Michelene T. ‘Mickey’ Davis
Michelene T. “Mickey” Davis of Golts, Md., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was 72.

Born in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on April 22, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Margaret (Lasher) and Nathan Plass.

She was a resident of Delaware for 53 years. In the 1960’s, she served in the Delaware Legislature as Assistant Chief of Clerk of the House of Representatives, a position she was proud to hold. For 20 years she devoted her career to nursing. Mrs. Davis loved gardening, reading, traveling and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, involved in Hope Keepers and the Old Ladies Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Austin E. Davis; a son, Michael; two grandsons; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Kim and David Yoder of Golts; a loving son, Charles Duff of Florida and his former wife Sandra Duff of Florida; four grandsons, Billy Allgeier and his fiancé Callie of Golts, Chris Allgeier and his wife Tracy of Golts, Shawn and David Duff of Florida; her former husband, Charles Duff; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; two brothers; and numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 24at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, Middletown. Mrs. Davis was laid to rest beside her husband at Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Michelene T. Davis Memorial Fund c/o Mercantile Eastern Shore Bank, P. O. Box 106, Galena, MD 21635-0106.

James Bryan Ellis
James Bryan Ellis passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 45.

He is survived by a son, Justin Ellis of Bear; his parents, James and Carol Ellis of Townsend; two sisters, Kim Garey and her husband David of Denton, Md., and Tammy White and her husband Mark of Townsend; maternal grandparents, Mary Lynn and Franklin Shane of Middletown; a niece, Stephanie Newberry of Townsend; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were private.

James D. O’Neill Jr.
James D. O’Neill Jr. of Middletown passed away on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007. He was 79.

Mr. O’Neill was born in Wilmington on Feb. 25, 1927, son of the late James D. Sr. and Barbara (Regenaur) O’Neill. A veteran of the U.S. Army, James proudly and honorably served his country during WWII. He had most recently worked for General Motors as a bonderite operator until his retirement. An avid sports fan, he loyally and enthusiastically supported the University of Delaware and Philadelphia professional teams.

Mr. O’Neill was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Moralis) O’Neill.

He is survived by his son, James D. O’Neill III and his wife Denise A. of Middletown; a brother, Charles O’Neill; three sisters, Elizabeth McCloskey, Marie Wingate, and Theresa Balascio; two granddaughters, Shannon O’Neill, of Wilmington, and Valerie Taylor and her husband Robert of Mullica Hill, N.J.; a great-grandson, Zachary James Taylor; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Wilmington, on Feb. 28. Entombment followed in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice of Wilmington, 1407 Foulk Road, Suite 200, Wilmington, DE 19803; or the American Lung Association of Delaware, 1021 Gilpin Ave., Suite 202, Wilmington, DE 19806.

Nicholas “Nick” R. Arches
Nicholas R. Arches of Townsend passed away at home on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 51.

Born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Cecil County, Md., he was the son of Nick and Patricia (Schools) Arches.

Nick graduated from Northeast High School in 1973. He was an avid sportsman during his high school career with several varsity honors. He continued as a ball player on multiple softball teams over the past 20 years. He loved his motorcycles and boating with his first mate, “Duchess”, the family dog. He was employed with Chrysler Corp. in Newark for 28 years in skilled trades as a millwright. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Nick is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Theresa (Seaver) Arches; and his children, Aimee Kegley, Jesse Kegley, and Ryan Arches all of Townsend; three sisters, Evelyn Kennedy and her husband David of Elk Mills, Md., Diane Jones and her husband Edward of Earlville, Md., and Pam Turner and her companion Rudy Ribey of Abbington, Md.; along with nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held on Feb. 27 with funeral services following at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Internment was in Townsend Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, Inc., 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Rufus C. Black
Rufus C. Black of Newport, Tenn., passed away at his daughter’s home in New Castle on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 87.

Born on April 15, 1919, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., he was the son of the late William and Dora (Laws) Black. Mr. Black proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the former Electric Hose & Rubber Co. in Wilmington, and returned to Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry S. Black.

He leaves to mourn his loss, loving daughters, Brenda Hill and Janice Bockman of New Castle, and Jeanie Halter of Odessa; former wife, Naomi Black; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews, with heartfelt gratitude to his devoted niece, Peggy Baxter.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 24, at Brown Funeral Home in Newport, Tenn. Interment followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Dandridge,Tenn.

Frances M. ‘Aunt Te’ Harris
Frances M. “Aunt Te” Harris went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Broadmeadow Health Care, Middletown. She was 98.

Ms. Harris was born Oct. 13, 1908, in Middletown, daughter of the late Catherine (Mayhew) and Charles Harris.

She lived in the M.O.T. area her entire life.

Ms. Harris worked in the Middletown area as a school teacher from 1945 to 1948. In 1948, she went to work for the Delaware Trust Bank in Middletown, where she retired after 25 years of service as head teller in 1973.

Born and raised on a farm, she loved vegetable and flower gardening, and spent many hours outdoors. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. Many of her bus trips were taken with the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center. These “hobbies” kept her young at heart both physically and mentally.

Ms. Harris was a lifetime member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Grace Harris, Louise Pennewill and Rosalie Keithley; and a brother, Russell Harris.

She is survived by a nephew, Douglas A. Harris and his wife Evelyn of Townsend; two nieces, June Pennewill of Dover and Virginia Austin of Smyrna; and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Services were Feb. 10 at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, Middletown.

Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Chesapeake City, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the M.O.T. Senior Center, 300 S. Scott St., Middletown, DE 19709.

Mildred D. Derickson Woodward
Mildred D. Derickson Woodward died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Millcroft Retirement Home, Newark. She was 95.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, James L. Derickson Sr. in 1977 and by her second husband of 19 years, Horace M. Woodward who died in 1999.

She was a member of the Harmony Grange No. 12 and a 75-year member of the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a son, James L. Derickson Jr. (Jean K.); a daughter Mary Lou D. Boyce (Bill) and son Rodney L. Derickson (Gail S.) all of Wilmington; step-sons, David H. Woodward (Nancy J.), and Ray K. Woodward (Nancy M.) all of Middletown; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service of Celebration was held at the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennans Church Road on Feb. 21 with a time for fellowship afterward in Fellowship Hall. Burial was private.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennans Church Road,Wilmington, DE 19808.

Erna F. Adkins

Erna F. Adkins of Chesapeake City died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 from natural causes at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 77.

Mr. Adkins was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division in World War II, when he distinguished himself in four campaigns: Normandy, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars and a bronze service arrowhead and the French Croix de Guerre.

He worked for 20 years as an electrician for Thiokol Chemical Corp. in Elkton, Md., retiring in 1979.

Mr. Adkins also played minor-league baseball briefly, as well as semi-pro baseball and fast-pitch softball with numerous industrial teams.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annie McGuire Adkins; two sons, Ernie Lynn Adkins of Durham, N.C. and Gary Crowder of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Brenda Steller of Smyrna; two brothers, Robert Lowell Adkins of Lucasville, Ohio and Eugene Adkins of McDermott, Ohio; two sisters, Estalene Phipps of Lucasville and Phyllis Collell of Westerville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Bessie Adkins; two sons, Ernie Wayne Adkins and Neal Adkins; a brother, Earl Adkins; and two sisters, Vonnie Schinkle and Stella Foster .

Services were held Feb. 23 at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Homes, Middletown.

Burial was in Radford, Va.

Adelaide Green Chandler

Adelaide Green Chandler of Middletown died Friday, February 22, 2002. She was 89.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia E. Germani of Warner Robins, Ga.; a son, Richard Nelson (Joyce) of Middletown; six grandsons; and two great grandsons.

Services and burial were private.

Edwin A. “Budd” Dill

Edwin A. Dill of Middletown died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 suddenly at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 77.

Mr. Dill retired from General Motors in 1986 after more than 37 years of service. He served in the Pacific with the Navy Seabees during World War II.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middletown and taught religious education for 10 years. He headed the Old May Fair setup and cleanup group. Mr. Dill was past Grand Knight of the Old Bohemia Council #6543 Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree Knight. He was a very active member of the Old Bohemia Historical Society, Inc. and was head of maintenance at the St. Francis Xavier “Old Bohemia” Shrine. He was also a member of the Old Bohemia Cemetery Committee.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, A. Bernice (Kielkopf) Dill; three daughters, Pamela Kartachak of Bel Air, Md., Krista Staker and Maria Dill-Palmer, both of Bear; a twin sister, Doris Calhoun of Wilmington; a sister, Madelon Newton of Rising Sun, Md.; four granddaughters; and a grandson.

In addition to his parents, Fannie and Edgar Bill, Mr. Dill was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Mitchell, of Wilmington.

Services were held Feb. 17 at St. Joseph’s Price Hall, Middletown and Feb. 18 at St. Francis Xavier Shrine, Warwick, Md.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Old Bohemia Historical Society, PO Box 61, Warwick, MD 21912 or St. Joseph’s New Church Building Fund, PO Box 196, Middletown, DE 19709.

Sara A. DiRuggiero

Sarah A. DiRuggiero of New Castle, formerly of Parsippany, N.J., died Sunday, February 24, 2002. She was 80.

Mrs. DiRuggiero was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, with whom she lived, Judie Lardi; a son, Harold Dickinson of Yorkville, Ill.; a family friend, Michelle Langford; seven grandchildren, John Beaver of New Castle, Shari Dixon and William Lardi, both of Newark, Diana Rutkowski of Wilmington, Shelley Neall of Middletown, Tracey Dickinson of Sandwich, Ill. And Brandon Dickinson of Yorkville; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco V. DiRuggiero, in 1988.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 28 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle, where friends may call after 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Parkway, Minquadale, New Castle.

Charles Henry Duker, Sr.

Charles Henry Duker, Sr. of Townsend died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at home surrounded by family. He was 58.

Mr. Duker was the son of the late E. Francis and Ella Duker.

He is survived by a son, Charles Duker, Jr.; four brothers, Leroy, Carlton, Calvin and Eugene; six sisters, Edith, Rosa, Harriet, Carolyn, Carla and Mary; and many aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held Feb. 27 at the House of Wright Mortuary, Smyrna.

James S. Hairgrove

James S. Hairgrove of Clayton died Sunday, February 24, 2002 in Capital Nursing Home, Dover. He was 90.

Mr. Hairgrove was a former part owner with Mr. Lynnden Bower of the Smyrna Exxon gas station and retired in 1975 after 25 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Diane Towns of Clayton; and a grandson, who cared for him prior to his stay in the nursing home, James Towns of Middletown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred T. Hairgrove, in 1991.

Services were held Feb. 27 at Faries Funeral Home, Smyrna.

Interment was in Old Drawyers Cemetery, north of Odessa.

Virginia Amy Jacobs

Virginia Amy Jacobs of New Castle died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 76.

Mrs. Jacobs had been employed as a secretary for the American Can Company in New Castle. She was a member of the Wesley Senior Center in Wilmington Manor. She loved to crochet and make ceramics.

She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Mose F. Jacobs; three children, Jacqualine Dodd of Wilmington, Martha J. Delaney of Jacksonville, Fla. and Thomas L. Jacobs of Middletown; four siblings, Thelma Samluck of Wilmington, Clyde Bell of Aberdeen, Md., Gladys Hewes and Eugene Bell, both of New Castle; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 26 in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

Burial was in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation, 325 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Joseph C. Jarrell

Joseph C. Jarrell of Stanton, formerly of Warwick, Md., died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 79.

Mr. Jarrell was born April 12, 1922, son of the late James and Blanche Dixon Jarrell. He was raised and worked on the family dairy farm in Middletown until retiring in 1964. He had worked for nine years with the grounds crew at the University of Delaware, retiring in 1987. Mr. Jarrell also sold produce on Old Capitol Trail. He was a member of St. Marks U.M. Church, and was a member of the F.F.A. and the 4-H Club of Delaware.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Doris Barlow Cox-Jarrell; a daughter, Marybeth Raynor (David) of Warwick; a step son, Brian Cox of Pennsville, N.J.; a step daughter, Barbara Cox-Feeley of Bear; a brother, James “Sock” Jarrell of Stanton; a sister, Alice McQuate of Stanton; three grandsons, Andrew Feeley, Troy Ralston and Tyler Cox; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothea, in 1989; and a step daughter, Peggy Ralston-Dost, in 2001.

Services were held Feb. 25 at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, Galena, Md.

Burial was in Galena Cemetery, Galena.

Lafayette J. Jones

Lafayette J. Jones of Middletown died Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Riverside Extended Care. He was 87.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Jones; and a child, Lee Jones.

He is survived by eight children, Wessie Warrick of Middletown, Virginia Bratcher and Betty Loatman, both of Wilmington, Rev. Willie Allen of Phomfret, Md., Jerry Jones of Lealand, N.C., Cleathus Jones of N.C., Crystal Best of Bolton, N.C. and Mary Conyers of N.Y.; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Feb. 28 at the House of Wright Mortuary, 208 East 35th Street, Wilmington.

Further services will be in Green Chapel, Bolton, N.C.
