-in-law, Sandra D. Grinnage; one brother, Norman Todd, Sr.; one sister, Cassie T. Smallwood; four sisters-in-law; one devoted sister-in-law, Betty B. Todd; a host of nieces and nephews; and two devoted nieces, Thelma Queen and Shirlette Roane.

A funeral service was held on Friday, July 8, at Dale United Methodist Church, Middletown. Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle.

Kathryn K. Schmolze
Kathryn K. Schmolze, of Dover, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2005. She was 95.

Mrs. Schmolze was a native of New York City, N.Y., born May 18, 1910. She graduated from Hunter College in 1931, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Sorority. Her late husband, Howard E.C. Schmolze, was senior master and registrar/college advisor at St. Andrew's School, Middletown and Kathryn was his assistant until her retirement in 1973.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmolze enjoyed the raising and showing AKC long-haired dachshunds to nine championships. Kathryn was a founding member of the Middletown Branch of the American Association of University Women. Upon Mr. Schmolze s retirement, the Schmolzes lived in Middletown, where Kathryn was an Alter Guild member at St. Anne's Church. Mr. Schmolze died in 1987. In 1993, Kathryn moved to Westminster Village in Dover, and joined Christ Church there.

She leaves a niece, Marie Becker of Oceanside, N.Y.; three other nieces; and two nephews; as well as Mr. Schmolze's nephew, Robert Schmolze, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and several great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 15 E. Green St., Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kathryn's name to St. Andrews School 350 Noxontown Road, Middletown, DE 19709.

Elizabeth A. Poffenberger
Elizabeth A. "Libby" Poffenberger, of Smyrna, formerly of Bear, died on Tuesday, July 5, 2005. She was 89.

Born in Wilmington on October 9, 1915, Miss Poffenberger was the daughter of the late David D. Poffenberger and Margaret Green Poffenberger. For 27 years, she was employed with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Elsmere, retiring in 1969 as a clerk in the dental department. Miss Poffenberger was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Catherine May Petkiewicz of Wilmington, Frank M. Bullock of Bear, Ruth Ann Marge of Odessa, Charles D. Bullock of Bear, Elizabeth Ann Ashley of New Castle and T. Scott Bullock of Bear.

A funeral service was held at on Tuesday, July 12, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle. Interment followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720.

William J. Baker
William J. Baker, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. He was 82.

He was a retired pier supervisor for the Getty Oil and Refinery Company. Mr. Baker was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. and served with the Naval Reserves during WWII. He was a member of the Indian River Yacht Club and loved being on the water.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Helen (Stewart) Baker; and a brother, Jack Baker. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann D. Baker; two sons, William J. Baker and his wife, Linda, of Middletown, and Thom Baker of New York, N.Y.; a daughter, Denise Ann Sherwood and her husband, Jeffrey, of New Castle; brother, Richard Baker; five grandchildren, Kelley, Jeffrey and Matthew Sherwood, Brittney and William J. Baker, III.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, July 11, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Millsboro. Interment will be in St. George's Episcopal Cemetery near Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Parish Office, 202 Edward St., Georgetown, DE 19947.

Helen T. Erne
Helen T. Erne, of Elsmere, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 8, 2005. She was 74.

Mrs. Erne was born in Queens Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of Harmon and Edna G. Thompson. Helen graduated from Chester High School in 1949. She retired in 1993 from the former Diamond State Telephone Company after many years of service. Mrs. Erne attended the Church of God of Prophecy in New Castle and was a member and longtime secretary of Local Units of the former Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mrs. Erne was predeceased by two brothers, Harmon C. Thompson, Jr., and Claude W. Thompson; and a sister, Christine Miller. Surviving is her loving husband of 53 years, Robert L. Erne; two sons, Gary L. Erne, of Hockessin, and Glenn R. Erne, and his wife, Kelly A. Erne, of Bear; two sisters, Marie Streaker, of Middletown, and Evelyn Taylor, of Perryhall, Md.; and two grandsons, Colin and Brendan Erne. Survivors also include a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service was held on Tuesday, July 12, at the McCrery Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of God of Prophecy, 34 Kings Ave., New Castle, DE 19720; or to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

John F. Reilly, Sr.
John F. Reilly, Sr., of Newark, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, July 9, 2005. He was 75.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Reilly was the son of the late John J. and Alice (Maguire) Reilly. He boxed in the Philadelphia Police Athletic League and, at age 21, was the Pennsylvania Golden Gloves Champion. Later, he fought and defeated Frankie Sandano who later became an Olympic contender in 1949. John served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Reilly was a chemical operator at several local businesses, retiring in 1992 from Rodel, Inc. in Newark where he was employed for 15 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, God's Precious Children, the Blue Army and the Third Order of the Two Hearts. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael's Council and a fourth-degree member of the Cardinal Gibbons Assembly, where he served in the Color Corps.

His wife, Marcella Higgins Reilly, died in 1986. He is survived by his sons, John J., Jr., of Newark, Stephen A., of Harrisonville, Mo., Joseph E., of Alloway, N.J., Lawrence A., of Rising Sun, Md., Daniel J., of Bear and Christopher A., of Bear; his daughter, Marcella A. Reilly, of Middletown; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Patricia Chestnut of Drexel Hill, Pa. and Mary Jane Huber of Folcroft, Pa.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday morning, July 12. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Filomena A. Cerminaro
Filomena A. (Vasso) Cerminaro, of Wilmington, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She died in the same graceful way she lived her life, quietly and simply. She was 77.

A native Delawarean, Mrs. Cerminaro was born in Wilmington May 24, 1928, daughter of the late John and Carmela Vasso. She was a talented homemaker and devoted her life to caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her leisure time, Mrs. Cerminaro greatly enjoyed crafts, especially needlework.

Her beloved husband, best friend and partner in life, Frank T. Cerminaro, Sr., died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her son, Frank T. Cerminaro, Jr.; and sister, Louise Miller. She is survived by three children, David K. Cerminaro, and his wife, Judi, of Odessa, Susan E. Maisano, and her husband, David, of Wilmington and Lisa L. Thompson, and her husband, Jim, of Bear; daughter-in-law, Janice Cerminaro, of Newark; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15, at Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Grant S. Kiloski
Grant S. Kiloski, of Smyrna, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at home. He was 57.

Mr. Kiloski was born August 16, 1947 in Wilmington to the late Stephen and Evva Tweed Kiloski. He was a member of IBEW Local #313 of Wilmington, St. Polycarp s Roman Catholic Church in Smyrna, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Sellersville, Pa. Moose Lodge. Mr. Kiloski was very charitable and supported the Salvation Army, the Mission of the Charity, Feed the Children, St. Jude's Hospital and the Propogation of Faith. His hobbies included hunting, boating, fishing, collecting trains, traveling and gardening; but most of all, he loved to go crabbing, cooking and eating them with his friends.

He is survived by a brother, Dale M. Kiloski, of New Castle; a niece, Denise M. Kiloski, and nephew, Edward M. Kiloski, both of New Castle; and his longtime girlfriend, Vickie Shaffner, of Townsend.

Friends are invited at attend the memorial service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main St., Smyrna. Burial will be private.

Janet P. West
Janet P. West, of Middletown, passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon, July 10, 2005. She was 67.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick B. West, in 1997. Janet is survived by her children, Jack D. Thorpe, and his wife, Lori, of Middletown, Janice Burns, and her husband, Thomas, of Townsend, Joyce Kindbeiter, and her husband, James, of Middletown; her sister, Mary Anne Herscher, of Millsboro; and her grandchildren, Kelly, Stephon and Shannon Thorps, and April Kindbeiter.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, on Thursday, July 14, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, July 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Solomon T.H. Ho

Solomon T.H. Ho, of Townsend, died Sunday July 7, 2002 after suffering an apparent food choking incident on Saturday while in the Middletown Square Shopping Center. He was 12.

Solomon attended the Middletown Middle School where he completed the 7th grade. He was a huge Philadelphia Eagles football fan, and also enjoyed toy trucks and cars such as the Dodge Ram and the Viper.

He is survived by his parents Mei Hsien Ho and James M. Williams; two brothers, Josh Ho and Sammy Ho; a sister, Crystal Ho; his paternal grandparents, Jack and Carol Williams of Ironton, Mo.; maternal grandfather, Joe Ho of Edison, N.J.; maternal great-grandmother Shu-Yin Yao of San Jose, Calif.; and paternal great-grandmother Ruby Arnold of Ironton, Mo.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 13 at noon in the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark DE 19702 where a visitation will be held beginning at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent c/o the funeral home to assist the family with funeral expenses.
