DyAnn L. Miller
DyAnn lived life fully, hers was the "Carpe Diem" approach, because she seized every moment and every human interaction, bringing joy, smiles and hope to all. Indeed, DyAnn always smiled, she had a big, loud smile when you met her, with her knee socks pulled up high, or in her trademark sweat pants, but never, never in high heels.
DyAnn loved music that celebrated people and life, Bonnie Rait, John Rine, Jimmy Buffet and Eric Clapton. She'd sing their songs and dance to their music constantly, even in the middle of a meeting or hallway. She loved fondue, especially chocolate fondue, which she could make into a three-course meal. Professionally, DyAnn was the first full time counselor at St. Andrew's, and for 21 years she listened, encouraged, affirmed and hugged students. Teenagers knew DyAnn would listen to them, and help them find the healthy and safe course through life's challenges.
Generous, caring, yet filled with high expectations, DyAnn celebrated each student's unique gift. DyAnn also believed in community service. At St. Andrew's, she created a thriving community service program that today voluntarily involves almost the entire student body. She began reading, tutoring and mentoring programs with Silver Lake Elementary School; she herself was deeply involved with Tri-State Bird Rescue and especially with Camp New Hope; she initiated the St. Andrew's Blood Drive, and encouraged students to help in their own communities during vacations and after graduation.
DyAnn believed in service because she stood up for justice immediately, with DyAnn, there was no excuse for injustice, and she found ways at the dinner table or in her community to bring people to the cause of justice fully and immediately. Through her love of water and the beach in Lewes, she created "Camp Aunt DyAnn" a house filled with arts and crafts for children of all ages. "Let's do it!" she'd exclaim, tie-dying shirts, making candles, picnics, boat trips, or a swim. DyAnn loved to show little kids how she "trained" small fish to jump over little sticks she tossed in the water. Above all, DyAnn brought life to wherever she was.
She reminded us of the joy of living, dressed in her silly costumes, greeting us with her signature, "Hey, Bud!" She thrived within an eclectic group of friends, who all became friends together because of her. DyAnn was the gatherer, making everyone know they were a vital part of the circle. She will forever be celebrated at family gatherings, at the beach, in community service, and whenever people listen well to each other.
A celebration of DyAnn s life was held in the Chapel at St. Andrew s Episcopal School on May 7.
In lieu of flowers, DyAnn requested contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, #205, New Castle, DE 19720. Please earmark donations as restricted gifts specifically for cancer prevention.
