Pearl Ann Sarapulski of Middletown died Monday, November 5, 2001 at home. She was 56.
Mrs. Sarapulski was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Sarapulski, Sr., in Feb. of 2001.
She is survived by a daughter, Jodie Ann D Amico of Nottingham, Pa.; a stepson, John S. Sarapulski, Jr. of Hockessin; four stepdaughters, Joanne Price of New Castle, Theresa Magill of Wilmington, Marianne McAllees of Circleville, Ohio and Elizabeth Boleslawski of Bear; a brother, Robert Holding of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Lillian Rountree (Wilson) of Hertford, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 9 at St. Hedwig Church.
Burial was in Cathedral Cemetery.

Paul H. Sherman
Paul H. Sherman of Middletown died Friday, November 9, 2001 at his home after a long illness. He was 47.
Born in Wilmington on Nov. 30, 1953, he was raised in Wilmington Manor, New Castle and attended schools in the Colonial School District.
Mr. Sherman was a self-employed entrepreneur most of his life; his last business being Paul H. Sherman, Auto Broker in New Castle. He previously owned Tri-State Cable, Time Out Liquors and the Smoke Shop. He was a member of the American Legion Stahl Post #30 and St. Anthony s Club. He enjoyed movies, boating, the beach and picnics with family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters, Serena S. Sherman of San Francisco, Calif. and Allison Jayne Sherman of New Castle; his parents, James H. and Claire Drendall Sherman of New Castle; a brother, James H. Sherman of New Castle; four sisters, Margaret Kay Schorah and Leslie Drendall Williams, both of New Castle, Claire Ann Wilson of Glenmoore, Pa. and Kimberly Marie Boone of Stanton; and his longtime companion, Michele Justis and her children, Dan and Alexis Justis, all of Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Paul Henry and Margaret (Richardson) Sherman; and maternal grandparents, Frederick and Jane (Maslin) Drendall.
Services were held Nov. 12 at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, Minquadale, New Castle.
Interment followed in the adjoining park.

Kathryn Shug L. Wolinski
Kathryn L. Wolinski of Middletown died suddenly Thursday, November 8, 2001 at home. She was 67.
Mrs. Wolinski retired from the Town of Middletown in 1997, where she worked in the town office for 27 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Wolinski, in 1991.
She is survived by a son, Michael L. Wolinski of Middletown; two daughters, Virginia and Cathy; grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Elizabeth and Alec; three brothers, Guy C. Lockerman, Jr. of Townsend and Willard and Paul Lockerman, both of Middletown; and a sister, Ellen Sahad of Toledo, Ohio.
Services were held Nov. 13 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.
Burial was in the Old St. Anne s Cemetery, Middletown.
James C. Knotts, Sr.
Mr. Knotts was born April 6, 1925 on the Levels near Middletown, and he was the son of the late Walter B. and Clara Roy Knotts.
Mr. Knotts farmed in the Smyrna area most of his life and was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Middletown and the American Legion David C.Harrison Post #14 in Smyrna. He enjoyed card games, visiting friends and reminiscing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George W. Knotts; a sister, Mildred Brittingham; and a grandson, James Cody Knotts.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adeline Bigelow Knotts; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Crawford Knotts Jr. and Cheryl A. Knotts of Smyrna; four brothers, William R. Knotts of Dover, Ernest A. Knotts and Ralph V. Knotts, both of Magnolia and Frank T. Knotts of Smyrna; a sister, Anna Strimel of Dover; 3 grandchildren, Jodie C. Knotts, John C. Knotts and Jace C. Knotts all of Smyrna.
Services were held Nov. 12 in the Smyrna Wesleyan Church, Smyrna. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna.

Joseph Wesley Rhoades, Jr.
Beloved father of Florestine A. Anderson of Middletown, Mary Banks of Buffalo, N.Y., Mary Charlotte Muhammad, Karen Stokes, Ophelia Evans, Josephine Rhoades, Joseph W. Rhoades, III all of Middletown, and Anthony (Tony) Rhoades of Montpelier, Va.; he raised his two grandchildren, Virgil Rhoades and Theodore Anderson; also survived by 22 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a devoted grandson, Hollis Russell, Jr.; one sister, Avis Carter of Delaware City; and a host of other family and friends.
Services were held Thursday, Nov. 14, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Middletown. Interment was in Dale Cemetery.

Clara Mae Todd Watson
She was the wife of the late Abram W. Watson, Sr.
She was a member of Dale United Methodist Church in Middletown. She was a longtime member, for more than 60 years at Bethel AME Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Thelma A. Queen and husband, Renzie Queen, Sr. of Middletown, and Equilla W. Boyce of Westtown, Pa.; two sons, Reginald V. Watson and wife Charla of Kennett Square, Pa. and Abram W. Watson, Jr. and wife Paula of Newark; one daughter-in-law, Marie W. Watson of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Cassie T. Smallwood and Mary T. Grinnage, both of Middletown; one brother, Norman H. Todd, Sr. and wife Betty Todd of Middletown; one aunt, Anna E. Coleman of Pocopson Twp., Pa; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Norris N. Watson.
Services were held at the Bethel AME Church, Kennett Square, Pa. Interment was in Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester.

George Regis Toomey
Mr. Toomey retired from the Ford Motor Company and then he was a school bus driver for the Christina School District for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a jet mechanic for the F4 Phantom Jet and served in the flight line for the Thunderbirds at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nev. He was an avid photographer.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel I. Toomey; a son, Curtis A. Toomey of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Cindy Foster of Las Vegas, NV; stepsons, Joseph Zmierski of Wilmington, Steven Zmierski of Middletown and Bradford Zmierski of Hartford, Conn.; brothers, Wayne Toomey of Ocean View, and Edward Toomey of Wilmington; sisters, Barbara D'Onofrio of Fenwick Island, Sandra Toomey of Wilmington and Marlene A. Horisk of Odessa; 3 grandchildren, Ashleigh C. Toomey, Eric Foster and Kristie Foster ; and his 3 step grandchildren, Sara Zmierski, Daniel Zmierski and Hannah Dolor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert G. Toomey.
Services were held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington on Wednesday evening, November 20, 2002 at 8 p.m.

Helen S. Engle
Formerly of Smyrna, Mrs. Engle had resided in Tampa with her niece. She retired after 30 years as a teacher and had taught for many years at the Dover Air Force Base.
She is survived by loving family in Florida and Delaware and was predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Engle.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park. Burial was in the adjoining park.

Bertha S. Hunt
Mrs. Hunt had been employed by the Department of Agriculture until her married in 1941 to Donley F. Hunt. Thereafter, she was a full-time homemaker.
Bertha was active in St. Mary s Catholic Church, Alexandria. She was a talented seamstress and an avid golfer. She was a member of the Villamay Women s Club and of the Inner Wheel of the Alexandria Rotary Club. In addition, she participated in the Meals on Wheels program.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Donley F. Hunt, in 2000.
Mrs. Hunt is survived by two daughters, Diane Stalder, of Silver Spring, Md. and Susan Morris, of Hartly; and a sister, Josephine Ralbovsky, of Johnstown, N.Y.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 a.m. Friday Nov. 22, at St. Mary s Catholic Church, 310 S. Royal St., Alexandria, Va. Interment will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Alexandria, Va.
Edward F. Bonk Sr.
Mr. Bonk was born Oct. 12, 1917, to Vincent Bonk Sr. and Feliksa Trenkowska Bonk. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom Junior College. He served in the U.S. Navy (two hitches) as a chief petty officer from 1941 to 1946. In 1963, Mr. Bonk retired after 20 years of service as a lieutenant in the Wilmington Police. He also was a retired New Castle County chief deputy sheriff and was a partner for more than 20 years in the Brandywine Racetrack.
Mr. Bonk also worked for CCC Camp. He was the president of both the Wilmington Police Federal Credit Union and the Wilmington Police and Fire Holy Name Society, president of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, usher at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the DAP.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Vincent Bonk Jr. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ann Drozdowski Bonk; and children, Kathaleen Pukas and her husband Ted, of S.D., Susan M. Clendaniel and her husband Jack, of Wilmington, Edward F. Jr. of Newark, Marie F. Bonk of Newark, Veronica Bonk of Wilmington, Lisa M. Schorah of Wilmington, Rosalie J. "Cookie" Bonk of Middletown and Jacqueline Lord of Wilmington. Other survivors include 15 grandchildren, Teddy, Kate, Matt, Julie, Megan, Tim, Melanie, Kasey, Michael E., David, Angela, Tommy, Adrianna, Steven, and Thomas; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jesse, Joseph, John and Frank; two sisters, Helen Stetina and Tessie Grodzicki; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass was offered Nov. 11 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Hockessin. Interment will be held privately.

Sylvia A. Garnett-Brown
She received her education in the public schools of New Castle and graduated from De la Warr High School in 1974. She continued her education at Delaware Technical and Community College. She joined the Community Presbyterian Church at an early age under the ministry of the Rev. Maurice J. Moyer. On Sept. 5, 1981, she was united in holy matrimony to Jerome A. Brown Sr. in New Castle at Community Presbyterian Church, and from this union was born Jerome A. Brown Jr. in 1982. Sylvia was a devoted and loyal employee of Marshall's department store for 23 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, collecting elephants and family pictures. Sylvia was an avid reader of books and was given the name "Queen of Coupons." She also enjoyed being a member of the "Bingo Mafia." She was strong willed and a mother to many.
She was predeceased by a brother, John. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Jerome A. Brown Sr.; son, Jerome Jr. "PeeWee" and "JB"; grandson, Milan Isiaih Brown; five brothers, Phillip "Ty", Roland and his wife Lillian of Camden, Pastor Wesley and his wife Michele of Middletown and Frederick and his wife Amentrice of Newark; three sisters, Evangelist Erma of New Castle, Macretia "Mae" of Wilmington and Shelia of Wilmington; one uncle, Lou of N.J.; two devoted goddaughters and nieces, Pamela and Janet; one devoted nephew, Mike G.; and what she called her :guardian angel", ArJana'e; three devoted mother figures, Clousie Peters, Mamie Wilkens and Lillian Watson; 10 sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and a host of other nieces, and nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service was held Nov. 10 at Community Presbyterian Church, New Castle. Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
Mark A. Ewing
Mr. Ewing was born Jan. 10, 1957, in Wilmington; Mr. Ewing was a 1975 graduate of McKean High School. Following graduation, he was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in N.C. After his military service, Mr. Ewing accepted a position in security at the University of Delaware and later graduated from the Delaware State Police Academy. For the past 15 years, he had been employed as the parts manager for Western Auto in Glasgow.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda S. Thinnes Ewing; father, John A. Ewing of Townsend; two stepdaughters, Anna Brown and Heather Brown, both at home; sister, Carol Ann Fretz of Newark; two brothers, J. Douglas Ewing of Newark and James A. Ewing of Middletown; father and mother-in-law, Hoyt N. and Sandra Thinnes of Newark; four nephews, William D. Ewing, Derek M. Ewing, Kyle L. Ewing and Tyler R. Bushkirk; and a niece, Crystal L. Lenk. His mother, Lorene Thornton Ewing, preceded him in death in 2004.
A funeral service was held Nov. 12 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Newark. Interment followed in White Clay Creek Cemetery, Newark.

Jeanette Martin
Jeanette was born in Wilmington July 7, 1945, eldest child of Edith B. Martin and the late Willie F. Martin. She was a graduate of Howard High School and earned an associate's degree from Delaware Technical and Community College. Jeanette worked in banking for many years. Jeanette was a loving mother, daughter, sister and friend.
She is survived by her mother, Edith B. Martin; daughters, Britannia Bishop and her husband Johnny, Danielle Moffett and her husband Frank Jr. and Nicole Martin; son, Keith L. Martin; grandchildren, Taylor, Jade, Jordan, Elijah, Frank III and Daniel; devoted companion, Stanley Mathis; lifelong friend, Claudia Dorman; brothers, Ben F. Martin Sr. and his wife Charlene, and Timothy Martin; sisters, Margate Finney and her husband Andrew, Carolyn Williams and her husband Wendell, and Wauneta Sesames.
Services were held Nov. 12 at St. Paul UAME Church, Wilmington. Entombment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
Phyllis L. Heverin
Phyllis had worked as a telephone operator in Middletown and had also worked in several restaurants including Kirby & Holloway Family Restaurant in Dover. She was a member Trinity Wesleyan Church in Dover.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charles E. "Ed" Heverin; one son, E.A. Heverin and his wife Beverly, of Middletown; three grandchildren, Wendy Coryell, Samuel Heverin and Gwendolyn Thomas; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, the Rev. Reeves Locke of Tennessee.
A funeral service was held Nov. 14 at the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral, Middletown. Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
Barbara A. Howard
Her parents, James and Marie Ellis Lynch, predeceased her. She is survived by her devoted husband, Willard "Bill" Howard; brothers, James Lynch of New Castle, Donald Lynch of Pike Creek and Michael Lynch of Middletown; and a sister, Joan Taft of Ocean View.
A funeral service was held at the Corleto Latina Funeral Home on Nov. 14. Interment followed the service in the Lombardy Cemetery.

Benjamin J. Solomon
Benjamin was born Feb. 11, 1975, in Hampton, Va., and attended Fairborn High School in Ohio. He enjoyed Gameboy, Nintendo, and PlayStation, watching movies, doing crossword puzzles, playing with miniature cars and trucks, and camping out in his family's RV.
He is survived by his parents, Linda and John Solomon of Ladson, S.C.; brother, Gordon G. Solomon of N.C.; aunts, Lorraine Steele and Alice Megonigal, both of Middletown; uncle, Eugene Solomon of Townsend; and pet dog, Niki.

Katherine H. Matarese
Katherine was born in Wilmington; Mrs. Matarese was the daughter of the late Michael and Helena Ciminello. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert A. Matarese, in 1979; and by her daughter, Linda Ann Matarese, in 2004. She is survived by her sons, Paul M. Matarese and his wife Janice, of Middletown and David F. Matarese of Elsmere. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lisa Braun and husband Eric, Michelle Hall and husband Larry, Deborah Matarese and John Mikus; a great-granddaughter, Hailey Hall; a sister, Carmela Fahey; and a brother, Michael Ciminello, both of Wilmington.
Services were held Nov. 15 at Mealey Funeral Home, Wilmington. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Marion J. Barnes
Mrs. Barnes was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and had retired from the State of New York, where she had worked as an O.T. at the Rockland State Hospital. Marion was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8734 in Little Valley, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Barnes, in 2003; two grandchildren, Corey and Jenifer Schmidt; and one sister, Joan Victoria. Marion is survived by two daughters, Marion Hughes and her husband John, of Middletown, with whom she lived, and Maureen Schmidt of Wisconsin, one son, Michael Casey of Arkansas; five grandchildren, Brandon, Erin, Cassie, Christopher and Casey; two great-grandsons, Eden and Quintin; two sisters, Kay Devlin and Eileen Hutchinson; and one brother, Thomas Whelan, all of N.Y.
Services will be held in Little Valley, N.Y., on Friday, Nov. 18.

Janet E. Henson
She was born in Wilmington to Walton and Isabelle MacKenzie Ashley. Mrs. Henson was an administrative secretary for the State of Delaware Department of Probation and Parole in Wilmington before retiring in 1991. She was a member of Aldersgate Wesleyan Church in Milford and enjoyed crocheting and crafts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Walt Ashley. Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Jesse Paul Henson; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Lisa Henson of Townsend; two grandchildren, Jereme and Tyler Henson; brother, M. Reed Ashley Sr. and his wife Dolores, of Newark; niece, Robin Foster and her husband Chuck, of Hockessin; nephew, M. Reed Ashley Jr. and his wife Priscilla; and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Martha M. Maichle
She was born in West Chester, Pa., and grew up in Hacks Point, Earleville, Md., where she resided with John, her husband of 44 years. She was a 1958 graduate of Bohemia Manor High School. Mrs. Maichle was known for her laughter and kindness, and enjoyed bingo, bowling and playing card games with her family and friends. She worked as a nursing assistant at Laurelwood Nursing Home before being injured on the job. She also worked for many years at the Earleville Market. She then stayed home to care for her son and four stepchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Jewel Hanifee; and her parents, Aubry and Evelyn Mae Hickey Vincent; along with her grandmother, Martha May Sackers. In addition to her husband John, she is survived by a son, Roger R. Maichle of Chrystal Beach and his wife Margaret; stepchildren, John J. Maichle Jr. of Bear, Stephen J. Maichle of New Castle, Larry J. Maichle of Middletown and Margaret Aiello of Elkton, Md.; a brother, Thomas Vincent of Florida; a sister, Evelyn Cheryl Hanifee of Earleville; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 16 at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton. Interment was at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Kenneth C. Marshall
Mr. Marshall was a computer technician at Controll Data in the Wilmington division for more than 10 years, retiring in 1969. He was an Air Force veteran, a member of the Knights of Columbus, enjoyed the beach and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Snyder Marshall; his daughter, Monica Marin of Powhatan, Va.; his son, K.C. Marshall and his wife Gerri, of Middletown; his sister, Betty Janosko; and his grandchildren, Tony, Michael and Courtney Marin and Danielle and Sean Marshall.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Avenue and Union Street, Wilmington, on Friday, Nov. 18, at 12:30 p.m. Friends may call at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington, on Thursday evening, Nov. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.

Ray C. Schaeffer
Ray was born in Elberta, Mich., on Dec. 2, 1918; Mr. Schaeffer was the son of the late Ray Schaeffer and Julia Fall Schaeffer. He attended the University of Michigan, starring on both the track and wrestling squads, and later served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the New Castle County Airbase.
Mr. Schaeffer completed his degree in business administration at the University of Delaware, where he was again a standout track and wrestling athlete. He made his career with the DuPont Company, retiring from computer operations in 1980 after 32 years of service. Active in the IOOF (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) for more than 50 years, Mr. Schaeffer was a member of Eden Lodge 34. He was a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Delaware; a member of Christine Encampment 12; a Past Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Delaware; a member of Delaware Canton 1 and Naomi Rebekah Lodge 3; and a Past Grand Representative to the Sovereign Grand Lodge for 14 years. An avid traveler, Mr. Schaeffer had visited all 50 states with his wife. He especially enjoyed hunting trips at his vacation cabin in Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Anderson, and stepdaughter, Joni Davis. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jane Montgomery Schaeffer; five stepdaughters, Deborah Farnan and husband Joseph, of Wilmington, Karen Branda and husband Rick, of Fremont, Ohio, Lynn Stiteler and husband Daniel, of Claymont, Robin Smith and husband Emory, of Middletown, and Allison Asay of Claymont; son-in-law, Dwight Davis of Hudson, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the United Nations Educational Pilgrimage for Youth, Inc., 422 N. Trade St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Lisena P. Dischler
Mrs. Dischler was born in Jersey City, N.J., on March 25, 1944, daughter of the late Paul and Josephine Ruggiero. A talented homemaker, she greatly enjoyed flower gardening and trips to the beach. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who devoted her life to caring for her beloved family.
She is survived by her husband of more than 37 years, Dennis D. Dischler Sr.; three children, Dennis D. Dischler Jr. of Delaware City, JoAnn Toole and husband Robert, of Delaware City, and Steven A. Dischler and wife Heather, of Bear; and two granddaughters, Kayla Toole and Chelsey Dischler.
A memorial service was held Nov. 15 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Delaware City.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1501 Casho Mill Road, Suite 1, Newark, DE 19711.
John T. Mauser, Jr.
John was born April 7, 1947, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was the son of the late John T. Sr. and Eunice Mauser of Penns Grove, N.J. He graduated from Penns Grove High in 1967. In 1973, he enrolled in Salem Community College. During his life, John felt a spiritual desire to offer his time to ministries, where he could help people in need. He worked at Teen Challenge in Virginia and Buffalo, N.Y. Whenever time permitted, John would volunteer his craft to Habitat for Humanity in Kentucky and New Jersey.
John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Sharon Mauser, one sister, Anne Merriman, one nephew, five nieces, and 10 great nieces and nephews. John was a "down-to-earth" kind of person who loved the simple things in life. We will all remember him because of "who he was" and the special interest he took in others
A funeral service will be held Nov 18 at 1 p.m. in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral Home on Friday. Interment will be held privately in Buffalo, N.Y.
