Howard P. Ennis
Howard P. “Bud” Ennis of Bear passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 14, 2006. He was 60.

Bud was born in Wilmington to the late Howard H. and Helen F. Ennis. In 1939, Bud’s father started Ennis Electric, and Bud took over in the late 1980s. He was a dedicated husband and father.

Bud is survived by his wife of 14 years, Hazel A. Ennis; his son, Nathan Allen Ennis and his fiancée Erin E. Bader, of Bear; four sisters, Eleanor Allione and her husband Joseph, of Middletown, Helen Swartz and her husband Terry, of Glasgow, Alice Hoeflinger and her husband Herb, of Bear, and Patricia Ennis Porter and her husband Ron, of Bear; and one granddaughter, Cianna P. Mistecka.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Warren Pettie
Warren Pettie, born Jan. 12, 1930, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2006, after a long illness.

He led a colorful life as a decorated musician in the Navy and after retirement, as a drummer in bands throughout the country. Until recently, he played drums for the Dixie Ramblers and the Newark Community Band. Warren and his wife enjoyed extensive travel, motorcycling, sailboating, music and time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, June M. Pettie, of Middletown; brother, Frank Perry, of Hollywood, Calif.; daughter, Rosemary DeBurgo, of Kenosha Wis.; sons, Joseph, Frank and Anthony, all of California; stepdaughters, Ida Hill, of Jacksonville Fla., and Naomi Lancaster, of Middletown; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Warren enjoyed mutual devotion with his dogs, Max and Judy.

The funeral service was held March 19 at the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. A committal service was held March 20 at the chapel in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Francis G. Choma
Francis G. “Cookie” Choma of Newark passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, March 17, 2006, at Christiana Hospital. He was 63.

Fran was born in Wilmington to the late Joseph and Agnes Choma. He was a 1960 graduate of Salesianum High School, a veteran of the U.S. Navy; he worked for the Union Iron Workers Local No. 451 before retiring on Dec. 5, 2001. He was a member of Holy Family Church and the New Castle Moose Lodge. Fran enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, crabbing, softball, golf, reading and collecting baseball cards. He also was an expert boatsman who loved spending time with his family on the “Arthritic Barge.”

Fran is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia McCaffery Choma; two daughters, Aileen Huester and her husband Charles, of Middletown, and Kristine Dellinger and her husband William, of Georgetown; two sons, Michael G. Choma and his wife Jennifer, of Newark, and David L. Choma, of Newark; two sisters, Agnes Aub and Mary Champlin; two brothers, Joseph Choma and Walter Choma; and two granddaughters, Brianna and Annaleyse.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 22 at Holy Family RC Church, Newark. Interment was held in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Fran’s name to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, New Castle, DE 19720; or to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1601 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Robert J. DuHadaway
Robert James DuHadaway, founder of DuHadaway Tool and Die Shop of north Wilmington, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Masonic Home in Wilmington. He was 85.

Mr. DuHadaway served with the Third Fleet U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He was a member of Atonement United Methodist Church, Claymont. He held a membership with the Brandywine Masonic Lodge No. 33, where he served as past master. He was a charter member of Ruth Chapter OES. He was also a member of Nur Temple. Mr. DuHadaway continued his community involvement with the Delcastle School Board, where he served as president.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Delema Sturgis DuHadaway; four sons, Robert W. and his wife Cathy, of Holly Oak; David and his wife Sandy, of Bear; Kevin and his wife Christine, of Deerhurst; and James and his wife Bronwen, of Bellefonte; daughter, Priscilla Lynn Wickersham and her husband John, of LaCanada, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and a Masonic service were held March 22 at the Gebhart Funeral Home, Claymont. Burial was private.

Joseph P. Lagano Sr.
Joseph P. Lagano Sr. of Ocean View, formerly of Chesapeake City, Md., passed away after a long illness with cancer on Friday, March 16, 2007, at his home, with his family by his side. He was 69.

Mr. Lagano was born on Feb. 3, 1938, the son of the late Pasquale and Mary Lagano.

He was employed with Occidental Chemical in Delaware City for 30 years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and especially spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Lagano was dedicated to the Blessed Mother and to his Catholic faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Lagano.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara L. (Herring) Lagano; six children and their spouses, \Joseph and Deborah Lagano Jr., Michael Lagano and Tina Smith, Donna and Eric Miniuk, Frank and Bridget Lagano, Brenda and Joseph Curran and Theresa and Troy Crowson; three sisters, Carmella McGough, Catherine Blansfield and Marie Pettit; a brother, Pasquale Lagano Jr.; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law, Jacqueline and William Osowski; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial was offered on March 20 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.

Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.

Gordon W. Lamers
Gordon W. Lamers of Derby, Kan., formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, March 11, 2007.

Mr. Lamers was a graduate of St. Norbert College in West Des Peres, Wis., and Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

He bravely served his country in the Army Air Corps as a pilot in the European Theatre during World War II. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Derby and the Lions Club.

Mr. Lamers was an engineer for the Boeing Company for 40 years, from where he retired in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite; and six siblings.

He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Joseph and Michelle of Middletown, Michael, Phillip and Susan and Andrew and Heather; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Patricia and Kevin Kirkpatrick, Maureen Swope and Stan and Jennifer Pathak and Ravi; a sister, Irma Van Toll; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on March 21 at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, Pa.

Liam Thomas Bradley
Liam Thomas Bradley of Middletown died suddenly on Monday, March 12, 2007. He was 12.

He attended the John Charlton School in Dover.

He was the heart of his family. With his smile and twinkling blue eyes, he brought enormous joy. He loved the water, whether he was swimming or throwing sticks and stones. He loved his music, Disney movies, looking through family photo albums and reading his favorite books. He loved roller coasters and trips to the beach. He also enjoyed roller skating and horseback riding. He loved riding in his father’s car and taking long walks at Lum’s Pond State Park. He always had a big smile when jumping on the trampoline with his sister and the neighborhood kids. He loved cuddling with his mother and getting raspberries and piggyback rides from her.

Although he had autism and trouble speaking, he understood the world in a unique and accurate way. He taught those around him the greatest and most important lessons in their lives.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Thomas Bradley and William “Pop Pop” McGinnity.

He is survived by his parents, Peter and Denise Bradley of Middletown; a sister, Alana; a brother, Conor; his grandmothers, Peg “Mom Mom” McGinnity of Mays Landing, N.J., and Marie “Grandmom” Bradley of West Chester, Pa.; Uncle “Bull” and Aunt Josee McGinnity of Linwood, N.J., Uncle Tom and Aunt Helene Bradley of Drexel Hill, Pa., Aunt Caroline and Uncle Slade McLaughlin of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Uncle Jon Bradley of Brigantine, N.J., and Aunt Amy Hughes of Northfield, N.J.; and 13 cousins.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on March 16 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Middletown.

Burial was in Old Bohemia Cemetery in Warwick, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to support research into the link between thimersol in vaccines and autism at the Alan D. Clark, M.D., Memorial Research Fund, P.O. Box 585, Carthage, MO 64836.

Lillian M. (Robinson) Redman
Lillian M. (Robinson) Redman of Chesapeake City, Md., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Laurelwood Care Center in Elkton, Md. She was 83.

Mrs. Redman was born on Dec. 14, 1923, in Townsend, daughter of the late Hartford and Isabelle (Jones) Robinson.

She was a seamstress for more than 50 years and worked at General Clothing in Smyrna for 20 of those years.

Mrs. Redman enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening. Mrs. Redman loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lenore McVey; and a grandson, Robert Lewis Koeller.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harry E. Redman Jr.; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Linda and Harry Shifflett, Carolyn and Steve Tarkka and Patsy and Harry Dominick; two sons and two daughter-in-law, Harry E. III and Sarah Redman and John and Kathy Redman; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Services were held on March 9 at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, Middletown.

Burial was in Townsend Cemetery.

Nellie V. Thorp
Nellie V. Thorp of Christiana passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in her home. She was 92.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1914, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Elizabeth (Shaud) and James M. Shorts Sr.

Mrs. Thorp sold produce years ago at the market on King Street in Wilmington. In later years she sold produce from a roadside stand near her home on Old Baltimore Pike.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1969; a daughter, Nancy Hanna, in 1963; and a brother, Jim Shorts.

She is survived by a grandson and a granddaughter-in-law, Dave and Debbie Hanna of Smyrna; three great-grandsons, David, Daniel and Christopher; a brother, Tom Shorts of Newark; and a niece, Marcia Jenkins.

Services ere held on March 17 at the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Burial was in the adjoining memorial park.

George V. Schrader Jr.
George V. Schrader Jr. of Townsend passed away after a short illness on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 69.

Mr. Schrader was born Aug. 29, 1937, in Elkton, Md.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Schrader went into farming and later joined IBEW Local No. 126, Collegeville, Pa., from where he retired after 20 years of service. He then went back to his love of farming.

He loved to work the land and watch crops grow. He got his most enjoyment from working the fields, planting a large garden and giving the food to the people who needed it the most. He also enjoyed working on his farm equipment, reading farming newspapers and books, and listening to country music.

Mr. Schrader was a member of the Middletown Moose Lodge No. 1295 since 1970.

He was preceded in death by his father, George V. Schrader Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Anna (Abrams) Schrader; his mother, Mary E. Schrader of Newark; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenneth Schrader and his companion, Denise Speanburg, of Dover, George III and Diane Schrader of New Castle, Allen Schrader of Clayton and Harold and Carole Schrader of Clayton; a daughter and a son-in-law, Gail and Donald Swieder of Clayton; a brother and a sister-in-law, William and Janis Schrader of New London, Pa.; a sister, Betty of Newark; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a very special friend, whom he considered a son, Bruce Honaker of Smyrna.

Services were held on March 21 at the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Helen Margaret (Wisniewski) Sabbato
Helen Margaret (Wisniewski) Sabbato, a lifelong resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 16, 2007, at Broadmeadow Health Care in Middletown. She was 86.

Mrs. Sabbato was born on Sept. 13, 1920, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Antoni and Helena (Dombrowski) Wisniewski.

She graduated from St. Hedwig’s school in Wilmington.

Mrs. Sabbato worked for Hyman Reiver in retail sales for 25 years until 1982, and thought to retire early. With so much energy, she went back to work with Wilmington Dry Goods for another 10 years.

After retirement, she and her husband, Alex, spent much of their time at the Sellers Senior Center. Following Alex’s death, Helen carried on alone and was a vital part and active member of that community since 1980.

Mrs. Sabbato was a devoted member of St. Helena’s Church for 54 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alexander John Sabbato, in August 1994.

She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Ronald Phillip and Joan DeNight Sabbato of Middletown; two grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Phillip Christian and Tracey Storey of Chesapeake, Va., and Ronald Brett and Dawn Palmer Sabbato of Middletown; and two great-grandsons, Zachary Phillip Sabbato of Chesapeake and Brayden Alexander Sabbato of Middletown.

A Memorial Mass was offered on March 21 at St. Helena’s Roman Catholic Church, Wilmington.

Burial will be private at a later date.

George R. Barr, Jr.

George R. Barr, Jr. of Magnolia died Monday, March 11, 2002 near his home after a motor vehicle accident. He was 60.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1941 in Clearfield, Pa. to George and Hilda (Mann) Barr, Sr. Mr. Barr Worked for Playtex for more than 40 years and was a member of the Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department since 1970, serving as fire chief 1984 to 1986, and vice president in 1998. He received the Lifetime Membership award in 2000, had been fire policeman 55-33 since 1988 and fire company chief engineer. Mr. Barr was a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Marlyn Louise Barr; two daughters, Pamela C. Barr of Smyrna and Joanne Donovan (Terry) of Felton; two brothers, William Edward Barr of Indianapolis, Ind. And Jerry A. Barr of Dover; a sister, Bonnie Sue Nylander of Middletown; two grandchildren, Brittney and Lauren Donovan of Felton; a sister-in-law, Janet Durham and her family, James and Stella Bishop.

Services were held March 14 at Trader Funeral Home, Dover and March 15 at Faith Community Church, Camden.

Interment was in Barretts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

James Daniel “Danny” Romano

James Daniel Romano of Bear, formerly of New Castle and Hollow Terrace, died Sunday, March 10, 2002 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 83.

The son of the late Vincenzo “Jimmy” and Palmina Romano, Mr. Romano had been a mason contractor and was later employed by Clarence Burris and Sons, retiring in 1978 after 30 years.

Mr. Romano was actively involved in New Castle Moose Lodge #1578 for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the lodge in 1954 and served as the first governor from 1954 to 1956. He attained the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in 1967, the highest degree attainable in the order. For many years, he was the administrator and secretary of the lodge, retiring from full time service in 1992, but continuing in the administration of the lodge on a part time basis. Mr. Romano also assisted as membership director in founding lodges in Camden-Wyoming (#203) and Smyrna-Clayton (#2460).

He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Gottorf Romano; seven children, James E. Romano of Wilmington, Wayne A. Romano and L.G. “Pete” Romano, both of New Castle, D. Barry Romano of Newark, Chris D. Romano of Holt, MO, Sheila M. Barnette of New Castle and Mary E. Romano of Atlantic City, N.J.; two step-children, Patricia D. Sechrist of New Castle and Richard D. Hutchinson of Bear; two sisters, Iolene E. Brown of New Castle and Eva E. Thompson of Viola; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Billingsley, and a stepson, John A. Hutchinson, III.

Services were held March 14 at Holy Spirit R. C. Church, New Castle.

Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1578, 621 S. DuPont Pkwy., New Castle, DE 19720 (to be distributed to Moose Heart for Children and Moose Haven for the Elderly).

Margaret Marie Shetzler Winder

Margaret Marie Shetzler Winder of Middletown died Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at home with her husband at her side, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 76.

Mrs. Winder was born April 1, 1925 near Odessa, the daughter of the late John and Margaret Shetzler. She was a graduate of John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna and attended Delaware Hospital School of Nursing.

She was the Republican chairman of the 4th Election District of the 27th Representative District for 24 years and was Honorary Sergeant at Arms at the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, Fla. She served as chairman of the Delaware Bingo Control Commission under Governor Peterson. Mrs. Winder was a former treasurer of Middletown New Century Club and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was an Avon Honor Society Sales Representative. She was a notary public and certified travel agent. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Winder enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, coin collecting, genealogy, cooking and reading.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, J. Byrton D. Winder; a son, Thomas Winder of Middletown; a daughter, Nancy Cheney (Peter) of Bear; a sister, Carolyn C. Foraker of Port Penn; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Ann Marie Cheney of Bear.

Services were held March 10 at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Interment was in Old Drawyers Cemetery, north of Odessa.

Elizabeth E. Jamison

Elizabeth E. Jamison of Smyrna died Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove, Pa. She was 76.

She was born in Rockland, the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie Tims.

Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Jamison had been employed as an inspector for Doeskin Products, Rockland.

She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Talleyville Fire Company and had played clarinet with the Talleyville Fire Company Fife and Bugle Corps. Mrs. Jamison enjoyed gardening and flowers.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Don Jamison; a daughter, Sue Manwaring (Bill) of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, John W. Tims and Larry W. Tims, both of Wilmington; three sisters, Edith Maxwell of Rehoboth, Margaret Newcomb of Wilmington and Mary Lou Elkins of Greenville, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Sherri Manwaring of Nashville, Tenn. and Melissa Manwaring of Columbia, S.C.

Services were held March 15 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

Interment was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Newark.
