Wendell Lee Kreider, 66
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Wendell Lee Kreider of Chestertown, formerly of Oxford, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, in his home. He was 66.
Mr. Kreider was born May 24, 1936, in North Manchester, Ind., son of Madaline Kreider (Reiff) and the late Wilbur Kreider.
He received his education at Purdue University.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Kreider was actively involved in the Jaycees, including with the Miss Illinois and Miss America pageants, and with the Flexographic Technical Association. A talented graphic artist, he was self-employed and enjoyed his life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
He is survived by four children, Lisa Kreider of Coconut Creek, Fla., Laura Hardy of Darnestown, Brent Kreider of Bedford, Mass., and Brad Kreider of New Hope, Pa.; a sister, Carol Spann of North Manchester; and six grandchildren, Zachary, Austin, Taylor, Jacob, Shelby and Delanie.
Friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today in Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, North Manchester.
Bessie M. Northup, 83
ROXANA - Bessie M. Northup of Roxana died of heart failure Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 83.
Mrs. Northup was born in Baltimore, daughter of the late James Kauffman and Annie Schult Kauffman.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Northup was a member of Roxana United Methodist Church; the Ladies' Auxiliary of Mason-Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234 at Quillen's Point, Ocean View; and a lifetime member and past president of the Roxana Volunteer Fire Co.'s Ladies' Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Josiah A. Northup Jr., in 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Robert and Ronald Grover; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Northup and Susan Rabuck; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Thursday in Roxana United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Denise Oberle Whitesel and the Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate.
Burial will be in Roxana Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Memorial Fund of the Roxana Volunteer Fire Co.

Lucy Bolling Orrick, 84
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Bolling Orrick, as she preferred to be called, died of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in her home. She was 84.
Mrs. Orrick was born in Cumberland and raised in Washington, D.C., where she attended the Washington Cathedral School and later art school.
She was married for 25 years to Leonard Ewoldt, an officer in the U.S. Navy, and spent most of her married life in Scottsville, Va., where she ran a farm called Spring Hill. Following her divorce in 1973, she moved to Chestertown, where she gave art lessons and co-founded Gallery 5 with four other artists. The gallery provided a forum for local artists to display and sell their works, which included paintings, sculptures and crafts. Bolling Orrick also served a term as president of the Chestertown Art League.
Bolling Orrick was the longest participating volunteer with the Kent Association for Riding Therapy, Chestertown, where she formed lasting friendships with many of the handicapped children and adults who benefited from the program.
An accomplished artist in many different media, Bolling Orrick received numerous awards for her work, including the Maryland Federation of Art Juror's Choice Award for her marble sculpture, "Transmutation." She was also known for her oil paintings and watercolors and for her whimsical animal renderings, many of which adorned her back-yard sculpture garden. Her own "last best dog," as she called him, a cairn terrier named Jamie Harris, was never far from her side.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Norwood Bentley Orrick.
She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Inskeep of Fort Myers, Fla.; three sons, Eric Ewoldt of Aventura, Fla., Matthew Ewoldt of King George, Va., and David Ewoldt of Felton, Calif.; four grandchildren, Michelle, Kevin, Nathaniel and William; an adoptive stepdaughter, Robin; and many adoring nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Chester River Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Willis H. Vickers, 78
ELLENDALE - Willis H. Vickers of Ellendale died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 78.
Mr. Vickers was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Millsboro, son of the late Willis E. Vickers and Ella (Elexine) Johnson Vickers.
He is survived by three sisters, his devoted sister Mildred Vickers of Middletown, Pauline W. Emory and Ella Daniels, both of Ellendale; two brothers, Harry R. Vickers (wife Helen) of Dover and Ernest Vickers (wife Catherine) of Federalsburg, Md.; two nephews who served as caretakers, Robert Daniels and Louis Daniels, both of Ellendale; he is also survived by three close friends, Sheryl, Ella and Steve; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Services will be 7 p.m. Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, Ellendale.

Charles A. Walls, 79
SEAFORD - Charles A. Walls of Seaford died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Life Care at Lofland Park. He was 79.
Mr. Walls was born in Seaford, son of the late Charles and Nora Hill Walls.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Walls retired from Kraft Foods, Dover, in 1991.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doris Short Walls; a daughter, Shirley Jager; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Carol Walls; a sister, Geneva Stickley of Seaford; a brother, Dallas Walls of Seaford; two grandsons, Bud Jager and his friend, Tanya Paul, and Christopher Jager, all of Seaford; and a great-grandson, Ian Jager of Seaford.
Friends may call from 7-9 tonight in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, where friends may also call one hour earlier. The Rev. M. Bryan Rice will officiate.

Palmyr Eugene Brown, M.D., 72
CAMDEN - Palmyr Eugene Brown, M.D. of Camden died Friday Oct. 25, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 72.
Dr. Brown was born in Media, Pa., son of the late Paul and Florence Brown. Most of his younger years were spent in Newtown Square, Pa.
He attended Shenandoah Valley Academy, a boarding secondary school in Virginia, and graduated from there in 1948. He completed certification to become a lab and X-ray technician at the Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia, and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After graduating from Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, Mich. in 1959, he earned his medical degree at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Calif. in 1963. He practiced in West Chester, Pa., Rochester, Pa., and Miami, Fla., before moving to Delaware in 1974.
Dr. Brown worked as an emergency-room physician for 15 years at Milford Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1989.
His many interests included tending his chicken farm, woodworking and fixing things, driving his classic Corvette, and flying his airplane. He always appreciated a good laugh and sharing good jokes with his many friends, family and associates.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 21 years, Eleanor Frances Brown, in 1996.
He is survived by his daughters, Pauletta Jean Brown of Durham, N.C., Vivienne Armstrong of Apopka, Fla., and Lynette Fernando of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and five sisters.

Services and burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Resurrection Cemetery, Moon Township, Pa., near the Pittsburgh International Airport.
Bonnie Ellen Lankford Allen, 60
COKESBURY, Md. - Bonnie Ellen Lankford Allen of Cokesbury died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, in Penninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 60.
Mrs. Allen was born April 4, 1942, in Seaford, Del., daughter of Hilda Darby Lankford of Galestown and the late John Henry Lankford.
She was a graduate of North Dorchester High School, class of 1960 and later took childcare courses.
She was a teachers aide in Dorchester County Schools for many years and then worked at Building Blocks Child Care Center in Delmar.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and also directed the annual Christmas programs for many years. She also volunteered at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and Caroline Nursing Home. A cancer survivor herself, she also actively sold daffodils for the American Cancer Society for many years.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Oliver Allen, on Sept. 12, 1972.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Lisa Allen Malkus of Cambridge; three sons, John W. Allen, Ronald W. Allen and Daniel O. Allen Jr., all of Seaford; five grandchildren, Matthew Malkus, Olivia Malkus, Nathan Allen, Dustin Allen and Miklyla Allen; three step-grandchildren, Jordan Haman, Rickey Willey and Tara Willey; five sisters, Sandra Eskridge of Galestown, Jackie Shockley of Dagsboro, Del., Karen Potter of Seaford, Vickie Lankford of Galestown and Terri Lankford of Millsboro, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight in Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, in Federalsburg.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. John Nalley will officiate.

Jeanette M. 'Sweetie' Peters, 83
MILLSBORO - Jeanette M. "Sweetie" Peters, of Long Neck, died of natural causes Thursday, May 22, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 83.
Mrs. Peters was born in Harrington, daughter of the late Thomas and Mattie Tibbit Markland.
She was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church, Millsboro, and Trinity Welseyan Church, Dover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Peters, in 1990; a daughter, Geraldine Melvin; a brother, Abner Markland; and a sister, Polly Hobbs.
She is survived by two granddaughters, Kellie Wilson of Dover and Sheri Caldwell of Seaford; two sisters, Doris Gillard of Dover and Marguerite Bailey of Camden; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Alysia and Alayna; her good friend and companion, Henry L. Phillips; a sister-in-law, Betty Markland of Millsboro; and a brother-in-law, Wendell Hobbs of Boothwyn, Pa.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
J. Marshall Phillips, 87
LAUREL - J. Marshall Phillips, of Laurel, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 87.
Mr. Phillips was born in Laurel, son of the late Columbus W. and Eliza Adams Phillips.
He was a member of the Laurel High School Class of 1934. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1938.
After college, he spent a few years as the administrator for the National Youth Administration for Sussex County, helping find employment for young people.
In 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and proudly served his country during World War II. He was enlisted as an infantry drill instructor and stationed in Camp Croft, S.C. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces as a navigation cadet and served in Germany. He was discharged in 1945.
Upon leaving military service, he started J. Marshall Phillips Trucking Co., from which he retired in the early 1990s.
Mr. Phillips was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Laurel and played an instrumental part in planning and building the facility that currently is in Laurel. He was an active and involved member of Portsville United Methodist Church and was very supportive of the Laurel Little League.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha E. Hudson; and two sisters, May P. Williams and Hazel P. Glover.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Phillips and Jeffrey Phillips, both of Laurel; a brother and sister-in-law, Woodrow W. and Mary Belle Phillips of Laurel; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean P. Edwards and David F. Edwards Jr. of Laurel; a granddaughter, Sara Phillips of Laurel; and several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Portsville United Methodist Church in Portsville, near Bethel. The Rev. Richard Walton, pastor, will officiate.

Joseph H. Smith, 69
MILLSBORO - Joseph H. Smith, of Millsboro, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 69.
Mr. Smith was born in Millsboro, son of the late Irvin and Alice Brasure Smith.
He was a lifelong farmer, poultryman and owner-operator of the family farm, Country Living Farms. He and his family also operated the Country Living Mobile Court since 1968, and Country Living Produce, Millsboro.
Mr. Smith was a member of Gideons International, the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Georgetown and the Epworth Fellowship Church, Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ellen Maude Hitchens Smith; three sons and two daughters-in-law, J. Randall Smith, Donald J. and Jill Smith and Kevin B. and Terri Smith, all of Millsboro; and four grandchildren, David Smith, Stephen Smith, Hayden Smith and Krista Ka Smith.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call three hours earlier. The Rev. Dr. Brooks Reynolds will officiate.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.
Ethel Layton Hitch, 78
SALISBURY, Md. - Ethel Layton Hitch, of Salisbury, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. She was 78.
Mrs. Hitch was born in Seaford, Del., daughter of the late Lewis and Bessie Jefferson Passwaters.
She retired from Nationwide District office in Salisbury. Mrs. Hitch was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Fruitland. She was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Salisbury and Fort Myers, Fla., and the Fort Myers Congregational Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers.
She is survived by her husband, R. Russell Hitch, of Salisbury; a daughter and her husband, Gail L. and John T. Yeager, of Salisbury; a grandson and his wife, David L. and Ruth Ann Short, of Salisbury; and a brother, Lewis Passwaters, of Atlantic City, N.J.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Ike Ledger and Rev. T. Harvey Dixon will officiate.
Burial will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Walter T. Lofland Jr., 44
WILMINGTON - Walter T. Lofland Jr., of Wilmington, succumbed to a fire in his home Tuesday, May 22, 2001.He was 44.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna May Lofland, in 1992, and his father, Walter T. Lofland Sr., who also succumbed to the fire.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and John Picklo, of Elsmere; and a niece and nephew, Michael and Michelle Picklo.
Service will be 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, where friends may call after 11 a.m.
Burial will be in the adjoining memorial park.

Walter T. Lofland Sr., 75
WILMINGTON - Walter T. Lofland Sr., of Wilmington, succumbed to a fire in his home Tuesday, May 22, 2001. He was 75.
Mr. Lofland was born in Clayton.
He served in the Army during the Korean crisis.
He was a gardener at Longwood Gardens for 37 years, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Lofland was a member of Eden Lodge and the New Castle Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna May in 1992; his son, Walter T. Lofland Jr., also succumbed to the fire.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and John Picklo, of Elsmere; two sisters, Margaret and Betty; and two grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Picklo.

Shannon Rose Matthews, 15
EAST MACHIAS, Maine - Shannon Rose Matthews, of East Machias, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in her home after a four-year battle with cancer. She was 15.
She was preceded in death by a great-aunt, Laurette Bouffard. Mrs. Bouffard raised money locally to help with medical expenses through the Shannon Rose Matthews Fund.
She is survived by her parents, Chuck and Vicki Matthews; two brothers, John and Brent; and her grandparents, John and Joanne Matthews, of Lewes.
Service was at the Machias Valley Baptist Church in East Machias.
The family suggest contributions to the Ronald McDonald House, 654 State St., Bangor, Maine 04401-5649. Mrs. Matthews said the Ronald McDonald Houses in both Bangor and Boston were very helpful to the family since they lived in a rural area and had to spend much time at city hospitals.

John E. ‘Mike' Miller, 57
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - John E. Mike Miller, of Chestertown, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Veterans Administration Maryland Health Care System, Perry Point, Md. He was 57.
Mr. Miller was born Feb. 8, 1944, in Caroline County, son of Helen Girad.
He received his education from the Queen Anne's County public schools.
Mr. Miller was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He was employed at the LeMay's Welding Co. in Queenstown, Maryland Fabricator Inc., of Millington, and Bramble Construction Co. in Chestertown. He was a hard worker and devoted person.
Mr. Miller enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and car racing. He touched the hearts and lives of many while here on this Earth.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Rosemary Miller; a daughter, Alnida Miller; a stepson, Adrain Waters; his stepfather, Roy Girad; two sisters, Ruth Miller and Rosalee. Butler; three brothers, Clayton S. Miller, James E. Miller and Roy Girad Jr.; five sisters-in-law, Geneva Miller, Lois Miller, Martha Miller, Christine Girad and Rebecca Turner; two brothers-in-law, Joseph E. Butler and John Floyd; an uncle, Percy Miller; an aunt, Daisy Miller; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Janes United Methodist Church, Cross and Cannon streets, Chestertown.
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville. The Rev. Gonzalee Matthews will officiate.

Lee Shelton, 83
GEORGETOWN - Lee Shelton, of Georgetown, died of cancer Friday, May 25, 2001, in the Stockley Center in Georgetown. He was 83.
Mr. Shelton was born in Wilmington, son of the late Ransford Shelton and Mae Tucker.
He was a gardener at the Stockley Center Greenhouse.
He attended the Stockley Center Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Grace McAlevy, Marcia Pietras and Ruth Concio, and a brother, Ransford C. Shelton.
He is survived by a sister, Marlene Baer, of Harrington, and a brother, Robert Shelton, of Florida.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Stockley Center Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery.
