Mary E. ‘Sis’ Huffer
Mary E. “Sis” Huffer of Cecilton, Md., died on Sunday, June 10, 2007, in her home. She was 57.

Mrs. Huffer was born on Nov. 4, 1949, daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Hessey Getshall. She was a lifetime resident of Cecil County where she was raised in Fredericktown. Sis was a 1967 graduate of Bohemia Manor High School. After her married in 1971, she moved to Cecilton.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Edward ‘Hollywood’ Huffer Jr.; a daughter, Susan Cooper, and her husband, Mike, of Cecilton, Md.; a brother, John F. Getshall, of Alexandria, Va.; and two grandchildren, Steven and Kaitlyn Cooper.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, Md. Burial will be in Galena Cemetery.

Memorials may be offered to Seasons Hospice or Autism Speaks in honor of her granddaughter, Kaitlyn, c/o the funeral home.

William P. Fisher, Jr.

William P. Fisher, Jr., of Glasgow, died suddenly Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at home. He was 82.

Mr. Fisher was a Navy veteran of WWII serving aboard the USS New Jersey and was a member of the USS Jersey Battleship Alumni group. He was a 1939 graduate of P.S. duPont High School and retired from the City of Wilmington, where he had worked for 20 years as an accountant. He also retired from Zallea Brothers, formerly of Wilmington, in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Olive; three sons, William Fisher (Judith) of Wilmington, Robert Fisher (Donna) of Landenberg, Pa. and Curtis Fisher (Melissa) of Middletown; four grandsons; and four granddaughters.

Services were held June 8 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Newark.

Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 200 Marrows Rd., Brookside, Newark, DE 19713.

Harry (Abele) Sentman

Harry Sentman, of New Castle, died Saturday, June 1, 2002. He was 76.

Mr. Sentman was the foster son of the late Harry and Annie Abele and was a lifelong resident of New Castle. He attended Carrie Downie Elementary School and William Penn High School. He retired from the Delaware State Highway Department and had also been a security guard.

He was a member of the Eagles Club on Philadelphia Pike and enjoyed his CB radio and watching the boats at the end of 3rd Street in Battery Park, New Castle.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol Hall Sentman; a son, Robert Sentman, of New Castle; a daughter, Ann Sayers, of Newark; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother, Edmond Rickards, of Bermuda Dune, Calif.

Services and burial in Glebe Cemetery were private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Compassionate Care Hospice, 23 W. Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE 19804.

Charles Bernard Anthony

Charles Bernard Anthony, of St. Cloud, Fla., died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at the Orlando V.A. Nursing Home. He was 73.

Mr. Anthony was a chemical operator for I.C.I. Chemical for 25 years and then worked at Wal-Mart in St. Cloud before retiring.

Born in Montgomery, W. Va., he moved to central Florida in 1976 from Townsend.

He was an Army veteran serving during WWII, Vietnam and the Korean Conflict.

While a Delaware resident, he was an active member of the Middletown Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He also served as the Steel Workers Union president for four years.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Anna T. Anthony; a daughter, Valerie Vargo, of St. Cloud, Fla.; a son, Rickie Anthony, of Townsend; and five grandchildren.

Services were held June 12 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Fla.

Interment was in the chapel of light mausoleum at Osceola Memory Gardens Cemetery with full Military Honors, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church, Middletown.

Frances P. Heinold Newell

Frances P. Heinold Newell, of Dover, formerly of Smyrna, died Tuesday June 4, 2002. She was 73.

She was born in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of the late Harry and Bertha Riggs Pierce. She moved to Delaware as a child.

Mrs. Newell was a 1947 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna, and was crowned Miss Smyrna in 1946.

She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years and had formerly been Postmaster in Clayton, Middletown, and Lincoln, where she served until her retirement in 1990.

Mrs. Newell was a member of NAPUS, and of NAPUS Retired Postmasters. In addition, she was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Smyrna, and had sung in the choirs for St. Peters’ Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna and the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.

She enjoyed music, needlework and baking.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, C. Fred Heinold Jr., in 1968; and her second husband, David I. Newell, in 1991.

She is survived by a son, Larry P. Heinold (Allyson), of Newark; two daughters, Beth Wessell (Bob), of Clayton and Linda Muelenaer (Brian), of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Eleanor Justice, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren, Rick Wessell, Kimberly and Kevin Heinold and Morgan and Evan Muelenaer; and a dear friend, Bertha Cubbage, Anamosa, Iowa.

Services were held June 10 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Smyrna.

Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Community Food Pantry, c/o Asbury United Methodist Church, PO Box 330, Smyrna, 19977 or to a charity of your choice.

J. Susan Hoover

J. Susan Hoover, of Delaware City, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was 51.

Mrs. Hoover had been an executive secretary with the Nemours Foundation for 15 years.

She is survived by her husband, Benson B. Hoover; two children, Gordon F. Winegar, III, of Newark, and Elissa M. Winegar, of Delaware City; three step-children, Michael S. Hoover, Ryan C. Hoover and Maureen A. Hoover, all of New Castle; her mother and stepfather, Lois E. and John E. Dail of Mill Spring, N.C.; three siblings, Paul E. Thomspon, Bobbie Carl R. Thompson and Patricia A. Thompson, all of Tampa, Fla.; her maternal grandmother, Susan A. Lancaster of Felda, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Thompson.

Services were held June 7 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Wilmington Manor, New Castle.

Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

Robert E. “Bob” Lewis

Robert E. Lewis, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at his home surrounded by family. He was 74.

Mr. Lewis retired in 1996 after more than 37 years as an insurance agent with State Farm Insurance Company. He was a Navy veteran serving during WWII.

For the past 10 years, Mr. Lewis has been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also active in his community serving as Vice President of his Neighborhood Civic Association and coaching Little League baseball.

He enjoyed photography, woodworking, boating and the outdoors. He was a 1953 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received his CLU from Bryn Mawr College.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dee; a son, Eric E. Lewis (Alison), of Middletown; a brother, John, of Quakertown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Macie Glynn, Megan Elizabeth and Sean Robert; and his dog, Sheeba.

Services were held June 10 at the Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, Newport.

Interment was in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

William F. Jones, Sr.

William F. Jones, Sr., of New Castle, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at his home, surrounded by family. He was 73.

Mr. Jones worked at C.E. Mineral in New Castle. He loved to help care for and raise his handicapped granddaughter. William also enjoyed betting on the horses.

He is survived by three daughters, Kathy Budzialek, of Bear, Sherry Casey and Shirley Sorensen, both of New Castle; three sons, William F. "Lump" Jones, Jr. and Clyde Jones, both of Bear and William F. Jones, Jr. of Elkton, Md.; a brother, David Jones, of Delaware City; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Services were held June 10 at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, Newark.

Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Elizabeth I. Shockley

Elizabeth I. Shockley, of Middletown, formerly of New Castle, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was 84.

Mrs. Shockley was a self-employed beautician, retiring after 42 years. She enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling. She was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Middletown.

She resided with and is survived by a daughter, Jennie Schreckengost (Robert); a sister, Jennie McDowell; three granddaughters, Elizabeth P. Vaccarini (Jamie), Dawn M. Gill (Curtis) and Patricia E. Irons; three great granddaughters, Ashley Gill, Devin Irons and Emily Vaccarini; and four great grandsons, Eric Gill, Brandon Irons, Robert Vaccarini and Andrew Vaccarini.

Services were held June 12 in the Gebhart Funeral Home, New Castle.

Interment was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn.

Marie “Stell” Perkins

Marie "Stell" Perkins died Friday, June 7, 2002 at the home of her daughter, Dolores, in Townsend. She was 90.

Mrs. Perkins, formerly of Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, owned and operated yard sales and flea markets. Marie's greatest joy was visiting with her family here and in New England.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John W. Perkins.

She is survived by five children, Leonard Cormier (Daisy), of Leipsic, Helen Thompson, of Hockessin, Bunny Lange (Bruce), of Graylyn Crest, Nathan Cormier (Linda), of Richardson Park, Dolores Worrall (Jim), of Townsend; her sisters and brother, Cecilia Smart, Toni DeLise and Percy Cote, all of Maine and Jeanette Brown, of Connecticut; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great grandchildren.

Services and interment were held June 11 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Bear.

Edward H. Riddle

Edward H. Riddle, of Pennsville, N.J., died Monday, May 27, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County. He was 67.

Born in Newark, N.J. to the late Edmund and Hazel Hughes Riddle, he was a former resident of Carneys Point, N.J. and lived in Pennsville for the past 21 years. Mr. Riddle was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Salem County Sportsmen's Club and enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and collecting antiques.

He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Taber; and children, Deborah Buyarski, of Carneys Point, N.J., Stephen Riddle, of Middletown, Sharon Storicks, of Newark, Denise L. Riddle, of Penns Grove, N.J. and Jeffrey W. Riddle, of Newark; a brother, Edmund Riddle, Jr., of Athens, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and a great grandchild.

He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Smith.

A memorial service was held May 31 at the Ashcraft Funeral Home, Penns Grove, N.J.

Marianne Shaughnessy

Marianne Shaughnessy, of Middletown, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 as a result of an auto accident in Wilmington. She was 24.

She was a lifelong resident of Collingdale, Pa. and moved to Middletown in 1996. She was a 1997 graduate of Middletown High School, a dedicated employee of Kids Cutz in Newark and loved children.

She is survived by her parents, Mary (Lanciano) and Edward Shaughnessy, of Middletown; siblings, Janel, Jennifer, Christina and Jackie Shaughnessy, all at home; her fiancé, Michael Vincent, of Newark; a grandmother, Olivia Lanciano, of Middletown; a Godchild, Tyler James Shaughnessy Evans; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held June 10 at St. Joseph's Church, Collingdale, Pa.

Dorothy M. Thornton

Dorothy M. Thornton, of New Castle, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Genesis Eldercare, Silver Lake Center in Dover. She was 77.

She was born in Kirkwood on Sept. 18, 1924 to the late Sam and Nora Reed.

Mrs. Thornton was preceded in death by her husband, James in March, 2000.

She is survived by a daughter, Marie C. Walker of Laurel; three sons, Charles D. Cobourn, of Boyds Corner, Leonard B. Cobourn, of Harrington and Kenneth J. Thornton, of Wilmington; two brothers, Delaware Reed and Robert Sult, both of Stanton; a sister, Sylvia Soper, of Wilmington; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

Services were held June 9 at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Burton C. Weber

Burton C. Weber, of Middletown, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at his home surrounded by family. He was 68.

Mr. Weber was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and he retired from the Air National Guard in 1993 as Master Sgt. after serving 38 years and 10 months.

After his military career, he worked at NAPA Auto Parts in Middletown part-time for the past eight years.

He was an active member of the Smyrna Church of Christ.

Mr. Weber is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joy; a son, Matt Weber (Sherri), of Middletown; three daughters, Terri Rhoads (Billy) and Lori Dougherty (Bill), both of Middletown, and Vickie Weber, of Smyrna; a stepson, Jim Warwick (Mary Lou), of Middletown; a stepdaughter, Jessica Bryant, of Middletown; two brothers, John Robert Weber and Calvin Weber, both of Townsend; a sister, Margarite Warren, of Seaford; seven grandchildren, Marissa, Nathan, Megan, Jacob, Brittney, Sandra and Caitlin; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held June 7 at the Smyrna Church of Christ, Smyrna.

Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
