Robert W. ‘Boaty’ Akin
Robert W. “Boaty” Akin of Frederica passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at the Heartland Hospice House in Pike Creek Delaware. He was 85.

Born on Aug. 2, 1921, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Nettie Akin.

Mr. Akin served his country proudly with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a successful man who moved to Ocean City, Md., in the forties. In 1947 he married Evelyn Cropper. He worked for C & P Telephone and was involved in a host of social organizations including the American Legion Post No. 166, where he was a Commander from 1953 to 1954 and again from 1961 to 1962; Ocean City Fire Department serving as both president and active chief, and the Masonic Lodge where he worked his way up to a 32nd Degree Mason and Rajah Shriner. In 1961 he moved to Reading, Pa., where he and two of his close friends operated a Metal Engineering Company. In 1966 he met and married his second wife, Dolores Alex. Mr. Akin had a very closely knit relationship with his family members and a multitude of friends. He was a very loving and kind individual. His vivacious personality made him loved by all.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Akin was preceded in death by his twin sister, Dorothy Akin Winter in 1969; his wife, Dolores M. (Alex) Akin on July 6, 2006; and a brother, William Akin.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Jeanette (Jan) Akin Blades and her companion of Frederica; a son, Michael J. Akin and his wife Sherry of Middletown; a sister, Virginia Watson of Chester, Va.; and three grandchildren, Tiffany Nicole Akin, Christopher Akin and Stephanie Paoletti; as well as several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, from the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where family and friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be private.

Donations would be appreciated in lieu of flowers to Heartland Hospice Services, Inc., The Stockton Building, 261 Chapman Road, Suite 100, Newark, DE 19702; or to Delaware ASPCA, P.O. Box 6067, Stanton, DE 19804-6067.

Eugene M. Wichlinski
Eugene M. Wichlinski of New Castle passed away on Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 93.

Mr. Wichlinkski was born in Wilmington. He resided in Poland until 1936, at which time he returned to Wilmington.

He served in U.S. Army with the 43rd Infantry Division for three years in the Pacific during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and numerous other awards.

He was employed by Halby Chemical of Wilmington.

Mr. Wichlinkski was Past Commander of the Delaware Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 5, in Newark.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kanicki Wichlinski, in 2001; and a brother, Stephen Wichlinski.

He is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Elaine and Tim LaMarche of Middletown; a son and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Jackie Johnson of Clayton; a niece, Lucille Hansen; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A committal service was held on Jan. 26, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 407, Camden, DE 19934; or to the St. Joseph’s Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 630, Middletown, DE 19709.

Charles ‘Buckie’ Gorsuch Bartlett II

Charles “Buckie” Gorsuch Bartlett II of Cecilton, Md., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, in his home, surrounded by family and friends. He was 68.

Mr. Bartlett was born in Dover and raised in Wilmington.

In his early years, he was active in the Delaware Army National Guard.

He was employed by Labadie Mill Farms, Colonial Metals in Elkton, Md., as a maintenance engineer, Mumford & Miller, and later retired as a truck driver.

Mr. Bartlett was known as a “jack-of-all-trades”. During his retirement, he could be found in his garage building various projects, bird houses and ornamental lawn decorations. He had a fondness for the Chesapeake Bay area, where he enjoyed fishing, crabbing, hunting and the beach.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Berry Bartlett; three sisters, Joann Ebert of Bear and Pam Patille and Marian Snow, both of North Carolina; three daughters and a son-in-law, Marlene and Harold Bradley of Elkton, Md., Kelli Bartlett of Middletown and Melanie McGuire of Cecilton, Md.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Bartlett III of Earleville, Md., and Wilson “Bill” and Gayle Bartlett of Clayton; six grandchildren, Jennifer Bradley, Holly Bradley, Jessica Phipps, Brittani Bartlett, Leo McGuire and Harold Bradley II; a great-granddaughter, Shelby Zoe; a host nieces and nephews; and two adoring and loving pets, Bumper and Muffin.

Services were held on Jan. 26.

Burial was in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Earleville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Seasons Hospice, 133 N. Bridge St., Elkton, MD 21921.

Lester M. Perry II
Lester M. Perry II of Townsend died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in his home. He was 73.

Mr. Perry was born Jan. 21, 1934, in Salt Rock, W.Va., the son of the late Lester M. and Beatrice Cook Perry.

He worked in the shipping and receiving department at Chrysler in Newark for 30 years before retirement.

He enjoyed antique tractors and bowling.

Mr. Perry was a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Townsend, where he served as a Deacon for 20 years, and a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Ellen Gill Perry; a son and a daughter-in-law, Lester M. III and Nancy Perry of Townsend; a daughter and a son-in-law, Cathy Gill and John Meginniss of Bear; two sisters, Elizabeth Scites of West Hamlin, W.Va., and Billie Jo Spears of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jon Perry, Michael Perry and Nathan Meginniss; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Gregory and Jon Ellis.

Services were held Jan. 27 at Freewill Baptist Church, Townsend.

Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Helen Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Raod, Newark, DE 19713.

Wayne ‘Kulu’ Louis Broadard
Wayne “Kulu” Louis Broadard of Townsend departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. He was 53.

Mr. Broadard was born July 12, 1953, in Wilmington, the son of the late Clarence E. and Elsie Parsons Broadard.

He is survived by his children, Shameeka DeShields, DeRhonda Carter, Craig Smith and Blane Moxley; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Doc and Rose Parsons and Edwin L. Sr. and Priscilla Broadard; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Shirley Short-Hall, Phyllis and Morris Scales, Angie and Vester Triplett, Sheyla Church and Vanessa Broadard-Dorsey and Charles Dorsey; seven grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 27 at St. Jude’s Bread of Life Christian Church.

Norris A. McNatt Sr.
Mr. Norris A. McNatt Sr. of Port Penn died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 74.

Mr. McNatt was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Smyrna, son of the late Marion C. and Sadie Houck McNatt.

He retired from the former Electric Hose and Rubber Company in Wilmington after 23 years of service.

He greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing in his leisure time.

Mr. McNatt was a Life Member of Port Penn Fire Company .

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna J. Davis McNatt, in 1988; and a half-brother, Thomas NcNabb.

He is survived by four children, Norris A. McNatt Jr. of Port Penn, Edna J. DiVirgilis of Dover, Susan A. Taylor of Port Penn and Rebecca M. McAvaney of Newark; two grandchildren, Fran Ruba Jr. and Amber McAvaney; a sister, Bessie I. Hession of Smyrna; five half-brothers, Delancy Pryor of Newport News, Va., Shanley Smith of Felton. Kenneth Smith of Frederica, Sydney Smith of Dover and William Smith of Smyrna; two half-sisters, Doris Kessiagion of Dover and Maryanne Couture of Millsboro; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Jan. 29, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Delaware City. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Port Penn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Ste. 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801.

John A. Sager
John A. Sager of Chesapeake City, Md., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at home. He was 93.

Mr. Sager was born on March 12, 1913, in Chesapeake City, son of the late John and Elizabeth Sager.

He was a 1931 graduate of Chesapeake City High School and spent two years at the Baltimore Vocational School, where he learned the machinist trade.

He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was trained at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois and was there for about three months. He was then transferred to California and picked up on a Dutch Tramp Ship at Treasure Island that landed in New Caledonia. He was then assigned to the U.S.S. Chenango as a Fireman First Class. He served in five invasions and received the American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific-5 Stars, Philippine Liberation-2 Stars, Victory Medal and USS Chenango CVE 28 Navy Unit Commendation. His ship was one of the first to go into Nagasaki, Japan, after the atom bomb was dropped, to pick up prisoners of war. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 25, 1945.

Mr. Sager was a machinist for Avisun, later known as Amoco, from 1960 until retiring in 1978.

He enjoyed being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Sager was a life member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a Mason with the Cecil Lodge No. 125 AF&AM, both in Chesapeake City.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bertha J. Sager of Chesapeake City; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara S. and Ronald Dean of Chesapeake City and Mary S. and Greg Claypool of Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Michael Mabry and his wife, Marcia, of Galena, Md., John Mabry and his wife, Ann, of St. Louis, Mo., Jennifer Long and her husband, Ken, of Warwick, Md., Devin Claypool and his wife, Shannon, of Denver, Colo., Lynnelle Claypool of Louisville, Ronald Dean II and his wife, Sandy, of Elkton, Md.; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Jan. 27, at R. T. Foard Funeral Home, Chesapeake City.

Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Chesapeake City. Military honors were be provided by the American Legion Mason Dixon Post 194 Honor Guard.

Walter R. Broadbent, Jr.
Walter R. Broadbent Jr. of Arden passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in his home. He was 75.

Mr. Broadbent was employed as a chemical operator with the Sun Oil Company before retiring after 44 years of dedicated service.

He was very talented with his hands and was known to be a local artist as well as a skilled carver and sculptor. Bird watching was also a part of his leisure enjoyments.

Mr. Broadbent was a member of the Danish Brotherhood in Morton, Pa.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lizzie (Pedersen) Broadbent; three daughters, Tina T. Broadbent of Middletown, Hedie A. Broadbent of Reading, Pa., and Bridget B. Lee of Maine; a sister, Carol Villanueva; and five grandchildren.

Burial will be private.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

John Joseph Fresconi
John Joseph Fresconi of New Castle died on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, in his home. He was 88.

Mr. Fresconi was born in New Castle, son of the late Michael Fresconi (Michele Fiasconi) and Rosaria DiGiuseppe Fresconi Cassetta.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1941 to 1945.

He began his career as a crane operator for the old shipbuilding company, Pusey & Jones. He also worked for Phoenix Steel, and ultimately retired from Westinghouse Electric.

Mr. Fresconi thoroughly enjoyed sports, horseracing, bowling, fishing and playing cards. In his earlier years, he played fast pitch softball for the Pusey & Jones company team.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fresconi was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Fresconi, Andrew Fresconi and Patrick Cassetta; and a sister, Antoinette Fresconi.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katherine Mae Andrews Fresconi of New Castle; three sons and two daughters-in-law, John Michael Fresconi of New Castle, Gary Mark and Therese C. Fresconi of Malvern, Pa., and Daniel Joseph and Therese M. Fresconi of Middletown; two sisters and a son-in-law, Josephine and Robert Thomas and Mary Fresconi, all of New Castle; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Schmidt, Mary Schmidt, Gabriel Mark Frescon and Nicholas Daniel Fresconi; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Jan. 31 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, New Castle.

Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Michael ‘Mickey’ D. Dashiell
Michael “Mickey” Dashiell of Middletown entered his heavenly life on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007.

Mr. Dashiell was born in Washington, D.C., and spent most of his life in Montgomery County, Md. He was a printer with The Washington Post for more than 25 years prior to his retirement in 1998.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marie; a son and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, and a son-in-law Michelle and Eric Brousaides of Columbia, Md.; two granddaughters, Rachel and Stephanie Dashiell, of whom he was very proud; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Pat and Jerry Moorman of Kettering, Ohio, and Ruby and Roy Stroud of Kissimmee, Fla.; an uncle, Mike Tozzolo of Silver Spring, Md.; also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was held Jan. 31.

Burial was in All Souls Cemetery in Germantown, Md.

Anna Helen (Judge) Cheseroni

Anna Helen Cheseroni of Wilmington died Friday, January 25, 2002. She was 82.

Mrs. Cheseroni worked as a cook for Madeline’s Restaurant in Wilmington and for Alexander’s Sitting Agency and was known by the children as “Mrs. C.”

She is survived by a son, James P. Cheseroni (Beatrice) of Townsend; three daughters, Rosalie A. Modesto (Phillip) and Nancy R. Catalina both of Wilmington and Carmella A. Lardi, with whom she lived, also of Wilmington; a sister, Irene Toy of Elsmere; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cheseroni; and a son, William A. Cheseroni, Jr.

Services were held Jan. 29 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Wilmington.

Interment was in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army.

Charles John Cushing, Sr.

Charles John Cushing, Sr. of New Castle died Friday, January 25, 2002 at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 83.

Mr. Cushing was a foreman with Amtrak at the Wilmington Ships, retiring in 1982 after 46 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and its Leisure Club and he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and birdwatching.

A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3257 in Wilmington, Mr. Cushing was a US Army veteran of WW II, during which he served in the Burma-India Theatre.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor T. McMenamin Cushing; five sons, Charles “Chuck” Cushing (Susan) of Bear, Daniel “Tom” Cushing (Lori) of Hockessin, John “Jack” Cushing (Maureen) of New Castle, Michael Cushing (Laura) of Middletown and Mark Cushing (Kim) of Glen Mills, Pa.; a daughter, Donna Soltman (Alan) of Woodland Hills, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Stark of Wilmington; and 10 grandchildren, Jeremy, John, Joseph, Evan, Caryn, Stephen, Elizabeth, Emily, Rachel and Jeffrey.

Services were held Jan. 28 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, New Castle.

Interment was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Cherry Hill, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Our Lady of Fatima Outreach, 801 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720.

Doris June Dunfee

Doris June Dunfee of Kennett Square, Pa. died Saturday, January 26, 2002 at HCR Manorcare in Wilmington. She was 71.

Mrs. Dunfee was formerly a clerk at Thrift Drugs in Bear and had also worked in Jamesway in Kennett Square. She was a Past Noble Grand for the New Century Rebekah Lodge #224 in Cochranville, Pa., a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #5956 in Manheim, Pa. and a member and past Treasurer of the UMW Group of Hamorton Methodist Church in Kennett Square.

She is survived by two sons, Arthur E. Dunfee, Jr. of Newark and Howard E. Dunfee of Malvern, Pa.; four daughters, Marie A. Jones of Selma, N.C., Ruth A. Taylor of Kennett Square, Pa., Karen S. Detweiler of Middletown and Deborah L. Kukulich of Bear; a sister, Alice Craig of Parksley, Va.; a brother, Clyde Randow of Oxford, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Dunfee, in 1985.

Services were held Jan. 30 at Chandler Funeral Home, Hockessin.

Interment was in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Anna M. Eisenhauer

Anna M. Eisenhauer of New Castle died Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at Wilmington Hospital. She was 83.

Mrs. Eisenhauer had been a cake icer at the former Federal Bakery in Wilmington, retiring after more than 25 years of service. She was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish, an avid baseball fan and enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by a son, Larry L. Eisenhauer (Ronnie Lee) of New Castle; five daughters, Rose P. Callahan and Theresa I. Smith, both of New Castle, Eleanor A. Knorr (William) of Odessa, Anna E. Brown (Charles) of Newark and Nancy A. Camponelli (Paul) of Bear; a brother, Louis S. Cheslock of Wilmington; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Jan. 26 at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, New Castle.

Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
