The Rev. Russell H. Perkins, a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington since 1958, died Saturday, March 2, 2002 in Manteo, N. C. He was 75.
Born in Rome, N.Y. on May 15, 1926, Father Perkins received his early education at Public School No. 18 and East Side High School in Paterson, N.J. and Ramsey High School in Ramsey, N.J. He graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. in 1953 with a degree in chemistry. His calling to the priesthood led him to theological studies St. Mary s Seminary in Baltimore, Md.
Bishop Edward J. Schlotterback, OSFS, ordained Fr. Perkins a priest in the Roman Catholic Church on May 31, 1958 at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Wilmington.
During his early years of service to the Diocese of Wilmington, Fr. Perkins held associate pastor posts at St. Edmond s Church in Rehoboth Beach, St. John s Church in Newark and St. Paul s Church in Wilmington, where he began the ministry to the Hispanic community.
Father Perkins was appointed to his first pastorate at St. Joseph s Church in Middletown in Sept. 1968. He went on to serve as pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Chestertown, Md., St. Dennis Church in Galena, Md. and St. Ann s Church in Wilmington. In 1987 he was appointed pastor of St. Polycarp in Smyrna, where he served until his retirement to Manteo, N.C. in July 1995.
Throughout his career of ministry, Fr. Perkins also served as Administrator of St. Mary of the Assumption in Hockessin and St. Mary s Star of the Sea in Ocean City, Md. He was Rural Life Director for the Diocese of Wilmington and a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Commission.
Father is survived by his brothers, Theodore of New Bern, N.C. and Robert of Ft. Collins, Colo.; sisters, Dianne Barber, Blooming Grove, N.Y., Carolyn Mankovich and Janice Eberhardt, both of Manteo.
Services were held March 8 at St. Polycarp Church, Smyrna.
Interment was in Mary Rest Cemetery, Mabwah, N.J.

Kathleen W. McQuale
Kathleen W. McQuale of Wilmington, formerly of Lewes, died Sunday, March 10, 2002. She was 83.
Mrs. McQuale was manager of Manor Park Apartments, retiring in 1981, prior to that she worked for the Division of Motor Vehicles. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was the organist for the Townsend United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Robert H. McQuale (Janet); a daughter, Lynn M. Sadlowski (Michael); seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. McQuale, in 1983; and a brother, Arthur Walls.
Services will be held Thursday, March 14 at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville at 1 p.m., where friends may call after noon.
Internment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1021 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806.
Lillard E. Brown
Born in Marion, Va., on July 5, 1920, Mr. Brown was the son of the late Ardie and Martha (Barker) Brown.
He served his country during World War II in the European Theatre as a member of the US Army Air Corps in the 315th Troop Carrier Group.
In 1980, he retired from the Maintenance Department of New Castle County Parks and Recreation after 14 years of service.
Mr. Brown was active in his community and in civic groups.
He was a former commissioner and past president of the Delaware City Parks Commission, a past president of the Delaware City Recreation Club, the founder of the first Little League baseball team in Delaware City, and a member of the St. Georges Grange.
A proud veteran, he was the commander of Robert L. Taylor Post #13, American Legion, Delaware City, a member of the 40 et 8 Society, and a member of J. Allison O'Daniel Post #475, VFW, Newark.
His memberships in fraternal organizations included New Castle Moose Lodge #1578 and Jackson Lodge #19, AF & AM, Delaware City. An avid sportsman, Mr. Brown was a member of the Pigeon Club of Wilmington and was a past president of the Shure Shot Gun Club in Potter Co., PA.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Georgia Harriet (Mitchell) Brown; daughter, Linda Denise Haynes and her husband, Rick, of Middletown; sister, Leola Davis of Middletown; brother-in-law, Charles Hall and his wife, Debbie, of Bear; and two grandchildren, Rebecca Haynes and Connor Haynes.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 13, at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 309 Clinton Street, Delaware City, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Delaware City Cemetery.

Theodore Streaker Jr.
Ben was born in Claymont, to the late Theodore Benjamin and Sallie E. (Heckler) Streaker Sr.
He was raised on a farm in Lisbon, Md. before moving back to Delaware in the early 1950s.
He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, and was a supervisor for Delmarva Power and Light for 30 years before retiring in 1982.
He was an avid Nascar fan and enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren.
Along with his parents, two sisters and a brother, S. Marie Hulver, Helen I. Streaker and Henry E. Streaker, predeceased him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marie (Thompson) Streaker; a son, Richard B. Streaker, Sr. of Middletown, a daughter, Robin L. Streaker of Smyrna; three sisters, Anna R. Hartman of Wilmington, Alice M. Barth of Sykesville, Md. and Dorothy E. Prasek of Debary, Fla.; three grandchildren, Richard B. Jr., Katie E., and Stephen A., all of Middletown.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ben's Life Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 13, followed by his funeral service at noon at Beeson Memorial Services of Newark, 2053 Pulaski Hyw., U.S. 40, Fox Run, 302-453-1900.
Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Lois Davis
A funeral service was held Tuesday March 11, 2003 at in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road Bear.

William A. Cross
Mr. Cross farmed all his life. His family farmed in Holmdel, N.J. and operated Cross Brothers Farms, which spanned three generations. He moved to Delaware, where he and his father continued farming near Middletown. He was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the American Cancer Society. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marcia Gant Cross; five children, Leanne Phillips and her husband, Jeff of Middletown, Laura Cross of Middletown, William J. "Jack" Cross and his wife, Danielle of Newark; Sue Brancaccio of Middletown, Jennifer O'Keefe and her husband, Sean of Allentown, N.J.; two sisters, Helen Theurkauf of Glastonbury, Conn. and Maud Kircher of Oceanport, N.J.; a brother, David Cross of Mexico; nine grandchildren, Meghan, Ty and Ian Phillips, John Williams, Jamie and Joey Brancaccio, Gabrielle and Sophia Cross and Liam O'Keefe; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, West Cochran Street in Middletown. Interment will be in Old Bohemia Cemetery, Warwick, Md.
The family suggests contributions to St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 196, Middletown, DE 19709; or to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
Katherine Denise LaVere
Katherine Denise LaVere, of Middletown, formerly of Smyrna, was taken from her family to be with God on Sunday, February 27, 2005. She was 30.
Kathy was born on June 11, 1974 in Fountain Valley, Calif., to Theresa Rash and Keith D. LaVere. Kathy had attended Smyrna High School and graduated from Delaware Technical School. She was employed as a computer operator with Scientific Games, Inc. of Dover.
Kathy was a model daughter, a loyal friend, and a beautiful person. She was happy, funny, kind, and strong. She loved animals, especially horses, was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and had won many prizes with her two horses, Lucy and Lexi.
Kathy lived life to the fullest and touched everyone around her, especially her niece Hannah, whom Kathy treated as her daughter. By being together they brought great joy to each other. Her family will miss her greatly and their lives will never be the same.
Kathy was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Joseph M. Picard, Brack Cecil Rash and Harold LaVere, and also her Uncle Mark Picard. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Theresa and Raymond Rash of Smyrna; her father, Keith LaVere of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers; Jeremy Rash and his wife Ruth of Bear; and Josh Rash of Smyrna; her maternal grandmother, Marlen Picard of Middletown; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 4, at 10 a.m. in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, where friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
Interment will be in the Forest Cemetery in Middletown.
Dean R. Schafer
Dean R. Schafer left this world behind on Monday, February 28, 2005, and proceeded on to the next step of his journey into the kingdom of God.
Dean was a wonderful husband, an extremely loving father and a dear friend to many. He was an avid video player. He was also a "motorhead" from the beginning, from his hotrod Camaro as a teenager to his Buick Grand National, to the Vette he never managed to attain.
"We're certain he's racing around heaven in a shiny new C-6 as we grieve," his family said.
He graduated from William Penn High School. Dean was a man of great dedication, having worked for the New Castle County as a licensed wastewater treatment plant operator for 34 years. He was an accomplished musician, having played in the bands "Outlet" and "Castle" in the 70s and 80s. He liked visiting the Poconos where he grew up, and loved spending time at his beach house.
Dean will be greatly missed by all who knew him, from his co-workers at the county, to his friends and his Playstation partners, Johnny Calvetti and Chris Leary. Dean was always helping and thinking of others. Being an organ donor, he is still helping others from heaven.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Nellie Schafer. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Karen (Kamalski) Schafer; and his "Little Mouse of the House", daughter, Lauryn, the apple of his eye. Dean is also survived by his brother, Warren Schafer of Whitehaven, Pa.; brother-in-law, Mark Kamalski and his wife, Janice; niece, Kelly Kamalski; and nephew, Luke Kamalski, all of Middletown.
The Schafer and Kamalski families would like to especially thank the Leary family for their support and comfort.
A funeral service was held on Monday, March 7, at the Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church, 2880 Summit Bridge Rd., Bear, DE 19701.
Burial was held privately.
William D. Garrett
William D. Denny Garrett, of Wilmington, passed away on March 2, 2005 at home. He was 60.
Born in Chester, Pa. to the late William and Edna May Garrett, Mr. Garrett resided in Wilmington for more than 40 years. He previously resided in Green Ridge, Aston, Pa. He was an inspector for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1994.
His memberships included the Drum & Bugle Corps, Ridley Rangers, the Archer Epler Musketeers in Upper Darby and Yankee Rebels out of Baltimore, Md. He was the owner of a racecar -- G&S Racing -- and his car was raced in Jennerstown Speedway and Motor Drone in western Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed building cars and traveling with Drum Corps. He was a 1963 graduate of Sun Valley High School in Aston, Pa.
Mr. Garrett was predeceased by a son, Steve M. Garrett, who died in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Anne Freyhof Garrett; a daughter, Denise and her husband, Jim Schmucker, of Aston, Pa.; and a daughter-in-law, Sandra and her husband, Dennis Lang, of Townsend. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Amanda and Cortney Lang, and Jimmy and Michael Schmucker.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 8, at the Pagano Funeral Home. Interment was held in Mount Hope Cemetery in Aston, Pa.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
Earl Jay Jones II
Earl Jay Jones, II, of Newark, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Christiana Hospital. He was 57.
Mr. Jones was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. on September 27, 1947. He was employed as a salesperson for several local pest control companies.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Jay Jones; and brother, Randall K. Jones. He is survived by five children, Jennifer K. Olenderski and her husband, Jeff, of Bear; Juliette K. Jones of Wilmington; Jeffrey D. Jones and his wife, Laurie, of Smyrna; Joanna K. Weir and her husband, Chris, of Middletown; and Janet K. Jones of Newark; mother, Merle Jones of Newark; and four grandchildren, Kyliene M. Jones, Daniel W. Weir, Taryn E. Olenderski and Zachary C. Weir.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 5, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Ste. 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801.
Mildred Kaufman Campbell
Mildred Kaufman Campbell went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at her home after a courageous battle with leukemia. She was 75.
Mrs. Campbell was born November 22, 1929, one of four daughters of the late Joseph X. and Lovina Y. Kaufman of Hamilton Park, New Castle. She was a 1947 graduate of the former Brown Vocational High School in Wilmington, where she studied needle trades.
She worked as a seamstress for Wiltex Co. of Wilmington until her married to James Campbell, Jr., who was then in the U.S. Air Force.
In 1962, they moved to Kent County, where they lived the last 30 years in Dover. Mrs. Campbell was a born-again Christian and an active member of Faith Community Church in Camden, where children and adults knew her as "Miss Millie."
She was active for several years in the Fresh Air Fund program, hosting New York City children in her home during the summer. She also enjoyed traveling and was known locally for her love of babysitting.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, James Campbell, Jr.; son, Bruce Campbell and his wife, Terry, of Camden; daughter, Bonnie Stark and her husband, Anthony, of Middletown; six grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Campbell and Schaeffer, Sullivan, Schuler and Campbell Stark; and a sister, Evelyn K. Washall, of the Newark area.
Visitation was held Sunday evening, March 6, in the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. A memorial service was held on Monday, March 7, in Faith Community Church, 2240 S. DuPont Hwy., Camden. Burial was held in Sharon Hills Memorial Park.
