He was born March 30, 1921, the son of the late James M. Bishop Sr. and Elizabeth Price Bishop.
Mr. Bishop served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated World War II veteran, receiving the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat.
After his time in the Army, he owned and operated a milk truck delivery service for several years. He retired from Libby, McNeil, and Libby Cannery in 1970 after twenty-five years of service.
In his younger years, he built and flew model airplanes, had a large model railroad, and bred and showed rabbit beagles. In addition, he was an avid bowler, hunter, and fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Joan Ann Bishop, in 1947.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Stella Cahall Bishop; two daughters, Marlyn Barr, of Magnolia; and Janet Durham, of Smyrna; a sister, Jean Green, of Dover; three granddaughters, Lori Mayes, of Smyrna; Pam Barr, of Smyrna; and Joanne Donovan and her husband Terry of Felton; three great-granddaughters, Brittney and Lauren Donovan, of Felton; and Kimberly Mayes, of Smyrna.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 16 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, in Smyrna.
Interment was in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
Estella Cahall Bishop
Mrs. Bishop was born in Hartly on October 16, 1921, the daughter of the late Charles J. Cahall and Mabel Mitchell Cahall.
She worked many years for Libby, McNeil, and Libby, and also worked as a supervisor for W.T. Grant Co. for more than 20 years. In addition, she worked for Kershaw s Hardware for five years. She was forced to stop working due to poor health.
Mrs. Bishop loved to play the piano and organ, and spent many hours with her daughters singing while she played. She also enjoyed cooking, and was an avid reader and history buff. One of her greatest joys in life was her granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James M. Bishop Jr., who died on Monday January 12, 2004; a brother, Charles A. Cahall; and an infant daughter, Joan Ann Bishop, in 1947.
She is survived by two daughters, Marlyn Barr, of Magnolia; and Janet Durham, of Smyrna; three granddaughters, Lori Mayes and Pam Barr, both of Smyrna; and Joanne Donovan and her husband Terry, of Felton; three great-granddaughters, Brittney and Lauren Donovan, of Felton; and Kimberly KiKi Mayes, of Smyrna.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.
Interment will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
Dr. Ray M. Sammons Jr.
He was born in Chester, Pa. on July 27, 1923, and had served in the Army Air Corps during World War II until he was honorably discharged after the war.
Dr. Sammons was self-employed as a veterinarian at Smyrna Animal Hospital for the last 48 years, until his retirement in July 2003.
He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Smyrna, where he served the church in many ways including serving as a Deacon. He belonged to numerous organizations including the American Veterinarian Medical Association, American Legion Post 14, VFW Post 8801, and a member of the Masons at Harmony Lodge #13.
His mother, father, sister and beloved wife, Constance Sammons, preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Arthur Slouka, of Illinois; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Susan Sammons III, of Smyrna; six grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Alyssa Slouka, Melanie Lowman, Danielle Wilczynski, and Ray M. Sammons IV; and three great-grandchildren, Bruce M. Lowman III, and Michael and Stosh Wilczynski.
Services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at First Presbyterian Church, in Smyrna.
Interment was in St. Georges Cemetery.

Helen Aneta Bates
Born in Babylon, N.Y., she was a graduate of Balboa High School in Panama and the New York Conservatory of Music in New York City.
Mrs. Bates taught piano for three decades in Babylon, N.Y.
Following that, she and her husband owned the Fieldstone Motel in the Fieldsboro area of Middletown, for more than 20 years.
Active until May 2003, reading was her favorite pastime and she was a member of the Babylon Travelers Society and the Panama Canal Society.
She was the wife of the late Stuart Frazer Bates; the mother of the late Betty Joan (Bates) Nilsen; and the mother-in-law of the late Roy H. Nilsen, both of Wilmington.
Survivors include her granddaughter with whom she lived, Susan Aneta Nilsen of Natick, Mass.; and her sister, Althea Albin Baldwin of Babylon, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Phillip C. Eaton, Sr.
He was preceded in death by his son, John, and his parents, Carl and Grace Eaton.
Phil is survived by his son, Phil, of Dover; his daughter, Jane; brother, Sam; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Jim Schaffer, all of Port Penn; three nephews; four nieces; and nine great nephews and nieces.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Port Penn.

Carol Gillard
After a long courageous struggle with her disability and illness, she left to join her beloved mother and father, Edna Tingle Nordquist and Sven E. Nordquist.
Born in Wilmington on August 6, 1945, Carol was a graduate of PS DuPont High School.
Carol began her professional career as a banquet sales manager at the Sheraton-Inn on Concord Pike.
She later joined W.L. Gore & Associates in 1980, her dream job, and served as the head of travel and relocation until her disability forced her to step down in 1994.
Her true passions blossomed from her disability as she discovered her love of interior decoration, her grandchildren, the beach and working on charitable functions with the Opportunity Center Inc. in Wilmington.
Carol, a charter member of the OCI Fashion Show Committee, yearned to make a difference.
Carol is survived by her only son, Bryan Cheeseman and his wife, Michele of Thornton, Pa.; granddaughters, Kayla and Cassandra Cheeseman; grandson, Kyle Cheeseman; previous husband, Ronald Cheeseman of Summit; previous husband; Lawrence Gillard of Ortonville Mich.; aunt, Evelyn Moree of Salisbury, Md.; and sister, Margaret Carter of Wilmington.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 16.

Mary L. Kacprzyk
Mrs. Kacprzyk was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family, going to Delaware Park and was a knowledgeable sports enthusiast.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Kacprzyk in 1978. She was also predeceased by a special friend, Richard S. Crews.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann DiRocco and her husband, Chick of Townsend; her sons, John J. Kacprzyk of Newark, and Steven J. Kacprzyk and his wife, Lana, of Middletown; her grandchildren, Krissy, Tammy, Brittney, Matthew, Alyssa and Ryan; her great granddaughter, Brianna; and her sister, Doris McGonigle of Wilmington.
Funeral services were held at Doherty Funeral Home, on Thursday, January 15.
Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery.

Tommy Lee Hicks
Tommy retired in 2003 after 27 years with Allied Systems in Newark. He was currently employed by the Christina School District Transportation Department. Tommy was a member of the Masonic Lodge #5 of Middletown, the Nur Temple, New Castle, the Teamsters Local 326, Diamonds M/C Club and ABATE.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Gloria; his children, Wendy Longacre of Lewes, Thomas Hicks of Middletown, Dale Hicks and his companion, Brandy, of Townsend, Tonya Carey and her husband, Keith, of Middletown, Krista Nantais of Newark and Kevyn Hicks of Middletown; a sister, Patricia Martin of Loveville, Md.; 10 beloved grandchildren; and numerous nieces; nephews; and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Middletown Fire Hall.
Burial was in Asbury Cemetery, Millington, Md.

Bernard C. Hypes
Mr. Hypes retired in 1982 after 20 years at General Motors Corp. He was an Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the Full Gospel Church of Clayton and had volunteered at the Salvation Army in Smyrna.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen; a son, Bernard, Jr. of Bear; two daughters, Vina Bright of Blackbird and Sharon McMillan of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Dessie Hill of Galax, Va.; eight grandchildren, Joe, Bernie, Bud, David, Aaron, Crystal, Art and Valarie; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Vina Hypes; and two brothers, Clarence and Fred Hypes.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 19, in the Full Gospel Church, in Clayton. Burial was in Sharon Hills Cemetery, Dover.
Nancy Rhoades Taylor
Mrs. Taylor was born and raised in Port Penn. She was a homemaker and a loving mother. She will be loved and missed by all.
Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by a brother, James Rhoades, and two sisters, Mary and Brenda Rhoades.
She is survived by four daughters, Tine Rhoades of Milford, Stephanie Durham of Dover, Samantha Durham of Dover, Samantha and Shaina Rhoades both of Dover; two grandsons, David Tyler, Jr. and William Stunir; two brothers, Albert Rhoades of Marydel and Ronnie Rhoades of Dover; four sisters, Lydia Blanchfield of Magnolia, Henrietta Aronld of New Castle, Marie Bolt of NorthEast, Md., and Louise McCabe of Snow Hill, Md.; and her lifelong companion, Wayne Carroll, of Dover.
Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Faith Baptist Church, 1575 Bryn-Zion Rd., off Route 300, west of Smyrna. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Church. Burial will be in Thomas Chapel Cemetery, Chapeltown.

M. Patricia George
Mrs. George was born March 17, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter of the late Robert and Beryhadine Wood. She moved to Delaware County, Pa. in 1961.
She retired from Central Parking Systems at the Philadelphia Airport where she had worked as a cashier.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bud, Jerry and Johnny.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Ben; four sons, Clay of Darby, Pa., Christopher of Ridley Park, Pa., Barron Bear of Norwood, Pa. and Ben of Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters Teri Demarco of Philadelphia, Pa., and Vickie Farmer of Delaware; a brother Bobby Wood of Greenbriar, Ark., a sister, Jane Sallows of Pittsburgh; a dear friend, Mary Lou Hickman of Collingdale; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, Jan. 18, in the Church of Christ in Ridley Township, Pa. Burial was private.
