Betty D. Sullivan of Middletown died suddenly Thursday, November 22, 2001. She was 74.

She enjoyed taking short walks and spending time with her family.

She is survived by a niece and nephew, with whom she lived, Harry and Phyllis Missimer of Middletown; and several other nieces and nephews.

Services and burial were private.

Howard R. Young, Sr.

Howard R. Young, Sr. of Middletown died Thursday, November 22, 2001 at home. He was 59.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his brother, the Rev. Milton Young.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Maxine M. Young; three children, Jill J. Young of Largo, Md., Howard R. Young, Jr. of Middletown and Michael V. Young, Sr. of New Castle; a brother, Irving S. Young, Jr. (Constance) of Bear; two sisters, Henrietta Wilson (Donald) of Middletown and Mary Neuman of Newark; a sister-in-law, Barbara Young; a cousin, Lillian Young of Middletown; two grandchildren, Michael V. Young, Jr. and Adreahana Young; and a host of other family members and friends.

Services were held Nov. 28 in St. Paul UAME Church, Wilmington.

Interment will be Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Jeanette D. Young

Jeanette D. Young of Newark died Saturday, November 24, 2001 at Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was 74.

Mrs. Young was a member of the Living Stones Community Fellowship Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William T., in 1981.

She is survived by three sons, Richard T. of Wilmington, Robert L. of Middletown and David W. of Wilmington; three daughters, Phyllis L. Goldstein of Washington, D.C., Jo Anne M. Young of N.Y. and Loretta M. Young of Middletown; a brother, Richard Bromwell of Wilmington; five grandchildren; and a niece, Mildred Villermaux.

Services were held Nov. 28 in McCrery Memorial Chapel, Wilmington.

Entombment was in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Margaret L. David
Margaret L. David, of Bear, passed away surrounded by her children on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Christiana Hospital. She was 67.

Margaret was born in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late Robert and Minetta (Wigand) Brierley.

Margaret was a member of Red Lion Evangelical Free Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and enjoyed horseback riding, crafts, cooking and her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, W. Wallace David, who passed away in October of 1998. She was also predeceased by a sister, Minetta Lee Brierley and a brother, Paul Brierley.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy L. and her husband, Thomas L. Panchisin of Bear; her son, Thomas A. David and his wife, Deborah of Seaford; four brothers, Robert Brierley of Middletown, Jack Brierley of Kirkwood, William Brierley of Bear, and Donald Brierley of Rehoboth; three sisters, Alberta Timko of Newark, Melba Hill of Kimblesville, and Dorothy Wilson of Wilmington; and five grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua, Aaron, Jason and Justin. She was also predeceased by a sister, Minetta Lee Brierley and a brother, Paul Brierley.

A celebration of life was held Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22 at Red Lion Evangelical Free Church in Bear. Her funeral services were also Friday at the church. Interment was in St. Georges Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Margaret's memory made be made to Red Lion Evangelical Free Church.

Sally Pearl Ruffin
Sally Pearl Ruffin passed away November 18, 2002 in Smyrna. She was 46.

Daughter of the late Herbert and Ruby Ruffin, also survived by a devoted aunt, Luewill Hornbuckle, a host of cousins, including devoted cousins, Robert Taylor and his wife, Lilly, Gerald Hornbuckle and Veronica Hornbuckle, other family and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday at Congo Funeral Home. Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

William H. Hartnett IV
William H. Hartnett, IV, of New Castle, died suddenly on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 22.

Born in Wilmington on December 9, 1979, Mr. Hartnett was employed as a painter with Donato Painting in Wilmington. He enjoyed drawing and playing Dragon Ball Z.

He is survived by his parents, Patricia A. Stroud and Carl I. Massey, at home; three brothers, Daniel R. Hartnett and his wife, Paula, at home, John Stroud of New Castle and John C. Massey of New Castle; five sisters, Kathryn E. Hartnett, at home, Tanya L. Hartnett and her husband, Brian Caldwell, at home, Mary Stroud of New Castle, Christina Massey of New Castle and Diana M. Massey of New Castle; paternal grandmother, Ann Elston of Middletown; godson, Nathan Hartnett; seven aunts, nine uncles; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle. Interment followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

Theresa M. Kovac
Theresa M. Kovac, of New Castle, died on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was 79.

Born in Chester, Pa. on October 29, 1923, Mrs. Kovac was the daughter of the late Philemon and Frances (Schmidt) Murray.

She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and a former member of St. Peter's Parish. An accomplished homemaker and seamstress, Mrs. Kovac enjoyed many types of arts and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph C. Kovac in 1986.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Brown of Edgewater, Fla., Dee Ashley of Newark, Harriet Parnell of Waverly, Texas, Connie Collins of New Castle and Ken Kovac of Middletown; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle. Interment was private.

Helen Eckler Jarrett
Helen Eckler Jarrett, of the Middletown area, passed away on November 22, 2002. She was 65.

Helen was the daughter of the late Charlie and Martie Eckler.

In her youth, Helen worked as a lifeguard and while working at Silver Lake, saved a life. Helen was known to many people as "Mom." She was very loved, had a quick smile and lived a very full life with many adventures.

She was preceded in death by her son, William E. Bishop.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Cleon and Janet Eckler; three children, Sally Bishop Ellis and her husband, Brian Ellis, Joyce Bishop-Rogers, Romie Bishop and his wife, Shirley Bishop; and seven grandchildren, Martha Harris, Romie Worsley, Beverly Gatewood, Johnnie Lynn Coleman, Helen Shaw, Eddie Bishop and Jack Bishop. Helen was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren; other family members and many, many dear friends who she loved dearly -- too many to mention.

"We love you Mom and you will be missed very much."

The prayer services were held on Wednesday, November 27 at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment was in Townsend Cemetery.

Karen L. Gaines
Karen Lynn Gaines passed away on Nov. 19, 2005, at her home in Middletown.

Born Dec. 26, 1941, Karen Grandma, Mom Gaines slipped gracefully from our hands into the open arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A courageous fighter and tireless advocate for her children and grandbabies, her legacy lives on in the lives of all her surviving family members. While our hearts are breaking with her loss, our cup runneth over with joy as Heaven welcomes her. We love you, Mom and Grandma.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m., at Connection Community Church, West Green Street, Middletown.

Doris A. Jones
Doris A. Jones of Smyrna died Saturday, Nov. 19, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. She was 77.

She was born June 9, 1928, daughter of the late Harry T. and Virginia Ennis. She was employed as a nursing assistant at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna, for 22 years, retiring in the early 1990s. In addition, she had been employed for several years at Courtland Manor Nursing Home, Dover, and the former Kent Convalescent Center, Smyrna.

She was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Smyrna, and had taught Sunday school there for many years. She had also been a Sunday school teacher at St. Peter s Episcopal Church, Smyrna.

Mrs. Jones enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger W. Ennis, and a brother, Harry Buddy Ennis Jr. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, H. Ronnie Jones; a daughter and her husband, Lisa A. and John Embert of Smyrna; a granddaughter, Allison N. Embert of Smyrna; three brothers and their wives, Richard and Janna Ennis, Robert and Shirley Ennis and Bruce and Grace Ennis, all of Smyrna; two sisters, Jean Onofrey of Phila., Pa.; and Virginia Tootsie Morris and her husband Donald of Smyrna; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Nov. 23 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Merrill A. Brookens
Merrill A. Brookens of Newark died suddenly on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005. He was 44.

Mr. Brookens was born March 28, 1961, in Coatesville, Pa. From his youth, he was fascinated by cars and trucks and would go on to a career in automotive repair. Currently, he was employed as a diesel mechanic with Four State Truck Repair in New Castle. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Brookens greatly enjoyed camping at Lums Pond and cutting wood in his leisure time.

He was preceded in death by his father, David I. Brookens Sr. He is survived by his mother, Delsie E. Gooden Brookens of Newark; son, Branden Wayne Brookens, who is serving in the U.S. Air Force in Kuwait; daughter, Morghan Patricia Brookens, at home; brother, David I. Brookens Jr. of Chesapeake City, Md.; four sisters, the Rev. Elizabeth R. Brookens-Sturman of Brambleton, Va.; Judi L. McKelvey of Middletown; Joni L. Weglein of Canterbury, Conn.; and Patricia A. Wilson of Newark; maternal grandmother, Mary Gooden of Newark; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

Nona A. Wilson
Nona A. Wilson of Townsend passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at her home. She was 97.

Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker and loved to do embroidery. Earlier in her life, she had worked at Continental Fiber Co., formerly of Newark, and she also had managed her own dog grooming business. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Middletown and the M.O.T. Senior Center.

Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband James and two daughters, Mary E. Wilson and Agnes Biddle. She is survived by five children, James Wilson Jr. of Townsend, Walter S. Wilson and his wife Phyllis Ann of Smyrna, Nona Deputy and her husband Leroy of York, Pa., Rupert Wilson and his wife Linda of Smyrna, and Marie Lavender and her husband Sherman of Townsend, 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 25, at noon, at the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Forest Cemetery.

Mabel C. Othoson
Mabel C. Othoson of Winter Haven, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale. She was 85.

She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Wilmington, where she resided until 1979. She moved to Winter Haven one year ago from Port Saint Lucie, Fla., where she resided for 26 years. She was a retired bookkeeper. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Port Saint Lucie.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, H. Roger Othoson; stepdaughter, Carol Irene Strencejewski of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; daughter, Jacalyn Mabel Farnandez of Carlsbad, Calif.; son, Howard R. Bud Othoson of Winter Haven, Fla.; sister, Elsie C. Everett of Odessa; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Service was held Nov. 18 at the Johnson Funeral Home, Lake Wales, Fla. Interment was on Nov. 19 at White City Cemetery in Fort Pierce, Fla. Dr. Richard T. Diekmann officiated.

Lori V. Pharis
Lori V. Pharis of Bear passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005. She was 53.

Lori was born in Los Angeles, Calif. to Jesse Sloan Jackson and the late Daniel Casabian. Before her illness, she worked for the Bifferato, Bifferato, Gentilotti & Biden law firm. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Along with her mother, Jesse, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, John J. Pharis; two sons, John J. Pharis Jr. and his wife Karen, of Smyrna, and William D. Pharis of Bear; her daughter, Amanda L. Smallwood of Elkton, Md.; her brother, Daniel Casabian of Middletown; and three grandchildren, Kasey D. Smallwood, and Alexandra and Madison Pharis.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Lori's life was held Nov. 21 at Holy Family RC Church, Newark.

Josephine H. George
Josephine H. George of Middletown passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at home. She was 76.

Mrs. George was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was the daughter of the late John H. Whitlock and Hazel R. Sheats Whitlock. Her beloved husband, James L. George, passed away in December 2004.

Survivors include her children, Jeannette E. George of Bethany Beach, James L. George and his wife Tina C., of West Chester, Pa., and Janice H. Biddle of Middletown; siblings, John H. Whitlock, Reese Whitlock and Ellen Deputy; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral services were held Nov. 22 at the Gebhart Funeral Home, New Castle. Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.

Mary Ellen Oliphant
Mary Ellen Oliphant of Townsend passed away peacefully Nov. 17, 2005, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her loving family.

She enjoyed gardening and was a devoted Jehovah's Witness for many years.

Mrs. Oliphant was born in Dover to the late Chalmer and Elizabeth Steele. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George K. Oliphant; and two sisters, Lavoura Akin and Violet Lowman. She is survived by three sons, Kirk Oliphant and his wife Peggy, of Smyrna, and Andrew and Timothy Oliphant, both of Townsend; two daughters, Irene McDonald and her husband Dale, of Clayton, and Kandi Hunter and her husband Ray, of Port Deposit, Md.; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Chalmer Steele of Colorado, Carlton Steele of Pennsylvania and Hope Steele of California; and two sisters, Dorris Cruson of Smyrna and Margaret Golt of Dover.

Services were held Nov. 20 at the Faries Funeral Chapel, Smyrna. Burial was private.

Gabriel Markisohn
Gabriel Markisohn died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at his home in Middletown.

Gabe was born May 19, 1932, in Budapest, Hungary. A survivor of the Holocaust, Gabe immigrated to the United States in 1947 and lived with a foster family in St. Louis, Mo. A University City High School graduate, Gabe excelled at track and academics that led to a scholarship to attend Princeton University. A member of the graduating class of 1956, he obtained a degree in civil engineering, achieved several honors in track and served as track captain. Gabe pursued his career interests in St. Louis, Mo., Orlando, Fla., Washington, D.C., Ottawa, Canada, Wilmington and Indianapolis, Ind. The last 25 years of his career were spent as an innovator in the design, construction and management of senior living and nursing home facilities.

Gabe is survived by his wife, Teresa Terry Markisohn; his children, Jim, Brad and Kathy and their life partners, Nancy, Debbie and Diane; his five grandchildren, Jeremy, Nichole, Sara, Hannah and Jacob; and his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Elizabeth Markisohn, and their son, Brian, and his family.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in the University Chapel at Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.

Donald C. Springer
Donald C. Springer Don of Wilmington passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 72.

Donald was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Harry A. and Sadie Springer. He graduated from Brown Vocational School and served in the U.S. Army Airborne during the Korean War. For more than 30 years, he worked for the DuPont Company as an electrician and was a shop steward, retiring in 1985. He attended Old Swedes Church, was a member of the Price s Run Gang and enjoyed Hot Rods.

In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his brother, Harry A. Springer. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Jacqueline A. Barker Springer; his son, Kenneth C. Springer Sr. and his wife Lynda, of Wilmington; his daughters, Gail L. Wagner and her husband Thomas, of Middletown, and Rhoda J. Springer of Glen Mills, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Ernie Fuller of Wilmington; his niece, Barbara Tampanello; and his nephew, Ron Fuller.

Services were held Nov. 23 at Mealey Funeral Home. Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

David P. Heaney

David P. Heaney, a lifetime resident of Wilmington, died Sunday, November 11, 2001 after a long illness at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 84.

Mr. Heaney owned and operated the Brandywine Sheet Metal Shop.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; two daughters, Barbara Heiser of Middletown and Ann Galloway of Toughkenamon, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were private.

John Vincent Johnson

John Vincent Johnson of Newark died Sunday, November 11, 2001 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 80.

Mr. Johnson worked for the University of Delaware, New Castle County and the Federal Government. He also served in the Army during WWII. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid military historian.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Raab) Johnson; two children, Vince Johnson and Vicky Fike, both of Newark; two stepchildren, Sandra Harrel of Telford, Pa. and Cynthia Blum of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Nov. 14 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes, Newark.

Interment was in Delaware Veteran s Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Thomas Homer Lamb, Jr.

Thomas Homer Lamb, Jr. of Middletown and Smyrna, died Wednesday November 7, 2001 at home. He was 76.

Born and raised in Smyrna, Mr. Lamb attended Smyrna schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, stationed in Norwick, England. He returned to Smyrna in 1945 and continued his employment at Clarkie s Garage. In 1977, he assumed ownership of the business which he operated until his death. He was known to many in the area as "Mr. Clarkie."

Mr. Lamb was a lifelong member of St. Peters Church in Smyrna where he served many times as Vestryman, Chairman of the Cemetery committee, usher and Sunday school teacher. In recent years he was an active participant in the life of St. Anne s Church in Middletown. He was also a life member of the American Legion David C. Harrison Post #14 in Smyrna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas H. and Elizabeth Turner Lamb; and his first wife, Leola Davidson Lamb.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Denney Lamb; two brothers, James W. Lamb of Little Creek and Charles G. Lamb of Smyrna; two sisters, Margery E. Lamb of Smyrna and Rosemary L. Fox of Leipsic; five step-sons, MSgt, James W. Ryan, Jr. of Dalzell, S.C., Thomas P. Ryan of Smyrna, Robert D. Ryan of Wilmington, Donald L. Ryan of Kutztown, Pa. and Ronald D. Ryan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; six step grandchildren; a niece and nephews.

Services were held Nov. 10 in St. Peters Episcopal Church, Smyrna.

Interment was private.

Gertrude Bernice Neave of Earleville, Md. died Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at the Wilmington Hospital. She was 89.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Neave was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Neave, in 1968.

She is survived by a daughter, Martha N. Rushlow (Michael) of Wilmington; a son, James H. Neave of Rockledge, Fla.; a grandson, Adam J. Neave of Rockledge, Fla.; and a nephew, Thomas H. Hutt of Hockessin.

Services were held Nov. 12 at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Greenville.

Interment was private.

Theresa M. Phillips

Theresa M. Phillips of New Castle died Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 81.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in New Castle. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas D. Phillips, Sr. and their daughter, Lou Ann Phillips.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by two daughters, Terry M. Davis (Larry) of New Castle and Georgine M. Kruk (Joseph) of Wilmington; two sons, Thomas I. Phillips, Jr. (Susan) of Bear and John J. Phillips (Dawn) of Warwick, Md.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Rose M. Barbizzi of New Castle and Marion Sullivan of Wilmington.

Services were Nov. 12 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, New Castle.

Burial was in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.

Olen Sonny Reed

Olen Reed of Newark died of heart failure Thursday, November 8, 2001. He was 72.

Mr. Reed was born May 11, 1929 in Elkton, Md. and was a resident there most of his life. He retired from Motor Wheel in Newark in 1981 after 24 years of service. He enjoyed caring for his squirrels, country and western music and blue grass. Mr. Reed also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and telling them stories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Ethel Bradley Lee and a son, Ronald L. Reed.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Frances A. Reed; two sons, Robert Lee Reed (Marsha) and Roger L. Reed (Nina), all of Newark; a daughter, Darlene Ferrara (Anthony) of Middletown; two brothers, Rubin Reed of Red Lion and Francis Reed of Smyrna; a sister, Violet Reed of Wilmington; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Services were Nov. 12 at the Gee Funeral Home, Elkton, Md.

Memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice c/o Gee Funeral Home, 259 E. Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921.

Loraine B. Sapp

Loraine B. Sapp of Dover died Saturday, November 10, 2001 at Westminster Nursing Center, Dover. She was 83.

She was born Aug. 14, 1918 in Wilmington to Hugh and Ernestine Fuchsig Brainard.

She enjoyed a variety of activities over the years. They included camping, cruises and painting. Ms. Sapp was an avid collector of rocks that were incorporated with her love of gardening. She also enjoyed exercising and swimming at the Dover YMCA.

Ms. Sapp is survived by a son, Frank W. Boyce of Middletown; a daughter, Eleanor Engle of Lincoln; a brother, Jerome Brainard of Newark; loving companion of 18 years, John Mitchell of Dover; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 14 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover.

Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Compassionate Care Hospice or Kent General Home Health Care.
