Carolyn Price Akers, 64
HAMPTON, Va. - Carolyn Price Akers of Hampton died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002. She was 64.
Mrs. Akers was born in Chance, Md., daughter of the late Marion and Alma Price. She had been a Hampton resident since 1960.
She retired from Hastings Raydist in 1997 after 29 years of service.
Mrs. Akers was a member of the Hampton Roads Bowling Association, National Amateur Bowling Inc., and the Hampton Women's Bowling Association, as well as a past member of the Emblem Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Price, and a sister, Marion Anderson.
She is survived by her husband, Jack L. Akers Sr.; a daughter, Valerie A. Warren and husband Jeff; a son, Jack L. Akers Jr. and wife Debra; seven sisters, Doris Mae Crabtree, Janet Price, Jean Scott, Shirley Reichelt, Phyllis Pisacano, Christina Nickerson and Joanna Likens; and four grandchildren, April, Jake, Drew and Loreigh.
Friends called Sunday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
Services will be 10 a.m. today in the funeral home. The Rev. William Barnes will officiate.
Burial to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.

Arthur W. Beever, 77
DENTON, Md. - Arthur W. Beever of Denton died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in the Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 77.
Mr. Beever was born in Baltimore. He had lived in Harford County, then Anne Arundel County then moved to Denton in 1976 where he was a general contractor.
He was a World War II Navy veteran having served in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Beever and his wife had been foster parents to more than 65 children.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lorraine M. Beever, on Aug. 8, 1999, and a daughter, Cheryl Darling, in 1983.
He is survived by a son, William A. Beever, and his wife, Debby, of Denton; five daughters, Donna Ziegfeld and her husband, Steven, of Jarretsville, Bev G. Kehr of Allenhurst, Ga., Vanessa Bain and her husband, Don, of Greenwich, N.Y., Valerie Myers and her husband, Roy, of Carlisle, Pa. and Jeanne L. Scott and her husband, Tom, of Denton; a foster son, Ernie Cash of Baltimore; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Pauline Virginia Powell 'Polly' Hastings, 84
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Pauline Virginia Powell "Polly" Hastings of Federalsburg died, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in her daughter's home. She was 84.
Mrs. Hastings was born May 18, 1918, in Frederick, Md., she was the only daughter of the late Raymond Erickson Powell and Myrtle House Powell Bear and stepdaughter of the late John Worthington Bear.
Raised in Frederick Md., she was valedictorian of her graduating class of Frederick High School class of 1935. Following her graduation, she moved to Baltimore and worked for the University of Maryland Dental School and met Ernest F. Hastings and they were married on Feb. 1, 1944. She and her new family moved to Federalsburg in 1948. "Polly" as she was best known and her husband Ernest "Fiddler" Hastings owned and operated Hastings Food Market in Federalsburg for many years. He died on April 8, 2002.
Mrs. Hastings was a member of Christ United Methodist Church the Philethea Circle of the church. In addition to her memberships, were the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 5246 and the Former Nanticoke Chapter 6, and Order of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Powell, Donald Powell and Jack Powell.
She is survived by a loving daughter, Brenda Walker, and her husband, Jim, of Federalsburg; two loving sons, Frank Hastings and his wife, Gail, of Delmar and Gary Hastings and his wife, Georgia, of Newtown; six loving grandchildren, Brad Hastings of Easton, Matt Hastings of Delmar, Jaime Walker of Baltimore, Janna Walker of Federalsburg, Jeffrey Hastings of Newtown, Pa. and Jeni Hastings of Newtown; a brother, Richard Powell of Hagerstown; a loving caregiver, Elaine Phillips and a loyal friend, Ann Wyatt, both of Federalsburg;
Mrs. Hastings will be remembered for her service of others and her faith in God. She was a loving mother and a very proud grandmother.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg, MD.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. The Rev. Glenn Lyburn and the Rev. David Heistant will officiate.

Ruth C. Hood, 72
LINCOLN - Ruth C. Hood of Lincoln, formerly of Claymont, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 72.
Mrs. Hood was employed for 17 years as an aid in a workshop for the handicapped in Wilmington. After her move to Lincoln, she worked as a hostess at the Shawnee Country Club in Milford.
She is survived by a son, Barry M. Hood of Lester, Pa. and four grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private

William 'Sonny' Manko Jr., 64
DOVER - William 'Sonny' Manko Jr. of Dover, and formerly of Boothwyn, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 64.
Mr. Manko was born in Chester, Pa., son of the late William and Laura Manko. He was raised in Trainer, Pa.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1963 until 1967.
Mr. Manko was a musician for 30 years and was also the leader of a band, The Royal Imperials, from 1950 until he joined the service. He continued entertaining with his accordion and keyboard, playing Polish music, and still loved making tapes for everyone.
Mr. Manko is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Arlene Scope Manko; his son, Joseph C. Manko and his wife, Frances, of Boothwyn, Pa.; two daughters, Christine Woleslagle of Dover and Patricia Ann Faith Cahee and her husband, David, of Rutland, Vt.; two brothers, George Manko of Bear and Richard Manko of Williamstown, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Candice Manko, Micheal Woleslagle, Ashley Manko, John Cahee, William Cahee, Tyler Manko and Christopher Manko.
Chapel services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Herman W. Ossman Jr., 64
CLAYTON - Herman W. Ossman Jr. of Clayton died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Bay/Health Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 64.
Mr. Ossman graduated from Mayville high school in New York State in 1956.
After he graduated, Mr. Ossman enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served until his discharge in February of 1961.
He than went to work for the MST Bank in Buffalo, N.Y. where he was employed as a computer specialist. He moved to the Dover area in 1990 and was employed as an accountant for the Emlyn Construction Co. for the past 12 years.
He is survived by four brothers, Paul Ossman of Westfield, N.Y., Floyd Ossman of Pasco, Wash., Fred Ossman of Portland, N.Y. and Leo Ossman of Dover; and three sisters, Betty Overlander of Westfield, N.Y., Dorathy Walker of Brockton, N.Y. and Mary Ossman of North East, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

Augustus 'Gus' Tucker, 80
GOLDSBORO, Md. - Augustus "Gus" Tucker of Goldsboro died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in his home. He was 80.
Mr. Tucker was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Baltimore County, Md., son of the late Wilson and Louise Jakum Tucker. He moved to the Eastern Shore in 1970.
Mr. Tucker was an Army veteran of World War II and worked in Baltimore as a maintenance engineer until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Tucker; four children, Ruth Mansfield and Grady Tucker of Henderson and James Tucker of Hartly and William Tucker of Trappe, Md.; six grandchilren; Karen Wheatley of Hurlock, Md., Judy Blockston of Federalsburg, Md., Ben and Kate Tucker, Jeremy and Joshua Tucher; and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Jacob Wheatley.

Victoria Lula Johnson Tilghman, 83
BRIDGEVILLE - Victoria Lula Johnson Tilghman of Bridgeville died in her sleep Sunday, May 18, 2003, in her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Tilghman was born in Feb. 21, 1920, in Pinetown, Md., the middle of three daughters of the late Lewis and Gertrude Johnson.
She was a proud alumna of Lockerman School and Delaware State College (now University).
She taught in the public schools in Delaware, such as the Blackwater School and Middleford School, and in Maryland at Hurlock Elementary and North Dorchester schools.
After retirement, Mrs. Tilghman substitute-taught, continued to travel and remained involved in civic organizations, including service to her church.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles Tilghman; a sister, Marian I. Seymore Johnson of Easton, Pa.; a son and daughter; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Zion United Methodist Church, Federalsburg, Md., where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Federal Hill Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Ida Elizabeth Workman Dickerson, 86
HARRINGTON - Ida Elizabeth Workman Dickerson of Harrington died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 86.
Mrs. Dickerson was born in Georgetown, daughter of the late John Henry and Ryla Mae (Waller) Workman.
Mrs. Dickerson graduated from Milton High School in 1933, and was valedictorian.
She began working for Bill McDaniel's Print Shop, where she used to set up print. Mrs. Dickerson then worked in the office of Huber's Sunbeam Baking Co., Harrington, for a few years. She then went to work as a clerk at Silco, a variety store in Harrington. She worked as supervisor over the soda fountain at PennSupreme Ice Cream, Harrington, and also worked at Torches Canning Factory, Milford, as a payroll clerk for several years. She then went to work at ILC, Dover, for 10 years, where she was in charge of procuring bids for the astronauts' spacesuits. While at ILC, she had the privilege of working with and meeting several of the astronauts involved in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. She retired from ILC as a payroll supervisor.
Mrs. Dickerson was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrington.
During World War II, she was an airplane spotter and also became a certified Red Cross volunteer. She helped out as a choir mother for the Junior Choir at Asbury United Methodist Church. She supported both the junior and senior bands in the Harrington School District. She even made the uniforms for the junior high school band.
She was a member of the Milford Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, working in the hospital gift shop, and was a member of the Harrington Senior Center. She was also a 50-plus-year member of the Merrymakers, for which she served two terms as president.
Mrs. Dickerson was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Dickerson, on Nov. 12, 2000.
She is survived by a son, John R. Dickerson of Harrington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Joann D. Everett of Wyoming and Bonnie Cullen and her husband, Frank, of Easton, Pa.; five grandchildren, Eric Wilber, Kurt Wilber, Russel Jarrell, Kim Murtha and Kelly Mereider; seven great-grandchildren, Louis Calderon III, Trevor Calderon, Austin Murtha, Autumn Stevens, twins Alexandra and Taylor Mereider, and Madeline Wilber; a great-great-grandson, Shawn Sanford; and an extended family of Dr. Robert and Nancy Ricker and their children Cathy, Susan, Ruthie and Roberta.
A service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Ave., Harrington, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford-Harrington Highway, Harrington.

Granville Barrington Barrett Sr., 76
LEWES - Granville Barrington Barrett Sr. of Lewes died Friday, May 18, 2001, in his home. He was 76.
Mr. Barrett was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Spanish Town, Jamaica/West Indies, son of the late Edith V. Ellis and Robert Barrett.
He came to the United States as a farm worker in 1944, where he met and married Dolores "Sis" Burton.
Mr. Barrett later moved to Lewes, where he reared his family of seven children.
He retired in 1986 from Kraft General Foods, Dover, after 20 years. Also, he operated Granville's Custodial until his illness.
Mr. Barrett was a member of St. George African Methodist Episcopal Church, and belonged to the Senior Choir. He was also a member of the West Indian Club, maintaining his ancestral roots.
He is survived by three sons, Ronald A. Barrett of Louisville, Ky., Bruce E. Barrett of Shreveport, La., and Granville B. Barrett Jr. of Smyrna; four daughters, Wanda E. Taylor of Seaford, Cynthia D. Barrett of Lewes, Paula K.B. Johnson of Smyrna and Rochelle L. Bell of Mitchellville, Md.; four brothers, Peter Grant of London, Alfonso Grant of Petersfield, Jamaica, Bruce Grant of Glasgow, Scotland and Eric Grant of Toronto; six sisters, Joyce Hines of Aberdeen, Jamaica, Joan Grant Boyd, Sylvia H.G. Young and Norma Grant, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edith Reynolds of Bridgeport, Conn., and Myrna Allen of Kingston, Jamaica; an aunt, Olga Senior of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Joseph Burton of Dover; a sister-in-law and her husband, Elaine and Colman Mosley of Dover; 12 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at noon Thursday at St. George AME Church, Park Avenue, Lewes, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Idola J. Williams will officiate.
Burial will be in People's Memorial Park, Lewes.

L. Gertrude 'Trudy' Braun, 72
SALISBURY, Md. - L. Gertrude "Trudy" Braun of Salisbury, formerly of Smyrna, Del., died Tuesday, May 22, 2001. She was 72.
Mrs. Braun was born in Detroit.
She grew up in Harrington, Del., where she graduated from Harrington High School in 1947. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1951, receiving her bachelor's degree in education. She received her master's degree in education from the University of Delaware in 1975, specializing in reading.
She taught elementary school in the Alfred I. DuPont/Brandywine School District for many years. She was the reading diagnostician for the Capital School District, Dover, Del., for many years, retiring in 1992.
Mrs. Braun's passion and gift was teaching. She has tutored hundreds of children over the years and has helped make a difference in their lives.
She was a devoted Christian with a kind, loving, gentle and generous nature. She taught Sunday school at The Cathedral Church of St. John for 10 years, and sang in the choir for many years at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Smyrna. She also served on the Vestry and the Altar Guild, and was a communion assistant. She was a member of the Century Club of Smyrna, and of Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for educators.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Edward G. Braun of Salisbury; a son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Dot Braun of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie B. and Gary Lucks of Salisbury; a brother, Robert E. Baynard, of Raleigh, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 22 N. Union St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, Pa.

Vivian G. Clark, 70
MILLSBORO - Vivian G. Clark of Millsboro, formerly of Wilmington, died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. She was 70.
Mrs. Clark was born in Sussex County, daughter of the late Andrew and Lucy Coakley Gibson.
Prior to her retirement, she was an interior designer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Clark, in 1993.
She is survived by three nieces, Linda Racine of Cochranville, Pa., Sherry Price on Ridgley Park, Pa., and Susan Szelak of Glen Mills, Pa.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Douglas Albert will officiate.
Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Del. 1, Milton.

Emma T. Eckstein, 90
HARBESON - Emma T. Eckstein of Harbeson died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro. She was 90.
Mrs. Eckstein was born in Millsboro.
She was a housekeeper for many families in the local area. She retired in 1990.
She was a an avid gardener.
Mrs. Eckstein was a member of Harbeson United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Eckstein, in 1964.
She is survived by a brother, Samuel C. Sockriter of Harbeson; six grandchildren, James Shaffer, Robert Shaffer, Ronald Betts, Bonnie Burton, Donna Owen, and Wayne Sockriter and his wife, Rhonda; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Harbeson Cemetery, Del. 5 and U.S. 9. The Rev. Jeff Hudson will officiate.

Winifred Clark Harris, 76
DOVER - Winifred Clark Harris of Dover died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 76.
Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Norfolk, Va., the youngest daughter of the late Edward and Rosa Clark.
At the early age of 3, she moved to Dover, where she was raised by her grandparents, the late Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Ravy.
Mrs. Harris graduated from Delaware State College Comprehensive High School. She received her bachelor of science degree from Delaware State University (formerly Delaware State College) and master of arts degree from New York University. She continued graduate study in English education at the University of Delaware and Temple University (ABD).
As a beginning teacher and chair of the English Department at Booker T. Washington Junior High School, she, along with several former teachers and others, became a charter member of the Alpha Pi chapter of the national sorority of Phi Delta Kappa in 1949. During the early years of Alpha Pi chapter's existence, she served as one of the basilei. She was very active in her community and helped organize the first Girl Scout troop for young African-American girls. She was also active with the sorority's youth group, called the Xinos. She became a charter member of the Dover chapter of Links Inc. and served as the chapter's first president. In 1997, she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Teaching and writing were two great passions in her life. Following tenure at Booker T. Washington Junior High School, she served as chair of the English Department at William Henry High School, Dover. She was appointed chair of the English Department at Delaware State University in 1966 and served as ETV teacher for one year. She received tenure as an assistant professor of English. She accepted the position of executive assistant to the president in 1972 and continued to teach English and linguistics classes. In addition to her duties as executive assistant, she also served as Title III administrator, director of federal relations and affirmative action officer. Although Mrs. Harris retired in 1993, she continued to teach as an adjunct professor of English until 1998.
As a lifelong member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Dover, she served faithfully, as a member of the Board of Trustees, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the History Committee, the United Methodist Women, and the Altar Guild. She taught the Hour of Reflection Bible Study Class; she also was a lay speaker, a chairperson of the Council on Ministries, a coordinator of the Summer Day Camp, and an active participant in Bible Study classes.
Mrs. Harris was the recipient of many honors and awards. Three awards which are representative are: the Woman of the Year award - presented in 1983 by the National Association of University Women; the Community Service Award - presented by the Eastern Region of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa; and the Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Education for her work with post-secondary education in 1996.
Mrs. Harris often said, "While education, teaching and writing have been my passions, my greatest passion has been my journey in Christianity. I believe God chose me to sow seeds He has given me. One never knows which will grow - perhaps most of them will."
She is survived by a sister, Grace Driggus of Dover; two cousins, Hortense Christine Williams of Philadelphia and Ann Elizabeth Williams of Arlington, Texas; five nieces, Diahann Driggus Battle of Portsmouth, Va., Alicia Dee Williams of Philadelphia, Estelita Rene Milligan of Arlington, Cynthia Louise Williams of Philadelphia and Donna Williams McGhee of Norristown, Pa.; two nephews, Cecil Lee McMillan of Arlington and Brian Harrison Williams of Philadelphia; one goddaughter, Gayle Davis of Newark; four great nieces and four great nephews; one great-great nephew; and a host of other family members and friends.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Saulsbury Road, Dover.
Service will be noon Saturday at the church, where friends may also call two hours prior to the service.

Louis W. Kushela, 83
LEWES - Louis W. Kushela died of heart failure Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 83.
Mr. Kushela was born in St. Martin's Neck, Md., son of the late Celie Mary Selby and Cuno Louis Kushela.
He worked as a commercial fisherman in Ocean City, Md., and later worked for 48 years with Mumford Sheet Metal, Selbyville.
Mr. Kushela was a member of the Selbyville Elks Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Evans Kushela, in 1970; and a brother, Cuno Kushela.
He is survived by a son, Rod Kushela and his wife, Nancy; two sisters, Alice Spencer of Salisbury, Md., and June Kelly of Berlin, Md.; two grandchildren, Keith Kushela of Mooresville, N.C., and Karen Kushela of New Castle.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services.
A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
